Infants Books

Every time an issue of the La Leche League NEW BEGINNINGS magazine arrives in my mailbox, I read every page because I love to hear other parents' stories. This book was wonderful to me since it took the best stories from many older issues and pulled them together in one place. What's best is that although the book is older (1987), everything is still relevant. Breastfeeding is still about more than nutrition, and loving guidance and other mothering still make for strong families.

THis book is packed with so much excellent guidelines and ideas for stimulating your kids intellectually, socially, and emotionally. It tells parents the why, how and when to interact and teach with your children. Really invaluable information. And with all the creative ideas, crafts and games that you can easily do and apply at home, it also serves as a very good rainy day 'ideas book". All stay-at-home or home schoolers will benefit from this book.

This book is easy to read, and the scientific data on development is put into day-to-day activities and tasks, which makes it easy to relate to. The book talks about development week by week, month by month, how the child is developing and what you can do as a parent to guide your child's development; which toys are good, when crucial periods take place for learning certain tasks etc. The photographs in the book are also very illustrative, and makes the book a fun-read as well. I would recommend this book for all parents. Wouldn't we have a better world if every parent would have to read this kind of literature? I am a developmental psychologist and Ph.D.-trainee in educational psychology. I just had my first child and I loved this book.

As a librarian and educator, I read this book and found that it contained essential information for parents and caregivers of young children. At a time of peak brain development, young children are in desperate need of caring adults in their lives who will foster vocabulary and oral language acquisition. Another essential book that can be considered a companion to this one is Betty Bardige's "At a Loss for Words."

"Lethal Secrets" takes a long-range view of donor insemination by interviewing donor offspring, donors and parents years after the fact. Taking a hard look at the ramifications of secrecy and donor insemination is not the norm, nor is advocating for openness. Many, if not most, doctors, patients and sperm banks continue to advocate for secrecy, blithely ignoring the psychological dangers of this widespread practice. Baran and Pannor are ahead of their time. They support donor insemination, yet argue persuasively for openness: not only is it every child's right to know the truth of his or her genetic heritage, it is healthier for the parents and the donors, as well. If you are considering using donor insemination or even donor egg to have a child, this book is invaluable. I only wish the authors would write a book specifically about the psychological aspects of using donor egg

What an amazing book! A must have for the new mother or a wonderful shower gift, for that special mother/baby. Brought tears to my eyes, a few times. A book that can't be put down, until you've read it all. Have fun reading!

Blumfield's book tells the truth about the difficulties of early motherhood, and gives practical, realistic tips on how to deal with the various challenges. I have three children, whom I love dearly -- and I had an extremely hard time after each of them was born. I don't know whether I had PND or just a severe case of baby blues, exhaustion, and not enough support, but this book helped me feel that I wasn't alone, wasn't insane, and could love my baby and still hate early motherhood. And even for those who have an easier time, motherhood is a whopping emotional adjustment -- I recommend this book to every new or expectant first-time mother.

Have you ever wanted to read a book where the author decides to "rip out" one of the chapters, or leaves a blank page for you to 'draw' one of the characters? Would you enjoy an 18th-Century story which takes many chapters before the hero is born? The tale is touchingly told. The characters are real, and constantly fascinating. It's not their fault that their story is frequently interrupted by outlandish "digressions" on the part of an author so creative that his modern descendants are considered to be Joyce and Beckett as well as many others. Would you enjoy a chapter about Chapters? About buttonholes? About whether parents and their children are kin to each other? A chapter on curses? Laurence Sterne has so much trouble getting Walter and Toby Shandy downstairs that he calls in the "critics" to do it. Advice on reading such an unusual, even unique book: read the first several chapters, then stop and reread them. Continue that process and soon the book will feel quite familiar, and that's when the fun starts! Walter loves arguments about anything. Uncle Toby enjoys building military models. Tristram is quite busy just trying to get born and baptized with the correct name. His mother Elizabeth argues with her husband Walter about midwives and their methods. (Their wedding contract is here for you to peruse...it causes some problems itself.) This volume "3" consists of the Notes on the text (which is found in volumes "1" and "2".) Amazon also lists several less expensive paperback editions of the novel, the preferred one being the Oxford World Classics Edition.

This is an excellent text. I know Drs Spiegel and Wright personally. They do an excellent job of providing an extremely comprehensive text on pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. Adam Koenigsberg MD
