When I had my daughter I read this book immediately. It was very useful. Dr. Lofromento helps to keep it all simple. Her advice is reassuring, easy and direct. I highly recommmend this to any first time parent!

This book is so basic and limited that it's really not all that useful. The entries are EXTREMELY brief (a paragraph or two) for most topics - which means that I can't imagine anybody really using this book as a reference without another book to back it up.

Maybe if you're just looking for a very basic, quick read, it might be useful. But in general it's pretty lacking.

This is the information that I want the parents of my patients to have! Dr LoFrumento has achieved her goal in creating a very useful tool for new parents- no gimmicks- just plain old medically sound up-to-date information. I wish I could afford to give a copy to each newborn that I see in my practice! I do know it will be part of the my "signature" baby shower gift basket!

As a first time parent I was absolutely clueless as what to expect with the birth of my son. My husband and I felt overwhelmed with the information thrown at us at the hospital regarding his care. Simply Parenting helped us get through the tough weeks in the beginning by answering our questions and calming our fears. This book is easy to read and provides the information that you really need to know regarding your child. The DVD is quite entertaining and informative. Now that our son is 3 months old we use the Simply Parenting book and DVD so that we know what to expect in the upcoming months. I definately recommond this book to all new parents. It's a lifesaver!!!

My best friend is expecting her first child in October and I can't think of any better gift than Simply Parenting.

I am the proud Mom of a 5-month-old baby girl. When we first brought her home from the hospital, we, like most new parents, had so many unanswered questions and turned to the "experts" for guidance. After just a few weeks, my husband and found ourselves so confused and overwhelmed by all of the conflicting opinions and information that we decided to pack up all of the parenting books EXCEPT for Simply Parenting and listen to that voice alone. Dr. MaryAnn is clear, easy-to-understand and just spot on. An indispensable resource for any parent!

My husband and I are first time parents and we found the Wonder Years to be an excellent source of information. The format and lovely pictures made the book easy to digest and easy to search when we wanted more information about a particular topic. Unlike some of the other child development books that seem more like reference books, The Wonder Years was actually a pleasure to read. I highly recommend The Wonder Years to all parents.

I highly recommend this one for all parents who want to help their children develop and blossom.

The book does a great job of walking you through each of the diferent milestons and what to be on the look out for at each stage. Unlike some of the other comments, I actually prefer the grouping by activity, rather than age - It helped give me a clearer picture of the progression. I also especially liked the specific tips on how I can foster their development.

My wife and I purchased several books focused on childhood development and this one was our favorite. The fact that the publication is backed by the Am. Academy of Pediatrics gave us confidence that the information was accurate, well researched and up to date. Plus, we liked the format because it allowed us to focus specifically on areas we were concerned about with our son's development and skip those areas he was comfortably mastering - a bonus given we both have busy schedules.

I bought this book when my twins were born and loved it. I bought all the subsequent volumes, too. I now give as gifts to new moms. It may not be an "in-depth" book... there is only one sentence per page, but who has time to read a 200-page book with a newborn anyway? This is simple, quick tips that you can put to use immediately.

Just recently becoming a parent (to twins), I saw the little book and skimmed through it and thought it would be a good read and I was right. Just as the title reads, it is just TIPS, and should not be looked at as a reference manual. It had some really good tips that as a first time parent, I appreciate. There is just so much information out there that it was nice to read a book that has a clear, simple and light-hearted tone and very helpful at the same time. Pick up the book if you have a chance, even at your local library. It's entertaining and lets face it, if you are anywhere near as busy as I am with my children, this size book is all you will really have time to read anyway.

Also, I noticed that they have a new little book for each stage of your child's development, so I will be picking those up as well.

It's a cutesy little book, with some good suggestions for things, but not a reference manual as such. Each page contains a one sentence suggestion. Fun for lap reading, but not what you should purchase if you're looking for some solid detailed ideas on what to do in given situations.

I love this step by step guide to prepare yourself, spouse and unborn child for birth and your lifetime together. I particulary liked reading the inspiring stories from parents about their unborn children and I enjoy saying the poem-like prayers printed in this book. I think it's wonderful that we can start having quality time with our children even before they are born! I also think it's important to take the opportunity to positively affect a life at this most impressionable time. I truely recommend this book to any expectant parent, couples who are trying to conceive as well as anybody who would like to be a parent in the future.

I am a young person who is soon to be married. I read this book in the desire to learn more about the spiritual aspect of conceiving and giving birth to children, when that does happen. It did not dissappoint. The book contains teachings on how you can change your genes (yes, that's right!), purify your mind and focus on such beauty that it manifests in your unborn child. Also talked about using spiritual energy/holy spirit/violet flame to clear emotional, mental and physical blocks. I liked the real accounts most of all, particularly of parents who had experiences with their unborn child. An interesting book.

As a married women of 29, who wants the best for my future children, I bought this book wanting to know how to facilitate a relationship with my child's soul. This book answered many questions, and explained how to use spiritual energy and "The Violet Fire" for the good of the child's soul and physical wellbeing. This book has prayers to help you all along the way- from before conception to after birth. The initial chapters dealt with karma, reincarnation, and the mission of your child's soul. I also ejoyed the chapter about how to convey beauty and virtue through music and art. This book also explains the importance of loving communication with your unborn child, and meditation. I highly recomend this book to anyone wanting to know more about the souls who will become their children- and how to do what is spiritually, emotionaly, physically, and mentally loving of them before they are born.

Disappointed by adoption references

Review Date: 2000-05-08
I bought this book when I first became pregnant. Unfortunately, I skimmed it far too quickly. I did not realize how prejudiced the authors were toward adoption. Because this book had emphasized in its marketing the idea that an unborn child's spiritual life can be molded while in the womb, I thought that the authors would understand how vital the mother/child bond is and how both mother and child suffer when it is broken. How surprised I was to read the chapter "Chance Plays No Part in Adoption." A study is quoted stating that some adopted "children said that they had now known their biological mother or father in a past life. But they did have karmic ties" with their adopters. I thought of this quote and of the desperate longing that I had as a child to find my own natural mother. We were separated by adoption for over thirty years. After I found her, she said that she'd told me before we left the maternity home that we'd find each other one day. Perhaps it was her telling me we'd find each other that made me so doggedly pursue finding her. Whatever the reason, I can't believe that the same God that would create a child in its mother's womb would condone its separation from that mother. Adoption is a social convenience for infertile couples. To say the biological parents must give away their children to fulfill some karmic law denies the bonds between mother and child that the authors tout in the rest of the book. It's curious to me how the authors can reconcile the wonder of nature's conception with the unnatural and abusive act of adoption. Many mothers, children, and fathers have suffered because of adoption. I would hope that this book would encourage keeping mothers and children together and upholding the sacredness of motherhood instead of suggesting that some mothers are merely vehicles to give other women the illusion of having their own children. Shame on the authors for not consulting people negatively affected by adoption before presenting their views.

There are many good books on prenatal care and even education in the womb. What we liked about this book was that it focuses on the spiritual aspects of preparing your new baby for the world he or she will enter. The meditations and visualizations will help you to create a deep, spiritual bond between you and your baby.

This kit comes with four items:
.
Parent Guide Book - This book contains information about development and learning in infants. It is very well organized and easy to read but the information is mostly just statistics. The few explanations that are offered are oversimplified. As a parent I am not looking for complex scientific theories (I probably would not understand them anyway) but I would like to know the 'whys and hows' of my child's development. There are many books out there that deal with infant development and if you really want to get into that you would be better off consulting those. What I did find extremely disappointing in this book were the recommended activites to stimulate your child. For example, the authors recommend that you make faces at your child, sing songs, give your child a rattle, play peek-a-boo, play pat-a-cake. Is there a single parent in any culture in the entire world that does not do all this intuitively? I was expecting something a little more ground-breaking. If you are looking for new games to play with your child I recommend "Baby Minds" by Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn. It is full of much more fun and interesting games to play with children from newborns to three year olds.
.
Toy Buying Guide - Again, you don't really need this. Your common sense will suffice. The authors recommend a mobile, crib mirror, balls, blocks, stacking rings, nesting cups and all the other regular toys I am sure every child has in his/her toy box. They do tell you what kind of balls, blocks, and rings to buy and how to extend the life of the toy, which is a bit more interesting.
.
Baby Photo Rhyming Book - Although I read to my child several times a day, I haven't really had a chance to use this yet. It is just a simple photo album with rhyming cards that you insert. I think it would be a better idea to make one for yourself with your child. It would be easy enough and would be so much more personal for the both of you. My son is only four months old and already loves books and I do plan on using this (in addition to making one). I am hoping he will enjoy both.
.
Music CD - Excellent! The only thing about this entire kit that I am truly enthusiastic about. It has the usual classical pieces by Bach, Mozart, Handel but also has world music from countries like Russia, China, Ireland. The selections are complex and rich and my baby listens attentively with eyes wide open trying to catch all the different sounds. Unlike other music geared towards children, this is something I enjoy listening too as well, and often catch myself tapping a foot. I do not plan on purchasing the next two kits, but if they sell the music CDs separately will definitely get them for my baby (and myself!).
.
I would not recommend this product. The packaging is pretty slick with words like "brilliant", "genius", and "latest brain research" which are meant to play on parents' sense of insecurity and desire to give their child the best. Chances are if you are playing, talking and reading to your baby, exposing him/her to music and toys, and hugging a lot, you are already doing everything this book says! Best of luck.

As a Forensic Psychologist I use this text and recommend it to clients to better understand and appreciate the psycho-developmental needs of their children. Of particular interest to most of those parents are the diverse tables which clarify the expected and unique behaviors of children by age group. This provides those parents with a guide book to assist them in child rearing through age 18. That reference material not only facilitates the parent's understanding of the needs of the child, but also better prepares more effective parenting skills and preparation for developmental issues which are significant in custody and visitation (or access) legal questions. Parents have reported developing a feeling of confidence since they are using scientific data in making parenting decisiions. Legal authorities -- judges and attorneys -- have felt more confident in their recommendations, opinions, and decisions which are based upon evidence. -- Swen Helge, Ph.D.

Buyer Beware - author is a PDF/Ezzo follower!

Review Date: 2007-11-22
I just received this book yesterday and was very dissappointed to read that the author is a follower of the Ezzo's PDF methods. Of the 6 books she recommends, 3 are his books. Much of her program is structured around this methods. While these methods have worked for some, many have found them to be damaging and fundamentally unsound. They are specifically discouraged many professionals. However, this is not a reveiw of that author.
That warning stated, I still give this book a 3 star rating because it does contain some wonderful ideas and recommendations outside of the PDF and the author does not judge other methods and emphasises that her ideas for this aspect of caregiving will work if you are not using PDF.
It is a quick read (physically small book as well as very short). I look forward to reviewing the authors actually work in greater detail but for now just wanted to make sure that potential buyers knew of the strong influence of PDF/Ezzo on this book and author.

This book is a must for any preschool teacher serious about incorporating ASL into classroom activities. Dennis and Azpiri write from their own experience of using ASL in the classroom, and, though neither is fluent in ASL, they share their detailed curriculum for using ASL in the classroom. Most impressive is their understanding that signs cannot be used in a vacuum, and that simply throwing signs into the classroom without an understanding of the rich and complex history of ASL would be irresponsible. Instead, they provide a context for using the language by giving a basic introduction for beginners, then providing a strong case for *why* the language should be used: to motitave and engage young learners, to match multiple learning styles, and to include children with various abilities, for a start. From the classroom teacher's point of view, the best part about this book are the copious lesson plans, on topics common to the early childhood classroom (weather, seasons, school, family, colors, community helpers, animals, feelings). These authors demonstrate that using ASL to assist in teaching about all those other topics will easily engage and enhance children's learning. --Kathy MacMillan, author of Try Your Hand at This: Easy Ways to Incorporate Sign Language into Your Programs

This book is an easy to understand approach to incorporating ASL into hearing educational venues. Its step-by-step approach is backed up by the discussion of down to earth techniques that must be employed to reach the target audience - children and their families. I like that it borrows from another culture to establish a calm, controlled environment among those who most benefit from order, structure, and discipline - our children! And they include a healthy dollop of creativity! Thanks to Ms. Dennis and Ms. Azpiri for sharing their work with the general public! It is chock full of ideas to get you started.

I am not an early childhood educator, but I am the parent of a toddler who is rapidly maxing out my sign language abilities. This book is perfect for us.

Unlike many sign language dictionaries which are intended for adults, this book includes just the vocabulary you use with small children: colors, numbers, shapes, family members, weather, feelings, behavior, and more.

Though I mainly bought the book for the signs, the lesson plans also provide some fun ideas for games to play with your child.

I am giving it four stars because some of the sign pictures are not very easy to interpret. They do have good descriptions accompanying them, but you have to already know what the "S hand" looks like, for instance. If you have some basic ASL familiarity, you can figure them out, but it might be hard for very inexperienced signers to read.

Overall, though, I highly recommend this for parents who are signing with their children!

I found myself wishing often while reading this book that there were less accounts of studies done and more actual new information and advice. The book for me read like a long string of accounts of studies of young children (and a fair amount of studies of older children and adults) and very little telling me the authors' points of view or even much tying together all the studies. However, I did find the information on language development quite interesting. I guess whether you would want to read this depends on what you are looking for. If you are a parent looking for practical advice, look elsewhere. If you are interested in the scientific study of young childrens' minds, this might be just what you are looking for.

As parents of two young children, we couldn't put the book down. We found it to be invaluable in understanding our children. The book informs the reader about the latest research on language acquisition and emotional development, and the ways in which parents can help their children develop empathy and moral awareness. It told us what to look for when we were evaluating child care arrangements, and helped us develop strategies for dealing with the everyday stresses of working parents. The writing is clear and sensitive. This is an excellent read for parents and everyone concerned with children's well-being.

Ironically, both my sons were sick when the book arrived in the mail! Dr. Natterson's book is clear and precise from ear infections to the use of anthistamines. I highly recommend this book to parents. It's a simple and straight forward reference guide on children's illnesses. I'm pleased to now have the answers at my finger tips.
Thank you.

As a mother of a toddler and a doctor who cares for toddlers and their parents, Dr. Natterson's book appeals to the mother and the doctor in me. The clear, concise, easy to understand information is accessible to those both new and seasoned in toddler issues. The book's organization by system makes it both readible as a text from cover to cover, or an excellent reference for specific questions. As the author mentions, this is a superb 'springboard' for more information, providing reputable websites for more details of each illness or condition. Dr. Natterson will answer your questions and concerns, explain what's going on with your child, and help get you through daily challenges of a parent's survival of toddlerhood.
