useless for me. Nice door stop. Very molecular as well. For libraries and onc people. not for general pedi residents. Could impress on rounds if you read this, but then you're just showing off. Best book for pedi residents in heme onc is the secret's book or the mattel children's pocket book.

Wonderful ideas with Flava!

I utilized this book, for a Couple's Shower. I had the parents-to-be, act as the judges for all events, this kept them in the center of all the action! Icebreakers: "Soul" Baby Foods(tough)and "Baby" Foods. Actual Games: Def Poetry Nursery Rhymes, and A Lullaby With Soul. I did adapt another game from 2 ideas in the book, "Hey Brotha's" (relay game). Some games you can make teams (gets more people involved - peer pressure to participate).

I was prepared to execute several cultural ideas provided, the committee thought they were not appropriate for "our couple" (always remember - 1) customized ideas 2) have flexability; and 3) have additional activities prepared).

Put Soul in your Baby Shower, was well worth my investment!! I obtained more executable ideas (guest were out of their seats and participating), than BlackBerry Soul Celebrations (more paper games).

Prizes should be practical-unisex (le:gift certificates). Happy Planning!

A must read for new parents!

I bought this book for a "new Dad" friend of mine. The book is informative and funny. Written in a straight forward language, it will teach you and make you laugh. I would highly reccommend this book not only for new dads, but also for new moms. Perfect for anybody that enjoys sports. The part about registering for baby stuff is priceless. And I have decided to go with a zone defense for my next holiday party. Definitely five stars! And when your kid gets a little older and inquisitive buy him Mercer's book "Smash It, Crash It, Launch It". I own it and rate it five stars too.

I bought this book for my husband and he loved it. He read it over the first weekend he had it. I have seen him open it several times since then. I have read parts of it and it is very funny and informative. It is written for guys, but I really enjoyed it myself. I think any new parent could benefit from it. The hints and advice are clear and easy to understand. This book and Be Prepared are the best dad books I have seen. They both combine humor and being helpful.

a women's history masterpiece

This historical work is truly skillful because it focuses on female leaders in reproductive rights and health other than Margaret Sanger. Before reading this book, I was unaware of the many other figures in reproductive health's history, but Rosen uncovers these figures and illustrates why their lives and actions were so important to this historical topic. A must read for women's studies' classes and any person who is interested in this aspect of women's (and society's) history.

This book was given to me as a gift last year when I began teaching early childhood. My kids LOVE it! It is the most requested book in our library. The kids love to get out the musical instruments and shake along with the music. Every preschool class should have a copy of this book.

This is absolutely adorable.

My godson,Austin, absolutely loves this story. AOL put it up on KOL Jr and he loves to listen to it on the computer. I will definately be adding this one to his collection. He giggles when he sees the adorable babies dancing the way he does and the part about,"Rockers' don't take naps." definately applies to him.

A book that will change the way you look at love &birthing

Review Date: 1999-11-09
The Scientification of Love is a book that looks at the very core of our love and our relationships. Dr. Odent research looks at love and birth as a continuum of our sexual life. He explores the role of oxytocin - " the love hormone" in labor, birth and breastfeeding, as well as, oxytocin's role in the maternal-infant attachment process that forms the basis for all our relationships in life. I started to read this book early one morning and couldn't put it down. It's thought provoking ideas have stayed with me since. When we can incorporate Dr. Odent's research and ideas we will bring about a change that will include; undisturbed birthing, bonding and a peaceful society.

I highly recommend this book for anyone planning or expecting a child as well as childbirth educators, doulas, midwives and physicians. Anyone that would like to help create peaceful birthing and thus a peaceful society will enjoy Dr. Odent's work.

oxytocin writ large for more loving humans

Under a deceptively simple and small format, this is perhaps the most sophisticated and far-ranging of all Michel Odent's books until now. It brings together Michel's clinical experience of uninterfered human birth with his more recent research on the links between 'primal' experiences - before birth, around birth and in the first year-, and well being later on in life, with thought-provoking insights in every single chapter. While some readers may already be aware of the importance of oxytocin, the 'hormone of love', and endorphins in all apsects of human sexuality including lactation, the book explores their role in a wider concept of love that encompasses maternal love as prototype of all love and mystical emotions in altered states of consciousness. A very wide range of evidence from the biological and other sciences as well as the humanities is brought together in a logical sequence of chapters followed by both a summary of each argument and a list of references. The cross-section of scientific papers included is impressive and keeps the reader on track to catch a glimpse of the whole, the 'unbroken mirror' of human behaviour. From a review of studies of oxytocin receptors in and outside the brain to the relevance of the disputed 'aquatic ape theory' and the salience of comparable features in the births of Buddha and Jesus, there is a concordance which specialist readers should remain open to. The argument is anything but a reductionist one; the more extensive our analysis of the molecular level, -the'scientification' of love-, the greater our understanding of how malleable the hormonal balance of humans as social beings can be.

For a long time, Michel Odent has been interested in culture from the perspective of birth and the handling of infants around the time of birth. One of the main hypotheses in this book, -quite a large piece of the mirror-, is that interference with the birth process can be linked historically with a long phase of human evolution in which aggressiveness was adaptive; yet 'homo ecologicus' has everything to gain from a full dose of love hormones at the start of life. As an anthropologist who has witnessed in her lifetime the undisturbed birthing of Amazonian forest people, then the havoc caused by enforced medicalisation and now the conscious but difficult revaluing of native ways, I endorse Michel's argument as the mnessage it also is. His book is an optimist one. It absolutely relies on reason and knowledge to expose how the physiological reduction of neocortical control during labour, -only possible if mothers are secure-, does not only facilitate the release and action of oxytocin during birth but also provides a starting point for harnessing the energies of love heralded by Teilhard de Chardin, in new cultural forms.

This is my 18 month old's FAVORITE Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-10
I highly recommend this book to all parents. My daughter is spellbound by it and we have read it several times each day for the past 6 or 7 months. It shows a babies development from birth to one and a half years--eating food with a spoon, crawling with a ball, bathtime, playing with toys, making faces with her brother, etc. My crawling daughter loved looking ahead to see photos of the older infant walking, and now that my daughter is older and can walk and play dressup with hats too, she loves looking back to see the younger baby taking baths or being swaddled. Great graphic design with large photos combined with small ones. Also a great picture dictionary of baby's first words.

A fantastic book, and not just for siblings! A+++++++++++

This is truly a great book for babies. It has been my little girl's favorite book since she was about three months old, and able to look at pictures. The format is just perfect: big-sized, clear pictures of a baby involved in every-day activities. The baby is seen from the time she is a few days old until she is an 18-month-old little girl. Charming! This book is even more captivating for children than those board books that show babies' faces. A winner!!!

This new book is the best and most up to date guide for parents of a shy child. The author effectively communicates his message -- that parents can help a shy child learn to live "successfully" with his or her natural temperament. Highly recommended.

A Must Have Book for Parents of Shy Children

I can't thank Dr. Carducci enough for writing this book. Dr. Carducci addresses the issue of childhood shyness with not only an excellent explanation of what shyness is but he also provides practical tips on how parents can help their shy child become "successfully shy". Dr. Carducci uses short stories to illustrate the obstacles a shy child encounters and integrates his tips to show how to better address the situation. My 4 year old daughter is a typical "slow to warm up" child and by implementing Dr. Carducci's suggestions my daughter now more easily adjusts to new situations, new people and new activities. This is a must read for parents of a shy child.

As always, Will Moses (as did his Grama before him) has hit the heart of rural America in his enchanting scenes. Don't forget to look for the full moon in each of his paintings! Silent Night and the Night Before Christmas were no exceptions. We sent one to our friends in Scotland who loved it!

A sweet tale, beautifully illustrated.
