On the Birth of Your Child by Sherry Conway Appel is a collection of charming anecdotes, useful advice, and words of wisdom about parenting offered by those who have "been there, done that." This slender volume is packed with touching, heartfelt advice that makes for an easy, joyful read.

This book would be a perfect gift for someone who has just discovered they are pregnant, for someone who just had a baby, or for someone who has temporarily forgotten the joys of parenthood.

Just what does being "the big sister" mean?
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-12
I bought this book for my daughter, who is the big sister to identical twin boys. I was very pleased with the content, as it definitely pinpointed just how busy life with newborn twins is. Through the eyes of Katie, the big sister in the story, my daughter could relate with the experiences and the task of being the "big sister" during the first year of life to twin babies. It is an overwhelming job, sometimes one that is not quite welcome for an older sibling who still feels "little." My daughter shared this book with her classmates, because she felt so connected with the story. The end delighted her, as I am sure it will others, because Katie did finally realize how special she was because she was "bigger."

Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-12
Palliative Care for Infants, Children, and Adolescents: A Practical Handbook is a beautifully written, practical resource for any health-care professional who works with children and families. Rather than laying out only checklists and protocols, the authors focus on the process of decision-making and relationships formed with families. This edited volume retains a strong and supportive voice throughout as it sensitively and directly addresses some of the most difficult situations that health-care-providers (and families) face. It weaves in not only specific suggestions for managing medically difficult and emotionally complex situations but also frameworks for understanding and more broadly applying these approaches. Don't wait until you are faced with a crisis to look at this book -- use it as a guide to think about end-of-life and chronic care for children long before conflict or crisis emerges.

It's great to have a book full of 'friends' to turn to for ideas. Covers just about every issue you'll face with a toddler. Helpful hints that get you thinking... Another great A-Z book - written from a mother/expert's point of view is Perfect Parenting - The Dictionary of 1000 Parent Tips by Elizabeth Pantley.

I caught Dr Berman's appearance on the Today show just 4 days after our daughter was born stillborn 4 weeks ago. I gave birth at Yale New Haven Hospital (where Dr Berman practices) so I dont know if it was coincidental that I saw this just as we too were experiencing this great loss. To make a long story short, this book has helped me tremendously!! I read thru it in 2 days and cried at every single page. I found it very helpful that my husband and I are not the only ones going thru this sort of pain. The book is full of poems and stories from people who have been thru similiar experiences. This book and Dr Bermans website ...has really opened my eyes and heart to other women who have experienced this. I have been given other books on this subject by friends and family over the past month..and this one is by far superior! I now have a great support group of other people who have had a stillborn child in their 3rd trimester. ...

A classic in the field of attachment theory
Helpful Votes: 26 out of 28 total.
Review Date: 1996-11-18
Mary Ainsworth, a student of Bowlby, is a pioneer of attachment theory. This book describes her seminal experiment called "The Strange Situation," which tested how infants responded to reunion episodes with their mothers. Using this experimental setup, Ainsworth and her coworkers were able to identify securely attached babies and two types of insecurely attached babies. Long-term follow-up studies by other researchers have confirmed these findings and shown that there are long-term serious consequences for those infants who suffer attachment pathology in the early months of their life. A classic. Ivri Kumin, M.D
