This volume is the latest in a series devoted to the strategies required by intensive care specialists to combat the evolving
challenge of microbial infections. The Editors' objectives are to provide an update of therapeutic implications and discussion
of controversial topics in specific infections involving critically ill patients. Two authors representing management perspectives
in Europe and North America discuss each topic. This volume focuses on life-threatening infections caused by Pseudomonas
aeruginosa, arguably one of the most adaptable opportunistic pathogens. Twenty-five expert contributors discuss a spectrum
of serious P. aeruginosa infections in intensive care units and chronic infections in individuals with cystic fibrosis. The
focused nature of the topic might limit the volume's appeal to a wide readership. There is no doubt, however, that the 13
well written contributions reflect the importance and evolving challenge of P. aeruginosa infections, and provide clinicians,
scientists - and inquisitive, young microbiologists - with a highly informative and state-of-the-art resource. John Govan,

Authoritative, exhaustive but concise, and easily the most readable text covering everything in pediatric infectious diseases.
Probably one of the most valuable references I had during residency and definitely one of the most important books for me
now in fellowship.

I ordered the book hoping to find some good recipes to use with my candida diet, which has been working really well. I tend
not to cook on this diet since most recipes contain some ingredients that are not allowed. The reviews were favorable so
I ordered the book. The recipes though are not appealing to me and seem to be really out of date. They don't reflect the almost
20 years since that have been such a renaissance for the culinady field. It Doesn't make use of any of the new, varied, ethnic
ingredients that are available now. The look if the book is also not appealing. It looks like 1989 (or earlier) in the
oldfashioned typsest and hideous cover, althought I know it should not be judged by that alone. Food publishing has come
so far though, that it is hard to get excited by this book. If anyone knows another book that is more current, I would love
to know!

This book has been a real help to me in my anti yeast adventure. I have been taking lamisil and following the diet for 3
weeks with great success. It is a roller coaster ride, but more ups than downs. The food is not the most tasty at times,
but with so little choice it is hard. A favorite is the Oat and Orange Muffins (which I vary with different flavorings Raspberry
is delicious!) -- they are simple to make, moist and freeze well. Also real good are the Rice Ball Cookies. This book is a
must for those with this particular need. (ALSO - to a previous reviewer: I BELIEVE STEVIA IS VEGETABLE GLYCERIN AND WATER.)

I wish I had known about using 100% pure vegetable glycerine as a sweetener months ago! Her recipes make you feel like you
are eating "real" food again.

The books makes no mention that condoms could not possibly afford protection against any virus nor even mentions the real
and serious dangers associated with latex condom use. Hardy a word about the 57 FDA listed toxic proteins, the twenty plus
FDA toxins nor the carcinogens and teratogens (cause birth defects).
The real facts as outlined by the Editor of Rubber Technology are simply ignored.
_______
Editor of Rubber Chemistry and Technology, Dr. C. Michael Roland of the
U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington D.C., spoke about his
research on "intrinsic flaws" in latex rubber condoms and surgical gloves
(published in Rubber World, June, 1993).
Roland said that what I am about to relate is "common knowledge among good
scientists who have no political agenda."
Electron microscopy reveals the HIV virus to be about O.1 microns in size
(a micron is a millionth of a metre). It is 60 times smaller than a
syphilis bacterium, and 450 times smaller than a single human sperm.
The standard U.S. government leakage test (ASTM) will detect water leakage
through holes only as small as 10 to 12 microns (most condoms sold in
Canada are made in the U.S.A., but I'll mention the Canadian test below).
Roland says in good tests based on these standards, 33% of all condoms
tested allowed HIV-sized particles through, and that "spermicidal agents
such as nonoxonol-9 may actually ease the passage."
Roland's paper shows electron microscopy photos of natural latex. You can
see the natural holes, or intrinsic flaws. The "inherent defects in
natural rubber range between 5 and 70 microns."
And it's not as if governments don't know. A study by Dr. R.F. Carey of
the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that "leakage of HIV-sized
particles through latex condoms was detectable for as many as 29 of 89
condoms tested." These were brand new, pre-approved condoms. But Roland
says a closer reading of Carey's data actually yields a 78% HIV-leakage
rate, and concludes: "That the CDC would promote condoms based on [this]
study...suggests its agenda is concerned with something other than public
health and welfare." The federal government's standard tests, he adds,
"cannot detect flaws even 70 times larger than the AIDS virus." Such tests
are "blind to leakage volumes less tha one microliter - yet this quantity
of fluid from an AIDS-infected individual has been found to contain as
many as 100,000 HIV particles."
As one U.S. surgeon memorably put it, "The HIV virus can go through a
condom like a bullet through a tennis net."

I have read this book and am grateful for the information. Finally, a well-written, comprehensive, informative book that dispels
many myth, myths that have been around for decades. With this book, you can arm teenagers and young adults with life saving
information. Condom Sense is bold and brave in a time when even pharmacists are being given the power not to dispense The
Pill for personal reasons. What is next? Condoms? I live in an area that has an alarming teen pregnancy rate and a growing
AIDS epidemic. This same area is trying to make "abstinence only" the sex education policy of the schools. Condom Sense
should be required reading. Thank you Dr. Monica Sweeney and Rita Grisman for taking on this subject in such an eloquent and
necessary way. When will the book be available in Spanish?
Superb guide! Give this to someone and save a life.

I thought I had all of the facts about condoms and STDs, and I was dead wrong. Do YOU know which, if any, forms of Hepatitis
a condom protects you against, for instance? I didn't. This guide covers the material comprehensively.
Sweeney packs the guide with practical, life-saving information. It's a clear, concise, and (actually) entertaining read, despite the topic. I'm giving it to my friends for Valentine's Day. Everybody -- White/Black - Straight/Gay - Man/Woman - Adult/Child -- needs to either be informed for the first time, or have the facts laid out for them again. Condom Sense is a great way to do that. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This is one of the unique books which covers this very important topic of infections in an immunocompromised infants and children.
With the advent of more powerful immunosuppressive medications used in transplantation, the risk of oppurtunistic infections
is very high and continues to be one of the major causes of morbity and mortality. This book has given a lot of importance
to the management of such infections in an immunosuppred inidvidual.

"Mortal Combat" tells how South African President Thabo Mbeki fell under the influence of quack AIDS theories at exactly the
moment when the disease was becoming a massive public health crisis in South Africa. His government's halting and confused
response to the epidemic was one of the great tragedies of post-1994 South Africa -- and one of the world's great policy idiocies
of recent decades.
Mbeki was emotionally unable to accept the fact that HIV spreads through sexual contact, lest that finding "vindicate" racist attitudes about African culture. Groping for alternative explanations, he seized on dissident AIDS theories circulating on the internet, which blamed AIDS on poor nutrition and poverty. His endorsement of crackpot "science" had literally deadly results: it empowered his health minister (a heavy-drinking ANC hack) to delay the roll out of ARVs for years and to push "traditional" African remedies on a population of sick poor people who looked to the government for guidance. Eventually, Mbeki's anti-science policy was reversed in the face of opposition from civil society, unions, the courts, and the ruling ANC party itself -- but not before tens of thousands of South Africans had died unnecessarily. In the process, South Africa and the ANC became the laughingstock of the world.
"Mortal Combat" is informative, clearly written, and committed to science-based public health (which can't be taken for granted in South Africa). It also reproduces dozens of hilarious Zapiro cartoons. However, I took off one star because the book is based mostly on secondary sources and newspaper articles, and stays narrowly focused on AIDS denialism and its impact on policy -- it doesn't even attempt to tell the whole epic history of the AIDS epidemic in South Africa. But the heart of "Mortal Combat" is in the right place and it is essential reading for every educated South African -- especially the next generation of ANC leaders. Let's hope they learn from Mbeki's folly.

...not a great read. Webb isn't the best writer and the book is an often clumsy mismash of theory and data written by someone
whose knowledge of disciplines such as statistics, epidemiology and behavioral psychology seems no better than an undergraduate's.
There is one incredibly tedious chapter where Webb tries to outline his sociological theory that I just decided to skip about
a third of the way through. On the other hand, as someone who has longed to get a better understanding of the heterosexual
epidemic in Africa especially, I did learn a lot from most of the other chapters. But if you're already knowledgeable about
the basic causes of the epidemic in Africa, this is worth skipping.

This is a great reference for infection control practices in the field or in ambulance settings but unfortunately, the information
is outdated. Since this book was published (in 1993), the CDC has come out with new guidelines--standard precautions and
transmission-based isolation precautions. Looking forward to the next edition!
