A Sexual OdysseaReview Date: 2008-04-30
This novel examines the relationship between doctor and patient. The illiness is sexual dysfunction.
In the mid-1950's, Doctor Richard Masters met Virginia Johnson and formed the now famous "Masters & Johnson, Institute For The Study Of Human Sexual Behavior". Their stated goal was the study of the 'Human Sexual Response'.
To accomplish their purpose, Doctor Masters installed one-way glass inside the Institute behind which he and Virginia were able to watch volunteer couples engaging in sexual activity. When news of this new `therapy' leaked out, the medical community greeted it with shock, dismay and disapproval and the two researchers became virtual outcasts in society; yet, they didn't let public opinion deter them.
Sometime after the introduction of this practice - and some say because of it - Doctor Masters divorced his wife of many years and married his co-researcher (and co-voyeur), Virginia Johnson. This news too was greeted with derision and disapproval but it was their collaboration that helped launch the field of sex therapy.
"The Caregiver" - explores the dichotomy present in sex therapy. Doctor Phillip D'Anese, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist specializes in the treatment of sexually dysfunctional woman. In his practice, he is expected to share the deepest sexual experiences and fantasies of these vulnerable women while maintaining a professional detachment from them.
This is the story of one man's failure to maintain that delicate balance.

A Helpful Resource for those Who Struggle!!!Review Date: 2003-07-29
We identified with her because she had been there, yet, any outsider, whether they be family, friends, business associates, pastor, priest, needs to read this book, too. For the most part, it is a guide to spiritual and emotional health for those who do not have children and who may feel disappointed with themselves, with their mates, or even with God.
Some of the chapter titles include:
-When the Quiver is Empty
-Frustration with Infertility
-Coping with Hoping
-Good Grief
-The Single Non-Parent
-Partnership in Process
-Couples in Crisis
-Affirming Families
-Happy Mother's Day!
-The Church and the Childless
There are more chapters, to be sure, with the last chapters devoted to the "Possibilities" which can be sought in this journey. There is also a great bibliography and a list of organizations and publications for more help. This is a great resource, and read with care and love, and hopefully some who cares and loves for you.

Potent information for the impotentReview Date: 2003-07-19
Doctor's think it has something to do with my experimentations with hallucinogenic drugs when I was in college, but I think it's related to my strong preference for wearing tighty-whiteys. Regardless of the exact cause, my wife and I have saved a fortune by not having to buy contraception. The downside is that I'm unable to conceive a child.
We looked into adoption, but my wife's sketchy past pretty much eliminated any chance of that happening. Our neighbors offered to give us their next child, but we were afraid they'd want to come over every day and see him/her.
Then my boss recommended, "Family Building Through Egg and Sperm Donation". He was also having difficulties producing fertile sperm, so he suggested that I read the book (and not just look at the pictures).
My wife and I have always been open to new ways of making babies, so the concept of egg and sperm donation was exciting to us. I admit that this was the first time we'd heard of egg and sperm donation - and we were originally scared off by the concept - but once we understood the legal, medical and ethical ramifications, we were ready to pick a donor.
Contrary to what people might say, there is no shame in being infertile. I was teased incessantly at work for having ineffective sperm, but you can imagine the look on my coworkers' faces, when 10 months later, "Mr. Sterile" (me) showed off his healthy baby girl.
While not for everyone, I recommend, "Family Building Through Egg and Sperm Donation" to any couple having trouble fertilizing.
