FROM THE AUTHOR: This book is a fun gift for any new or soon to be new dad. It's meant to give them a laugh, a smile and a hint or two. It's great for showing them they are not alone in their confusion about babies.

Great edition to maternal-child care planning literature
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-30
It is nice to find a care plan book where the primary focus is the healthy expectant mother. The care paths and flow charts provide a clear concise review of the physiological and psychological changes associated with each perinatal period. The care plans flow from the review, empahsizing assessments, interventions and evaluations for normal healthy pregnancies. Each unit also contains flow charts and care plans for common variations and complications of the perinatal period. This book is a helpful complement to other maternal-child nursing texts and in nursing practice.

Cute cover, good book for recordkeeping. I do actually forget to enter most things in it (MD appts, prescriptions), but if I remembered, I would definitely use it more.

Great, simple, encouraging book - European perspective
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-03
This is just an awesome little book - one that I'm so glad I stumbled on accidentally! Due to the smaller size of the book, it's not as in-depth as others, but I actually found that refreshing. After reading all the detailed books that tend to characterize the subject of natural birth/parenting, this book was like a cool drink of water. Although an overview, it gives a very helpful amount of information about even "lesser-known" infant care ideas, such as elimination communication, baby massage, homeopathic/herbal remedies, and much more.

From the style and design of the book to it's beautiful photography (which truly make the book: DK style - multiple photos on each page), each page reminds you of the simple beauty of new life. Janet Balaskas is truly an expert in her field, and her writing style is both informative and encouraging. I only wish I lived in the United Kingdom, where her perspective is the norm, instead of here on the other side of the pond, where even mentioning "natural birth" still elicits all sorts of cynical comments. A truly great book, and one that I highly recommend to any parent interested in giving birth and caring for their baby in the most instinctive, natural, and loving way possible.

Great guide for natural remedies for childbearing year

This book is a great companion to pregnancy and even has suggestions for improving fertility. I used this and her other book, Easing Labor Pain, to prepare a herbal/homeopathic/aromatherapy kit for labor and delivery. I highly recommend this and her other book. They are both very thorough and non-judgemental in tone, so that you can use alternative therapies as a complement to western medicine without feeling like you have to make a choice between the two.
I reviewed some of her suggestions with my Nurse Midwife, she was familiar with them, and gave me the okay to use them during labor and delivery.

I caught Dr Berman's appearance on the Today show just 4 days after our daughter was born stillborn 4 weeks ago. I gave birth at Yale New Haven Hospital (where Dr Berman practices) so I dont know if it was coincidental that I saw this just as we too were experiencing this great loss. To make a long story short, this book has helped me tremendously!! I read thru it in 2 days and cried at every single page. I found it very helpful that my husband and I are not the only ones going thru this sort of pain. The book is full of poems and stories from people who have been thru similiar experiences. This book and Dr Bermans website ...has really opened my eyes and heart to other women who have experienced this. I have been given other books on this subject by friends and family over the past month..and this one is by far superior! I now have a great support group of other people who have had a stillborn child in their 3rd trimester. ...

The best guide for quiet family time together
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-07
We received this book as a gift for our first child. It has been wonderful to learn about the variety of ways touch can calm our baby. We particularly enjoy the quiet time in the evenings when all three of us are together when my husband and I give our baby her nightly massage. Since we have added massage, our baby has been falling asleep faster and sleeping longer. I would recommend this to any couple with a newborn looking to incorporate some quiet, bonding time for the family.

If you believe we can make a difference in the world, please read this book and any other book by Michel Odent. He is knowledge enlighter, a mind broader. As a surgeon he proved we can humanize birth, as a scientist and a philosopher he is proving we can pave the way to a better humanitary civilization through love, in many levels.

If you are a sleep-deprived parent, you may have a tough time getting through one of the lengthier books on sleep. This book provides a great introduction to the subject of sleep, covering such issues as what typical infant sleep patterns are like, the pros and cons of various sleep arrangements for baby, how to deal with common sleep problems in babies and young children, and why naps are important.

This is the book I wish I had when my son was born. There are so many ways to help both the parents and baby in this book, all without having to take pills. There is a complete massage sequence to follow, with specific techniques for colic and teething. There is also a reflexology sequence that will help with breathing problems. this book has advice to help everyone through the first few months of this major life change
