I was skeptical that this type of method or that anything having to do with hypnosis would help me in any way throughout my pregnancy - but now I have used it TWICE! After a friends recommendation, I ordered O'Neill's bundle and my husband and I both read it and it provided a wonderful way of approaching childbirth that I had never thought of before, and I am so glad that I did. I felt truly in sync with my body and baby...and my husband. Every woman should know about this. My friend sent me this link to a recent article on O'Neill:

I used this method ,after trying without it and feeling sad and frustrated. I was renewed after reading book and listening to CD . I highly reccomend this method as it deals with issues no one else addresses and the hypnosis worked like a charm . I then went on to use The Hypnobirthing Bundle For Happy Hypnomoms and Blissful Hypnobabies and my dream was complete ,a healthy baby girl naturally.I think all fertility offices should suggest this so all fertility hopefuls can double their IVF success rate as the Israeli research states. Good Luck. This made the road alot easier, faster and sucessful.

Simplistic view of infertility

After 5 years of infertility - most of which included all kinds of alternative medicine - I was looking for some new guided meditations. This book does have a cd, but only one guided meditation. I like the meditation, but there is irritating music at the beginning and end so it is hard to stay in the meditation if you want to extend it.

More frustrating, however, is the idea that anyone can overcome infertility if she thinks the right thoughts and that the people who go to IVF or other assisted procedures are taking the easy way out. I think there are couples who think, "I could quit smoking and see if that helps, but IVF is easier." but so many more of us try anything and everything we can with or without assisted reproductive technologies. I have changed my diet, exercised the "right" amount, examined my thought process . . . all the things the book suggests. We perhaps even wasted valuable time by pursuing these methods as I went from age 34 to age 38 before moving to IVF thereby decreasing our chances of success from about 50% chance / cycle to about 30% chance / cycle.

Furthermore, the examples in her book are of young couples with unexplained infertility. A quote from page 25 says it all, "In most cases of unexplained infertility, it can take as long as seven months to conceive." Wow! A whole seven months! The poor dears! So her book must be helpful to people who may not even progress to get a diagnosis of infertility since most standards put that at 1 year of unprotected sex without conceiving.

The only reason this book got 2 stars is that there is at least one idea for meditation that I liked (in the book, not on the cd) and I do believe that how we think and feel about ourselves as well as how well we treat our bodies can have an influence. It is just not the whole story.

For better guided imagery I suggest "Help for Infertility"

Impotence is mainly a inability of maintaining an erection for sexual intercourse. Psychological impotence can be easily cured with counseling but some of the types of impotence are irreversible. Physical impotence mostly occurs from cardiovascular illness or diabetes. If a man has an erection at night the impotence is surely psychological related but if he has none than it might be physiological however you might find interesting the book "Natural Penis Enlargement: New Methods of Avoiding and Curing Impotence, Premature Ejaculation, and Erectile Dysfunction Safely and Inexpensively. New ... No Pumps, No Pills and No Gadgets! Vol. 2" by Platinum Millennium as it treats the same subject.

This book was a real eye-opener. I have had erectile dysfunction for quite some time since a machining accident, and I have tried every book/technique for overcoming my insecurities on the market. I tried viagra, seeing many urologists, and even hypnotism and still could not get it up! Imagine the effect this terrible disease has on your self esteem and how difficult it is to get into a serious relationship. Needless to say the 10 years before I read this book were a dark time for me. I wont give too much away because if you are like me you will love reading this book from cover to cover, but several important topics are covered including daily excercises to improve public muscle strength and overcoming our anxieties about sex and masturbation. The author's style was uplifting...I was truly put at ease by his comforting tone.

I read this book about 12 years ago when I was going through infertility. I was very distraught and reading what these two women were going through help me to not feel so alone. I've since adopted a beautiful daughter and had a surprise biological daughter 7 years later. I went through almost everything these two women went through emotionally and physically. I have always remembered this book fondly.

I am so sorry to see this excellent book is out of print. I loaned my copy to a woman I'm counseling and she said it was the best book she's ever read on surviving infertility. Well worth searching out, and I'll contact the authors to urge their publisher to bring it back! Carol Frost Vercollone, infertility counselor & author of Helping the Stork.

I am a birthmother. This collection of letters has opened my eyes to the pain of infertility. This book has made it possible for me to understand that the pain infertile women have is exactly opposite from the pain I have, which coincidently, makes us very similar. I only wish I could write to the two women who wrote it.

This is a heartwarming and beautifully presented story for any child, but absolutely heavensent for any family with young children whose lives have been touched by a surrogate pregnancy. The gently told story explains the way surrogacy unfolds in the soothing tale of a young kangaroo whose mother helps a couple realize their dream of having a child. Charmingly illustrated and beautifully written, it's a book that all children will enjoy and which will help them understand that families are made in many ways. For the children of surrogates and the families they work with, it is an invaluable resource to explain in broad strokes the process and open a discussion about what to expect.

My children 4 and 6 really like this book. I purchased it because we're going to be a surrogate for a great couple and I wanted something written for their age about surrogacy.

My only negative is that it's a bit heterosexist . . . we are helping to male kangaroos and the story is about a husband and wife kangaroo . . . perhaps I should write something :)

Great book for small children!

I gave this gift to a family that is dealing with surrogacy and couldn't find the words to explain it to there other children. It is a great book for the under 6 crowd, but over that, it did not have enough details. It is a definate buy!

If you want to understand infertility's toll
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-03
"Jack" as she's called by her husband, is a one woman dynamo exposing her soul in the most private and gut-wrenching of times. Through her writing we see the world from the eyes of the bereaved - even though it was just a "fetus" that was lost - as one of her relatives callously put it. Grieving is grieving and Mitchard exposes the follies of both those who suffer, those who live with them and the industry built up around such people, as well as the heart-ache that is liberally spread around. Heart-ache that may be felt, but not necessarily talked about.

A real eye-opener.

This book kept me riveted from the first page to the last. Jacquelyn Mitchard's true story of infertility and adoption are so personal, that at times I felt guilty reading parts of it. She bares her soul and it makes for a fascinating read. Even if you've never had a problem getting pregnant, she writes about so many other facets of her life, marital trouble, step-daughter, relationships with her father and brother etc. I felt like I was reading someone's private journal. A very interesting journal. It was fascinating reading how Ms Mitchard reacted to events she couldn't control. Since this book was published very early in her career, I wondered if she regretted her candor, years after it was published.

Review Date: 2006-12-27
I got this book after reading the excerpts from a online book club since it is a topic I am interested in. Overall the book was very difficult to get through. It is really about medical ethics than it really is about the history of assisted reproduction. The "cast of characters" was very confusing to follow. To learn more about the couple you meet in the beginning takes chapters. I am not a science person but enjoy reading factual accounts. This book is more of an education lesson than entertainment.

The story of a technology under fire

Review Date: 2004-04-05
In Pandora's Baby, Robin Henig tells of a confrontation which came to a head in 1973, where a hospital administrator in New York learned of a rogue experiment in progress which might have created the first human fetus through in vitro fertilization. His decision fostered a new era in reproduction technology and issues which continues to this day, and Henig's survey of IVF procedures and history provides the story of a technology under fire.

A delightful guide through a bioethical thicket
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-14
Adjectives like "judicious" and "level headed" (see the Publisher's Weekly review) don't do justice to this lively and probing and timely book. Henig has the gift of conveying complex scientific information painlessly and the stories she tells are riveting, full of hubris, lawsuits, medical cowboys, desperate would-be parents, nutty fundamentalists (in one protest at an in-vitro clinic, they carried a sign that read "Incest in a Test Tube") and, of course, politics. If you've been following the debate over stem cell research, cloning or the work of the President's commission on bioethics ( its chairman,Leon Kass, appears in this book as an early opponent of IVF ) Pandora's Baby is invaluable. And if you haven't been following, this is a great place to start.

Resolving Infertility is a great book to explain all the medical procedures, the tests (both what tests would be ran and what the results mean) the different types of infertility diagnosis and a great overall reference book. It does discuss the emotional aspects of infertility as well but not as in depth as other books. If you are look for a general reference book of what to expect medically, this is the book for you. And the best part it is written in simple language, no complex medical terms. I find myself frequently referring back to it for reference.

This book is the best! I have read and reread it so many times I almost know it by heart. I have lent this book to so many people that I need a new copy! As a woman who has gone through the infertility nightmare and has gained hope by conceiving (and is looking to go through it again). I recommend this book to every woman who faces infertility and is looking for answers. This book gives the insights into the numerous tests that you will face as well as honest personal accounts about how they are (like how a HSG really feels - Ouch!)Thank you to the authors for this guide through the maze of infertility!

Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-06
The book offers a comprehensive overview of issues related to infertility, including medical, psychological, and financial. One shortcoming is that the discussion of age and fertility is too brief. A major strength is the medical discussion, which very clearly explains not only the basics, but also the many tests which may be part of an infertility evaluation. The personal stories and comments are also insightful.

A good book but with gaps in structure, i found out that "Volume II - Natural Penis Enlargement: New methods of avoiding and curing impotence, premature ejaculation, and erectile dysfunction safely and inexpensively. ...
