I was ready to teach sign language to my daughter but I didn't know where to begin so I bought three different books including this one. All of the books taught me some things but I think this book was the easiest to use. It has a lot of signs and tells you when to introduce them to your baby and it has photos of the signs plus a DVD to show you how each one is done. That was really helpful. The only sign my daughter has done yet is milk but I know she'll be doing more soon.

This is a great book for those who have lots of experience with children and those who have almost no experience. There are lots of resources available about babies (I particularly recommend Weiss' About.com Guide to Baby Care) but this book is just for the mother. It answers questions about what is normal postpartum and after. Weiss' book not only discusses things that go "wrong" but what can go "right", too. This book would also make a wonderful babyshower or blessingway gift.

my favorite type of book

The Evils of Infant Baptism, is a type of my favorite kind of book. It takes its thesis and it makes broad connections through history, politics, philosophy, and of course Biblical teaching. This book was written in 1852 and finds itself squarely within the Baptist tradition, as the author makes clear distinctions between Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and the Anabaptists in history and practice.

Foremost in the author's reasoning is the plain fact that infant baptism is nowhere found in scripture, and in fact did not appear in the church until the middle of the third century AD. From its appearance it has served to undermine the doctrines of universal depravity, justification by faith, and the work of the Holy Spirit in regeneration. Infant baptism has perpetuated the pagan superstitions that originally produced it, and is based on the very same grounds (patristic tradition) as all of the rest of Roman Catholicism, which places protestants on very shaky ground to be resisting "popery" (what a wonderful 19th century word). In fact, Howell claims that infant baptism will result in Protestantism collapsing back into Catholicism, a movement we are beginning to see today. He claims it produces dead protestant churches. This is undeniably true today. He claims it causes the church and the world to become practically identical, and makes those who have been sprinkled as infants inoculated to the true gospel. This is true today! The author shows how through history, those who practiced infant baptism, Catholic and Protestant alike, reserved persecution and death for those dreaded Anabaptists who remained true to the teaching of Christ and the apostles. Not just the Catholics, but Luther, Calvin and Zwingli were all guilty of persecuting and even killing those who would not agree with their infant baptism.

Howell also sheds light on some rather interesting topics: the relation of Old Testament Judaism to New Testament Christianity, the need for a separation between church and state, and the universal salvation of infants (sprinkled or not).

In all, I found this work to be highly informative, enlightening to read, and helped me to make connections in my mind between previously separated bits of information. Books that cause this kind of growth in my understanding of the world are my favorite kind to read, and I highly recommend it to others.

I just finished reading this book, and found it very informative and clearly written. The book begins with the less complex and leads to the very complex in a smooth, precise manner. Recently beginning work in a facility that deals with a clientel prodominately afflicted with CP, I found this book to contain and explain the vital information that I need to do my job as a well-informed dietetic technician. I highly recommend this book to parents and caregivers of the feeding disabled child.

Of course, being a new mom again, I haven't had time yet to enter my son's information into the book, but I have had time to look through it. I love the layout and the eye-catching pictures. I'm ordering a second one for my older daughter. Her book only went to age 1 and I want to continue to add information through age 5.

Any Dorling Kindersly book is sure to be enjoyed by all who look/read it!!

This is a very important book for the research it presents re. the nature & lifelong effects of parent/infant relationships developed through the first year of bonding. So soory it is out of print as there are few easily readable books on the market that help parents comprehend the data in such a beautiful way. Knowing that their child's entire future is effected by the nature of the relationships established in infancy with each of its parents, can assist parents in supporting optimum development of their child in all areas of the child's development: emotionally, intellectually, socially, physically and spiritually.

Please ask author to revise and reprint. Then, of course, notify me. Thanks!

Six weeks of hell...six weeks of my life I will never get back..six weeks of taking a beating. My daughter Kayla is so undeciplined, she can rip apart a household in 10 seconds. This book helped me control her for the first time in her life. Some of the tips I used was putting jalepheno juice on all of our stuff so she would not get at them without paying.I also used the diagram in the back of the book to construct a cage to keep her in when visiting family or friends.I have aged 10 years since she was born.I wear my pants to my ribcage.

One of the best child development/parenting books I know

Review Date: 2005-02-18
This book is one of the best parenting/child development books I know and I am sorry it is no longer in print. Month by month, through parents questions and comments and the insightful responses and guidance of the authors one can track the development of their child and the unfolding of the parent/child relationship. There is so much good, practical, patient and wise advice here about things like how to avoid the kind of damaging locked-horns, willful, tug-of-war relationships that spell disaster for too many parents and children. Some of the best chapters are on discipline, limit setting and punishment. Most parents have the best of intentions, but many of us lack the knowledge, the broad scope, long range wisdom and perspective to not end up repeating some of the disasterous mistakes that were inadvertently inflicted on us, no matter how desperately we may not want to. The guidance here is so sensitive and insightful without being controling; there is a good deal that's both inspiringly knowledgable and appreciative of the huge responsibility and tremendously difficult task we undertake when we have children. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

I am a first-time mom who was afraid to even put a diaper on her new baby. This book has provided information and ease of mind for doing even the simplist tasks for your child. From how to put on a diaper to what to feed your child at 6 months - this book stays by my side as a quick informative guide.
