This book brought me tears of sorrow and tears of joy. Sorrow for the pain I felt for my closest friend and for the author. My close friend recently lost her 4 day old son in similar circumstances. I bought this book as a gift for my friend and read it myself. I'm glad I did as this book gave me a better understanding of her pain. The joy came from the faith messages in this book which confirmed my Faith in God and the bigger picture of life itself. I highly recommend this book to anyone, not just those who believe in God. The saddest part is that this book is not being published anymore, I was fortunate to find it online through a private seller. A book worth searching for! Thank you Jan Wolfe Rosales for sharing your story, for giving me tears of sorrow and joy!

Chosen as an, "Editor's Choice" in the September 10, 2000 Chicago Tribune. Rosales' book is part catharsis and part journal, but it's mostly a guide for other parents facing a similar tragedy. Rosales explains how to find comfort in religion and family, and what a person can do to cope with and try to understand the loss of a child.

This was a beautifully written book that will completely touch your soul. I lost my firstborn son and this was a book I could defintely relate to! The author talks about her struggles with her faith in God and then shares how she surrendered all to the Lord and how her healing began. This is a definite must read for all those who have lost a baby. We all share the same heartache and this book speaks right to your soul.

Recommended reading for anyone suffering loss of a child..

Author Jan Rosales lost her firstborn child when he was just four days old. Baby Joe died in his mother's arms in the backseat of an automobile on an Iowa Turnpike, on their way home from the hospital where the best university doctors couldn't undo his fatal heart defect. Joe's young parents were devastated, bereaved, and very angry with God. Given In Love, But Not Mine To Keep is a candid, intimate revelation about loss and repair, about finding a source of strength beyond imagination. It is an exceptional powerful testimony of faith, a tribute to a son who was given everything but length of days, and a testament to the faith that guided a young woman through her valley of the shadow of death. Given In Love, But Not Mine To Keep is highly recommended, redeeming reading for anyone who has ever suffered the loss of a child.

I bought this book for my sister who just had a baby. After reading through it, I am green with envy that she will have access to all the useful and practical information in this book! I had to learn so much through trial and error (the emphasis on error). I would have saved myself so much time and energy had I had a book like this one! Do you know how long it took me to figure out how to go out of the house with my baby and how much time I spent feeling guilty for not feeling totally, unconditionally fullfilled by motherhood?

I will buy this book for everyone I know who is having a baby!!

This wonderful resource recently received a Gold Parenting Resource Award from the National Parenting Publications Award (NAPPA). Susan K. Written specifically for expectant and new moms, Sheryl Gurrentz presents a superb and infinitely practical compendium of advice, tips, and techniques to care of the new baby and themselves. Especially recommended for women who seek to combine child care with career employment, Gurrentz demystifies early motherhood by covering a diversity of relevant subjects such as how much the body hurts even weeks after giving birth; what to do when feeling jealous that your partner goes to work while you are preempted by child care responsibilities for a new born; how to get a spouse to act like a parent and not just an assistant helper; how to protect modesty while publicly breast feeding; and what to do when life with a new baby doesn't turn out quite like you thought it would! Highly recommended reading, The Guilt-Free Guide To Your New Life As A Mom is an invaluable preparation while waiting for baby's arrival, and even more welcome when trying to adjust to baby after she or he has arrived to enliven, enhance, bewilder, and change your life!!

"We are the first generation of mothers to want the best of both worlds, whether or not we work. We want to be able to take care of our own needs and pursue our personal interests in a wide variety of activities inside and outside the home - while we're being great moms." ~Sheryl Gurrentz

While many books on motherhood focus on what you "should do," this book focuses more on how to make becoming a mother an enjoyable experience for YOU.

Is this possible? Can you really make time for yourself and feel guilt-free?

Sheryl Gurrentz has helped thousands of parents redefine their goals. She believes you can have it all. As a trained ?doula,? she has experience couching women before, during and after childbirth. She wants you to know what it will feel like to be a mom and how you can feel good.

She also shows you how to choose baby products, create harmony in your life, make time for yourself, get things done, balance responsibilities and make wise career choices.

The Contents Include:

Adjusting to Motherhood - feelings
Creating Life Balance - time for you, time for baby
Dealing with Physical Changes - what will your body feel like?
Enjoying Nursing - to nurse or bottle-feed, that is the question.
Choosing the right baby products - deciding what you need and how to select items
Managing Family Dynamics - You, Your Partner, the new baby, other children, grandparents.
Making Career-Oriented Transitions - Getting what you need from working, returning to work and becoming a professional mom.
Creating a Safe Home Environment - general baby proofing and safety
Going Out with Your Baby - daily trips and eating out
Traveling with your Baby - planning what to bring and adapting to places you are staying
Finding Baby-Sitters
Finding Child Care

The author encourages you to look at your positive and negative feelings. She suggests making time for a massage or getting a facial to make yourself feel great. Just because you are pregnant, doesn?t mean you can't spoil yourself.

Throughout the book she talks about:

Dealing with Physical changes.
What the difference will be between various forms of childbirth.
How to prepare yourself for nursing. I had no idea there were breast shields.
There is information in this book, I have never read anywhere else.

The "Deciding What You Need" section is extremely good. Sheryl also explains how various items are more practical than others. This will save you money!

Would make a great baby shower gift.

A Unique resource for every mom or woman considering being a mom. 20 Stars for originality!

A look of skepticism crossed my face as a friend handed me this book to read. Being a new, sleep-deprived, working mom, the last thing I thought I could find was time for a little quiet reading, but once I started flipping the pages I was hooked. Sheryl Gurrentz brings her own wisdom as a mother to a fresh new look on parenthood. She uses a mix of humor and real-life testimonials that not only provide good information but priceless wisdom and advice for surviving the many adventures of motherhood. The book talks about everything from dealing with the physical changes after childbirth to evaluating your career and life balance. It is packed with important advice including a resource guide in the back of the book containing contact information for manufactures, organizations and associations that you may need during that first year of motherhood. This book would help any new mom get through the twists and turns ahead. It is a book that new moms will use and treasure.

I asked my partner to compare all the pregnancy books that I found in Kinokuniya bookstore. I am glad he choose this book, since it covers from pregnancy till 36 months. I did compare it with Dr Miriam Stoppard's books, and find this book is way much better for its illustration and explanation. It give step by step guidance through pregnancy that you want to know and even the basic knowledge such as breast feeding babies and changing nappies (with illustrations, of course!)

I purchased the Mother of All Pregnancy Books and the Mother of All Baby Books for the birth of my first child. I highly recommend these books. The information on practices in Canada sets them apart from other books and made my purchasing decision easy.

I have spent hours reading and re-reading these books (when you're sleep deprived it takes a while to absorb information!). The information is current and the inclusion of comments and advice from other mothers gives it credibility. The writing style flows nicely and I appreciated the touch of humour (yes there's a "u" in humour in Canada) found throughout.

Definitely buy these books if you live in Canada and are expecting a baby. You won't regret the investment.

I bought The Mother of All Baby Books before our son was born, and found it helpful from the start. After our son arrived, I found myself checking in with Ann whenever I had questions about his health, or even my own recovery. Extremely reassuring was Douglas' more laid back approach to child development in the first year than that of the What To Expect.. series (e.g. when your child has not sat up on his or her own by 5 months, you do not need to rush to the doctor..). I highly recommend this book whether you're expecting or have just begun your journey as a parent.

This book is the only baby book you'll need to buy. It is so in depth and easy to understand. It has a lot of tables and "checklists" that are very interesting. I bought this book after I bought The Mother of All Pregnancy Books, which was awesome too. I like it so much better than the 'What to Expect' series because you can read this book straight through. After finishing this book, I wanted to buy The Mother of All Toddler Books...which is only available in the Canadian edition so far. But I think it will be available in the US soon. Do yourself a favor and buy it now!

I enjoyed reading this book, it's so easy to read and easy to understand. I found that the book talked about things other books don't even mention. And I love that it's contents are targeted to the Canadian reader. The only flaw I find is that she doesn't have solutions to solving some first year baby situations but all in all, it was worth the money.

Lisa Braner has written a wonderful book that touches a deep part within all of us, whether we are a new mother or a grandparent. The wisdom contained in this small book, found on almost every page, is so universal that no one can read it and not be richer for having done so.

Her words flow effortlessly, teaching all of us that the best parts of life come in those small moments we can't plan for no matter how organized we think we are. Learning to treasure the unexpected joys that our children bring reflects a larger truth that runs its course throughout our lives.

Instead of mourning the days that are gone or anticipating the days that are yet to be, Lisa Braner gently reminds us that we have to steady our focus in the here and now because that's the only time we really have. Whether those treasured moments rest in the love light of a child's eyes or in the quiet of a garden after a soaking rain, the larger truth of her message is that we must ensure our lives maintain Balance because, as she so eloquently writes, "our most treasured memories usually hang on the edge of mere moments."

Bran for the Soul

Review Date: 2004-07-27
Lisa Braner provides for her readers a nourishing, cleansing and nurturing book of wisdom, broken down into manageable, bite-size pieces. Her 52 bits of sage advice take the new mother through the phases of motherhood from newborn to toddler. Even the cover evokes images of comfort: three little ducks in a sudsy bath; a baby's foot in a mother's hand; and cozy slippers resting delicately in a basket.

Braner's honest examination of motherhood left me, a two-time mother, feeling understood and, quite frankly, loved! Her thoughtful essays interweave the right amount of personal stories to give the reader the feeling that Braner has been there, too. I will never look at my "skinny jeans" in the same way; nor will I engage in negative self-talk, which so many mothers do. Her book made me want to kick back, take a guilt-free bath, and enjoy my kids as their childhoods enfold before me. Thank you, Ms. Braner, for your contribution to mothers' wellness!

Very inspirational! Perfect for new mothers!

The joy of new motherhood is often overshadowed by the need for rest, relaxation and the search for a little private time. Ah, I remember those days as though they were yesterday.

In "The Mother's Book of Well-Being," by Lisa Groen Braner, new mothers will find 52 weeks of inspirational passages, self-giving ideas and suggestions for enriching their role as a mother. Children will benefit not only from the love you give to them, but also from the love you give to yourself.

MyParenTime.com highly recommends this book - mothers will find a wealth of support and helpful suggestions on how to enrich their lives, thus enriching the lives of their children. The short passages allow just enough time for quick reads throughout the day. It's small size is perfect for carrying in your purse or a diaper bag :). New mothers, who often forget to care for themselves, will learn how to stay on the path to well-being.

I've already given this book as a gift to numerous "in a family way" friends, and each has come back with grateful rave reviews.

With chapters addressing areas of pivotal importance and challenge in child-raising, "Mothers Know Best" isn't a "fluffy" parenting book destined to sit on the shelf...this one WILL be referenced over and over again.

Mothers Know Best is an anthology of 1,001 tips, trips, techniques, and advice tidbits concerning pregnancy, childbirth and the first year of raising a baby, all from mothers, to mothers around the world. Written in the spirit of sisterhood, Mothers Know Best offers wisdom on everything from raging emotions during pregnancy (depression is a serious concern and should not be taken lightly; meanwhile, volatile expectant mothers can help themselves feel better protect family and friends from devastating outbursts by recording rants and tirades in a journal) to the value of prenatal classes (all the reading in the world does not prepare the first-time mother or her loved one for actual childbirth) to dining out with a baby (feed the child beforehand so he/she does not become unduly hungry smelling the restaurant food) and much, much more. An extremely valuable supplementary resource for new and experienced parents alike.

Mr. Rogers creates a great book for young children who've recently become big sisters or brothers. There is a fair representation of some of the things big siblings might be feeling especially about sharing their parents. The color photos are good, but the clothing everyone wears is dated, fortunately little ones don't mind when you read it with them. This is a really good book for new big siblings.

The New Baby is a book that discusses the feelings that older siblings can have toward a new baby. In the typically simple, direct style that Mr. Rogers uses on Mister Roger's Neighborhood, Fred Rogers helps a child understand that both the baby and he/she are special. He also offers the assurance that parents have enough love for every child in the family.

The book has warm photographs of family members interacting with babies. These are useful in discussing what it will be like to have a baby in the house. I think this is an excellent book to read with children who are soon-to-be brothers or sisters.

I bought this book while expecting our daughter, who we know faces a long stay in the NICU. This book has been an excellent primer - the text is well written and detailed enough even for a mom with a background in science and medicine. The pictures and especially the diagrams are great too! I sent this book to a friend who had her baby at 24 weeks. Needless to say, she loves it, she could not put it down that first night and is recommending it to their support group at the hospital. Families that experience parenthood in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) experience a very different beginning. They often feel intense powerlessness and a lack of control. Many families will share that "it doesn't really feel like this is my baby."

This book, written by a knowledgeable and sensitive NICU nurse and her colleagues,, will help parents the journey through newborn intensive care. The book is extremely detailed and exquisitely accurate, yet easy to read. It contains a wealth of information to arm parents with the information they need to ask questions, to question answers, and to work with the health care team as a true partner in their infant's recovery.

The book is written by a group of seasoned NICU nurses who convey a sensitivity and empathy that reaches out from the pages at every turn.

As a professional advanced practice nurse, who has worked in the NICU for 20 years, I am delighted to share this resources with parents and grandparents at every turn.

Parent's are not and should not be visitors in their children's lives. Knowledge is power and this book will give you the confidence to become your babies BEST advocate.

It also helped explain some of what to expect in terms of potential problems, procedures, feelings, and just getting to know the NICU environment. This experience would have been much more difficult without this excellent reference guide.

Calming and Brilliant. This book saved my sanity!

This book shows the caring yet realistic way through the NICU. I ordered this book while in the hospital three weeks prior to my son's early arrival. It made more sense in the NICU, showed me what to exepct and gave me more knowledge to adequately approach my son's medical team without feeling helpless, stupid and uninformed. Being a more well-informed parents allowed us to make correct decisions and allowed us to "TRY" and worry less. This book even had experimental research in it, with which our son would not have survived. I was told of an experimental protocal our son was a candidate for and the NICU book had information on it! Technical and medical information was presented in a concise and thoughtful manner.

I first heard a part of this story from my Mother when I was young. I found it again later in life, read the whole story, and fell in love with Blaine's story all over again.

Miracles are all around us if we just open our eyes and SEE all that God has revealed to make man's life better!

One Tattered angel is a very great witness that miracles do happen and God is the God of all..... even the little ones.

This awesomely well-written little book is one of the most inspiring and humbling books I have read in a long time. I have given several as gifts and will give more. My sister's comments were that it "should be required reading for everyone." That pretty well sums it up. Highly recommended.

A must read for anyone and everyone!

This book is truly touching. I finished reading it today for the 10th time within the year I have gotten it I believe. It is a true story of how even though times get rough, our Lord Jesus is always by us and so are his tattered angels.

amazing and thought provoking

i was on the island of st. martin recently, staying at a small hotel on the beach; to pass some time, i'd noticed they had "used" books on the shelf in the lobby to borrow and saw this little book called "one tattered angel". i started reading it and couldn't put it down. it affected the rest of my trip & my outlook on things, especially the power of prayer. i wanted to take the book with me - i was going to ask the hotel if i could buy it, just in case i couldn't find it anywhere. however, i noticed that it was signed by the author! i realized that the book needed to be left right there, so someone else could have the pleasure of reading it, like i did.

This book touched and inspired me so much that we named our daughter Charity after the subject of this book. This book helps us to better understand what our Heavenly Father expects of us, how very much he loves us and how he compensates for the weaknesses we have been given. There are blessings, even in the toughest of trials. Don't hesitate to buy this book. It may (and should) change your life.

I like the concept of this product and all of the accessories that came with it although I have not had any success yet (only been using it about a week with my 15 month son). This program can work with your child even if they are older than 2 and it's not impairative that they know any other signs.

WOW! BUY THIS KIT!

I went through a real potty training nightmare with my daughter who was over 4 before she was finally out of diapers. For months and months she would say "I do it tomorrow" and get upset if I tried to sit her on the potty. It didn't matter what we promised her. When my son came along, I vowed to do something different. That's what motivated us to give the Baby Signs potty program a try. It's been amazing!! The Baby Signs Program has him already using the potty regularly to pee and he's only 17 months old! We're working on poop now! Baby Signs is right--it's much easier to train them when their little. I can't recommend the kit highly enough!"

When I first heard about the Baby Signs Potty kit I was pretty skeptical about starting training so young. All the families we knew were waiting until 2 1/2 or even 3. But, as a Sierra Club member, I've always felt guilty about disposable diapers because they end up in landfills. So, my wife and I decided we'd try the Baby Signs program with our 15-month-old daughter. And we're so glad we did. It really worked. She's 17-month-old now and only has an occasional accident. She still loves watching the DVD and now our whole family sings the potty song. Thanks Baby Signs!

Another sensible way to be green!

Be kind to mother nature - being potty trained earlier saves many paper diapers from going into the landfill (not to mention the water that is used to produce those diapers) and also saves water if you use cloth diapers.

For a first-time parent, potty training seems a daunting task but since our daughter was trained by 30 months, I was already open to the idea of earlier potty training. Ideally I would have liked to never have had our son in diapers in the first place, going the Elimination Communication route, but that does not fit our lifestyle so this is the next best thing. Ask anyone who remembers the days before paper (disposable) diapers were around - not all that long ago! - and they'll tell you how kids were trained earlier than they are nowadays.

There are many books about potty training but this stands out as it is a very comprehensive kit, comprising of a parent guide, a DVD to enjoy together with songs and signs, a train whistle (either to alert your child when it's time to go or letting them blow on it themselves to help nature along, or to celebrate a success), stickers, and a lift-the-flap board book also showing the signs.

Any why before the age of 2? These days, children are being potty trained later and later, meaning more profits for the paper diaper industry. By 18 months, it is generally agreed, a child can be physiologically ready, but s/he is still very open to new routines. Why not take advantage, before the "terrible two's" set in!

We already were signing with our son so it was not a big jump to add this to our routine. He loves the Diaper Doodles(tm) - the animated babies on the "Potty Train" DVD included in the kit. So far, we are still on our journey to "big kid underwear" but with the support and knowledge we've gained using this kit, it's a fun and exciting experience.

Every time I realize I don't have to change another dirty diaper I think about how grateful I am to the Baby Signs Potty Training Program. We started the program about 10 weeks before our son's second birthday. We were somewhat skeptical about whether we could potty train before two, but we followed the program. Our son wore "big boy underwear" to his second birthday party. Now, we smile with amazement and joy when our son shakes his hand with his thumb between his pointer and middle finger (the sign for potty) in front of our faces and then of course we move deliberately to the potty singing, "climb on board the potty train!" We keep the whistle in our bathroom and our son loves to blow the whistle acknowledging his accomplishment.
