Many parents bemoan the lack of a manual for raising their children. Well, this book provides the new parent with a variety of ideas and guidelines for taking care of their new baby. This book is an excellent information source for parents. Dr. Christophersen's common-sense approach is enlightening and helps calm the unsure parent. A must read book for every new parent.

Not So Good

We purchased this book as a guide for our new baby and it just wasn't very good. Like most other "Idiot's Guide to" books this book is much too general and not the shelf reference book we were looking for. An example is information on reflux which is something we encountered. The book has about one small paragraph and better information was easily found on the internet.

If you want a great "owners manual" for your new baby there are much better choices out there.

If ever there was an owners manual for babies, this has got to be it! I am five months pregnant, and just started reading this book. I am not even done, and I already love it! This book should be handed out by every ObGyn to first time parents!

I was disappointed in this book. I missed in the description that the author uses anecdotes about other children. I don't care for books that are written that way. I don't want stories of others and this book is full of them. I just want straight foward common sense advice. Read descriptions of books very carefully before purchasing.

Love this book!!!

Wow, I have the complete opposite take than the other reviewer. I absolutely love this book-it is so in depth and really explains children at every single developmental/emotional stage ages 1-3. Most books have a paragraph or maybe a few pages for every "problem" or developmental stage-this book has whole, very descriptive chapters. I recommend this book to all the new parents I know. There is a lot of reading but I love to read and soak in knowledge so this book is perfect to me.

When i was 14 my parents bought me this book for $20. I told them that it wasn't going to help them to understand my needs (games and party). The book depicts some urban myths about drugs, alcohol, eating disorders, which explain their issues thru examples and make believe scenarios. Nevertheless this book does have its merit because it hasn't been written before regarding issues as adolescence. But don't count this book as the truth of what's going on. I was bored when I attempted to finish reading it, I look forward to see this book recommended on reading rainbow. buy it!

This is a nice book. Couldn't beat the price. (I think I paid $0.01, and three or four for shipping). I should have paid closer attention to the title: Getting To Know Your One-Year-Old is *exactly* what this book is. It isn't a parenting book, per se. It simply explains, step by step, what your child may be thinking when they act certain ways, and what might precipitate those actions. It is insightful, but not a tool to guide your parenting skills, necessarily.

Infant and Toddlers in Out-of-Home Care

Infant and Toddlers in Out-of-Home Care does a good job covering the different areas of development including cognitive, speech/language, and social development. It also covers illnesses that are common amoung young children in out-of-home settings in much detail. Although this book is very informative it is heavy with studies adn statistics which make it very difficult to read and uderstand. A reader will find it necessary to review the information more than once to gain the full meaning of the text. I would recommend this book only as a college text when others are not available and would not recommended it for simple general interest reading.

Could work IF your pregnant with your first, not working.

Great philosophy, made perfect sense and was easy to read and understand. Be prepared for lots of diaper changes and lots of committment and time. This would work great if you purchase this book while pregnant, with your first child and not planning on working. Otherwise I wonder how practical or do-able this would be with a second or third child in addition to housework, cooking, errands, etc.? It seems as though the authors child was "the chosen one", never was it mentioned that he fussed or refused to go potty even once. I was disappointed that the book didn't say "purchase while pregnant" on the cover. I purchased this with the intent of using this on my third child, however she's already 11 months old and I feel that, given her age, this book doesn't really apply.

This book provides useful suggestions on how to engage infants and toddlers in conversation during a parent's day to day activities. It also provides guidelines for introducing children to books and to maintain their interest in word discovery through literature, songs and rhymes. There is a wonderful chapter for parents to make their own inexpensive but imaginative toys. I had already read several books on children's linguistic development before buying this one, so I was disappointed with the redundant information I found in this book and was a little surprised to discover the authors using a very straight-forward and simple writing style. However, when I finally read the back cover of the book, I realize they intended the audience to be "low literacy parents and parents for whom English is a second language". I actually admire their down-to-earth approach compared to the high-jargoned variety of books that fill the bookstores. This book will be useful for daycare providers who need ideas to communicate to parents in an effective manner.
