academic detective story - great read
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-04
Compassionate and humanistic, this book examines the academic evidence for the authorÕs hypothesis that a womanÕs body, personality and behavior determines the sex of the infant. This clearly written and easily accessible book reads like a good detective story. It takes the reader, whether university lecturer, parent-to-be or college student through the labyrinthine twists and turns of the latest studies in developmental psychology, evolutionary biology, animal behavior and reproductive physiology to the authorÕs simple yet profound conclusion: the gender of the infant is not a matter of chance, it rests with the mother. The book is a refreshing reminder of the need for dialogue between the different academic disciplines, and it is not accidental that such a book comes out of New Zealand, and that it is written by a woman academic, Dr Valerie Grant, lecturer in Behavioural Science at the School of Medicine, University of Auckland. The author combines academic rigor with a breadth of research and learning in a broad range of fields. While her conclusions will be controversial and unacceptable to many, both her hypothesis and her on-going research may shed a revolutionary light on one of the most fascinating questions every pregnant mother ponders: is it a boy or a girl?

Couldn't do clinicals without it!

I love this book. A lot of my fellow 2nd year nursing students bought it after they saw mine. My only complaint is that there is only pathology; no wellness or risk for diagnoses, like ineffective breastfeeding; it is only by diagnosis. It has come in very helpfully for care plans.

Kylie's Mommy

Review Date: 2006-02-20
My daughter received this beautiful book from my best friend. She and I love mermaids and she did a search on Amazon for mermaid books and this popped up. Not only is the bedtime story sweet, the pictures are vivid and lovely. I also love the fact that the mer-mommies and daddies are of different colors. I started to read this to my daughter when she was 2 months old and she was very attentive when this book was open. She is now 6 months old and is still captivated when I read this to her. Sadly, my best friend passed away recently but she knew how much my daughter loves this book. Hopefuly Kylie will share "Aunt Mia's" love of beautiful and magical mermaids.

Babywear & children's clothing will no longer have any secrets after you have used Winifreds' book. It explains how to make all styles for all ages and then some. It's easy to use and written in plain english! The best I've ever come across and I would highly recommend it for both beginners and advanced patterns makers.

Great resource for feeding your baby!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-11
This book may be out of print but it's a great resource for anyone interested in making their own baby food. Behan gives concise information about cooking up foods for the beginning eater and the more sophisticated palate. She starts with a section about what parents need to know about nutrition and food safety for children. Then she has an extremely useful section on individual foods that discusses preparation, cooking, how to serve to infants or toddlers, storage, and nutrition Then the last section provides recipes for a wide variety of dishes that may appeal to your child.

This book stays on my kitchen counter as I introduce new foods to my infant. Butternut squash (something I don't personally eat), the book tells you how to cook it in the microwave for 10 minutes (easy!) scoop out and puree. It was great! The baby loved it and I thought even I'd eat it! Why pay 50 cents a jar for mashed bananas at the grocery store when you can easily do it yourself at home? This book gives you all the information you need and even some great ideas.

It is an older book so some of the information about safety is a little outdated (she discusses alar and apples for instance). It would benefit greatly from a new edition. But it is still a wonderful resource that I highly recommend.

My husband and I love this book; we think it's invaluable to parents in order to teach us how to really love, nurture and teach our children from the start. We've purchased this for many a new parent and would love to see it come back into print. Any books by Dr. William Sears and his wife, Martha, would be a great addition to your library or to give as a gift.

Beautiful and Useful!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-05
Darlene Kane's book, based on a real event, is a story about a girl named Katie whose baby sister Hannah dies from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It is told through the voice of a young girl, and is accompanied by 25 (26 including the cover) illustrations by grade school children.

As a psychotherapist who has been practising for over 20 years, and has a specialty in grief and loss, I know how important it is to have the right tools for dealing with young children. This book will help any parent, teacher or therapist who is dealing with SIDS and needs an effective way to help younger children work with their feelings and thoughts around the loss.

The illustrations were obviously made with love and care. Each one is unique in its beauty and will provide wonderful opportunities to dialogue with a child about what they are seeing and feeling as they look through the book.

Thank you Ms. Kane for your contribution to creating healing in the hearts and minds of our children and their families.
