I got this gift for my wife. She wrote in it everyday and is a special time for her to talk and read to the baby. Now the baby is here she reads what she was thinking and it calms the baby down.

I love how it mentions that there are scriptures(one review states how they wished it mentionied it, it was) and the information about the book was identical for the product that we recieved.

We now give this book to anyone that announces there pregnancy!

A girlfriend gave me this book in the beginning of my pregnancy. It provided a special opportunity to share my love and thoughts with my daughter before she was here and continue to write meaningful messages to her through the introductory statements for each letter to baby. I recently bought it to give to three women who are expecting. This book is unique in that it explicitly provides ways to share God's love and your thoughts on God with your child.

I received this book as a gift when my daughter was born. I've enjoyed every moment of writing in this book to my daughter and I can't wait until the day when she's old enough that I can pass this on to her. It will definitely be something special she can cherish as much as I cherish her.

I agree that this book is absolutely Christian. It's too bad that people have bought it without knowing that, and ended up resenting that aspect of it. I had the opportunity to read through it at the bookstore, so I was well aware of the nature of the book.

It is beautiful and celebrates the joy of motherhood. I felt excited writing such special things to my baby, and now that she is born, I love writing even more things to her, knowing more of her personality and the joy she has brought to our home. As someone else stated, the lead-ins really get you thinking, and help you relay more personal feelings than you might normally consider. The poems before each section are special and heart-warming, too.

I would recommend this book to any Christian mothers out there who want to make something special for their baby to cherish later in life.

This journal is GREAT! I love the scripture passages that help you focus on the miracle and blessing of having a child. From the day you find out to the months after, this gives your great prompts to record your emotions and tell your baby how much you love her/him.

Helen Oxenbury's illustrations make this book so appealing to toddlers and parents alike. The bright colors and playful style really draw you in. The author's use of repetition is also great, which my daughter enjoys. This is a long book and she can easily sit in my lap and focus on the entire story, allowing me to finish reading before she turns the pages. I agree with the other reviewer - the cousin fighting with the baby is kind of a negative aspect of the book, but often I will substitute other words on those pages. This is a must-have addition to any multicultural book collection!

I purchased this book for my 2 year old daughter to replace a paper back one I previously purchased that was destroyed by various infant beverages (hmmm...I wonder who did that).

Anyhoo...the book exceeded my expectations beyond my greatest imagination. My daughter and I already loved the book to pieces, but getting the hard covered one really has made it that much more of a favorite.

This story is a definite must have for any black parent or any parent attempting to raise a race-neutral child. The illustrations are big (which keeps my daughters attention), the story offers the repetition that children respond to (my daughter repeats many of the words with me), and helps parents teach about family members (mentions of cousin, daddy, mommy, aunt, nannie and gran-gran).

Enjoy this one with babies on up through the years.

P.S. Keep it out of reach of the kids if you want to keep it for years because it is sure to be a family favorite!

This book has been a family favorite for over 11 years. I first purchased this book for my son when he was 1 and am now reading it to my 2 year old daughter. My son still recalls the story, beautiful pictures but most of all family members and myself reading it to him time and time again. My daughter is now experiencing the same warm expressions of "family love" and beautiful pictures of an African American family celebrating a birthday but most of all being together. This book has become my daughter's favorite and she picks it up at least 4-5 times a day to be read. I've bought another copy just so she can have her own. My son has told me he wants to be keep his copy of the book so that he will be able to read this wonderful book to his own children.

This book is loved and enjoyed by my students (1st and 2nd grades)each and every year. The rhythm and repeat of Ms. Cooke's words captivate and charm. They are tickled with the antics of the family as they each arrive at the party. We have had great discussions about the choice of play and family differences each member brings to the party. Her message reminds each person listening that they too are loved "so much" by their family.

We have this book at our local child care centre. I love the rhythm of the language and I love the illustrations and my little boy does too. What I don't like is the "pow-pow", "I want to fight the baby" part. It's not an idea that I want to encourage at all - some good natured wrestling can be fun, of course, but it needs a lot of explanation. All of the carers naturally substitute other words to illustrate the story; usually I say that the boys want to tickle the baby. Parents and carers who want to promote a less violent world should be aware of this.

Full disclosure: I am a new parent. And, despite the volumes of information from books and advice from other parents, I have found the experience to be often baffling. (And I consider myself to be educated and reasonably intelligent.)

Perhaps it is the avalanche of information and advice under which I've been suffocating that makes this book so pleasant. The pictures are appropriate and cute (though none of these babies are as cute as my daughter) and the brief answers to questions like "why do some newborns open only one eye at a time, cross their eyes, or roll their eyes back" (all of which my daughter does) offer jolts of relief when needed.

OK, this book is no Dr. Spock or What to Expect in the First Year; still, it's a fun little book that I've found offers relief when your child really does seem a cipher.

I always lamented the fact that babies don't come with operating instructions. I knew What to Expect When I was Expecting, but not after. With little baby experience, and even less baby BOY experience, when my babies were born I was forced to trust my instincts and absorbed advice from friends, hoping that I was somewhere in the ballpark of "doing it right". And now, here's exactly the book that would have helped.

The book is beautifully done and answers mysterious questions like WHY baby sucks her thumb, or bangs her head or plays with her poop. Each page of text is balanced by a photograph of a beautiful baby - some featuring acne, even, when we're wondering Why Babies Have Acne. This is a great book for parents of young babies - I've already given it as a baby shower gift to great reviews.

This was such a well written and easy to read book. So often, relationship guidance is written in a style which seems to be meant for fellow therapists. This book used humor and everyday language and situations to efficiently get the points across. There is enough repetition of the advice, but not too much. I will end up reading it again and recommending it to my friends.

Dr. Bernstein has captured the essential elements not only to rebuilding and strengthening a fractured relationship, but really to live a happier life. All it takes is an open mind, and a little dedication to the process, and by reading and practicing the simple tips outlined, you can truly transform the quality of your life. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anybody who would like to improve their relationship with their spouse/partner. What you gain from reading this book is not just a profound improvement in your primary relationship, but a way to create happier, balanced relationships with other people in your life as well. These are practical, real tips that can be applied to everyday situations (I've even improved the quality of my worklife by discovering how negative I was, and how my toxic thoughts were impairing so many areas outside of my relationship issues).

This excellent book, written by family therapist Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein, is practical, easy-to-follow, and a quick read. Although it is not an instant panacea for relationship ills it did make me recognize my own (negative) contributions to my relationship with my husband and, later, with other, less integral people in my life. Be open-minded, willing to learn, and spend the time and thought to do the exercises honestly. I read this book prior to choosing Dr. Jeff as a therapist and cannot speak highly enough about him. (Yes, I am fortunate enough to live in the same area as his practice!)

A great book! Mr. Downey entertains while delivering important, every-day advice to new dads. Dad's will laugh out loud and feel re-assured that they're not total failures at fatherhood. With his unpretentious writing style and unique brand of wit, Mr. Downey covers everything from baby's first steps to "permanent" birth control options, and he never fails to entertain. Dad's can only hope that Mr. Downey continues to share his thoughts and experiences through his children's pre-pubescent and teen years.

Finally, a down-to-Earth, no-holes-barred reference book for new Dads. No fancy terminology - just creative terminology. No detailed psychological analysis from a group of doctors who pride themselves on using 10-syllable words - just the blunt facts from an everyday-Dad's point of view. An extremely humorous, yet insightful view into Dadism.

A perfect follow-up to Downey's "So You're Gonna Be A Dad". I could only hope he continues his wizardry of words addressing prepubescent teenagers!!

As a 46 year old father of 2 young children, I have found this book to be very informative and very humorous(actually at times horrifying for fathers to be). The book could be classified as humorous horror for fathers. Peter Downey touches on all important aspects of childrearing in a down-to-earth, easy to read, practical, "lets get our hands dirty on this" fashion. Fathers with children will really identify with the problems discussed in this book. He doesn't shy away from touchy topics like sex, nudity in front of the children or physical discipline. He's obviously read the "professionals" on childrearing and his advice on how to deal with the many problems we dads encounter reflects this, but is also heavily flavoured with his own personal strategies developed on the frontlines of being a dad to 3 children himself. Of course, if you're a perfect dad, doing everything right or if you're not a dad you may want to read the book for it's humour, with which Peter is not stingy.

A MUST READ for all Dads: Old and New

Downey's book is a must read for all dads, old and new to this game of parenting. I was the fortunate recipient of this book, and having read Downey's earlier book, "So You're Gonna Be A Dad," I knew immediately that Downey would deliver with hilarious material that would make a difference in raising my two daughters. I have not been disappointed.
One significant diifference between Downey's book and others is that his approach diminishes the anxiety that comes with being a dad. He lets you know that there's a lot of other guys going through the same things, and they're all doing just fine.
Perfect holiday gift--better yet, the PERFECT gift to give Dad when his son or daughter turns two. I give Downey's book, "Dads, Toddlers, and the Chicken Dance" the highest rating possible: *****.

Simply put, this is a very beautiful story. I think this would make a wonderful gift for anyone with a new baby, but especially for any couple who perhaps had a long journey to finally become parents (infertility or adoption). The last two pages of this story are especially heartwarming: 'We'd dreamed a baby, we'd wanted a baby, we'd planned for a baby, we'd waited and waited and waited for a baby, until finally, there was you.' Last page: 'And oh, how we love you!' I love this story for these two pages alone.

Put this wonderful book in your shopping cart and hit "buy now" as soon as you can. I wish that I had had this wonderful tool twenty years ago when I was starting my children's portrait business. Each chapter really guides you through the tools that you will need to succeed in taking impressive images of children. If you take it seriously, and do the assignments, you just might start seeing things in a different light, so to speak. Whether you just want to capture whimsical images of your own child as he passes through the phases of childhood, or if you truly intend to make photography more than a passion, but a business, then this book will take you to your desired level.Every page will delight you with amazing images of children. The various contributing photographers offer individual treatments to their subjects showing you a variety of what is plesaing. Read it, work it, absorb it and find your place in this fascinating field. I can't get enough of the timeless beach portraits found in Chapter 7.

Having three daughters, documenting their childhood with photographs is a real priority for me. But I really lacked knowledge on how to take good photographs - I always relied on the auto settings on my camera and the pictures seemed so ordinary. In the attempt to learn more about photography, I purchased this book along with a couple of others. This book, by far, was the most helpful for me. I had been having a hard time wrapping my mind around the concepts of aperture and ISO, but this book really helped me understand! Each picture listed the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, which helped me see what those things were doing to affect how the picture looked. Also, the pictures were so inspiring and gave me tons of ideas on composition. The assignments at the end of each chapter were helpful in developing my skills. The book was very pleasent to read and it's definitely a book for parents aspiring to become better photographers! My only wish was that the pictures also listed what type of lens was used (so that I could buy it and have the lenses that the professionals used!).

Dr. Phelan has done a wonderful job at describing the right and wrong ways of approaching teenagers. I have recommended this book to my parents for many years. Too many times parents choose to discuss something on the spur of the moment, leading to blow ups and frustration on both parts. Dr. Phelan's recommendation to schedule a time and then also start with what is good, responsible, or mature with the teen before diving into the problem are on the money. This is exactly how they are trying to train business managers to work with their employees (although not all of them follow the advice). A collaboration to aid in the growth of the teen into a mature, responsible, relatively happy adult is needed. This book brings ideas and strategies to the reader to help reach that goal.

Surviving Your Adolescents: How to Manage and Let Go of your 13 - 18 Year Olds by Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D, 2nd edition is a book I highly recommend for parents of any teenagers. Dr. Phelan is a registered Clinical Psychologist who has worked with children and families for over twenty-five years and he knows what works to help families run smoothly, even in the roughest of times. In the book he tells what is normal adolescent behavior, and risk-taking is normal! He gives terrific ways to keep good communication channels open with your teenager while still teaching and modeling the behavior you hope for yet understanding and discussing in ways that are not a big turn-off, the behaviors the teen exhibits in natural rebellion to rules. These are the years when peers are more important than parents, experimentation is normal in the quest for becoming one's own person, but the pitfalls are many, and the book recommends excellent ways of avoiding these or working through them and still keeping a good relationship. He discusses what is abnormal and needs professional help also. The book is easy to read with excellent, practical suggestions of ways that work. By all means ORDER THIS BOOK NOW!!

"Surviving Your Adolescents--How to Manage and Let Go Of Your 13-18 Year Olds" is brilliant and simple. I whole-heartedly recommend it for any and every parent of teens. Dr. Phelan's advice is perfectly reasonable. There is a section called "Managing Testing and Manipulation" and great coaching on both understanding different perspectives and choosing what kind of role to take in various situations.

But parents beware, parenting teens will require you to grow and change! Dr. Phelan gives control back to parents all right, but it requires us parents controlling ourselves--old habits, maybe learned from our parents or born out of frustration. We are given a dose of reality about measuring what is really important (recognizing what is "minor but aggravating" and when outside intervention is necessary). In this book you will learn which very common behaviors we parents fall into that contribute to discord.

It's always good to know that you're not the only one going through the challenges of parenting teens and Dr. Phelan gives over his wisdom, advice, and experiences in a direct way with humor and compassion. If you are in need of some guidance in parenting your teens, get this book, read it (and don't forget to take some time to enjoy your teens).

If possible, this book is even more useful than "1, 2, 3 Magic", simply because adolescents are more trying to a parent than a toddler, if that can be imagined! I suggest giving this book to every parent on their child's 12th birthday. I have eight children and wish I'd read this book first.

I loved this book. It puts everything about life into perspective. I found myself checking my own life - am I doing the best I can as a father? Am I truly supportive of my family in the things that matter? Do I see the best in my children? This book challenged me to grow. I found too that I felt inspired after reading. It is an awesome source of hope for families.

I can say I'm the proud mother of a preemie - 22 wks, weighed 397 grams (14 ounces) and 11 1/2 inches long. He spent the first 5 months of life in the NICU. He (Zuri - Kiswahili for 'beauty') is doing well now. He's 2 1/2 yrs old and is a strong toddler. He has some minor developmental delays but otherwise he's here and healthy! Hang in there parents and read all these stories. You ARE not alone...you didn't BRING this on yourself and you WILL survive it!

Brave and honest

Having an ex-preemie myself, I was so relieved to find the truths in this book, the ones the Hallmark Card Preemie Books don't say: what it's like to bring home a sick child, what it's like not to know his future, what it's like when the doctors turn out to be wrong or to have lied. Many many preemies end up like Alex with disabilities (mine did) and it's so important for their stories to be told. Right on, Jeff.

This is a very accurate account of what it's like ...

I am a grandparent of preemies, so I know that Jeff Stimpson's book is an honest and moving account of what it's like to watch a brave tiny baby go through medically necessary procedures that you can't bear to watch, and then what it's like to take a preemie home who is extremely fragile and on various medical equipment. Coming through an experience like the one related in "Alex: The Fathering of a Preemie" is something that changes your perception of the world forever, and makes you acutely aware of the fragility of life, and how poignant every day is that we have with our loved ones.

Compelling account of raising a very tiny preemie

Alex, The Fathering of a Preemie is the compelling first hand account of raising child who was born extremely premature. Alex was born weighing only 23 ounces and spent one year in Neonatal Intensive Care in the hospital. As you might expect his time in the hospital was rocky, a wild ride on the often frightening preemie roller coaster. Once he came home from the hospital he still needed oxygen and feeding assistance for several years. Even as he began to get stronger, concerns were raised over developmental issues as he moved through preschool.

Jeff Stimpson skillfully describes in intimate and accurate detail the emotional and practical impact of raising a very small preemie. The ups and downs, the joys and grief, the worries and just pure frustrations are beautifully elaborated. For most people who face this reality, life is an exhausting and apparently never ending blur, filled with emotional highs and lows. Jeff shows that parents can not only survive this journey, but maintain their hopes and sense of humor. His love for his son shines through on every page.
