This is a great book if you are having twins or know of anyone having multiples. I'm a parent of twins and unlike other books I've read, the author offers a lot of practical advice. Not just like what stuff to buy and what products to avoid, but also things to try if both babies are crying or how to warm up formula for both twins at the same time. The book is comprehensive and I like how everything is organized by task and each chapter starts with a checklist, so you can quickly find a good suggestion for any question you might have. Plus, she's funny. There's a lot of good natured humorous advice throughout. Really worthwhile and I highly recommend!!

I have 19-month-old twins (and a six-year-old) and I wish this book was around when they were born (or better yet when I was pregnant!). This book cannot be missed if you are a parent of twins. Tons of great tips in an easy to navigate format. This book will help you in so many ways --from preparing for their arrival to tips on getting through the night; from how to get your errands done (yes, with the babies!) to keeping the peace as they get older; plus lots of great resources! This book makes you feel like you can have control over the situation before you. Thank you to the author for finally writing a wonderful, helpful book for parents or caregivers of twins.

As a pediatrician, I am often asked for parenting book recommendations. I have always been at a loss when my busy and overwhelmed parents of multiples would ask for suitable resources. Thank you Mrs. Scalise, for creating this excellent book full of common sense solutions. I know my parents will thank you, too!

When people discover they are pregnant with twins their first reaction is often shock. After a short time, they begin to search for resources. Twin Sense is a no nonsense book for parents searching for tips and tricks from "seasoned" parents of twins. Ms. Scalise (mother of 3 including twins) has successfully condensed words of wisdom from various sources into this book. The chapters are very organized making the book easy to navigate. Even if a parent only has a few minutes to read; while caring for their babies, they will find helpful and practical tips.

I received this book as a gift and may I say it is so clear and practical. The first thing I thought was that I wished I had it when I was just having my first child, not my second and third! Excellent advice for any new mom, but probably moreso for moms of multiples, just because it is so daunting.

We bought this book for our 5 year old. Every night she loves to see what her little sister looks like, even if she is still in mommy's tummy! Of course there are some things that we skip over. Would be great for a first time mom also, to get to know her new little one.

I think this book is pretty good. The informaion presented is different from what you get in the 'what to expect' pregnancy books. The pictures, however, make me worry. I just somehow got the idea that maybe some of the pictures where taken of babies who were stillborn, or worse. As a person who is normally very sensitive to these types of things, being preganat, hormonal, and overly emotional, I can't look at the pictures when I read this book. Maybe I'm all wrong, and there is nothing to worry about, but still...

This book (which concentrates on the baby) is the perfect complement to other pregnancy books (that focus on the mother). I gave this book as a gift to several of my expecting friends. It wasn't until I used for my own pregnancy that I realized how extraordinary it really is. I am a third of the way through my pregnancy and I feel totally 'connected' with my child! This book is great for a first, last or anywhere in-between pregnancy because it provides detailed information about my unborn baby's day-to-day development that I haven't seen anywhere else. I loved the way the information was presented...with adorable images and places for me to jot down notes about how I was feeling and what I was thinking. I use the book each day to see what has changed today in my baby and to jot questions that come up to take with me to the doctor's. This book makes a magical time even more real.

I gave this book to my wife when we found out she was pregnant. It enabled us to follow along each day with the changes that were occurring in our new baby. The book shows a picture of what she looked like, what physical changes were taking place and what she could do. There really is no other book like this. We really felt connected to our unborn child earlier.

Parents are in important resource in the filed of Autism. Many Parents of children with Autism are the first to notice that something is different about their children, but are often ignored or made to feel like they are stupid, inexperienced or overreacting. This book provides parents and professionals with a solid manner to detect abnormalities before the age of one. I firmly believe that this can lead to a better means of communication between Doctors,Researchers and Parents. Accomplishing such a collaboration is a large step toward understanding Autism. Anyone who has a child with Autism, works in the field or would like to know more about Autism should own this book!!!!

An excellent concise read for parents of typical and autistic babies alike

This new model for early diagnosis probably won't go mainstream until the research also includes numbers for babies who display early motor issues but *don't* go on to develop autism. In the meantime, however, it provides very valuable insight into how complex skills such as righting, crawling etc can be further broken down into sequential actions. Certainly the findings reported in this book could create an avalanche of inquiries at pediatric offices but at least in our case, we are very much reassured by better understanding how motor skills are developed normally as contrasted to abnormal/impaired development. Given how easily the information can be digested, it should probably be a mainstay of the pediatric office... either in book form or as short educational video clips looped on a flat panel. If nothing else, it will give the average person a better appreciation of why autistic children are developmentally delayed and perhaps help foster a culture of acceptance.

This book is a "must read" for health care professionals, other persons who work with infants and parents of infants, and parents who are concerned about their baby's motor development. The authors offer motor development clues gleaned from videotapes of children diagnosed with autism to help parents and others identify possible early autism in infants. Delightfully drawn graphic illustrations enhance the easily understood narrative. The authors identify numerous autism information and therapy resources.

This new system for detecting the earliest signs of autism - in a baby - offers a brand new theory and comes from a husband/wife team who have worked for nearly two decades to develop ways of detecting signs of potential autism in a child. By expanding patterns of sitting, crawling and walking and comparing them with those of children later definitively diagnosed, they present both general information about autism's causes and progression and a survey of tests the parents can easily conduct to help define and identify early autism onset with respect to their children.

I bought this book used (which was pretty cool) from Amazon. Book gives information about before baby is born and what the baby is going through on the inside, what they can hear. It is really amazing that babies/young children can learn two or more languages at once, this book explains how this happens. Lots more information on why babies do certain things, how they learn, how they see and what they see and when, little games to play with your baby to develop learning.

This book is an absolute must if you'd like to avoid the terrible twos stage. I read this book as well as his other entitled "How to Raise a Happy Unspoiled Child". I followed his guidlines as best as I could and today I credit Burton White for how wonderful my five yr old turned out to be! My son went through what I call the "terrific twos" and people comment on his well-behaved and happy disposition all the time! He teaches you how to "discipline" appropriately according to age without inflicting physical pain to the child. But you must begin by ten months at the latest. Starting early is the secret. Get his books and begin now for the sake of your child's happiness and maturity. Good luck!

This book contains outdated infomation such as using pacifiers and its effect on teeth. I found this book informative and agreed with a lot of the things he had to say such as not letting a baby "cry it out" and explaining the importance of monitoring hearing ability. What I liked about this author is that he accepts differences of opinion of other readers who may disagree with him.

The author discusses the role of the father, bonding, toilet training and gives a list of recommended books to read.

Some of the things he discusses:
Recommended Child-Rearing Practices
Language Development
Some Childrearing practices he doesn't recommend
Helping the infant develop specific skills
How to screen for mild to moderate hearing loss in children
Toys he recommends for babies and toddlers
Talks a little about the effects of restrictive devices such as playpens
Obstacles to optimal achievement in the 5 fundamental edcational processes
Nuturing the Roots of Intelligence
A chart of recommended materials for your child to play with such as pots & pans
Sibling Rivalry
Discipline
The Critical Importance of Hearing Ability which includes a parents' checklist and steps to take if hearing loss is detected
The Needs of Infants & Toddlers
Play

Finally---a voice of reason.

Thank goodness I picked this one up. My bookshelf was full of books that were too harsh (like Gary Ezzo on scheduling babies), too condescending ("What to Expect the First Year"), or relied too much on anecdotal research (like "The Baby Book" by William Sears, an otherwise wonderful book). Mr. White's goal is to help you develop your infant into a happy, "delightful" two year old who is a good companion. His methods ring true to one who is very nurturing, but has heard the folk wisdom about spoiling a baby. Do your baby a favor and read either this book or his other, shorter one called "How to Raise A Happy, Unspoiled Child."

This book didn't serve as a reference on the "how to's" of infant care, but instead provided me with answers to so many of the fundamental problems new parents agonize over. It was such a wonderful change to hear Mr. Morris, a zoologist, dispell cultural myths and observe nature for explanations and suggestions. Reading this book was fun and made me feel confident that my parental instincts were in line with good care for my baby.

Forget Dr. Spock, read this & learn to CARE for your baby.

Review Date: 1996-12-19
After the birth of my now-four-year-old daughter, this was the only "baby book" I read that made any sense at all. Morris' describes the mother-child contract, a reciprocal exchange of the baby making his/her needs known and mother fulfilling those needs. He puts into words the joy each mother finds in responding to her baby, and the incredible base of life-long security established in an infant whose needs are met by a loving, playful, and competent mother. I read the chapter "Why do Babies Cry?" every other day to remind myself that what I did instinctually with my baby (i.e., pick her up whenever she cried and figure out what she needed) was exactly right. Reading "Babywatching" always boosted my confidence, and made me feel like part of a competent mother-child pair. Reading other baby books (Spock, Brazelton) always made me feel unsure and question whether I was doing the right thing. The chapters "Where do Babies Sleep?" "What do Babies Eat?" "Why do Babies Cry?" and "What Comforts a Baby?" should be issued to every parent before they take baby home from the hospital. Truly caring for a baby means connecting to your baby on many levels: physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual (baby intellect being the mimicking and copying they employ to learn human communication.) Babywatching describes, in simple terms, how to make these connections with your baby, and, by extrapolation, with all of the people in your lives

The Character Connection tapes reflect the best of what clinical wisdom and behavioral science have to offer on rearing healthy children and youth. Inherent in this approach is the recognition that relationship rather than manipulative tactics and stratetgies is the key to successful parenting. The conversational format complements the message by being interactive rather than dydactic. Principles of successful parenting emerge through discussion of concrete, real-life questions and situations. I recommend Character Connection to both prospective and current prents as a guide to the most important endeavor adult life has to offer.

Great reference for feeding natural, healthy whole foods to your baby. It does not, however, follow others' advice on foods that aren't recommended to be made at home. Baby food manufacturers remove nitrates from root vegetables such as carrots, which you cannot do at home, but this book has receipes for these foods. Need another reference, but overall a good book.

I had decided a long time before having a baby to make my own food. I have been doing internet research and talking to a lot of moms about what they did (including my own!), and finally went to the store and randomly bought this book to get started. What a surprise - this book had literally everything I needed.

I was very impressed with all the information besides recipes. It really gives a lot of information about starting solids, allergies and what foods to wait on. Every stage first has a summary of what you can introduce into your child's diet and then an additional chapter of just recipes. Being new to the whole baby food world, this information was great and also very up to date. I have been comparing this book's recommendations to other book's recipes as a guideline. The recipes provided are simple and easy. The book also has a lot of international ideas and recipes using items I wouldn't think of buying, but am really glad I did after.

Now I do have a few minor complaints. One is that some recipes call for items that are hard to find. For example, when I decided to make rice cereal it called for adding "kombu" which is a type of seaweed. I was able to find some at a local asian grocery store, but I would think in other areas this might be difficult to find. The book does include a list of websites where these unusual items can be bought.
Also some of the directions for the recipes can be a little too general for a noncook like myself. For example when I started cooking my first recipe (rice cereal) it said for it to simmer for 90 minutes. Well I didn't realize that I should be stirring this occasionally and a lot got stuck to the bottom. Afterwards I was like, "duh" but I guess when I follow I recipe I appreciate all the details.

Overall this book was great and I know I am going to totally wear mine out as I try more and more recipes from it. If you are just beginning the solids experience and want a comprehensive book that includes recipes and other important information, look no further!

I was searching relentlessly for a book about making your own baby food since that's what I've always wanted to do. I always try to get everything organic for my little girl. I've been just buying the gerber organic first foods and that's a good second choice for me, but I would love to make my own. I am a stay at home mom for the most part, but I do not cook at all! (Strange, I know!) Making baby food is going to be a big thing for me! :o)

The recipes in other books were overwhelming to me as they were quite complicated and required a lot of what I would call more advanced cooking skills and of course, ingredients that I've never even eaten before. Almost a little too extravagant of a gourmet for a baby, I would think!

The recipes in this book are very simple, yet there are a some with a higher level of difficulty with rarer ingredients that would entice more advanced cooks to try.

Jam-packed with up to date information - it was the newest book I could find out there published in 2008!!! Gives information such as what foods should be avoided and until what age. (For instance, did you know they raised the age at which you can introduce chocolate to 3 years of age?)

The book is smaller than I thought, which makes it very manageable.

It also lays/falls open very well naturally, which will come in handy when I want to try some recipes. I won't have to keep opening the book with possibly messy hands.

I saw a quick recipe for babies 16 months and older called "Egg Pizza" which was just some beaten eggs cooked into an omelet shape, then sliced up like pizza with cheese on top. I just thought how cute and what fun for a toddler to get "pizza" for breakfast. Even would be a cute idea for pre-schoolers/early elemetery students and at those ages, you can add more toppings to keep it interesting and nutritious for them! It's the cute little things like this, that really make the book special.

Very easy and fun to read! The colors are pleasant which always makes it easier to get excited to dive in and read it!

So far, I just love this book. I can't wait to share it with friends and family so we can all educate ourselves and make the healthiest food we can for our babies!

I have recommended this book to my daughter's daycare and even offered to buy the book for them (I could not find the book locally or they would have had it this morning.). This book is easy to read and is well organized. It is very concise, which makes it very managable when you only have a few minutes to spare. Buy this book, you won't regret it.
