A must have book for any parent with a two year old!

I am a first time mother of a two-year old and found myself able to relate to this book. It has answered many of my questions concerning a number of topics, such as tandrums, sleeping problems, discipline and so much more. I would recommend this book to any parent who has a child entering the "terrible-twos." Unlike many parenting books, this book divides the second year into three different month groups, which allows you to see the progress your child will make throughout the whole year. I feel as if the book has given me hope for the coming year, that I still might be able to keep my sanity, as well as manage my overactive little girl.

Parent's point of view

The third year of life like all other books in this series is truely based on parents point of view, inputs from real parents and how to handle today's problems in raising children. It deals with issues of play activities, toilet training, sibling rivalry, schools and general guidence about discipline, socialization and laungage development of a child in the third year of life. For me personally it was a good support book.

This is the first book that I have read concerning babies.

As a father to be, I found the book light reading. Having only 79 pages help! A concise outline on various growing stages of the baby and what to expect are provided. The best part is the author provided an insight into the psychological feeling of both the babies and the parents with clear examples.

Although the book is brief, it provides a good starting point!

I have all five dvd collection of "your baby can read". My 25 month old son has been watching these videos for about a year and knows how to read at least 30 words so far. These word cards are laminated so it will keep relatively intact with continual assult from grubby little fingers. But do keep in mind that these cards are not indestructible so make sure the baby is supervised when working with them. The reason I don't give these cards 5 stars is that they don't have have the slide out pictures like the cards that came in a 5 disc collection as a bonus. Those kept my son's interest as he would look at the word and pull out the corresponding picture confirm his recognition of the word. Still, I feel that this is a much hoped for addition to "Your baby can read" family.

I expected to find everything in here, How much milk I should pump to feed my baby, how many times does a 3-months-old has to eat, for how long?? But I couldn't find those answers... I don't know if the book is too big to read and when you have a baby you have too little time... or the writes expect you to read it while you are pregnant.
Although it has some useful information, not sure if I will recommended to a friend.. I think all the information you want to know is in the Internet.

While the American Academy of Pediatrics book is good, this one is more user friendly. It's divided by age, you can skim what you need without having to read the whole thing in one go.

Book is a great follow up to the other "what to expects" and I will be using it as reference for awhile. Seller had accidentally sent wrong book but was kind and fast in replacing it with correct one.

I was so excited about the title of this book but I was terribly disappointed once I began reading. I really could not get past the repeated references to monkey-cave-whatever children. I know I am raising a human being! My child is not "evolving." She is growing and learning. I took this right back to the store.

Better books to read: "Positive Discipline in the First Years", "The First Three Years of Life", and "Raising a Happy, Unspoiled Child."

I admit I've not read the book, so take that as you will. However, after reading all the reviews positive and negative, all the information on this book provided by this site and the first page option, I have come to the conclusion that this book will help a small group of people, but on the whole is not useful. I am almost saddened to see so many positive reviews advocating that one lock their child in their room at night to make them sleep on their own. In the same breath this man insists that we speak "toddler-ese" because the child won't understand more? How will a being that doesn't understand more than primitive language (supposedly) understand the concept of being locked in their room, albeit "lovingly".

I also find fault in the idea that one should "talk like a cave man" to a toddler because that's what they will understand. From day one we didn't do baby talk, we didn't shorten words or sentences for ease. We just spoke to her. Normally using proper grammar. At 15 months old her vocabulary was reaching over 150 words. Now, my daughter is almost 3 and is quite articulate. I've never once in her life hear her say, "Kiara need milk". It's always "Mommy, I need some milk." (Please is optional, but we're getting there.) I feel that the cave-man talk stunts their growth and understanding of the way people are to talk and interact with one another. It supports the laziness that we're finding in our children's studies as evidenced by flagging test scores and general apathy regarding education. Give your child the tools to express themselves rather than dumbing down the world. People underestimate the intelligence of babies/toddlers far too much. Quite sad, really, as children are amazing and incredible creatures.

Tantrums happen. Kids want to cuddle before bed. The lack of these things doesn't necessarily make them "happy" nor does the inclusion of these "stumbling blocks" indicate an "unhappy child".

This book is not for our family.

Most kids love unusual

It felt unusual to do what the author suggests, but every child in my family & day care responded/responds so well to the ideas presented. Children are not little adults, their brains work differently. The adult who assumes the concepts in the book won't work & who therefore practice with obvious cinicism are going to have trouble. Give yourself & the child a fair chance with the suggestions made in this book & the rewards will be awesome!

It wasn't the wonderful, magical cure that I had heard about. My toddler was no happier with me acting like a "cave man" than she was with me acting like myself. It is informative and give you some good info on reflecting feelings back to children, but overall, there isn't much there that most of us do not already know.

I would recommend this book to any mother who would like to take a second look at discipline methods. The spanking, slapping, and pinching didn't make sense to me, and I didn't feel right doing it, but I didn't know how else to discipline. This book shows you how to discipline positively without all the hitting and yelling and bad feelings and attitudes. It is already working with my two year old son, and i feel so much better as a mom. I'm able to relax and enjoy my son instead of feeling constantly on edge thinking I have to scold him for every little thing he does. The biggest part of positive discipline is understanding where your little one is coming from developmentally. This book is great! A must must must read!

Positive Discipline: The First Three Years-Laying the Foundation for Raising a Capable, Confident ChildWell written, easy to read and very practical. My daughter is 13 months old. This book has helped me to understand life from her perspective. I now am more likely to enjoy her tenacity and have tools to keep her safe without all the "fussing".

I recommend these books (Your ONE Year Old, Your TWO Year Old, Your THREE Year Old, Your FOUR Year Old, Your FIVE Year Old, Your SIX Year Old, Your SEVEN Year Old, Your EIGHT Year Old, Your NINE Year Old, Your TEN-to-FOURTEEN Year Old. These books were writtten by Louise Bates Ames, PhD, Fances L. Ilg, MD and Sidney M. Baker MD of the Gesell Institute of Human Development. They are NOT a "how to" book for parents -- but rather provide a perspective of life from the child's various ages. I found the books to be of such value that I purchase the entire series for new parents. Somehow I forgot to purchase these books for my niece when she started her family. She expressed some concerns about her seven year old son's behavior (that I knew from experience to be that typical of seven year olds). I purchased the books from the series that will help my niece from here on. She LOVES them! I have a feeling she will use them and pass them along to other parents. My original set are part of my permanent library. I highly recommend these books for your permanent library as well!

Worthless. Completely outdated and condescending. I was hoping for some practical insight into my relationship with my three year old and instead I was advised that I should leave her with a teenage babysitter as much as possible. The 80s were a good decade for music but apparently not for parenting advice. I thought $11.00 was a value; this book wouldn't be a value at $1.00.

I love this series of books. They are a bit dated in pictures, etc. But the advice is good, and the authors are extremely reputable. They know their stuff. The advice is as good today as it was when they were first written. I love how they are a fast, easy, read.

I keep purchasing these small books full of great information for my daughter, whose little girl is 2 1/2. It is a comfort to my daughter to find confirmation of her intuition and observations about the developement of her child. The suggestions bring, good results, and the whole book makes three generations of us happier. This booklet may be insufficient by itself to raise a well adjusted child, but it contains the essentials. Makes a useful gift as a stocking filler for a parent to be, a little birthday gift etc.

I absolutely love this book. I purchased it for my son when he was an infant and he's now 3.5 years old. I have since purchased more for my friends. My only issue with this book is that you have to know how to use the pronunciation key to teach the foreign words. I don't really know it so I found it a bit challenging. Otherwise, I think every mother should have one and read it often. It was a nightly routine for me. Now we've added many, many books to our schedule, but this is still a favorite.

The reviewers who gave this a bad rating had very young children, I noticed. My 2 year old and I LOVE this book. Yes, some of the pages are torn, and the spiral binding is not stellar, but I would not let a 19 month old have a "paper" book anyway. Just wait a while, moms, and this book will be one of your favorites. It's great for bedtime and there are so many questions/ discussions you can have with it. Love it!

When I purchased this a book a few months ago I thought that it would be a good teaching book when my daughter (now 19 months) got a little older. Some of the activities uses teaching questions and information that is geared more toward a preschooler. But when I showed her the book, she got so excited about it! She loves to look through the book and identify everything she knows. She even recognizes characters from the Baby Einstein videos.

Like other parents have mentioned, she has torn pages from the book, so I'm buying a new one to put away for when she gets a little older. I also view this book as a great, long-term investment, with wonderful ideas for everyday activities or teaching themes.
