AN EASY TO READ GUIDE FOR FAMILY HEALTH

AS A NUTRITIONIST WHO ALSO COOKS FOR A FAMILY I FOUND THE BABY FOOD BIBLE TO BE A COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO FEEDING A FAMILY WELL. I FOUND MYSELF READING IT THROUGH AS THOUGH IT WERE A NOVEL AS THE STYLE IS CONVERSATIONAL. THE DETAILS OF HEALTHY EATING ARE CLEAR; THE RECIPES EASY TO FOLLOW; THE ADVICE RE: PICKY EATERS SENSIBLE.

I MOST LIKED THE EMPHASIS ON FAMILY MEALS. FAMILY MEALS HAVE DISAPPEARED FROM THE LANDSCAPE AND IT WAS GOOD TO SEE SUPPORT FOR REEMPHASIZING THIS IMPORTANT PART OF FAMILY LIFE.

Great for first time moms

I bought this book thinking I would get a good idea of how to prepare nutritious baby food...I got that and then some! It offers recipies as well as a list of some of the best foods for your baby AND theory behind HOW to feed your baby and why. It includes charts on how much to start feeding and when. Way worth the price

Extremly informative and easy to read

This book puts it all together for you. I have 2 children (3 and 1 yrs old). I wish I had this book earlier for my now picky eating 3 yr old. This book helps you understand all the wholesome choices available and how easy and important it is to serve them. What makes this book unique is that the recipes are for the whole family (what a concept)so you are no longer a short order cook. This is a must read for anyone with kids and is very affordable.

This book provides easy to follow songs and signing for your toddler. This might be considered the first step in teaching your baby how to sign. After reading through the book, I got ideas about engaging activities to perform with my child, but wished there were more displays of words to sign.

What an amazing concept, the ability to communicate with my granddaughter at 10 months. The author is able to make her musical notes jump right off the page with easy-to-read explanations & signs. I particularly enjoyed the stories which made this phenomenon come to life. This has become my "baby bible" as I continue to re-read and practice as often as I can, and now at 14 months, signing has become second nature to my granddaughter, i.e. "please, more, all done, milk, love," etc. The accompanying CD is unmistakably the highlight of our day as we sign, sing, and dance to the author's melodies. A "must" for any library, young or old!

I haven't found anything as brilliant as this. It really puts the importance of nurturing your baby from day one into perspective. Everyone who has young children, works with children, or is going to have children MUST READ THIS. There is ground breaking scientific information that is really spelled out for those non-neurologists.

This book is an excellent description of how parents/caregivers can support healthy cognitive and emotional development in small children. It's extremely reinforcing for things you do naturally as a parent, and also provides great recommendations for new activities.

although some of the topics in the book you already know if you've read other books on babies, found it to be very helpful and easy to understand the link between common recommendations and the science behind them, would highly recommend...

To our delight, our 17-month old daughter is not too young for this beautifully illustrated Lamaze title. She becomes completely absorbed in this quick read: she especially likes the little surprises behind the story-related flaps. We love the rich illustrations, rhyming text and the non-violent version of the story, where nobody gets eaten or hacked to death with an axe.

A wonderful, stimulating, interactive book inspiring reading

My daughter (almost 2 years) has been hooked into reading by scratch and sniff books and lift the flap books.

I enjoy them with her...but I particularly love this book as it is humorous and appealing even to the adult reader...

My daughter loves seeing the sideline characters (underneath the flaps) who try to warn Little Red Riding Hood about the wolf...

I can't imagine why everyone doesn't give it five stars...

It's a wonderful way to spend loving and educational time with your baby.

A Gentle Version--just what I was looking for!

This is the perfect version of the familiar tale if you're looking for a gentler version. I think it's a good way to familiarize the youngest children with the story without scaring them. The little animals under the flaps who try to warn Little Red Riding Hood are amusing also. The illustrations are rich in color and very appropriate.

Ann's style makes it easy to navigate the often-difficult world of baby and toddler dining. She covers these topics much better than other books.

Ann Douglas gives practical nutrition and allergy pieces of advice and more--sprinkling her books with fantastic and real stories of other moms. She doesn't preach and does allow for the discussion of alternative and natural choices, such as vegetarianism.

This book is a great companion to her other works, such as "Sleep Solutions".

As a new Mom of a baby approaching the "solid foods" age, I found this book to be very useful. Specifically, I really liked the concise approaches in the book (generally in table format) in the areas of 1) what foods to introduce and suggested general orders, 2) what foods to avoid until given points in time (egg whites, honey, etc..) and 3) how to change textures and introduce new foods as you approach an older baby/toddler.

I liked the fact that the approach was "open" in that I don't need to follow as rigid a timeline or schedule as I may have found from other sources. The tips and quotes from other Mom's also made the book unique - afterall, I consider other Mom's to be experts at this point!

As a new Mom, I don't have alot of time to read - so I found this easy to read and quick/concise....easier than pulling the information out of multiple other sources. The other great part is where the author gives links to various sources for further info such as baby recipes etc... I also look forward to utilizing the baby food calendar that the author supports through her website.

I would definately recommend this book to other new Moms that are trying to figure out the "solid food" thing!

If you want advice on handling the specific issues with toddlerhood, try reading Brazelton's Touchpoints series. There are actually chapters devoted to each pertinent issue.

This book is a window into the mind of a toddler. I highly recommend it!

I liked the format, but was disappointed in that there really wasn't much advice on handling the "problems" when they surfaced. I really respect Dr. Brazelton and his child-rearing philosophies, but this book didn't really help with the frustrations that are sometimes overwhelming in parenting a toddler.

incredibly insightful

Review Date: 2003-12-01
I found this book a facinating read; hard to put down. It gives insights into BOTH toddler and parent behavior in a very readable format; through case senarios. In a "he says--she says" style, I find myself identifying with the parental concerns (wanting to scream and hide you head under the covers, crying for YOUR mother) and learning what the kid wants (attention, attention, attention).

I understand what the previous reviewer was saying...there is no specific chapter for toilet training or food issues. But there are enough books out there that cover those basic topics. This book instead probes into the mind and psychodynamics of the toddler-parent relationship. Very interesting, a fun read if you are going through this stage with your child.

Practical Advice!

Review Date: 2001-01-30
This is an easy to read, practical book for the parent of a 3-4 year old. It offers easy to read information without the drudgery of tons of reading. I think Parent Magazine is fabulous, having subscribed to it for many years myself. I'm so pleased to see that they are giving the best of what they have to offer in this book. As a behavior specialist and author of The Voucher System Behavior Management Program, I have spent a great deal of time and effort looking for a book that addresses the challenges and questions that often arise with a four year old. (Children are learning so much at age four and need a great deal of parent/child interaction. It's also the age where they learn that "no" really means "no".) This book is my choice for the best most concise book on children of this age. I highly recommend it! I also recommend the book that follows this one on the 5-6 year old.

The book was well-written and easy to read. There were concrete examples of expectations during this age. Each section also had a short piece that was written from the child's perspective. I found this technique effective and it helped to further illuminate the issues that were being discussed. Overall, the book helped me to gain a better understanding of what my 3 1/2 son is experiencing at this stage in his life.

This is a great book for the on the go parent. It is very easy to read (great for the treadmill). It gives you an idea what your 3-4 is feeling in a child's voice. I have suggested it to all my friends who wonder if their kid is "normal".

Beverly Stokes beuatifully captures the first 12 months of several normal boy and girl babies. She skillfully reveals how play drives the child to move from total dependence to a social walker/talker. This is a very powerful book to teach new parents and health care professionals the importance of play on the tummy, on the back, and on the side. She shows through pictures the importance of being able to overcome gravity from the head to the feet-a baby's first year work.

Amazing insight about amazing babies!!

The author provides the reader with a profound insight that needs to be shared by everyone that cares about their babies movement development, health, and well-being! Parents and caregivers alike will find out how much they can influence and promote their babies development by being active role models and moving with their babies right from the beginning...a must for all new parents!

As a recent father and a person who has a great interest in spiritual issues, the title of the book attracted my attention. I have read some other titles on parenting and techniques of same, but this is truly an excellent read.

Some of the topics in the book should have been expanded (the philosophical discussion on the "picking our parents" at the end of chapter one, etc.).

Helen Hood is either a very open hearted person or a very convincing author.

I have read the book twice and I intend reading it again, and again.

Thank you for such a marvelous insight !

This book uses one woman's experience as a seasoned caretaker to illustrate how to be with children "through" there emotions, rather than attempting to always distract them away from them. One of it's primary focuses is to encourage parents not to teach that some emotions are " bad" and some good. It made me more aware of attempting to see things from my children's perspective, to value their differences, respect their incredible ability to know what they need, and to see their unwillingness to "be molded" as a blessing. I read the entire book straight through, refer back to it often and give it as a gift when I can. It is not a strict "how to". If you are at all aware, you already know "how to", this book will guide you to that.
