As always, Will Moses (as did his Grama before him) has hit the heart of rural America in his enchanting scenes. Don't forget to look for the full moon in each of his paintings! Silent Night and the Night Before Christmas were no exceptions. We sent one to our friends in Scotland who loved it!
A sweet tale, beautifully illustrated.

Start Smart: Building Brain Power in the Early Years

I am the mother of three children-for obvious reasons- a stay at home mom. I just finished reading Start Smart. The information is easy to understand and the activities are simple to do. My kids love "Mr. Wiggle and Mr. Waggle." I told them that water fuels their brains and now they ask me for water all the time. We do cross-lateral movement together every morning and I am thrilled to know that something this simple is good for all of us. We eat our lunch on red placemats. I put a yellow placemat on top of my son's desk where he does his homework. Dr. Schiller's suggestions fit right into our everyday activities. I feel that I am making the best of my time with my little ones. My sister, who works with young children, gave me this book when my last child was born. She said,"Trust me on this one." So, to all you teachers and parents, I will quote my sister by saying,"TRUST ME ON THIS ONE!"
Great! Well Worth The Money!

Here is what I liked about this book:
1- It is in an easy to read format.
2- It give you the science behind the ideas. For example, it
talks about recent studies with smells and then provides you
with some ideas that are related to our sence of smell.
3- The ideas and activities are fairly easy to do at home. They
don't require exotic stuff or stuff that costs a fortune (for
the most part). They don't require a lot of time.
4- The activities are fun.

My only concern is that if you buy this book with the idea in mind that you are raising the next genius I think you are making a mistake. However, if you want some fun, easy to do ideas that you can do at home with very little money and effort, this is a great book. If you want to understand how the brain works in your child, this is a great book. If you think your child is musically inclined and want to provide more stimulation in that area, then you might find some good ideas in this book. Just don't think you are going to buy this book and then have a genius.
Great Book. Enjoy!

Sam's My Hero, Too!

This charming, simple tale of an adorable toddler, Petey, and his exuberant older brother, Sam, is told from Petey's perspective and packed with playful scenes that will remind small children of their own imaginary games. To play "Super Sam," Sam dresses up in bright red pants and a yellow top with a big "S" on the front and ties a light blue blanket around his neck for a cape. To Petey's obvious delight, Sam performs the usual superhero feats - i.e., "flying" (jumping from a chair to some cushions), showing his "strength" (lifting a toy truck high in the air), "leap[ing] tall buildings (piles of pillows), "climb[ing] the cliff" (their bunk bed) and "becom[ing] invisible" (hiding under a blanket). But can this superhero comfort a wailing Petey after Sam accidentally steps his finger while trying to "rescue" him from a stuffed bear? Rama's delightful, childlike illustrations in colored pencil, water-soluble crayon and watercolor make it worth your time to read the book and find out. Her simple illustrations are a perfect match for Ries' sparse text and make for great picture book for babies and toddlers. Highly recommended for ages 1 to 3.

Lori Ries' picture book taps into an age-old segment of family life: the big brother who seems like "superkid" to his younger sibling. And so..."Super Sam," who lifts toy trucks, leaps tall pillows, escapes teddy bears and, in the end, comes to little brother's rescue. Quick. Bouncy. Funny. Little siblings will love it. Solo kids will wish they had a super brother.

This beautiful baby book, filled with sweet watercolor reproductions, is perfect for parents of an adopted baby because it omits the standard "I first felt you kick" type language that sometimes doesn't apply to adoptive parents. After searching through dozens of books I was thrilled to find this one to use for my beautiful adopted daughter (it is also appropriate for boys because the colors are neutral).
This is a sweet keepsake for your perfect bundle of joy! I'm so glad I finally found it.
Another option is A Baby Book for You, by Boston Museum of Fine Arts (ISBN: 0-8212-2282-1). This one does include a page for "I felt you kick", but adoptive parents can easily remove it or complete the page if appropriate.

this book is a miracle!. After nothing had helped we tried this book because we were given it. Within three days our 2 year old son slept the whole night, without waking up! We could not believe it. It takes some energy to follow the book's strategy after all letting your baby cry is not fun at all. The idea is that you let him cry but go and look every 20 minutes, in order to let your baby know that you are still there and to make sure he's allright. Like this your baby learns to sleep BY HIMSELF. That is essential. Try it if you have problems. Jos Schuring, Haarlem Holland.

The sleep training philosophy is similiar to the Ferber method, but we found this book more helpful with lots of practical examples and suggestions. For example, our baby was standing in the crib and we didn't know what to do. Easy to read - I finished in an evening. Our infant cried for less than an hour the first night, half hour the second and then was sleeping through the night. I did not like the idea of letting our baby cry at all, but after 10 months I decided that a couple nights of a little crying probably would not scar him emotionally. Frequent checks allows you to know he is ok. Now he goes right to sleep with no struggle and hardly a wimper. Having friends who still can't get their three year old to sleep we decided it was better to deal with this earlier than later.

This book is a must for every clinician involved in the care of newborns, whether in private practice or academics. Every hospital neonatal unit should have one also. It discusses a multitude of congenital and neonatal skin disorders, many accompanied by excellent color pictures. Included are chapters on fetal skin development, structure and function of newborn skin, premature skin, and neonatal skin care. There are many concise tables on diagnostic and treatment issues, as well as differential diagnoses. Every attempt was made to include the latest information on pathophysiology, genetics, and treatment. This is a long-awaited book that will boost our knowledge and understanding of neonatal skin disorders, as well as improve the care we give to newborns.

My aunt, Susy, bought this book for me when my little brother was born back in 1987. It was such a wonderful book for me back then, and I still love it now. I have loved this book so much (and so hard - at times) that it's binding is all falling apart. My mom literally read it to me until the covers fell off! It's a wonderful book and such a huge part of my childhood.

What a treat this turned out to be. Our little one couldn't hear it enough, and our older one loves it too. She's eager to read it for
the baby and, in her unique style, "reads" and enacts from cover to cover. The words have a reassuring and appealing rhythm for the children, and mommy, daddy, and poor Uncle Jai have just about learned it all off by heart. With warm and winning illustrations it's a must for little ones getting to grasp with their environment.

My daughters (ages 4 & 7) and I loved the images that were painted with Ms. Cullens first book and with Thirsty Baby we again are not dissapointed! We love to read the book at bed time and can recite almost the entire book. Given the nature of the Thirsty Baby's "thirst for life" I find that it also motivates bathroom pit stops before bedtime (Always a plus.) Wonderful illustrations that keep you looking all over the page.
We loved it, and look forward to the next.

While spending two weeks traveling through Northern India a few years ago, I visited the Tibetan enclave in the village of MacLeod Ganj near Dharamsala and was quite impressed by the people in this small community. In contrast to the sometimes overwhelming and always stressful noise and chaos of the other places I had seen in India, the Tibetan community in India seemed calm, peaceful, and happy in a quiet way, and spending time among them made me feel at peace as well. Reasoning that the manner of upbringing of their children must be of crucial importance in making these people seem so peaceful and content, I bought this book hoping to learn how Tibetans raise their children and understand how that upbringing shapes their personalities and inner lives. Unfortunately I found this book rather disappointing. The authors devote a very large part of its content to descriptions of superstitious practices (e.g., those intended to drive away evil spirits, etc.) rooted in Tibetan shamanistic traditions and folklore. There is too little discussion of the spiritual practices that shape the inner lives of Tibetans, apart from a couple pages describing the way respect for all life is inculcated in Tibetan children and brief, passing mentions of similar issues. After finishing this book I still felt that the secret of the Tibetan inner balance and harmony that I had observed in India remained largely a mystery.

An easy read and certainly of interest to those wishing to understand Buddhist thought on life/death and the importance of birth/rebirth! This book sparked a series of readings for us and still going! Cultural differences between Eastern/Western birth experiences are also of interest here; the role of mother and birth SHOULD be more revered, as illustrated in this book, very nicely, no matter what your faith or background. Enjoy!

This is a good book that takes an intimate look at Tibetan culture. One of the most fascanating aspects of cultures is how each one has a different technique to raise their young ones. There is no other book like it to my knowledge. Neat parenting ideas, and great information about Tibetan culture.
