My five-year old daughter found this adorable little book recently and we bought it for her to give to an aunt at an upcoming baby shower. It is chock-full of quotations from folks both famous and not so famous, and the reactions any parent will have will range from outright laughter to puddling up. I don't know how author Janet Lanese rounded up all this good stuff, but she did a super job. A sampling:

"The family you come from isn't as important as the family you're going to have."

- RING LARDNER

"To my embarrassment, I was born in bed with a lady."
- WILSON MIZNER

"When I was born, I was so surprised I couldn't talk for a year and a half."
- GRACIE ALLEN

"One trouble in raising a boy is that father always expects son to do exactly as much work as he never did."
- ANONYMOUS

"When we look at actual children, no matter how they are raised, we notice immediately that little girls are in fact smaller versions of real human beings, whereas little boys are Pod People from the Planet Destructo."
- DAVE BARRY

"I just can't get over how much babies cry. I really had no idea what I was getting into. To tell you the truth, I thought it would be more like getting a cat."
- ANNE LAMOTT

You get the idea. Not only is the text eminently readable, but the design is attractive and enhances the quotations. Old-fashioned line drawings and silhouettes abound. All in all, this is a wonderful, wonderful book and just perfect for a niece to give her aunt for the aunt's baby shower--or for anyone to give to anyone who has children either old or young.

This lady knows how to capture the essence of how a baby affects the lives of all those they touch, whether they be blood-related or by choice. She has the knack to not only interview the world of babies, but how to relate all the gamut of feelings that babies bring to our lives. It brought back memories to me of when I was a new mother at age 19 and how prescious was by baby to me, and what did he think about the world he came tumbling into, and this young lady who thought she knew how to handle it all! Good lessons and insight, reviewed and remembered, all which can still be revisited with every new baby I hold and cuddle, even my own! AND, how much love and knowledge, patience and endurance our babies pass on to us!

How do people all over the world bathe their babies, or carry them, or swaddle them? This book will show you. Beautiful pictures for cultures all across the world! Babies, babies and more babies being swaddled, carried in slings, and just generally loved by their parents and families.

The photography is stunning and the perspective it gives you is wonderful!

A fantastic book for new or expecting moms, especially those expecting their first baby (they're always fascinated by baby pictures and stories)!

This book really is an eye opener to learning about birth and rituals around the world. Even if not a word had been written, the page after page, beautiful pictures of families and babies are just wonderful. It takes us out the "the norm" we are used to with our own culture, and into many other ways of life. It reminds us of the big world we live in, we all do things a little different, yet we are all sharing a common bond, humanity. This book is highly recommended for excellant photography and is an excellant teaching guide for all.

I value this book, not as a treatise on child care around the world, but for the exquisite photography of babies, beautifully adorned by their loving families. The text is interesting, but bare-bones support for the amazing images of infants and children from around the world. Babies from Mongolia, Tibet, China, Australia, the Arctic circle etc. are featured, being held, carried, rocked, bathed and nursed. Their faces are hauntingly beautiful. So are their clothing and toys. Such exotic accoutrements as strips of fur, twisted grass, glass and amber beads, feathers, leather and cloth are featured. This book provides aesthetic inspiration and a visual feast for the artist in me, as well as emotional connection with the endearing subjects!

I'm happy that the this delightful book has been republished as a Kindle book. The original paperback was so much fun to read, and so funny, too. The authors capture the essence of "baby-English," and show readers how and infant's formative language become real words. If you're a parent of grown children, this book will bring back wonderful memories of when your child was learning to speak. If you're a new parent, Baby-English will help you better understand what your child is trying to tell you. This book is a must for every parent's bookshelf.

This book is filled with gems such as "buk-buk" (read to me) or "heidi," (play hide and seek with me or I'm hiding.) And the part of the book that translates from adult-speak to what infants understand is brilliant. "We're home," for instance, means "Mommy and Daddy have rematerialized. " "This is not a toy" means to a small child, "they're taking away my toy." This is an excellent present for a new parent or a veteran.

A wonderful and witty book by esteemed children's author Bill Adler, Jr., the "Baby-English" book provides parents of young ones a snicker, chuckle and occasional true belly laugh. Adler's book compares common baby phrases to the actual meaning, giving us a laugh along with the realization that some phrasing in babies is common no matter what. Truly an enjoyable book, this is short, easy to read and has hysterical little cartoon illustrations by Bonnie Timmons.

This was the first personal item I ran out to buy when we learned our second child was on the way. Our firstborn has the earlier design, with the vintage shoes, and I love it. The look, feel of the paper, and the vintage design help capture the timeless aura of the early days more than a commercially-styled book that will date itself in five years. Ms. Schenck lets her artistry shine in these beautiful memory books.

We received an earlier addition of this book for our son before he was born. It is one of the best baby books that we have seen. It allowed us to journal and to document things about the pregnancy, ultrasound, first holidays, growing chart, firsts and express our thoughts on what he would be like. It was nice to be able to have specific pages to document his life even before he was born. Most baby books start at birth, this one starts at conception.

I love this baby book!

Award-winning author Joann Hakala presents A Baby Brother! Oh No! is a charming softcover picturebook about two young sisters adjusting to their growing family. When their mother tells them she's going to have a baby, both of them hope for a baby sister - everyone knows that baby brothers are big trouble! But their mother comes home from the hospital with a little baby brother instead. Oh no! Gradually, the sisters learn that caring for, playing with, and teaching a baby brother can be fun after all. A heartwarming picturebook, with simple but gregariously colorful illustrations, especially recommended for reading aloud and sharing with young children anticipating a brand new sibling.

This is an excellent book. It deserves to be read over once then go through the book to list the ideas that will be used. It makes the most common household item seem interesting. It is of course to a budding brain who wishes to explore. The ideas in the book are not new but put together and organized so nicely it makes for a good reference book. I love it and all the baby eistein products.

Gifts from "Grandmother" to adult children or young friends who are expecting a baby has its challenges. I want to avoid being philosophical or imposing or to tread on sensitive toes at such an important time. Of course, the stores are full of 'things' to get, but Grandmothers like me enjoy giving a meaningful (not to mention useful) gift

Well, I have found the perfect book for any and all new parents! I will buy it again and again this year because so many babies of friends and neighbors are due. I'll buy it for shower gifts and for new baby gifts.

Amanda Dobbins has written a book that helps parents organize a "whole new world". She offers both personal and expert views on many of the issues that surround the myriad decisions new parents have to make. She writes about unfamiliar responsibilities with reassurance in a matter-of-fact way. When a new parent finishes a topic, he or she is fortified and ready to proceed with the task. Even more importantly,The Baby File is wonderful to look at and a joy to use. There is space for "making the book your own". For many new parents, it will become a keepsake of fond memories of a wonderful time of life.

The Baby File is full of instructive information, it supports parents when they really need it, and it reinforces memories. It is a great gift to give (or to get for yourself, if 'Grandmother' doesn't get it for you!)

This is THE book to buy for new/expecting parents

I bought this book for a friend's baby shower, but read it cover-to-cover first. The Baby File provides exactly what it purports and more: A single volume in which you can find and store all the practical info you need from pregnancy through early childhood. There's nothing else like this out there. It's really helpful and downright smart. And what's "more?" Its combination of anecdotal and factual information is actually an engaging read. Amanda Dobbins writes with a reverence for motherhood firmly rooted in reality and experience, and there is no gimmick about it -- she has earnestly done all the research and organizing so other new moms don't have to.

A definite must-have for any new mom!

Something about the babies in THIS BOOK really just clicks with her. We have read it over, and over, and over again. BTW I started reading this book with my baby when she was about 6 months old and she is now 11 months old. :)

This is one of the few resources that equip new parents with a "lesson plan" for interacting in positive, productive, and, most importantly, fun ways. Not all of us, after all, can recall the nursery rhymes, songs, and games we played as an infant! This resource helps bring back the once familiar and introduces new ones as well. In an age that pushes us to produce independent little "baby einsteins," it is refreshing to have the voice of a respected pediatrician call us to action for just plain fun time, interacting one-on-one with our instinctively interdependent, social babies.

Highly recommended all-in-one play pack.

What an excellent idea! This pack contains all the essential items and topics required for the growth and development of your young baby. It is especially suitable for first - time parents who are bombarded with so much information on how to ensure the stimulation and development of their baby and dont know where to start. I found it very simple to use and also quite exciting and could not wait to introduce a new topic, excercise or toy. My husband was thrilled with this find of ours and he really enjoyed being able to contribute to our son's learning experience through stimulation and play.

The crucial first year! Toys, Games and activities...

When you shake this "book style" play pack, you can hear the musical rattle inside. The rattle helps a baby to acquire a mature grip which later will help in writing. In fact, this "book" opens up to reveal a number of fun activities for you and your baby. The three foam toys are covered in various materials. The surface, color, shape and sound of each block will fascinate and amuse. The Music tape (Mozart Beethoven, Handel, Vivaldi and Bach) will help to stimulate the part of your baby's brain that is responsible for math, logic, concentration and speech.

There is a cute wall banner which will help your newborn baby to stimulate recognition and memory. It is not something your child could play with as it is just made out of paper and could easily tear. It is just a very small item and could be put up on the wall so you could point to images of a cat or pig and say the sound each animal makes. The mobile is easy to assemble and must also be kept out of the babies reach. If placed 8-10 inches above the crib, it will help to stimulate vision from birth.

I turned over a smiley face on a piece of cardboard and found myself, well..looking at me :). It is a mirror you can hold above our baby's face so she can study her reflection and begin to develop a sense of self. Because various types of play will encourage your child to develop in different ways, there is a set of "48 game cards." Each card encourages all aspects of a baby's development. Every card shows a fun activity. Fun and familiar rhymes like "This little Piggy" are fun and help a child to be more aware of their feet.

The included "Baby's Skill Book" is just wonderful as it presents hundreds of easy ways to encourage your baby's month-by-month progress throughout the first year. A "golden hour" time clock shows the games and activities that will be particularly good at various stages of development. During the wakeful times, you can help to promote his innate desires to communicate and play.

All I have to say is..."How did parents survive without all this information in the past?" Dr. Miriam sure has it all organized for the new mom and dad.
