Nice approach to TCM basics for westerners, a softer sell than Fertility Cure, but not as "scientific." Still, with an authentic "Asian matriarch" voice (smile). Provides actual recipes and meal suggestions, a big plus when trying to change your diet.

After struggling with secondary infertility for 1 year, I had given up on conventional medicine and turned to TCM. I read this book (as well as some others) and immediately made an appointment with a local accupuncturist. After 3 months of accupuncture, modifying my diet and taking chinese herbs, I was pregnant. Baby #2 was born healthy just 6 weeks ago and he will always by my "accu baby". Buy the book - trust your body and give Traditional Chinese Medicine a chance to work for you!

I have gone thru 3 failed IVF and 8 inseminations and speant over 60K. Heartache beyond compare! polluted my body with Chemicals! Had a miscarriage. Went into labor. Had a C-section. and the clincher no baby to show for all the abuse I put my body thru...Shall I go on. All for the sake of western medicine and if I had read this book 1st.Please give this a try you will be armed with invaluable information. Like any business go with someone who is highly recomended call your local accupuncture school, find someone who specializes in infertility. Educate yourself with what truly is going on with your body before you spend your heart& soul. there was no reason for me to not get pregnant, all my results were great FSH 5.5 cycle 27-28 days 14 day luteal phase great lining great hormone levels...at 40 pretty proud of my body, but after I used two different donors and didn't get pregnant with an 80-90% success rate. I new there was something else wrong and that wrong was found in eastern medicine...now we are working to resolve the issue and hopefully....I PRAY

I am not a big reader of novels, but this book by William Schuh was a fastinating look at the intricacies of relationships in the healthcare field and within dysfuntional families, but did so in a way that was not tawdry or demeaning. There are more than a few interesting turns that may take you by surprise.

I would definitely recommend this book.

Occasionally I will take a chance and pick a book outside my usual genres. This book impressed me with its entertaining story and the quality of the writing.

We meet five characters early in this book. Dr. Michael Hamilton and Dr. Lori Hamilton have been married for some time. Michael is compassionate both professionally and personally, and prides himself on his interpersonal skills with patients. Dr. Greg Jameson and Linda Jameson have known the Hamilton's back to the days when they all attended college together. At one point Linda and Lori were roommates and Greg and Michael were roommates. We also meet Will Jameson, the wonderful son of Greg and Linda.

Dr. William K. Schuh devotes much of the early portion of the book to develop his characters. We learn that Michael and Lori are quite passionate in their marriage. We learn that Greg is a self-centered, insensitive jerk who spends much of his time hiding from his family. We also learn that Linda is a full-fledged alcoholic. Will takes it all in stride, caring for his younger brother while his mother is in a drunken stupor, or suffering from a hangover.

As Schuh develops his characters he places little tidbits into the story, slowly shifting from character development to the heart of his story. In order to create the conflict necessary to bring these people together, Schuh uses two events. Dr. Michael Hamilton is one of the most respected oncologists in the nation, and Will Jameson develops leukemia. Dr. Greg Jameson makes yet another in a series of inappropriate comments regarding a nurse. The comment turns into a sexual harassment suit against the hospital in which the Hamilton's and the Jameson's work. These two events will force four former friends to face traumatic events from the past, events that have been secret for many years and that everyone initially wishes had remained hidden. These secrets have the potential to destroy lives, reputations and marriages. Unfortunately, there are those who would take advantage of the revealed information for their own personal gain.

The quality of the writing in this book was what initially impressed me. I frequently marveled at how adroitly Dr. Schuh choreographed conversations, and the accuracy of his spelling and grammar. The writing is clear and natural. Dr. Schuh kept track of the loose ends in his novel, and pulled all the elements carefully together in the final pages.

This book is Dr. Schuh's first. He is in the process of writing others. I look forward to reading Dr. Schuh's next book as I am sure he will write it at least as well as this book. I recommend that you pick this book up for an enjoyable read. Finding a very good first book from a new author is like gathering an unexpected pearl. Enjoy!

In November 07', at age thirty, I was diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure. My husband and I were told the only way we could have a biological child was through IVF. Since November I have been reading infertility books, looking for emotional support. In the tradition books all I was able to find was factual and scientific information, which stated what was wrong with me, but never really reached the heart of the matter. When I read Jill's book, I finally felt like someone understood me. While the book is a fictional account of her experience, her emotions must have been completely nonfiction! I have had so many "me too" moments while reading this book. It has been the first book that has made me realize I am not completely crazy. Knowning the others have had frustrating experiences with doctors, and adoption agencies and medications(as well as unsolicited information!!) has been both comforting and helpful. I would recommend this book to any woman suffering from infertility. I would also recommend this book to anyone who has a friend or family member suffering, it is an eye-opening glimpse into the ups and downs of infertility.

A friend gave me this book, knowing I would enjoy it. I just finished it tonight, and really did like it! Jill Sayre writes from the heart and from her own personal experiences, yet fictionalizes the world in her novel so I, as the reader, wondered what really happened to the author.

The Waiting Womb is a triumphant story of how a heart can heal and that it does not just take a womb to make a family. It takes love, selflessness, and strength. The characters in the novel were so very real - it reads like a memoir, one that I couldn't put down!

I look forward to reading more of Jill Sayre's work!

I could not put this book down. It is very well written with a bit of humor and easy to read. It shows what a woman goes through during infertility treatments and how her life is affected by the decisions she makes. It also touches on international adoption. My husband and I experienced infertility and are now beginning the adoption process. It was very comforting to read this book and know that we are not the only couple affected by infertility. I highly recommend reading this book before you start any infertility treatments as it gives you a glance at what it entails. It also helps you understand others who have gone through this difficult process. I can't wait to read Jill's next book.

My husband and I have been struggling with infertility for six years and have read several books on the subject. Choosing Assisted Reproduction is the most comprehensive, informative and challenging book that we have come across. We were both relieved to see that the authors raise some of the ethical questions that we are struggling with. They do so in a very sensitive way, always respecting the difficult choices that infertility patients face in this new world of baby making. I recommend this book to anyone going through infertility, as well as to their families and friends.

This compassionately written book has provided a constant reference and framework within which to think during the hugely emotional period of infertility. It has managed to normalise to some extent the weird world in which readers of this book dwell. It has contributed largely to my change of views on the right of the child to know its biological history. I would recommend it as essential reading for anyone going into third party parenting.

I can't believe that anyone let me start the process of infertility treatment (beyond the clomid stage) without telling me to read this. I found it on my own when having to decide whether my only chance to have a child, egg donation, was right for my husband and myself. I only WISH someone had told me about it sooner. It would have helped me think about all of "this" in a not so crazy way. It's technical, but, those of us who go through infertility procedures know more about the getting pregnant process than most books and online souces give us credit for. These authors treat us like intelligent human beings.

This volume is remarkable for its lucid non-technical (non-medical) language and the way it speaks to the body, mind, and spirit. The book is about people who struggle as under dogs against the odds to have babies through a third party contributor. Thoroughly accessible, it will appeal to general readers, offering many pearls of wisdom. While en route to China to adopt an infant daughter (after having a stillborn biological daughter), I read this book. I am painfully aware that medical science/arts have their limits and are not always successful (even for those who are indomitable.) Having been schooled in the Boston area with clinical work in several exotic locales, the author Lonny is now in a Hawaiian paradise where she lives a wholesome lifestyle. The narrative is honed from the lens of a physician with emphasis on ethics, politics and complications of third party ART's. Dr. Higgins has many unique discussions like that of the "Solomon Syndrome," a reference to the biblical story, coining a new phrase for what some women, including herself, experience as unworthiness, questioning if they are the real mother when an egg donor is involved. One wonders if there are similar syndromes for fathers using donor(s), non-carrier(s) partners or parents who employ a surrogate-gestational carrier.
The vignettes of case studies or clinical scenarios describe the psychological risks and high stakes of 3rd party reproductive matters (on the one hand, issues of loss of genetic contribution from one parent; and on the other hand, how worthwhile it is to have these children made against the odds). Higgins tells stories from her own family, e.g., referencing her romance with her husband and miracle son Tucker. She also addresses well what parental responses might be when a child says to their parent: "You should have shopped for better egg or sperm!" In a reader-friendly chart of drawings "The Birth Matrix: An Illustrated Guide to All the Options" Higgins gives representations of possible reproductive combinations available for singles, gay, lesbian families and traditional heterosexual couples. This is helpful because often people may need to try more than one standard way to make a baby when spontaneous pregnancy is not working or possible due to numerous factors/unknown causes.
The author could have dealt more with the hardest cases when enough is enough, and the journey results in childfree living (not included fully), adoption (one case relates to China adoption), or surrogacy (included more fully). Higgins addresses society's lack of willingness to deal with 3rd parties in terms of nuanced language. Anyone considering third party reproduction will benefit from mining this book. The journey to parenthood from infertility has numerous rewards and pitfalls (joys and sorrows). Higgins has discussion of God talk and mentions a spiritually up-lifting hymn (referring to a creation hymn "Out of the Stars.") Offering an empathetic embrace like a hug, this book soothes in that it eases pain and calms one down to make one more centered and less angry, anxious or upset. With a bit of luck this book will receive wider circulation among mothers and fathers to-be, professionals, indeed all interested parties. It makes a thoughtful resource and can be a healing balm. Available in both hard and soft cover, this book wholeheartedly offers plenty of doses of loving-kindness based upon the doctor's orders!

Dr Higgins provides a refreshingly lucid and personal narrative that bridges the all-too-common gulf between patient and physician. The wealth of facts and reference material helps propsective and "in-process" families understand the clinical journey and the many actors in the process. The first-hand experience and shared stories of her patients and acquaintances breathe life and soul into the book, and reach the heart of any careful reader.

This volume should grace the offices of every fertility and ART provider.

This is an outstanding book describing the procedure and emotional aspect of being an "egg" (oocyte) recipient. I found this book very helpful. Infertility is a lonely dis-ease to have. Reading the stories helps you feel less alone in your struggle. It is also very positive and encouraging about whatever outcome you choose/is chosen for you. And it's one of the few books that can be read by a couple that has tried everything but (for whatever reasons) decides/is forced to go child-free. Many other books end with the authors having a healthy baby, which can make you feel really left out if you and your partner are part of the percentage of people who don't.

Understanding is a major first step!

It's hard to "enjoy" a book on infertility. But it's obvious the Davises understand all the aspects and have interviewed many people in writing this book - they seem to be able to explain all the different issues involved in this anguishing experience.

Reading this book won't resolve your infertility, but it certainly will go a long way to help you cope with and understand this harrowing journey. Definitely recommended!

It is apparent that the Davis' have resolved unselfishly to help others who are struggling with infertility and hope that this book will answer some of the questions, as well as serve as a good resource for these couples. I cannot imagine the pain, sorrow and anguish couples must face when they learn that conceiving and carrying a biological child is deemed impossible for them and not in their future. After reading this book, I can truly say I have a greater respect and sensitivity for childless couples everywhere.

This was an amazing read. As someone who battled infertility, this book brought the human touch from the doctor's perspective. Many times as the infertility patient you feel like a pin cushion as your doctors stand back and seem to try this and that test never feeling like there is a human touch. Dr. Schapiro's novel brings a great deal of warmth to the process and gives hope to women battling infertility as she shows both sides of the process. Even if you have not been through the process of infertility testing and treatment you will laugh and cry and you follow our heroine through her struggles and triumphs as a facinating woman trying to have it all.

I picked this book up and vowed I would skim through it on vacation. I could not put it down the whole flight to the vacation (it was a 11 hour flight:)) This is an amazing read. I skipped the stories of other women's struggles because I was just trying to conceive and didn't want to worry myself into thinking MORE about other fertility problems that could arise in addition to the ones I already had.

The book lead me to a total lifestyle change:
I have eliminated bad stresses in my life.
I have my husband and I on a very Dr. Dao diet.
In addition I have become his patient (lucky for me I live in the Los Angeles area).

I recently received blood tests results that show my hormones are at a normal level for the first time in my life since 1993 without the aid of western medication!!!!

I really attribute this change to Dr. Dao and HIGHLY recommend this book to my friends and all!

This book is not just about fertility, but about how all of us, especially
those of us trying to get pregnant, can live a healthy life and about how our bodies work. In so many books of this type, I have either been bored or confused by what I've read. Dr. Dao and Ms. Herko not only explain things in simple layman's terms, but the writing itself is interesting, fast-paced and sometimes even funny. Ms. Herko uses metaphors that are right on target in helping to explain what would otherwise be complicated concepts. I actually put down a novel I was reading in order to finish this book!

What pulled me in the most of course, was the testimonials by women(women's voices) and individual stories or journeys of Dr. Dao's patients.
The connection to our lives, the human and emotional side of us, is what
makes this book so compelling, and has motivated me to look into many of the doctor's healthful suggestions. The authors have shown me that it all really is quite simple and sensible.

I highly recommend this book to everyone: buy it, read it and keep it as a reference.

Good advice for healthy living overall. An inspirational read to help you focus on what's really important and maintain a healthy lifestyle (spiritually, emotionally as well as physically).

In particular, I found qigong exercises very helpful. The advice on what to eat/not to eat was also helpful. Although some recipes seemed like too much work, it is probably a small price to pay to ensure that you are healthy and fertile naturally.

valuable read even if your goal isn't fertility

I picked this book up for a friend, but after skimming through it, realized that I wanted to keep it for myself, a 55 year old cancer survivor. The writing is very engaging - I kept wanting to learn more! Many of the health principles are applicable for anyone. Who doesn't want her body to be in balance and healthier? This book just makes so much sense. It is written so clearly and is so fascinating that I'd recommend it to women of any age.

This book was an excellent overview on fertility and conception. The layout and pictures made it a pleasure to read. This book was great at covering what the body goes through every month, how to time conception, general health for both man and women, and if there is difficulty getting pregnant, what the options are. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting pregnant and concerned about their own fertility.

This book is an excellent resource and guide to helping couples conceive. When I tried to get pregnant in my late 30's, I followed the many useful guidelines in this book on maintaining a proper diet, to a liver detox . Finally with the help of IVF and acupuncture, I had success. The book is well organized and full of photographs and helpful suggestions for several options. From trying the natural way, to the help of alternative medicine, to the help of science, this book guides you through each process, discusses both male and female roles and offers a clear view in simple terms to understand. I would highly recommend it. Each time I utilized the advice in this book, I was able to have a successful outcome and now I have three healthy children. I only wish I found this book sooner.

Easy to read and understand.
