I didn't know anything about babies so I read it voraciously. I love that it includes babies of various ethnicities, talks about touchy subjects gently but thoroughly, includes adoptive parents and fathers and is accepting. I have another book that is very "by this age your child WILL be doing X" and this book doesn't do that or make me feel like I'm a failure if my child is developing at her own pace. My daughter is 14 months old and I went to the book for everything from vegetarian diets to pink eye.

My mom also loves it. A few weeks ago my parents came to visit and I went to sleep to my mom reading sections of the book to my dad.

An excellent book... a must for every mom and dad

I would highly recommend this book for every mom and dad.Written in a very clear and simple language with lots of relevant pictures, this book explains not only how to rear a child in an ideal manner but also helps to explain every mom different stages of her child's development and teaches her how to tackle minor problems that she might face during this period. I can still imagine every minor changes in the development of my son, every time when I read this book. Even for me with an experience in Paediatrics for several years as a doctor, this book gave me lots of confidence in taking care of my son. My husband also enjoyed thoroughly every single page of this book and learned a lot from it. A must read book for every mom and dad....

Infant trauma revealed through dreams

One of a kind. An excellent overview of dream analyis. Share believes in the reality of dream-memories for recapturing actual infant memories of traumatic experiences. If you've had enough of Elizabeth Loftus and her bogus research on "recovered memories," this work is a superb antidote. As one who has been through the mill, I can attest to its validity and insights. When I was less than three years old, I was raped by my father. For two years, the child within me, sent me concrete and detailed dreams of the rape and the scene of the crime. I have been looking for research that validates infant memory of trauma and I have found that research in Lynda Share's excellent book. Look carefully at her bibliography for addditional research material. There are people there I have never heard about, especailly Ella Sharpe and Phyllis Greenacre. Thank you, Lynda.

A wonderful childrens book for 8months plus. The story is a well constructed rhyme about the familiar things a child encounters in his/her home. The book also offers the advantage of touch and feel. My one year old son enjoys scratching at the sand in the sandbox and touching the furry bear. If you have young children this is the Perfect interactive book.

This is my 14-month-old daughter's favorite book for the last 3 months now. It's a nicely written rhyming book with lots of things to touch, like scratchy sand, nubbly towels, lacey curtains, etc. The book is VERY durable with a fabric border, we've read it 100's of times and it shows no wear at all. I recommend!

This is an exquisite book, perfect for the coffee table. I have had it there for several years. Yet, it never fails to draw the attention of anyone who sits in my living room. Even those who have seen it many times cannot resist picking it up and looking at the photos yet again. After owning this book for so long, I still see something fresh in the photographs any time I sit down and leaf through the book. Larry Labonte's text adds his own depth of personal experience to the book. I highly recommend it for parents, parents-to-be and anyone else who finds beauty in pregnancy, birth and the familial bond between babies and their parents.

Artist Larry LaBonte credits his two children for helping him to "understand the importance of paying attention." The photographs included within this exquisite collection invite the observer to do the same. Portraits of pregnant women curiously caressing their expanding bellies, of an infant stretching a tiny foot up until it bumps against her forehead, and of a father kissing his child's soft cheek, all capture a moment that might otherwise have passed unnoticed. Larry LaBonte has produced a work that exposes the startling beauty of the family bond

Awakening the Spiritual Aspects of Motherhood

Ms. Hallett has clearly and beautifully addressed the "other side" of postpartum days. Aside from the physical, the days and weeks after birth offer each mother the gift of awareness. Awareness of the child, her life and herself. These stories of women experiencing the first nudges of spiritual awakening through motherhood push us all to examine our own experiences with our children. The pages ask us to consider the existance of something more powerful around us. It is a one of a kind book, daring to look at the most powerful time in a woman's life. Thank you, Elisabeth Hallett, for recognizing the miracle of this time.

Uniquely spellbinding!

While I often pour through a book from cover to cover within a day or two, not so with Elisabeth Hallett's _In the Newborn Year_! I savoured it for weeks! With every revelation and each reported experience, I was cast further and further adrift on a sea of my own thoughts and memories, recalling with amazing detail my experience of that intense, joyful and sometimes tumultuous time of life referred to as the postpartum.

This book was definitely not what I expected! More than conventional stories of mother/infant bonding, Ms. Hallett gives us intimate and thought-provoking glimpses into her own and other women's postpartum experiences, which for many include voyages into exotic imaginal realms, and mysterious, sometimes disturbing altered states of awareness. From the blissful to the surreal, no two experiences described in her book are alike, yet they are connected by a common thread. The message is that even the most difficult of postpartum journeys are transformational opportunities for the psyche which may lead, not only to a deep and more intimate connection between mother and child, but also to greater levels of personal growth and self-awareness, and the birth of enhanced creativity and freedom. My only regret is that _In the Newborn Year_ was not yet published when I began my own journey into motherhood!

Though I don't do everything exactly as Laurie Boucke teaches in her book, I have found this method of dealing with elimination to be a good experience with my first (and only) child who is currenlty 8 months old. We started IPT a few days after bringing her home from the hospital, and the book is what taught me and gave me the confidence to try it in the first place. My mom and husband were very supportive of trying out this method, so that was really the key to getting it started. This is a great book for anyone who is interested in learning more about IPT, and it isn't overwhelming because it gives you the basics in a straighforward way.

Great to have just "the basics" without all the other stuff

As a new mom, it was great to have a book that introduced this concept in a really concise way. Extensive background information found in some other books is interesting, but not if you're trying to fit it in during naptime! Since I read this "basics" book, I also read "Diaper Free" by Ingrid Bauer. Despite that fact that I really enjoyed "Diaper Free," I was really glad that I got this Potty Basics book first since it was so concise and told me everything I needed to know to get started.

It really does work! We started when our daughter was 3 months old, and haven't had to change a poopy diaper since. Peeing is another matter, but we're catching about half of them every day. Definitely a technique worth trying--even if you only do it "part time" for the easy catches after naps and such.

A Diamond Second Bester...But By A Micro Eyelash

From my experience, no other book--at this time--can upend Gonzalez-Mena's INFANTS, TODDLERS, AND CAREGIVERS. In it's seventh edition, it stands as the most near perfect infant/toddler textbook ever created.

Now...Berk's book is probably the best "second-best" textbook that I have found.

She goes from history/theory to basic foundations to each era of children from birth to Age 11. The book is filled with color pictures and color charts along with plenty of special interest sidebar accounts on subjects like the negative side of extended infant child care.

So why is it the second best? It just doesn't cover infants and toddlers exclusively. Instead, it exists as a superbly written book on early childhood growth and development...which isn't such a bad thing.

Check it out if you either can't get Gonzalez-Mena's book or if you just want a second opinion on infant/toddler concepts.

This is an excellent book that outlines the infant to caregiver bond in human development. Dr. Stern challenges the traditional developmental sequence and the erroneous views that certain fundamental attachment patterns are confined to infancy alone. This is a great book that understands how scaffolding works in establishing patterns of relationship that can last a lifetime. The fundamental basics that make our human bonds to one another pleasurable and fulfilling are rooted in the establishment of secure attachments, trust and the creation of balance in human giving and receiving. He outlines what can go 'right' and what can go 'wrong' in these early bonds. His focus on loving and attuned presence, reading cues of overstimulation, or understimulation, captures the essence and joy that is both given and received when caretaking is done well or as has been described elsewhere, is 'good enough'. A great read and guide also for parents and clinicians, a great step in helping to build empathy and awareness about this critical period in human development. Highly recommended.

Dr. Stern did an excellent job in describing human development that is empirically based. What has resulted is a questioning of Dr. Margaret Mahler's 1st and 2nd stages of development. Though Dr. Mahler's work is superb, her theory is derived from observation, whereas Dr. Stern utilized computer technology to research similar material consequently presenting a major contribution to the literature. Finally, his writing style is easy to read that all readers can benefit from, especially those who have or work with children. I recommend reading this book.

Claudia, a girl that tries to be perfect, is in love with this band and they are having a concert in their city, but she has school that day. So her friend pressures her into skipping school. I like this book because it shows what teenagers go through. This is a good book for teens from the age of 12-14 or maybe even 15 year olds.

I love this book! Darling illustrations...

I saw this book in the store and just had to have it. Amanda Haley's watercolored ink drawings are just darling! I love her style and the simplicity of this book. The book spans a day in the life of a young child, from getting up in the morning, to going to bed at night. Everything imaginable is in there, and children of a wide age range and ethnic background are included. It's also a diverse book, showing many different types of family arrangements, such as baby sleeping in bed with mommy and daddy, as well as baby waking up in her crib. There also sweet doodles sprinkled through the book ... cute little butterflies, a bright sun, dots and stars, cute little bugs, etc... There are references to baby in day care, as well as to baby at home with mommy, so there's something here for all children to identify with. I think the content is excellent, diverse, and thorough, but the real charm of this book is the author/illustrator's sweet and gentle illustrations. There's a lot to share here with your little one. Use the pictures to make up your own stories as you go along.
