We found this book in the library right before our second child was born. It was perfect to introduce our daughter positively to having a second little one in the family. But we loved the book for itself as well. The illustrations are adorable, they endorse the text perfectly. The book is great for animated reading and when we get to the page where "it is quacking time" we all quack like crazy. Wonderful!

This is a great book for any child expecting a sibling. My son loved (and still loves) reading this book before we had our second child. Now, we give it as a gift for families with a new baby coming. Also, the pages are nice and thick for a non-board book, making them less easy for little hands to tear.

Jill Barton's zany and comical story, It's Quacking Time!, tells of a young duck who sees his mother lay an egg and discovers the magic of egg origins. Everyone who views the egg receives a lesson in life in Waddell's funny tale of a young duck's discoveries.

This book is a great introduction to talk about a new addition to your family. My daughter and I read this book constantly while I was pregnant. Even though ducks come from eggs, Ducklings questions and statements very much resemble things my daughter said about my pregnancy. The drawings are cute and the story is easy for even a 2 year old to follow.

Kiddy chronicles is a 10! It is the only book of its kind which enables you to document your child's precious milestones in a practical, logical and fun fashion! The graphics are adorable and it is the kind of book your child will love to look at when he/she is older. Since the documentation is so easy and convenient, I find I am excited to enter each milestone as it occurs. And my son will be so appreciative that I took the time to do so (which takes no time at all)! What a fabulous concept and a keepsake to be cherished for a lifetime! Kudos to this author for publishing such an inspirational method of chronicling a child's development! Signed, Betty.

Thoughtful, warm, humerous, poignant book of photographs and quotes from children as they view our world through their eyes. Short and well composed by the authors. Delightful pictorals of children that capture the wonder of youth. An excellent reminder of whats most important and who we are. Dr. Freeds reminiscences at the end are deeply moving, memorable narratives of the childhood experience. MOC tells us how perceptive and precious our children are.

These tapes are extremely informative. I learned more each time I listened to them, which was easy because they're actually quite fun. They also make great baby gifts for all my "mommy" friends. One drawback is that they don't appear to be available in CD. Many of my friends only have CD players especially in the car. If they are available on CD please let me know. Thank you so much. These tapes are amazing helpers to all parents. They encourage both mother and father to understand their baby's needs and wants from an early stage. The values taught to parents in these tapes help children to grow up with a strong sense of values. I would recommend them to all my friends and relatives with children.

The Character Connection tapes reflect the best of what clinical wisdom and behavioral science have to offer on rearing healthy children and youth. Inherent in this approach is the recognition that relationship rather than manipulative tactics and stratetgies is the key to successful parenting. The conversational format complements the message by being interactive rather than dydactic. Principles of successful parenting emerge through discussion of concrete, real-life questions and situations. I recommend Character Connection to both prospective and current prents as a guide to the most important endeavor adult life has to offer.

This set of tapes (there is one for younger children and one for older children and teens) does a great job of laying out some of the things parents can do to help their child's social and emotional development. Parents of all kinds will find valuable tips and concepts here. Best of all, the format is very entertaining -- listen to it on your way home from work and you'll be set to give your child the gift of positive nurturing parenting by the time you arrive home.

This book is just fabulous. It's warm and funny. The characters are lovable. Ms. MacLean makes you want to jump right into the story and move into Mary Margaret's neighborhood. Though Mary Margaret's family is a little bit quirky, I don't know anyone that could not relate to them and their experiences in some way. My young nieces don't know it yet, but they can plan on getting this book in their Christmas stockings!

My daughter loved this book!!!! This book is refreshing in that it speaks to young girls and still stays innocent. Mary Margaret is so lovable and the characters are so real. There are so few titles out there that emerging readers can read and not have to deal with issues that they are too young for. The website www.christinekolemaclean.com has great features for teachers, parents, and kids. Don't miss out.

I love the relationships: Mary Margaret's relationship with her mom, with her dad, with her brother JT, with her friend Andy, and with her grandparents. All the relationships are depicted with great warmth and sensitivity, and Mary Margaret is very real and very lovable. Our grandkids loved the story and they were both trying to come up with possible animals for Mary Margaret as we read the story together. They seemed quite satisfied with the ending and now want to read more books about Mary Margaret.

My daughter and I read this book. It was very fun and entertaining. Not boring at all. The relationships in the book are very real. There are a few good lessons to be learned like standing up for what is right and helping others in their time of need. My daughter is in elementary school, and she really enjoyed the book. I would definitely recommend this book, especially to those who really want a pet!

The alliteration in this book is captivating. It's a beautiful and soothing read and always ends with a warm hug with our children. It is a great nighttime book before bed. My 2 year old and 5 year old love it. We keep a stack at home as it has become our standard gift to newborns and up to age two. We also live in San Francisco, which makes it all the more fun to read and gift!

My husband bought this book for me because we're adopting a baby soon. We love that it incorporates both human and animal parent and baby relationships through a visit to the zoo. It's mostly mother-focused, but the father does make a nice appearance at the end. We also appreciated the ethnic diversity in the book, especially since the child we're adopting will be darker-skinned than we are. Overall a lovely little book!

Hands down the best "new baby" book for kids I have ever seen. The story is told from the point of view of the new brother who is loving and protective of the new baby and postpartum mama. He stands ready and willing to help, although he finds that mostly baby and mama are sleeping a lot. Such a loving book. And so refreshing in the way that there is no underlying anger/unhappiness about the new arrival. Also unusual is the inclusion of mama's needs in the postpartum days and the support of neighbors and friends reaching out to the brother. Very breastfeeding friendly. Found this one at the library and am ordering my own copy right away.

Wish it was still in print!!!

This was the first book I remember reading by myself. I remember when my father use to take my siblings and I to the library and time after time I would pick up this book. Growing up in the eighties, there were not many children books that had African Americans as main characters. Therefore, this book facinated me as a six year-old child. The message of the importance of family and love, in this book, still remains with me at the age of twenty-one. From the beautiful illustrations to the love between mother and son, this will always be my number one book. And I know in the future I will encourage my children to read this wonderful book!

This book is well-organized and has tons of questions about the field of maternal-newborn nursing. My only problem (which obviously it's huge, as I still give this book 5 stars) is that the answers and their rationales are all at the END of each chapter, instead of on the same page a sthe question. It still is a wonderful study material to help you pass your class.

Wonderful tale of a positive sibling relationship
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-07
Oonga Boonga is a great example of a positive sibling relationship. My sister and Mom picked this up at the library for my nephews.

This is a great book for a parent to read to an older sibling, because it helps to foster a positive relationship between siblings. Baby Louise is crying and no one is able to calm her down until her older brother Daniel whispers "Oonga Boonga" to her. Then, she just has the biggest toothless grin.

When Daniel goes outside to play, she starts crying again. Even though the parents and grandparents are saying Oonga Boonga to her, nothing seems to stop her crying. Daniel arrives back on the scene and whispers a new phrase and Louise stops crying.

Oonga Boonga has colorful illustrations that are wonderfully drawn. The writing is simple and direct so that a child can easily understand what is going on. I would recommend this book to parents who have more than one child to show the positive healthy aspects of having a sibling.

This book is simply great.

Baby Louis is quite a crier. Nothing her mom, dad, and grandparents do helps. Then Daniel comes home from school and whispers the magic words into her ear. She immediately stops crying and begins to smile. Everyone is relieved, until Daniel goes out to play and the crying starts again. Find out what Daniel does this time to stop his little sister from crying.

My 14 month old son loves the sign language books I've given him. He likes the brightly colored pictures in this book and the close up pictures of children's faces. This book contains signs for words such as big/little, sad/happy, and wet/dry. The words in this book seem fit for a little older toddler to me, but he does really seem to like looking at the pictures. The black and white illustrations of how to do the signs are easy to understand. The book is also a nice size for little toddler hands. A big thumbs up here!

This has lovely pictures and drawings of signs, but they are British Sign Language signs, not American Sign Language Signs! This book and the others by this author, are published in Great Britian. I wondered why so many of the signs were "wrong" until I discovered the books origin!

Contrary to the widespread myth, sign languages are not universal. If you are looking to learn and use the sign language that is used in the United States, these aren't the books for you.....

The book does indeed use ASL signs

..The line drawings are not the best...but it is a nice way to read and sign with your child, even children under the age of 2. Giving children, even babies, the means to communicate thoughts, ideas, or wants is such a gift, why hold them back because WE think we know what they can and cannot do. The reality is, when it comes to language learning, children have the upper hand on us adults. That said, I do feel the book is small, but the drawings are actually larger than some of the ones in Slier's books, which also have signs. Both author's books require that you do a little "deciphering" of the pictures, but these are still some of the only books that have the sign pictures right in there. Happy reading!

Both my boys LOVE this book

Each night this book gets read. We were told that our 2 year old is profoundly deaf when he was 4 weeks. Although this was completely WRONG, he isn't even hearing impaired, he does have a speech disability, so we have used sign with him since he was an infant. Our 4 year old loves to sit down with "his baby" and go through the signs and pictures. It is a sturdy book and presents words that kids can relate to. Great pictures and sign illustrations.
