This is a fabulous book, and is good for girls and boys. I love that it includes breastfeeding, which is unforunately very rare and hard to find. A definite read for any parent expecting a 2nd (and beyond) child.

A Sweet Book for an Only Child Preparing for a Baby

Sophie and the New Baby is a good story to share with children having trouble getting used to the changes a new baby can bring.

Sophie is an only child who is used to getting a lot of attention from her parents. One spring day, her parents announce that there will be a new member arriving in the family. That baby will be a winter baby. Sophie waits, and waits, and waits. Finally the baby arrives. Sophie is disappointed that the baby cannot play with her. She is even more disappointed when her parents spend all of their time with the baby and not with her. Sophie is sad and lonely. Eventually, with the passage of time, Sophie adjusts and learns to love the little baby.

Catherine Anholt's charming illustrations detail the changing seasons beautifully as Sophie waits for the baby. They also accurately portray the things that occur once the baby arrives: the crying, the nursing, the diaper changes, the holding, the nursing (yes, there are two illustrations of the mom nursing the baby), the growing piles of laundry and dishes...

Sophie and the New Baby gives a young child a good idea of what to expect when a new sibling arrives. It also addresses the negative emotions that can be felt in a reassuring way. This is a very good book to read to an only child who will soon become a big brother or sister.

This is a wonderful book for a sibling (2-4 years of age) who's expecting a new baby in the family. It follows Sophie throughout her mom's pregnancy and then describes how things are once baby arrives. It does so very well, and accurately per my recollection of younger siblings arriving at our house growing up. It is realistic enough that it does show Sophie yelling that she doesn't want "that baby anymore!" Then it describes how Sophie teaches her baby brother to smile, and they become friends.

I love this book. My oldest daughter still requests it, even though her little sister is six months now. I think it really helped ease our baby's arrival ... her big sister knew ahead of time that it would be difficult, and an adjustment, but to be patient and it would work (older sister was 1 month shy of 3 years of age when her baby sister was born).

I can't recommend this book enough! In addition, if you breastfeed or are planning to do so, this book shows the mother breastfeeding the baby (doesn't say what she's doing, and for families who don't breastfeed I doubt that it would be something a child would recognize - but it's great for discussing that with an older sibling if you will be breastfeeding).

We are expecting a baby boy this winter and my daughter Sophie truly enjoyed this book! It not only deals with the emotions of an older sibling but begins with how long the wait is anticipating the birth of a younger sibling.

My 2 1/2 year old loves this book. It gives us a chance to talk about all aspects of having a new baby: the waiting, the coming, the aftermath. We told her about our new baby very early in the pregnancy so it's helpful to have a book that talks about waiting through all those seasons until it finally arrives!

This book has provided a wealth of information. It's not a "what to expect" type book about your body and the developing baby, but rather a planner for finances, insurance coverage, disability leave, wills, your rights and much more. It's basically the stuff you know you should be thinking about, but are too excited about the baby and what's going on with your body to stop and plan for the practical stuff. This book breaks down the information into manageable monthly checklists. If you follow her month to month guidance, you will have less to worry about when the baby arrives knowing you have all your ducks in a row.

My daughter recently had twin premature baby boys--sadly one died--fortunately other twin boy very healthy survivor--and in neo natal unit for a month to gain weight and be sure okay--we needed a book on Preemies-I checked new bookstore and nothing good there--checked Amazon.com-and although this book is 9 yrs old--has everything our neo natal hospital was teaching my daughter and son in law --same neo natal basics and in a book they can use for reference during the busy times of having baby in the home finally--great book--I got an older copy too for Grandma-myself- to read at my home-0-so I can back up my daughter and son in law when they are tired--BEST PREEMIE BOOK YET AND EASILY READ.

This was the best book I have seen for premature babies. When our twin boys were born at 29 weeks, the hospital gave us a book that we could refer to. Everytime you would look at the book it scared you to death. I found this book and I kept it with me at all times. When ever anything came up I would refer to it. The book is very realistic but also very positive. I still refer to it even though our boys are 2. The book is very helpful. I would recomend this book to everyone. It really helped us out through this difficult time.

I purchased this book after the premature birth of our son. He was considered a "micro preemie" being born at 1 lb 14 oz. We were told in the NICU that many preemies have challenges that were unlike "typical" children, and we thought it would be helpful to refer to this book and to educate ourselves so that we could help identify problems that many pediatricians overlook in preemies.

This book is an absolute must-have for any parent of a preemie. I know that weight is always a concern, and the book included boy and girl weight charts and seperated it even further to their birth weight (born less than/greater than 1500 grams.) We still use the weight chart today (our son is 2 1/2 years old)
and it can be used up to age 3.

The definitive resource for parents of preemies

Nothing can prepare you for the experience of having a premature baby. Often, once home with baby, parents are confronted with a child who is obviously different from the typical infant. Finding information and support is difficult, because of the very isolating nature of the experience- a tiny, often ill baby isn't able to cope with being carried to environments where parents could find support. In addition, outcomes are difficult to predict and preemies' issues can be as diverse as their personalities. Fortunately, Amy Tracy and Dianne Maroney's Your Premature Baby and Child provides insight and information in a practical guide that should reside on every preemie parent's bookshelf. Each chapter offers honest assurances about the emotional aspects of caring for a preemie, as well as accurate and detailed information about everything ranging from the homecoming experience, medical concerns, development and early intervention all the way through to beginning school. The epilogue is especially helpful; it validates the emotional effects of prematurity and offers insights from other parents, whose hope and understanding encourage those new to the roller coaster of prematurity. This book is one of the best resources written yet for parents of children born prematurely.

100+ Baby Shower Games is a collection of fun and simple games especially for commemorating a special delivery in the life of a family member or friend! Ideal for baby showers, a great antidote to baby blues, and sure to liven up parties and gatherings, 100+ Baby Shower Games offers suggestions for both before and after a baby's birth, to cheer up moms who may be close at hand or out-of-town. Sample game suggestions include guessing how many safety pins are tucked inside a baby food jar, an active balloon game in which everyone ties a balloon around his or her ankle and tries to stomp other people's balloons while protecting their own, asking guests to fill an empty wine bottle with messages for the baby's 16th birthday (then give the creation to the baby when he or she turns 16), and more. A family-friendly springboard of wonderful ways to celebrate the start of a new life.

This book is loaded with research that supports the claim that you should read to your baby. I knew it made a difference but to see the results of the numerous studies on the topic was shocking. I did not know it made that much of a difference. You owe it to your child to spend some time reading to them. In my opinion, if you want to make an impact on the life of your child, buy this book and read to your child! The book is a quick read and you do not even have to read the whole thing at once. Read the beginning and then read about the different stages as you are going through them. There are a ton of baby books out there (I know because I have bought them) but this one proves that by doing something as simple as reading can make a world of difference in the life of your child. It would also make an amazing baby shower gift, I will not go to another shower again without a copy if this for the parents.

This book is an eye opener! Just wonderful!

Of course it is a joy to sit with a child - a BABY - and read aloud! But this book sheds light on why and how to make it a daily, joyful experience. The research described explains how important the process is on so many different levels you might not have thought of. You can start before birth, for instance! The organization is very helpful, with specific books recommended for each stage of development and coordinated activities.

Very well organized for parents with young children of all ages -- started our infant at one week and by week seven he was focusing on black and white book series and now at week 12 he is grabbing for pages and is truly engaged! As new parents we are excited to see him grow into each level of read aloud and enjoy spending this quality time together. Recommend this book highly as well as the the wonderful book recommendations that are provided by the authors.

When I purchased Baby Read-Aloud basics, I had already read Reading with Babies, Toddlers and Twos and was hoping to complement my reading on the subject of baby books and read-alouds. I personally thought this book was not as helpful or complete, nor did it have as many book suggestions as the first one mentionned above. Still, this book is pretty good. It gives a few suggestions of books for every baby stage, what to do with that book, reading techniques, literacy games, and contains some interviews with parents who went through the read-aloud from birth experience. It is kind of repetitive but easy to read and well organized.

My daughter is 14 months old and insists on being read this book about 10 times a day. She'll pick it up and bring it to me, which is nonverbal communication that even I can understand. She can make all the sounds that the babies in the book make (except for "night night"), which may be why she likes it so much. She also likes seeing the babies and playing with the flaps of the book. She loves this book so much that I'm buying my third copy. She's destroyed the first two, not due to any fault of this sturdy thick cardboard-paged book, but out of sheer hard use, and the fact that most 14 month olds are engines of mass destruction. It's cheap and kids love it - you can't go wrong with this one.

"Noisy Farm," also from BK, is also a big hit in our house. Amazon often offers a deal when you buy both, and if you have a 1 year old, I would just go ahead and buy both. They'll both be a hit.

My daughter (and I!) absolutely love this book! So much, that it has had to be replaced a couple of times. She gets so excited to pull back the flaps and shout out what she is expecting to see. We started reading it at about 6 months - and now at 11 months, she knows it cover to cover!

This was one of the first few books I purchased for my son because I read that babies like to look at other babies. He loves this book! Even at 3 months he would squeal at the pictures. At five months he was trying to lift the flaps. The pictures of emotions with the simple labels are now helping him to imitate sounds at nine months. I highly recommend this to moms looking for books for young babies.

Our son really responded to this book when we first showed it to him when he was, oh, I don't know 6 months or so. Since then, he has come back to it over and over and over, plucking it from his stash of board books which now runs 30 deep. Now at 18 months, he still loves it and says the simple words that correspond with each picture before he flips open the flaps. ("Hee hee" was the first one he said :)) Of all his books, this is the one we have counted on to keep him occupied and engaged while at restaurants, in the car, or as a distractor to head off a mini-tantrum. I am now buying a second copy of the book as the last page of our first one got soaked (juice? water?) and has warped. Actually, I'm tempted to buy a 3rd copy and keep it on hand for baby #2...

This book has been a life saver. I have been referring to it constantly since my baby was born 10 months ago. I have not needed to access other nutritional resources as this book follows all the nutritional recommended guidelines. The recipes are very easy to follow, and turn out just like the book states. It has allowed me to feel empowered and creative with healthy meal planning, even with a very busy schedule. My baby has enjoyed all the recipes so far, and I can't wait to try the toddler recipes that can be used for the whole family. Great Book!

I was quite pleased with my copy of the Baby's Table. It is very helpful when you are just beginning to make your own baby food and need some practical help and direction. Make sure to buy it early on, as I found the first couple of chapters not as useful seeing that my son is 6 months old. The recipes are simple and straightforward. The advice is good - but I did find some of their information contradicts what my Pedatrician told us and what the Health Unit Nutritionist said ie: Egg Yolks before 1 year. Altogether though, a very good book to use as a resource guide.

Baby's Table is a great book for Grandmothers as well as new moms. Want to give advice but don't know how to do it tactfully? The Baby's Table has it all. The added advantage is that you now have an authoritative source to back you. Your daughter can argue with you but not with Baby's Table. Written by a doctor and a teacher, both new moms themselves, you get the nutritional information written in a reader friendly manner. It's well laid out and begins at birth with breast as well as formula feeding. Working moms can use Baby's Table as well and be confident that they are giving their baby the best start.

I looked everywhere online to try to see pages of this baby book before I ordered it, but couldn't find a site anywhere to search inside. I had looked at so many baby books in book stores, at Babies R Us, WalMart, Target, etc... and hadn't found one that really seemed special. I ordered this one due to the great reviews (I was very nervous since I couldn't look inside first)and to my surprise, it is my favorite! While most baby books now have pastel pictures and words that you can barely see, this one is very brightly colored, easy to read with words in black, and the pictures and layout are darling. It has pages to record moments through the first five years, including pages for special artwork and class photos. I highly recommend this precious book.

This is a very touching and encouraging book. Although the book was very short, the positive impact it had on my sister who experienced still birth was overwhelming.

I ordered this book based on a recommendation from a friend. When I received and read it, I was astounded at the depth of maturity and healing the author has experienced. The author points us to the God who not only holds our dear ones we have lost, but who also touches and restores our brokenness. She does so by uniquely and beautifully sharing her own personal journey of the loss of her child, grieving, and trusting God.
As a pastor, I have given "Born To Fly" to three set of parents who have lost a baby, all of whom have been greatly blessed by the book. I highly recommend it.

This book is a gift from God for hurting families. I want all of my friends to read it. You can't read it without a tissue handy. It touched my heart and my spirit, but also gave me hope. It made me understand how it feels to lose a child but have hope of a promise of eternal life.

Masterpiece

Having suffered a stillbirth two months ago, a bereavement nurse gave this book to me today. It couldn't have been published at a better time. It is so poignant, touching and beautiful. It made me cry, but it is a healing cry. My husband and friends were equally moved by it. I am ordering it for my angel baby's grandparents and will tuck my copy safely away in my memory box like the treasure that it is and review it from time to time for heartwarming hopefulness. I cannot recommend it highly enough for anyone who has suffered the loss of a precious baby through miscarriage or stillbirth.
