I am a pediatrician and have been in general pediatric practice for over 25 years. In addition, I have four grown children. I highly recommend this book on general baby and child care and problem management. In my early learning years a book like this one would have been helpful to me both as a mother and as a pediatrician.

This compact little book is power packed with informative and easily readable tips for any mother, from the least experienced new mother to the veteran mother of a large brood. There is always something new to learn, and each child brings new and unexpected challenges. Dr. Baskerville's observations, comments and suggestions come from her long experience in interacting with mothers and children of every sort. It is easy to find your way around this book in order to find the answer to a specific question. It is also a comfort to just read straight through it, or through a section of it, for general information. Issues from taking the baby's temperature to how to position the baby for sleeping to problems with discipline are addressed. She also directs the reader to appropriate sources for further help if this is necessary.

In my opinion, this book, Baby Basics, should be a standard on every mother's nursery shelf. It is a ready reference of most of those little unexpected day to day problems, and it is a pleasure to read.

Dr. Baskerville's "Baby Basics" is a common sense approach to caring for babies and toddlers. She answers many questions new parents ask in a way that is easy to understand and to carry out. I am a labor/delivery nurse and am in a position of answering many of these same questions from new parents before I send them home with their babies. I am so happy to have a book like this to refer to and I happily recommend it to my patients. I am buying a copy for each of my own children to use as they become parents for the first time or even if they already have a child. There should be more manuals like this for parents. Thank you Dr. Baskerville.

How children make sense of the world is one of the most compelling questions in the field of psychology, yet since Piaget's downfall it has been difficult to see how an integrative theory on the topic would be possible. By assembling contributions by some of best thinkers in the field, Rakison and Oakes have made a significant contribution to the problem, one that is likely to define the empirical agenda for the next decade. This book should be required reading for all developmental psychologists.

Ever wondered how we know what we know? This book is one of the best collections I have read that addresses this issue. The book was required reading for one of my grad courses in early cognitive development and each week we would read one or two chapters. Although some of the earlier chapters are a bit slow going, I found it overall to be an excellent collection of older research and theories as well as more up to date ideas. It holds together really well and gives you a idea of the bigger picture: what mechanisms are involved in concept learning, when do babies start to learn about objects and things around them, and so on. Every big "name" in the field is included, as well as some more up-and-coming younger folk. There are also some nice debates between the various authors in the book who have radically different views on how babies learn about the world; its clear that some of these researchers don't agree at all! All in all, I recommend this volume to scholars, students, and anyone who is interested in understanding the beginnings of our mental life.

an excellent support for parents

Giving birth to a premature baby is an experience that was often not expected, is overwhelming, and introduces parents to a whole new world of hospitals, procedures, and short and long-term complications for their infant. This journal provides parents with a place to structure all of the complicted and often overwhelming feelings brought up by having a premie baby. It highlights common experiences and provides signficant room for parents to journal in response to pertinent questions. It does a nice job of providing the necessary information and structure to help parents cope with their situation.

A wonderful book in journal form

I purchased this book two years after my premature baby was born. Reading and working through this journal helped my deal with issues relating to my baby's birth and subsequent hospital stay. It is an excellent place to record feelings and emotions that at times are too painful to express in any other way. I highly recommend this book to parents of premature infants.

This book integrates decades of work on the link between attention and temperament by two extraordinary researchers. However, it also goes beyond this by presenting groundbreaking work on how parents and educators can help children improve various aspects of learning. It is written in a highly readable format that makes it a great book for various audiences.

Drs. Posner and Rothbart have provided a timely and comprehensive overview of cognitive neuroscience as it applies to education. Ranging from brain imaging, to modern genetics, to development, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the field, bringing together a masterful summary of these topics in a fully readable and engaging way. This should be read by students in education and both experimental and counseling psychology. These topics are also highly relevant to the field of psychotherapy. A must for any serious student of mental function.

I agree this book is so outstanding that it is a crying shame that it is no longer published. This is a small paperback filled with colorful, amusing, illustrations and loaded with wonderful and easily implemented math/play ideas for the preschool crowd. It is useful for parents who want to explore the world of math together with their child and have one whale of a good time doing it. It is a wonderful resource for preschool teachers and can be easily adapted to Kindergarten and First Grade Math Curriculum. Anyone who is familiar with the work of Jean Piaget will treasure this book.

A crying shame that these are no longer printed!

This whole series is so good! Great illustrations and each page chock full of ideas to teach your child in any setting. I play some of these games with my son while we are driving down the road, in the grocery store, at bathtime, etc. Wonderful and fun ideas for even the busiest parents. These authors really know what works with preschoolers!

This is the best of the best for new and old parents. I didn't read this until my 3rd and still found out all kinds of new things. The book is well thought out and planned. Easy to understand but most of all PRACTICAL. The ideas presented in this book don't require you to have a PH.D to apply. Nor does it require a six digit income to supply the items suggested for use. The women who wrote this book are obviously mothers. Which doesn't seem to be a requirement anymore for giving advice. (ha ha).

found it at a library, now planning on buying it

I got this book a week ago at the local library (an older copy, probably from the first printing) and thought I'd check it out. I figured that if it gave me ANY ideas on stuff to do with my 3 year old, 2 year old, and 2 month old during this rainy weather we are having that it would be a good choice. So I got it home and read through it, and I LOVE this book! I've used several things in it for my 3 year old and my 2 year old, and found that there's a lot of stuff in the 2 sections that line up really well for the different ages. I'm not too creaative when it rains too much so this book has come in very handy, and its given me ideas that I may not have come up with at all if I hadn't checked the book out from the library. After 2 days of referencing this book I told my husband that I was buying it as soon as I could find a copy of it. He agreed with me after looking through it himself. I am very impressed with this book and am suggesting it to everyone I know with little kids, its already becoming a lifesaver and I dread taking it back to the library if I don't have my own copy beforehand.

Evan Early is written by Rebecca Hogue Wojahn and features illustrations from Ned Gannon. An outstanding picturebook for children ages 4 to 8, Even Early is the story of a little girl, Natalie, and the pre-mature birth of her little brother Evan. A charming story of Natalie's patience, Evan Early offers children a remarkable insight and understanding of what being an older sibling really means. A prized addition to any school or community library picturebook collection, Evan Early is especially recommended to the attention of parents anticipating the birth of a little sibling for their older child who will no longer be an only child when their little sibling arrive.

Great book for older siblings of preemies

My 7yo daughter received 3 books about being the sibling of a preemie, and although we enjoyed all three of them, this one was the best of the lot. Not only did it provide good information about the NICU experience, but it was well written and showed some creativity in the presentation that made it less of just a "topic book" and more of a pleasurable reading experience. Whereas the other titles were more sterile in their presentation, this one read more like the sort of good literature we are accustomed to at our house (we have a home library of over 3000 books). I loved the author's use of colors to describe the roller coaster of emotions one has during a NICU experience. She showed a real creativity in language that I found lacking in the other books we have on this subject:

"I stretch my hand out to touch Evan Early's tiny one. His dandelion stem fingers curl around mine."

If you are going to pick only one book for your child about having a preemie sibling, this is the one I would suggest. I liked this one so much that I purchased a second copy for my daughter to give to our NICU for the use of other children like her.

GREAT BOOK!

I can't believe nobody has wrote a review for this book! I first bought The Breastfeeding Book by Martha and William Sears. That book was boring and awful. They are negative people. I had already read The Everything Pregnancy Book and The Everything Baby's First Year Book and LOVED them both so I decided to buy this book. I couldn't put this book down. The information in this book is very helpful and I still look back in it. My baby was in the NICU and her first night she was fed formula in bottles. The second day she was fed my pumped breast milk and formula because my milk was still coming in. She got used to the bottles and made it VERY CLEAR she was not interested in learning how to latch on. I use the nipple shields made by Medela so I can breast feed my baby. Even though I use the shields I still have questions and this book answers them all! You WON'T regret buying this book!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

This book is wonderful. Being the oldest of nine breastfed kids, I've been around breastfeeding all of my life and thought I knew everything. Little did I know once I had my own daughter and started breastfeeding. I've learned so many interesting things and gone, "Oh, so that's why this is happening" while reading this book! It is very easy to read, has instructions from a lactation expert and gives examples of positions, milk storage, how to treat sore nipples, etc. Really, everything you need to know about breastfeeding is included.

It's a must have for any mom who plans or is breastfeeding her children. It's comforting too as you find out that you're no the only experiencing things and the book explains why it's happening. I've already loaned out my copy to a friend and will start giving this out to any friends at baby showers. It's just that good!

Fairy Kisses and Stork Bites is such an original, beautiful book! What the description doesn't tell you is that it's full of illustrations that are really unique. The author creates thousands of little hand-drawn dots that look almost like black and white photographs, but better. And the facts are funny and fun. We bought 10 copies as gifts for our various pregnant friends and new parents.
