A Must Have

My 11-month old daughter absolutely LOVES this book! She seeks it out from a whole library of others. She delights in turning the pages herself and pointing to all of the classic toys (that most babies own and can recognize, such as stacking rings) asking "dat?" for us to name everything. The bright colorful illustrations never fail to capture her attention. My daughter would rate this book "a must have!"

Tender Care and Early Learning reinforces what we know is right and good for infants and toddlers in group care settings. It explains the High Scope Approach in an infant and toddler setting with its focus on Active Learning, Supportive Adult-Child Relationships and Arranging and Organizing the Environment. It would be a wonderful source for those interested in starting/setting up an infant or toddler classroom. It describes in detail what to include for the physical setting with checklists at the end of each chapter. Anecdotes throughout help the reader to understand how infants and toddlers respond to the environment and caregivers. Its easy - to - read format makes for an enjoyable reading experience.

This is an amazing book. It gives step-by-step instructions on library programs for children from birth to 35 months, and their parents. Davis goes into detail at first on how important the first three years of life are for cognitive development. The book is filled with, not only ideas, but actual step-by step instructions. She also includes suggested readings for each topic. Davis gives you, the librarian, a chance to be creative and add to what she already has given. This is a "must" for any chidren's library. She includes songs, finger plays and hundreds of ideas for children's programs, including holidays as well as general topics like food, weather and friends. I was especially impressed with her coverage for infants, and how they learn just by seeing their parents act out finger plays and read to them.

I taught my baby the principles of sign language using the Baby Sing & Sign book. Now I have the Toddler Sing and Sign and we love it! My family and friends are always commenting on what a great communicator my 19 month old daughter is. I'm convinced it's because of these books!

Superb reference book

As a school psychologist working with younger children, I usually find my time needs to be spent with the parents, not the children. This book is a great reference for parents and practioner alike. For parents, common problems are presented with practical solutions. For practioners, I found that it gave me wonderful insight into the mind of a toddler that I was then able to convey to parents.

Super for parent education programs!

This is the best book I've found for low-literate Spanish-speaking parents. It gives simple suggestions on how to interact with children to promote language development and be more sensitive to their needs. Each page has 3 bullet points and a cute illustration or a cartoon showing negative and positive ways to talk to your child.

Very attractive and easy to read--what more could you ask for in a parenting book!

As a first time parent, I don't always know the correct response to my 15 month old and her actions. This book has been a life saver! It is easy to read and understand. I feel as if Dr. O'Brien is talking directly to me. My favorite section is the note area at the end of each chapter. It has been very interesting to look at notes from previous months and see how much my daughter has changed. I recommend this book for any parent who wants to try and understand their toddler better! Thank you, Dr. O'Brien

A One-of-a-kind book for the Jewish baby
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-04
If you're looking for a baby book for your Jewish child or that of someone you know, take a look at Welcome Baby. Unlike typical baby books this adorable, well-illustrated book is not frilly or sappy. It reads a bit like a "real" book featuring your child. The artwork and content are very appropriate for an observant family, as this contains spaces to record Hebrew as well as English birth date, and Brit Milah, Pidyon Ha-Ben, and Baby Naming information. You can also note where baby celebrated his or her first Passover and Chanukah, which is a nice touch.

While not as dense as most volumes (which may work in its favor, since it fits easily on a normal bookshelf), this book covers all the bases for the first year. Additionally, there are places to paste photos, record the family tree, and update your baby's life story each year through age five. The last page even has spaces designated for graduation photos!

I found the fact that this looks like a regular children's book to the naked eye very appealing, and think that my son will as well. I'm sure he will appreciate being able to read about himself when he gets older, and the artwork is colorful and charming for him to admire until that time.

Welcome Baby will make a lovely, unusual gift for any Jewish child.
