Dr. Warren Willey's book is by far the best book for anyone looking to loose weight, put on muscle, or get off your medications that your poor health has got you on. I love the fact that this is not a fad diet or one that will cause your weight to yoyo. This program actually shows you how food is a drug and if used properly you can maxamize muscle gain or maintain muscle mass all while loosing fat mass, and you do it by eating normal foods. No supplements, bars, drinks, or crazy drugs, just normal healthy food. He teaches how to eat not what.

So may diets today focus on "scale weight" and Dr. Willey shows you how that can be very harmful as it is much easier to loose muscle than fat so the scale goes down but you loose muscle. Dr. Willey's book also teaches that muscle is you metabolic engine, the more you have the more calories you burn and visa versa. That is why so many people bounce back to their previous weight or higher after a diet, they killed their metabolism!

I am a professional triathlon coach and initially sought out this book to maximize my own body composition and I strongly recommend it to all my athletes regardless of if they want to drop 5 pounds of fat and put on 10 pounds of muscle or to my 250 pound female athlete that is training to just finish a sprint distance triathlon. Whatever you health goals are this book will help you reach them!

Thank you Dr. Willey!

Having put to practice Dr. Willey's suggested regimen in both diet and exercise that is outlined in his book, both personally and for dozens of my patients, I can attest to its effectiveness. What intrigues me most is the concept that this is about total body health and well being...not just a "fad" diet.
As I employ these principles taught within Dr. Willey's work and in utilizing these principles in dealing with weight loss, healthy eating habits and exercise prescriptions, I find that not only do we have positive outcomes in well being, but this empowers patients -- they recognize they have power over many of their illnesses and can manage these disease states with appropriate non-prescriptive ways, or at the very least, find that their control of their hypertension, diabetes, insulin resistance etc. with their medications is vastly improved.
One thing is certain. If the principles found within this book were acted upon we would have a healthier populace within this country. Promoted effectively, these principles should certainly replace the reliance we've recently had on such diets as the Atkin's diet.

I am a practicing surgeon and enjoyed reading Dr. Willey's book. His approach to weight loss is based on sound biochemical as well as medical principles. Rather than focusing on diet methods that require difficult to follow meal plans, starvation, total food group avoidance, etc., Dr. Willey emphasizes lifestyle changes that are easier to follow and adhere to, and do not lead to organ system breakdown and overload---things that are all-too- commonplace with certain popular fad diets. Reading his book gives one the opportunity to not only learn the proper foods to eat, but probably more importantly, the correct timing of meals and exercise to allow safe, effective and lasting weight loss and total body fitness.

His diet plans and teachings allow all people willing to participate the opportunity to regain self-respect, self-esteem and to see amazing results without trying dietary restrictions that leave people looking for the next 'miracle diet'. Proper application of good eating habits as well as tolerable exercise regimens allow all readers the ability to safely achieve their weight loss and fitness goals, while still being able to have 'vacation days' and not give up all favorite snacks.

I personally agree with the lessons learned by reading this insightful book and highly recommend it to all those who seek a very achievable level of fitness and health. Dr. Willey practices what he preaches!!!!!!

The most practical, informative, and entertaining (I'm not kidding) book I've found on perimenopause and menopause. Dr. Love tells you what you may (or may not) experience, without committing a "one-experience-fits-all" blunder. I enjoy her social commentary regarding American attitudes toward women, aging, and aging women. It's especially helpful to me as I near this second puberty.

Women and men of all ages would probably benefit from reading Chapter Two alone. The pharmaceutical companies are not (necessarily) your friends.

Good stuff.

Betty Kamen's book is an intelligent, insightful, and well-written overview of the world of hormones and health.

Taking issue with the tendency of physicians to over-use estrogen as the answer to women's problems, Kamen demonstrates, with clear scientific evidence, that natural progesterone is actually the hormone we should be using.

Betty Kamen's book is easy-to-read and highly informative on every aspect of the subject of female functioning and hormones. Her conversational style and the many illustrations made this scientific book read like a novel! Highly recommended - whether you're having menstrual problems or are menopausal. progesterone is actually the hormone that needs supplementation.

I highly recommend this book to all of my customers.

Betty Kamen has written an easy to read reference to women's hormones, how they work, what they do, and how to naturally enhance hormone deficiencies. You'll even get a chuckle here and there :)Did you know that "For reasons not understood, age at menopause is significantly ealier among left-handed women than those who are right-handed." Read on!

What Your Doctor Won't Tell You

Review Date: 2004-11-01
Betty Kamen has written a great book about estrogen, progesterone, PMS, menopause, and osteoporosis, which was based on research. Betty states, "Impressive evidence now validates beyond a doubt that progesterone, progesterone-like extracts, and certain herbs can correct a deficiency which is proving to be the real cause of PMS, the real cause of menopausal symptoms, the real cause of osteoporosis." Most doctors treat their patients by writing prescriptions for drugs manufactured by the major pharmaceutical companies, which in this case may be synthetic estrogen. One problem with synthetic estrogen pills or tablets is that only a fraction will be absorbed by the body because of "first-pass" removal of foreign hormones by the liver. These synthetic estrogens have also been shown in many research studies to increase the risk breast cancer and other forms of cancer. Your doctor is unlikely to tell you about the benefits of the natural progesterone which cannot be patented by the pharmaceutical companies. Progesterone is an important building block in estrogen production, and when progesterone levels peak in the menstrual cycle, there will be 140 times more progesterone than estrogen. Diosgenin, which is a Mexican yam extract, has been made to match natural progesterone exactly. It is safe and when used in a transdermal or cream form does not have the "first-pass" liver problem. The application of natural Diosgenin in a cream base with other synergistic herbs has shown incredible success as a hormone replacement therapy.

I am the author of The Estrogen Answer Book which was expressly written because women all over the world are seeking answers to their most-pressing midlife health question, which is "Should I take estrogen?"

In searching for clear answers I reviewed every kind of estrogen on the market today, both pharmaceutical and phyto (or plant.) I talked to hundreds of experts and, more importantly to thousands of women, to learn about the benefits, risks, fears, and concerns, and to try to cast a clear beam of light through a chaotic and confusing subject.

I believe The EStrogen Answer Book meets that goal. As quoted on the jacket,

"With her signature clarity, compassionate voice, and authoritative style, Ruth Jacobowitz has written a long-overdue goldmine of information. For the the millions of women in hormonal confusion, The Estrogen Asnwer Book is the definitive resource. I can't wait to recommend it to every woman I know?" Debra Waterhouse, MPH. RD author of Outsmarting the Midlife Fat Cell.

"The Estrogen Answer Book guides women through the maze of issues and questions regarding hormone replacement therapy and menopause. This is an extremely well-written reference for women who are about to enter menopause, as well as for those who are who are frustrated and confused by the myriad of treatment options. Ruth Jacobowitz has provided a valuable resource for the growing number of women experiencing menopause."

R. Jeffrey Chang, M.D.

Director, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology Department of Reproductive Medicine, UCSD Medical Center

These are just a couple of comments that represent advance praise for this book that have come in from professionsals everywhere. The Estrogen Answer Book may help you answer the question for you, "Should I take estrogen?"

All the answers, to all the estrogen questions, in one book!

Ruth Jacobowitz's book 150 Most Asked Questions About hormone replacement therapy answer all the questions you'll ever have about estrogen and hormone replacement therapy. As the founder and creator of HotFlash! the online perimenopasue/menopause support group and website, I'm constantly doing research about about the latest in hormone replacement therapy. During my interview with Ruth it was clear that she really has done her homework about this very important topic. She addresses all women's concerns- will HRT cause breast cancer? should I take it and for how long? The book is like a good friend seemingly to know the most pressing questions and more precisely the answers. I strongly recommend this book for any woman considering any type of estrogen therapy and more importantly for any woman who has yet to consider this therapy.

Any library seeking a comprehensive coverage of hormone replacement therapy needs THE ESTROGEN ELIXIR: A HISTORY OF HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY IN AMERICA. It describes both the medical and sociological spread of HRT theory and practices in this country, exploring how science and society shaped the idea and distribution of HRT and how medical discoveries on women's health and aging changed initial ideas. From pharmaceutical manufacturers and government regulators to feminist health activists and the media, chapters offer wide-ranging surveys of influences and changes which are key to understanding the science, history and promotion of HRT in this country.

I came across this book while preparing to write my own book on the topic. I read it hoping to find shoddy work that I might improve upon, or huge unanswered questions that I might address. Too bad for me, Elizabeth Watkins has excellently covered most of the topics I intended: a social history of hormone discovery and medical replacement, the role of interest groups (medical, pharmaceutical, media, women's movement) in shaping cultural notions of menopause and its "treatment," the scientific evidence for estrogen's effects, and the promotion of estrogen replacement. The big issue, of course, is how Medicine (and its surrounding institutions) reversed itself so completely from widespread promotion of routine long-term estrogen replacement for nearly all menopausal women, to only short-term treatment for the relatively few women with severe menopausal symptoms. The highly-publicized pivot point was the cessation in 2002 of the Women's Health Initiation (WHI), a large experimental study that showed increased heart disease and breast cancer among estrogen users. This led to an abrupt decrease of prescription and use. (Though not covered in the book, there followed a drop in the U.S. breast cancer rate, possibly a consequence of the drop in estrogen users.)
If the book has a weakness, it is Watkins's regard of the WHI as the "gold standard" of research, as if it has definitively put to rest the major questions about estrogen therapy. Perhaps if she were writing ten years later, she would give more relevance to the scientific limitations of the study. Possibly, too, the publicity rush of 2002 produced an overweighting of risk factors compared to the benefits of estrogen replacement -- an issue not yet fully resolved.

I recommend this book for any woman who is considering Hormone Replacement Therapy. It provided me with easy to understand answers to the questions my doctor never took the time to explain fully.

I especially appreciated the section on how to alleviate menopausal symptoms. I, like many other women my age had been suffering from what I considered to be severe hot flashes. This book let me know that what I was experiencing was common. It also gave me a clear understanding of what causes hot flashes and recommendations on how I can reduce my discomfort, and even how to prevent them altogether.

I highly recommend this book for women entering this phase of their lives and also for the men who love them.

Thank you.

If the Women's Health Initiative made you reluctant to prescribe hormone therapy, think again. And if you happen to be a lady doctor of a 'certain age,' you'll think a whole lot better if you're taking estrogen yourself.

These doctors have compiled an awesome archive of research on hormones and brain function. This body of knowledge from studies on neurons in petri dishes, animal brains, and women proves that the Women's Health Initiative Memory Study (WHIMS) has no relevance to decision making for our patients now facing the menopausal transition and beyond.

You owe it to your patients to pick-up a copy; the price for a used copy is a steal!
