Kathi's Mental Health Review
After 25 years I reclaimed my life because of this book..Review Date: 2008-05-26
Vakin is brilliant, and the book is written in such a way, you learn the concepts, I mean really know them. Very few people can teach, Vakin is in that select minority. He just states the facts, and mindset of the Narcissis in every conceavable presentation. By the middle of the book, you get the answer N's live to make you hurt, and miserable, they think it's funny when you are in pain. Noone could read this book without a life changing epiphany. Thankfully by the end you know your N has pulled your dress over your head, in private and public, he is sadistically gleeful and you can no longer live in the illussion that a relationship could work. Bravo

I researched a lot of books on Narcissism before I chose Vatkins. Compared to Vatkins all the others seemed like "just skimming the surface". There is no two ways about it; his is an excellant book.
One thing to keep in mind when reading this book, or his website; is that Vatkin is a narcissist, and I felt his gloating was evil when he remarked about women coming to him for help, even knowing what he is. There are some things he says that makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Also, when reading the book, sometimes I questioned what he had to say because as a narcissist he seems to direct his advice, of course, from a narcissistic viewpoint, so his advice seems to favor the narcissist at times. Also, the advice he gives sometimes in one part of the book is very different in another part of the book - almost opposite. So, though he has a lot of good to say, weigh his advice before applying it to your own life.

an odyssey of failing memoryReview Date: 2008-09-08
With dire predictions of the continued increase of dementia in the coming years, this is a must read. The author tells of her own struggle with the onset of memory problems in her early forties an how she deals with it. She tells us it's not just the memory loss but the axiety that comes with it. Because of her profession and contacts she was able to do the research and get the help that she needed. She writes about this search with tremendous sensitivity and insight.
I continue to reread parts of this wonderful book and highly recommend it to everyone over the age of thirty, dealing with the onset of their own dementia or a caregiver for someone with this terrible desease.

A Must Read for Those Interested in How the Brain WorksReview Date: 2008-06-01
Chock full of valuable information and presented in a highly readable style this book will take its place on your reference shelf for frequent revisits as it has mine.
What is especially extraordinary about Ramin is that she is completely honest about the results of what she calls a series of "Interventions" into the world of improving brain power. For
instance she finds that meditation doesn't work for her. Hallelujah! It doesn't work for me either. At last someone I could identify with instead of wondering what was wrong with me.
Ramin's journey through the research into the brain and the methods and drugs used today to help with problems is fascinating, educational and a great read.

Dr. WeekesReview Date: 2008-04-30
and trendy motivational products, Dr. Weekes goes right to the heart of the matter: that people suffering from panic attacks don't do so because of defects in their personalities, but because they've been sensitized to certain situations. Dr. Weekes helps us learn techniques to get past that sensitivity.
Her genius was in understanding exactly what her audience was going through emotionally. I've never heard any other doctor speak with such empathy. And by her example, she teaches us to be patient with ourselves while we're getting better.
I usually HATE self-help materials, but I love Dr. Weekes' work. She's one of my heroines.

Valuable Insights & Page Turning Thriller!Review Date: 2005-10-15
This book is well suited to the addict in recovery, the addict looking for help and the therapist looking for insight into the world of addicts.
Kudos to Prin for his unique honesty that is so helpful for all addicts looking for validation that they aren't the only ones with the problems they face.

This story rings trueReview Date: 2005-05-15
STOLEN HOURS tells the autobiographical life journey of John Prin, Upper Midwest baby boomer: A man who is `normal', functional and `happy' on the outside, yet secretly enslaved by inner demons of drugs, alcohol, pornography and disillusionment within. It took Prin many decades to start freeing free himself from unhappiness, dysfunction and self-loathing; and I suspect the process continues to this day. Although his Christian faith played a strong role in guiding his path to enlightenment, his autobiography is definitely a page-turner... and will ring true... to all secret keepers, those of all faiths or no faith at all. STOLEN HOURS speaks to everyone, and resounds with new life and possibility. Read it now-it's a fast, compelling book that will have you responding, "Yes! And yes... and yes. Me too! And now I understand why". And then you the reader, like I, will be waiting eagerly for Prin's next book.

Hits the Mark! A Must-Have for the AD/HD BookshelfReview Date: 2005-03-13
The author breaks up the book into three main sections, or journeys: The Crisis of Understanding, The Crisis of Identity, and the Crisis of Success. She gently walks the reader through each stage, offering insights and gems of wisdom. Each chapter ends with an "Exploration"- a short self-help exercise to help you think more about how you can use the material in a personal way for self-growth.
Both practical, sensitive and emotionally packed with wisdom from this pioneer in the field of AD/HD, I highly recommend this not only to those touched by AD/HD, but to those who work with them.

Informative and usefulReview Date: 2007-08-11
He then offers a ten step plan for prevention of memory loss, which consists of proper diet, as well as daily physical and mental exercise. Some nutrients that have been found useful for better functioning of the brain are blueberries, spinach, and other fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, almonds and other nutrients rich in vitamin E, less salt in diet, as well as general nutrition that contributes to low cholesterol and normal blood pressure. High blood pressure and high cholesterol seem to be detrimental to memory. He further suggests cutting the quantity of food people consume, perhaps in half. Fasting is good. Daily physical exercise envigorates the entire body including the brain. As as the saying goes "use it or lose it", constant mental stimulation, learning new things, solving puzzles, challenging oneself intellectually in different ways through reading or even calculating totals in one's head when grocery shopping are all helpful to keep the brain active and in good shape throughout one's life.

What Majid Fotuhi told me.Review Date: 2008-09-04
He gave me a passionate account of his tests of rats involving adding blueberries to their diets. He said the results were phenomenal and that his family has a serving of blueberries with their breakfast most mornings. He recommended that I do the same.
He's a very impressive man and I suggest you see him live if you ever have the opportunity.

Will I get Alzheimer's Disease?Review Date: 2006-08-19
Dr. Fotuhi says that of the many who fear they may get it, only a
very few will get it.
He describes our brain in a very interesting fashion. He explains how our brain stores our memories, and, what amazes me,
how the brain knows what to store. We all know what we were doing when 9/ll happened. We certainly don't remember what we
were doing on Sept. l0!
It is a fascinating read and teaches us a lot about the brain,
and how to protect ourselves from memory loss, about advances
that are being made toward a cure.
An easy book to read-not too scientific.
