What an intimate and often painful look at a person whose life revolves around a scale! Lee has me, a lifetime thin person, feel an empathy for people with a weight problem. I think he's very brave in baring his soul the way he does in his memoirs. I found myself routing for Lee and his goals, both personal and professional.

I decided to buy this book Exodus from Obesity, as I had heard about it from a friend. Once I started reading I found I was unable to put it down. It was very clearly written and helpful in so many ways. It gives you very specific actions to follow both before and after weight loss surgery.

After reading Exodus from Obesity I felt a whole lot better about my own decision to have this surgery. This book is a must read for those people who are considering gastric bypass surgery, have had the surgery, or for those who know someone who has.

Once you read this book you will have gained pracital, useable tools which will ultimatley make you feel so much better. If you decide to buy this book, it will give you piece of mind, and help you through this process no matter what stage of it you are in.

If you have any unanswered questions or are unsure of what questions to ask, then definitely buy this book.

Fat Gone, Feelings On

Applause to Paula Peck for a valuable guide that completes the journey toward whole person wellness. Her Guide completes the intangible spectrum of our relationship to food and feelings that many of the profit-making, medical systems leave out. Paula addresses the big-hit surprises and potentially destructive manifestations of body image change, sexuality, and resentments toward fat prejudice, just to name a few. She emphasizes what's possible and how to handle the range of "surprises" on going with humour, wisdom, and empathic understanding. I'm a person, who has recovered from obesity, but not the attraction to food-as-love and comfort. Thank you, Paula, for emphasizing the lifetime hold this challenge has; and the lifetime dedication it takes to succeed post-op. I've been facilitating groups and doing individual consultation for almost 15 years with clients/patients, who have found the promise of life renewed with gastic bypass and other weight-loss surgical procedures. Then, the fantasy fog (I'm a San Franciscan) lifts. The pounds creep back, along with severe self-blame, self-humiliation, and shame. Powerlessness to control the "slide", isolation, and ultimately depression. Why? The "rennovation" takes place on the outside; but the heart, soul, and emotions are never addressed...until now. I've recommend this book to my clients; and even keep one in the waiting room of our professional group. It's ongoing support strategic, compassionate support in print.

I have been trying to gain as much information and insite to the Gastric Bypass I am going to have and how I got here. This book is very good. It has assignments at the end of chapters to do things like "write a "Dear Me" letter" pre-surgery to read later and see how far you have come.
It does deal with a lot of pre-op. Not a whole lot post op. But maybe since I'm pre-op I am not picking up on the post op so much.
She's very candid and this being the 3rd book I've read on the topic has things to say that I have no read before and I'm glad I did.

I have had a restrictive-only weight loss surgery (much like the Lap-Band) & find the calorie counts of these recipes to be quite a bit more than I am comfortable with. Based on the ranges of calories, a person would be fairly restricted to 3 meals a day. I subscribe to the theory that one is more successful, satisfied & less inclined to graze if one eats smaller, less calorie-dense meals more often throughout the day, say every 2-3 waking hours. Much has been written regarding this issue as it relates to by-pass patients & I understand that with their altered GI tracts this may not be the best recommendation but I feel for restrictive-only patients frequent small meals is a better choice. Maybe the recipes can be tweeked to reduce the amount of olive oil or other high calorie ingredients.

This cookbook has some new twist that I like alot. The recipes for different protein drinks is GREAT! The dessert section has quite a few recipes that have a lot of sugar.
I know everyone has different needs and tolerances but, there need to be some type of warning when lots of sugar is used.

I have found this book to be fabulous, and I'm not really one for cooking. I've been intimidated for years about cooking "soul food", but not anymore. This book has opened up a new world of easy to follow recipes, that clearly list all of the ingredients and directions. It has taken the guess work out of "how to", and allows even the beginning cook to appear as a seasoned chef. I purchased the book after hearing rave reviews from my friends, and I'm definately glad that I did. Since having gastric bypass surgery, this book has taught me that, I don't have to give up my favorite foods, and I can even make them myself. Well done!

The remainder of the book is a well written, easy to read and understand explanation of what every weightloss surgery patient needs to know to be successful. Katrina explains everything so well, recommends foods, portions, nutrients, as well as exercise. As I approach my own weightloss surgery date coming up soon I plan to have this at my side! Katrina has put together a terrific guide to stay healthy and successful after weightloss surgery!! Thank you so much Katrina and Jerry!!

The cultural mainstream has become petrified by clinging to fixed ideas and rigid patterns of weight loss behavior. This author is a member of the creative minority who will carry on the process of challenge and response. This small book introduces it's readers to how our emotions and our physical body inter-relates. It's a great beginners guide to this author's journey through weight loss and spiritual enlightenment.

Review Date: 2002-07-04
As with her other book, "The Magic Pill," this book has one basic and useful premise. That insight is interesting, but not worth the price of the book. The problem is that the material for one paragraph has been turned into an entire book.

Everything I've said in my review of "The Magic Pill" applies here. Ms. Holtzclaw would not have passed my junior English class. Moreover, as someone who has since had RNY and dealt with the issues surrounding it, I don't find her premise to be at all universally applicable. If you want one good guide to weight loss surgery, there are better choices.

I have purchased and read many books on the topic of Gastric Bypass surgery this is by far the worst. I would strongly advise you against reading this if you are Pre-Op, as it will make you feel like a complete failure. I felt like I should have been going to a 12 step program instead of getting Gastric Bypass surgery. I feel very bad for anyone else that might become infected with this authors "Glass is always empty" thought process. Please do yourself and some trees a favor and DO NOT READ OR BUY THIS BOOK!

This book was totally useless to me

Review Date: 2002-06-27
I bought this book pre-op, and at 6 months out, I can truthfully say that it was a complete and utter waste of money. The author seems to believe that all morbidly obese people are completely [messed up] in the head and losing the "crutch" of overeating is going to cause all our demons to come surging forth to wreak havoc. Well, sorry to disappoint you, Ms. Holtzclaw, but the only demon plaguing me was a metabolism that was [messed] up from years of yoyo dieting. OF COURSE this is not brain surgery...DUH (and by the way, I am hard pressed to imagine a more condescending and insulting title for a book like this). But I've got news: most of us don't NEED brain surgery; what we need is a tool that will keep our bodies from sabotaging all our efforts to lose weight and keep it off. Gastric bypass has given me that, and the only emotional challenge I have faced is adjusting to my success. (And believe it or not, pre-ops, that IS a challenge, albeit a fun one. *grin*) To anyone planning to have weight loss surgery, my recommendation is to give this book a pass and save the money to help pay for the new clothes you're going to need in a few months.

Review Date: 2008-05-21
I really enjoyed this book. Unlike some other reviews I don't think that she came across snobby or stuck up or full of herself. I think she came across as a woman who had finally gained confidence and was finally getting a chance to experience life! Yes, she has money and therefor has the means to travel and go shopping and throw parties, but that shouldn't be a reason to not like this book. Susan Leach worked hard to achieve her goal, and I think her story was very inspiring. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because I wish the book had been longer. Half of the book is recipes and I think she should have maybe only had 1/3 be recipes, and then most of the book devoted to her weight loss story. I think the only reason people don't like this book is because they are jealous of her life style. But I for one, really enjoyed it and it inspired me a great deal. I recommend it.

A Very Entertaining & Educational Book

Review Date: 2008-01-17
My sister gave me a copy of this book several months after I had
bariatric surgery and I found I was able to relate to many of the
experiences that the author captured in this book. I particularly
enjoyed the author's positive outlook and encouraging way of conveying
even the negative aspects of having such a life altering operation
because not everything about having a Roux-En-Y operation is pleasant.

I did not read the recipes she provided simply because my wife is Czech
and does not allow me to cook anyway, but I am sure they offer some
great ideas for those people finding it challenging to supplement their
new diets with some good and healthy things to eat.

It has now been nine months since I had my operation and I am down to
192 lbs from a beginning weight of 332 lbs. As an engineer, and thus
one that enjoys torturing data to a confession of what transpired, the
one thing I would like to have seen the author include was some data
documenting her progress following her operation. I guess I will just
have to keep documenting my own progress and write my own book of
experiences.

On the whole, this is a very good book for someone considering bariatric
surgery or anyone close to someone considering bariatric surgery to
read. Prior to having my surgery I read a lot of factual information to
gain a thorough understanding of what to expect. In retrospect, it
would not have altered or influenced my decision to have the surgery,
but I am sure I would have appreciated reading this book beforehand if
for no other reason than to reinforce the positives of having the
operation and hear about it first-hand from the perspective of someone
that had gone through it. Sure, I read many testimonials, both pro and
con, but none written as a journey of emotions, disappointments,
failures, and successes through the changes experienced leading up to
and following having the procedure done like this book captures.

There is a lot more to consider than the obvious and this book does a
good job either directly or indirectly - of pointing out many aspects
that one should evaluate before making such a life changing decision.
It is definitely worth reading and will certainly give you at least a
few things to think about.

This book was recommended to me by my personal therapist because she wanted to know my opinion of the book. It is wonderful to read a book written by a therapist who has been through the surgery and used the gastric by-pass procedure as a tool, not the cure.

Anyone who reads this book and says that she is not saying anything new is in denial. We obese folks (myself included) do not like to hear what she has to say. A lot of this book is geared toward helping people let go of the habits and the anger that created our health problems.

As far as I am concerned, Dr. Holtzclaw is right on the money. I did not become 200 pounds overweight overnight. Developing the mindset to keep 200 pounds off is not going to happen overnight. I am only 1 year out from my by-pass surgery and I feel that I am in the most vulnerable time of my recovery from obesity.

The issues are complicated and different for each person but the "magic pill" is still the same. There is no "magic pill" for personal integrity. I will re-read this book several times in the next few years. This book has helped me focus on what I need to do for success.

This book is so disappointing! It is terribly written, much more like a pamplet than a book. There is so little information that the book contains a 2 inch margin at the top and bottom of every page, plus repeats the complete name of the book and author on every page, then also has many pages that are almost completely blank! The 107 pages could easily be covered in 25 pages, but even then it would not be worth reading!

Needed a proofreader!

It is unfortunate that Holtzclaw's important message is lost in such a mess. The main problem with this book is that it is so riddled with spelling, gramatical and punctuation errors, that it is impossible to read without becoming irritated. Did she not have an editor? Didn't anyone bother to actually read through the manuscript before sending it off to a printer? Also, there is not enough substance here for a book in the first place and the author ends up saying the same things over and over again to fill up the pages. I found this to be a very frustrating read on many levels and I'm sorry I wasted my money on such an amateur effort!
