loving, soothing book--our standard gift for newborn-2 years

The alliteration in this book is captivating. It's a beautiful and soothing read and always ends with a warm hug with our children. It is a great nighttime book before bed. My 2 year old and 5 year old love it. We keep a stack at home as it has become our standard gift to newborns and up to age two. We also live in San Francisco, which makes it all the more fun to read and gift!

We checked this book out at the library and my kids (2 and 3)fell in love with it. We read it every night. It's a wonderful story of a day with two different families who go to the zoo. I had to come to amazon to buy it.

My husband bought this book for me because we're adopting a baby soon. We love that it incorporates both human and animal parent and baby relationships through a visit to the zoo. It's mostly mother-focused, but the father does make a nice appearance at the end. We also appreciated the ethnic diversity in the book, especially since the child we're adopting will be darker-skinned than we are. Overall a lovely little book!

My two yr old loves this book!

Lovely story with engaging rhyming verse and nicely done illustrations (though why oh why does the white baby lack a sun hat or awning on her stroller!?). This is a pleasant story which is enjoyable for both parents & tots. A nice gift, or addition to any home library.

My 15 month old (who can't talk yet) adores this book, which we checked out from the library. So much of the subject matter and vocabulary are words that he recognizes and that I use everyday with him (going to bed, bottle, blanket, going to the park, colors and simple phrases). He gets a big kick out of the end when the mommy falls asleep and the baby (who looks just like him in a little red sleeper) calls for daddy instead. Highly recommended!

My 4 and 6 yr olds love this book, and so do I! They have liked it for years. They love the words, and the pictures, and it flows so well. I just love how it sounds, and the oh so simple life portrayed in this book. It makes us all happy to get into this child's family's world. Thank you Amy Schwartz!

My four-year-old laughed until her sides hurt. She was pounding on the floor, sobbing with laughter. Which made ME laugh hard too, which made HER laugh even harder, and then we both almost wet our pants from laughing. This is a great book to enjoy with your toddler or preschooler, especially if they have a "baby" sibling. The illustrations are adorable, and the dialog is very true to life. Can't wait to read more by the talented Amy Schwartz.

This book is a must-have for any parent of a child who does not like to go to sleep. It is as much a book for parents as it is for children, perhaps more! We cracked up at the too-true scenario depicted. You will too!

A wonderful baby shower gift

Review Date: 2002-04-03
My five-year old daughter found this adorable little book recently and we bought it for her to give to an aunt at an upcoming baby shower. It is chock-full of quotations from folks both famous and not so famous, and the reactions any parent will have will range from outright laughter to puddling up. I don't know how author Janet Lanese rounded up all this good stuff, but she did a super job. A sampling:

"The family you come from isn't as important as the family you're going to have."

- RING LARDNER

"To my embarrassment, I was born in bed with a lady."
- WILSON MIZNER

"When I was born, I was so surprised I couldn't talk for a year and a half."
- GRACIE ALLEN

"One trouble in raising a boy is that father always expects son to do exactly as much work as he never did."
- ANONYMOUS

"When we look at actual children, no matter how they are raised, we notice immediately that little girls are in fact smaller versions of real human beings, whereas little boys are Pod People from the Planet Destructo."
- DAVE BARRY

"I just can't get over how much babies cry. I really had no idea what I was getting into. To tell you the truth, I thought it would be more like getting a cat."
- ANNE LAMOTT

You get the idea. Not only is the text eminently readable, but the design is attractive and enhances the quotations. Old-fashioned line drawings and silhouettes abound. All in all, this is a wonderful, wonderful book and just perfect for a niece to give her aunt for the aunt's baby shower--or for anyone to give to anyone who has children either old or young.

This lady knows how to capture the essence of how a baby affects the lives of all those they touch, whether they be blood-related or by choice. She has the knack to not only interview the world of babies, but how to relate all the gamut of feelings that babies bring to our lives. It brought back memories to me of when I was a new mother at age 19 and how prescious was by baby to me, and what did he think about the world he came tumbling into, and this young lady who thought she knew how to handle it all! Good lessons and insight, reviewed and remembered, all which can still be revisited with every new baby I hold and cuddle, even my own! AND, how much love and knowledge, patience and endurance our babies pass on to us!

I really liked this book. It has some really good massage techniques that help to calm the baby. I thought the exercise for the stomach for colic was excellent. I also liked for colic The Whammy for Babies: Vacuum Cleaner Sounds to Soothe Colic and Fussiness.

We have a six week old infant who used to writhe a lot, lifting her feet up in the air, moaning and she looked just uncomfortable. We used the massage and reflexology techniques described in the book for children with digestive problems and her behaviors seem to have decreased. The instructions are very clearly written and instead of diagrams there are photographs to guide you through each step. I found this book very helpful. I haven't taken a formal course in infant massage, and really after going through this book, I don't think I will.

This book has great advice for moms wanting to know how to breast feed, I bought mine whilst eagerly awaiting my little ones arrival.
It does not go in depth as much as other BF books but is a great reference guide, with sound advice and a handy log at the back on the book to keep track of feedings and diaper changes. I think this book is beneficial for tired people who need quick advice on the main topics of BF.

This is the best breastfeeding book I've seen

This book gives you detailed information on HOW to breastfeed. This is the only book I've seen that does this. It tells you where to put your arms and hands and how to position the baby...the things you really need to know when there's no one there to show you. The illustrations are extremely helpful when you've got a hungry baby in your arms.

This book answers the questions that all moms have. Is the baby getting enough milk, how often should baby eat, how do I store expressed breastmilk...it's all in this book in an easy-to-understand format.

I have referred to this book countless times and have found it to be invaluable to me as a nursing mom.

A must for every new mom.
Buy it before you deliver.
I wish I had not waited this long to purchase it.
Sue Tiller's book helps you to breastfeeding success. It is user friendly and it stays flat on the table so you never lose your place while holding a squirmy and hungry baby.
A truly excellent book.

One of the biggest fears about pregnancy is the actual giving birth. You don't know what to expect, etc. Well, this book helps to calm fears about labor and puts it all iin perspective. I really liked it and would recommend it to anyone who feels they need some advice in this area. I also liked and would recommend You Know You're Pregnant When. Reflections on the Longest Nine Months of My Life

Best book out there to prepare for labor!

I LOVE this book!!! It is VERY difficult to find a book about labor and delivery that is focused on natural, holistic philosophies. Of the few that are out there, this is by far the best! I started out with other, more well known approaches and appreciated the general nature of the techniques, but found them lacking in spiritual depth and feeling somewhat superficial. If you just want techniques, they may be good approaches for you. However, I was looking for something that had a deep, philsophical foundation in addition to great techniques. What I love about this book is how it talks about the entire process of pregnancy, labor/delivery, and postpartun care. It is truly an holistic approach and I am grateful to have stumbled upon it!! I can't wait to read the author's other books!

This book offers a method that is new in this sense, methods that are steeped in ancient tradition and proven scientifically have been brought together in a cohesive form for women to use in childbirth. It is a method that can help erase fears and help women discover their own power. This method gives women the opportunity to give birth to their baby in a concious and healthy way whether they have their babies without drugs, with drugs or by cesarean. I highly recommend this book.

I am not a decent cook ,and even I figured out how to do this. I've used my food processor more in the past month than I ever have in my whole life. Recipes are very easy and there are some suggestions for "medleys", even using tofu and other items I wouldn't have thought of. Everything tastes delicious--I have no problem actually tasting the food before serving. Also we've found making our own food is much cheaper than buying jars (plus, we have twins.) When I tell people we make our own, they usually say we must be crazy or an "earth mother"--really it is very easy, tasty, and cheap. This book does not have recipes for toddler foods, only pureed baby foods.

The best baby food resource
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-31
This book is the best baby food resource I have found. It makes preparing foods so quick and easy. The recipes are divided by age range (4-6 mos, 6-8 mos. etc) and within the age range each food is given a page. Not only does it include recipes, but also includes variations with appropriate ages and other foods that can be combined with this food and appropriate ages. It is such a great reference. Furthermore, I had a question about one of the recipes and e-mailed the address in the front of the book. Within a few hours I had a response from one of the authors - I was very impressed. I have several books on baby food and this one is the easiest to read and use -if you're only going to buy one, this should be it!

Great to start with!

This is the best make your own baby food book I've found! I purchased several other books (Simply Natural Baby Food, The Well Fed Baby, Organic Baby and Toddler Cookbook and The Petit Appetit Cookbook to name a few)but most barely mention infants and start with older babies. I wanted to know exactly when to start my three month old on baby food and what foods were appropriate at what age. This book gives you that in a simple, straight forward easy to follow manner. I can't recommend this enough. It's a perfect book to start with. They also combine this book in a kit that includes the food trays needed and a how to video. It's under a different name and is called the So Easy Baby Food Kit.

This was book was so incredibly useful in the decision to vaccinate or not. I had read many books before which were either vehemently against or vigorously for vaccinations. I was at my wits end trying to find a source which presented the information in an unbiased format- this book does exactly that. The author has no agenda, other than wanting people to make informed decisions, and he presents the information fairly. There are no scary stories to play on your emotions, which many other books do present quite often. As a parent this book was indispenible and I wish every parent could have it in their home library!! You won't regret purchasing and reading this book!!

A very (_VERY_) rare objective look at this issue

Review Date: 1998-07-21
My wife and I figuratively nearly came to blows over the decision to immunize our children. It came down to the point where we _had_ to find an objective way to make a decision. So, as is our practice, we start reading books.

Only to find that every book written on this subject, on either side of the issue, is extremely inflammatory, biased, and inaccurate. I am not talking about a small sample of books -- the two of us read nearly a dozen books and several dozen articles. And our reading was doing more harm than good.

Until we found this book. This book finally gave us the objective information we were looking for, and we were able to make our decision.

The book is layed out with an introduction to general concepts, then a chapter per disease. Each chapter provides: 1) A description of the disease, with the range of effects observed from that disease, and the historical trend in the severity of outcomes from that disease. 2) A description of the efficacy ! of the vaccine (i.e. what is its effect on the number or severity of cases of the disease.) 3) A description of the range of other known effects of the vaccine, and the severity of those effects.

That is the essential material needed to make a decision about immunization, which is above all else a process of weighing one set of risks against another set of risks.

For those who wish to treat immunization as a decision, this book will help you do so.

An easy to comprehend overview.

This has been our baby's favorite book from the age of 6 months on, which is why we are buying another copy, as she has succeeded in ripping the others to shreds. While not Shakespeare, the text has a nice rhythm and offers a nice overview of the activities of babies (including a sequence in which a baby learns to walk, with each image showing the child slightly older) while the art is completely winning, really capturing the expressions and feelings of various children. Charming and fun, I would suggest it highly to small children that get excited when they see other babies.

Babies Delight

Review Date: 2007-06-02

Filled with the actions and activities that comprise the lives of babies, the text is verb filled, "Stand, wobble. Sway, wobble. Bump! Step, walk, toddle." It also frequently rhymes. The rhythmic prose is scattered across the pages with absolutely charming illustrations of babies and toddlers.

On pastel pages, babies of all sizes, shapes and colors are drawn in soft pencil. Some of the babies reappear in different guises as the pages are turned. Babies are difficult to draw. Just consider the babies
in famous painting across the years. This artist not only knows babies in all their guises, not always happy,he can flat out draw them. In one double-page spread, the naked baby is not only life-size, one wishes to
sweep the baby up.

Babies' bodies do amazing things. In this gorgeous picture book, young children can enjoy exploring a few of these things with their parents. Fingers, toes, hair and nose, there are many ways babies use their bodies. Don't forget the diapers, too!

The sweet illustrations and gentle prose in this book make it a winner. Babies and toddlers will enjoy seeing other babies and toddlers, while preschoolers will love to see what they were like not so long ago. Parents, friends, and relatives who read this book to their warm lap-bundles will smile at the tenderhearted pages as much as their children.

This book is cute, sweet, and sure to be a hit.
