This was a great deal! I got a BRAND NEW 8th edition book for $20.00 less than other websites or bookstores. In addition, the book came with a free virtual clinical excursions CD that I haven't had a chance to use yet, but it looks to be helpful. So not only did I save $20, I also got something for free! This is a great buy, and you won't find a new book for a better price anywhere.

This is a great book that lives up to it's name___ practical. I think every intern, resident, attending to be should have this book. It contains real case scenarios and avoids, too much theoretical information.

A Must Have!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-01
This book is a "Must Have" for all parents, grandparents, and soon to be parents. Our children's words and actions are so precious and they must be preserved. Being a mother of two, I always say, "I'll write that down when I get home" and I forget, or I do write a quote down on a small piece of paper only to misplace it before I get it in the baby book. This is the perfect way to capture our children's thoughts and words. They are little for such a short time, we need to write it all down. Our children will thank us and we will be grateful also! This book would make a perfect gift for showers, a new baby, and Mother's Day just to name a few! Buy one for yourself and a friend!

The title of my first book is going to be - "Why Didn't I Think of That!" This author has done an amazing job of creating the obvious. I have three children who are extremely funny and I always am being told to write down the things they say. I have never been organized enough to find some type of journal to log all their stories .....until now. Thanks Vikiann Gunter!

Solutions for first time and other working parents
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-02-22
Your Baby And Your Work: Balancing Your Life is a concise, reassuring handbook for (new) working parents. Containing chapters of suggestions for help with problems with sleeping, nursing, feeding, health, play, and separation, Your Baby And Your Work is a deft resource. Thumbnail portraits of parents who have "been there and done that" recently with their children are presented, giving numerous suggestions and examples of solutions for first time and other working parents. Another topic addressed is the role of the other parent in child care, and how to encourage more co-parenting. In all, Your Baby And Your Work gives a firm glance at effective 'working' parenting practices, especially at that turning point when Mom or Dad or both return to employment and begin the dance of juggling child care and work responsibilities. It is most reassuring to hear directly from other parents who have experienced this transition successfully. This is a fine, useful resource for all working parents of young children. Grandparents and prospective parents are another targeted audience.

What a great way to keep track of my child's day. This comes in handy when talking with my sitter each day. It is amazing how quickly they grow and now I have the pages to see it happen, daily!

I purchased all three of Hanky Kids books and what a wonderful set! This book and My Big Day were the perfect baby shower gift. My girlfriend, who is going back to work, loved these books. They are just a perfect way to track a child's daily activities. With both books, my girlfriend will have her child's whole year in just two books!

A delightful joining of baby's developments and spirituality
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-06-16
I enjoyed the spiritual reflections of each monthly development as the baby grows. I used this book every month to see what to expect and to find a new way to look at our baby's changes and growth. It reminds us to admire the baby and God's gift. Although, she touches on a couple developments for each month, this is not a technical parenting book. Instead, it is a relaxing, reflection to enjoy what God has brought to your life through a child. Dr. Parish is also our pediatrician and truly respects and cares for children, which is exemplified in her conversations with the child more than the parent!

Every expectant/new parent should read this book
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.

This book highlights the rapid developmental changes your baby goes through from birth through the first 24 months of life. The book guides parents on how to help their child develop cognitive skills. It does not dictate what your child should have accomplished by month 3 or 6, etc. as other development books. Rather, it helps you recognize children develop at different speeds and as a parent you need to realize what stage of development the child is in, then use the learning games in the book to help your child learn to learn.

We loved it and look forward to using the outlined techniques with our baby.

The best text for dummies on child intellectual development
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-10
I haven't even finished the book yet and I'm raving. The author strikes a perfect balance between too dogmatic ("do it this way"), and too technical ("studies have shown..."). Dr. Jacob cites many studies and experiments to support his points, but does not leave you to wallow in information overflow. He then recommends specific activities you can engage your baby in to enhance intellectual development. No silver bullets, no unsubstantiated claims, but a well examined and researched theory and practice for the lay person. I'm buying several copies for friends and relatives who are interested in giving their baby the best care like I do for my 11 month old daughter. I only wish I had read it sooner!

This book has really made me aware of the constant learning that my one year old is doing! Gives great specific ideas on how to help your child play(learn), and explains how every little thing your toddler is doing, while seeming like nothing to you, is actually a skill. My daughter and I are getting along so much better since I have read this book because it allowed me to see things through her eyes!!!

I was so impressed with this book I bought 10 copies. I've sent five to my brothers/sisters and given 5 to colleagues who are new parents. So far their appraisal agrees with mine, 5 stars plus.

This is probably the most important investment you could make in a child's future.

Very helpful and fast read for new mothers

I got this book from the library and found it to be so helpful that I decided to buy a copy of my own. The instructions are clear and very simple, and also the book shows you what to do using pictures. It goes into how to breast and/or bottle feed without the huge lectures and guilt trips for mothers who decide to bottle feed. It doesn't include every aspect of child care but it's gives the new mom a very good start. It also helps that the book is short and very inexpensive. Makes a great shower gift, especially for the giver who is short on cash.

I was surprised to find no reviews of this book. After the birth of our first child, we received this as a gift and although this reference was a small paperback, it was so full of information I referred to it frequently. The photographs are terrific and this book is an excellent primer for any new parent who wants more information on how to manage the newborn phase of life. I highly recommend it.
