This is an amazing and easy to use book that gives the experience of taking a workshop on how to sit, stand, bend sleep and walk correctly. It is beautifully written, has wonderful pictures and is a clear guide to a healthier way of living with your body. It requires some time and motivation but if you have that this book can help you to rethink all your movements. I am a Tai Chi Instructor and an ESL teacher. This book, and I've only had it for two weeks, has changed the way I walk, sit, stand and sleep. I am even changing some basic things in my Tai Chi set. I feel fortunate to have this book. I took one lesson with Esther in person and it helped tremendously, but only because I had studied her book so carefully before I went to see her. My presenting problem is pain in the heel of my right foot. I am very encouraged by all the exercises she presents as well as the new way to walk. Everything that is presented is not strenuous or complicated. It just takes practice. Ester's book provides a great service to modern man.

8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back: Natural Posture Solutions for Pain in the Back, Neck, Shoulder, Hip, Knee, and Foot (Remember When It Didn't Hurt)

Esther Gokhale uses ancient methods to treat a modern problem. Especially for people who spend a lot of time on the computer, back pain is a wide-spread problem. Esther's solution focuses on posture, taking cues from cultures that never experienced back pain. I first learned about her work when she exhibited her photographs of women in Africa, India, and elsewhere with the "right" posture in a gallery in Palo Alto. Her approach is unique and widely endorsed by orthopedic experts.

After reading this book and employing the techniques I am stronger, straighter, and healthier. If I start to experience back twinges I can track them to my poor posture (long airplane rides, sitting in overstuffed chairs, being in a hurry when I walk/hike and forgetting to pay attention to my shoulder & spine position, etc.). When I make a correction with the techniques described in this book, my pain disappears. Overall, it took less time than I would have thought to shift into good posture habits. The effect is very reinforcing and there is something intuitive about standing and sitting properly. It's as though my body takes over and remembers how it is supposed to be used.

Excellent investment; these methods work!

This is an excellent book for learning how to avoid and alleviate chronic body pain, including back, neck, and knee pain. Gokhale's methods are based on scientific principles and anthropological studies -- and clearly a lot of research. The book provides a detailed description of ideal posture and gives in-depth instructions on proper techniques for standing, sitting, walking, bending, and sleeping to avoid pain. Exercises and stretches to facilitate the methods are included. The explanations are clear and concise and supplemented with numerous excellent photos and illustrations. I found Gokhale's teachings easy to follow and, most importantly, have been able to easily and consciously incorporate them into my daily life. These methods work! The book is beautifully presented and a joy to read. I highly recommend this book.

I think the book is based on solid theory, but it is very difficult to explain, even with numerous pictures, the proper postures in a book. This book is based on a hands-on class. It is like reading instructions on how to ride a bicycle.

I'm training for the Breast Cancer 3Day walk -- 60 miles in three days -- and stumbled across this book during an internet search for blister prevention and cures. I got a copy right away. I have never before participated in any endurance sports and needed as much good advice as I could find and believe me, this book delivered. Certainly, there are parts of it that don't apply to my current activities, however the quality of the information, the helpful references to products and where to access them, and clear instructions in foot care have saved me countless blisters so far. I love the focus on prevention. The section on duct tape was particularly intriguing and helpful for me. I'm telling all my fellow distance walkers about this book!

Have you ever hiked or ran and ruined your feet? Have you ever felt discouraged about your feet, didn't know what to do about it or, most importantly, what to do the Next Time?
Then Fixing Your Feet will be the answer to your prayers. No one else addresses the myriad problems that can arise when your feet are stressed to the max. John Vonhof leaves no stone unturned, pun intended, in this most thorough book about foot problems such as blisters, corns, structural problems. He deals with prevention as well as treatment. It's not just His viewpoint. He has interviewed countless athletes, hikers and endurance runners and quotes from their experiences and solutions.
He offers concrete advice with specific product recommendations and yet perhaps the best advice of all, stated over and over again, is not to take your feet for granted. They are the most important part of any trek or race you plan.
Even if you have never had any foot problems, if you are planning a hike or race, read this book and be prepared. You'll still be walking or running while others have to drop out.

I only review & critique books I actually have read, how else can you make an educated and realistic critique?

As a 19-year Ultraq vRunner I certainly had a reason to buy anmdn read this book, especially since I run now exclusively on trails.

Unless peple are into long-distance running, few people have any idea on how to fix your feet, especially prevent injutries before theu happen.

I know the author and other people who contributed to this booki and can verify their expertise in the field of running and fixing feet.
The book is very detailed, covers almost every imaginable aspect of ultra running. It covers most potential problems that can arise from teh sport and it's preventions and solutions if trouble occurs.

No ultra runner should be without this book as it could save you from lots of potential misery.

I bought this book for my husband who has always wanted to raise a small farm of beef cattle. He took the book along on our 2 week vacation to Europe and completely devoured the book! He loved it, says it's the best single book on the subject he's ever seen! He has now requested the same series for pigs. (We already have the one for chickens). Oh, our first calves will arrive in a few months!

Book is reasonably informative but about half of the book is simply on birthing cattle.....which is a skill that obviously is important, but not something that I expected in this much detail in what I thought would be more of an overview manual. So ended up being more technical and specific that I had hoped.

This book covers everything from choosing the correct shoes and injury preventing techniques to diagnosing and treating foot and leg injuries. The writer seemed very knowledgeable and he certainly helped me. With his simple advices I can run long distances again without pain and I couldn't do it in almost a year! I had no idea there are so many things that need attention when running safely. Think all runners need this knowledge.

I have read many books on reflexology - Laura Norman's amazingly comprehensive book is by far the best. Other books are either technical - aimed only at reflexologists - or pretty picture books with little substance.

Feet First is the only book which combines Laura Norman's unique techniques, a comprehensive guide to applying reflexology and other techniques to improving your life (her book takes the reader through the stages of life from pregnancy through final transition), help in addressing physical conditions we all encounter, plus beautiful illustrations. Whether your challenge is about a relationship, illness, stress at work, fertility, or any other issue you might be facing, Feet First can help.

Feet First has earned a special place on my bookshelf.

I keep it for my clients who like to hear affirmations and also as a quick reference to conditions I haven't worked on before. The quick index with pictures to each condition is the best feature of the book; it has the primary and secondary reflexes per condition and the affirmation in the last column.

Useful Detail for Learning

Review Date: 2005-04-05
Much of the book is dedicated to getting around on crutches. Under "Fitting of Crutches" Pryor states "All too frequently crutches are fitted improperly - generally too long - even by trained personnel." This is exactly what happened to me. I was nearly falling off the crutches every "swing-through" step. I fitted the crutches per instructions. By the next day I had the swing-through step down. By the next week I was successfully practising "non-weight bearing" stair climbing. This made a huge difference to me as my bedroom is on the second floor and the kitchen and living room are on the bottom floor. The detail of the book is wonderful for doing things the first (few) times. Keep re-reading. All that detail makes perfect sense when you are learning. Some of the hints are counter-intuitive and this saves you the trouble of doing it wrong or getting discouraged and giving up. I really wish the hospital had given me this book.

As a mother of a child who has SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder), I thought that this book was fantastic. My son is 11, and I never really sat down to explain to him what was going on inside his body, and how he processed and integrated his senses. This was such a help, and he loved it. It was the first time that he was so engaged that he would turn to me and say "Mom, that is just like me." I am sending him to school with it for his teachers and aide to read as well. We have known since he was 3 that he had a sensory integration issue, but most of the literature is geared for that age group, and not for the preadolescence age group. It was wonderful to actually read something that not only helped me to understand more, but most importantly, help my son understand how his body works. Carol Stock Kranowitz comes through again.

It was very interesting as the children in the story shared what activites help them get in sync. What was relaxing and what elements of the activities were useful to relaxation, organization etc. Although I did not notice the age group recomendation I will keep the book as it is useful to the parents and grandma and will become my grandson's book when it is more level appropriate. I say that because he is very advanced when it comes to stories and reading.

While my child is too young to read this book on his own, I know it will be helpful for him in the future. As a parent of a child with sensory issues, I found that it helped enhance my understanding of his issues immensely (e.g, what HE is experiencing on a daily basis and how it might make him feel). The more insight and understanding a parent has on these issues, the better you can help your child. I highly recommend purchasing it.

We borrowed this book from the library, so I didn't know what to expect, but towards the middle, I figured out what was going to happen, and got all choked up. My daughter kept turning over to me, since I had to whisper, so I wouldn't cry (my dad had recently gone through 4 months of illness which almost took his life). It definitely explains "stroke" well in simple words, deals with the emotions of the family, and discusses how to care for an ill person. It does have a positive ending, so keep that in mind, in case you're dealing with a possible death. It's very well written, tugs at the heart strings, and the important parts really come through.

Such a wonderful book! It comes at a time for our family when Grandma's health is declining. For our daughter who is nearly three, Grandma seems a bit scary, since she doesn't look and act quite like herself. When we visit Grandma, she tends to moan a bit, which is very frightening to our toddler.

This beautiful story is about a boy named Bobby and his Grandfather, Bob, who lives with Bobby and his parents. They have a lovely relationship; they spend lots of time together, building with blocks and sharing stories. Bobby especially likes for Bob to tell him the story about how Bobby learned to walk... ''Now one foot, now the other.''

When Bobby is 5 years old, Bob has a stroke, and the little boy is frightened by the changes in his grandfather. Once Bob finally gets home from the hospital, he doesn't seem to recognize Bobby. The first sound Bob tries to make ''sounds like a monster'' to Bobby, but Bobby learns to understand Bob and, through love and persistence, is instrumental in Bob's recovery.

I'm sure that this book will help my daughter to understand why Grandma isn't quite herself. Hopefully, our visits to see Grandma will be less stressful for her (and for me). After reading this story to my toddler at least dozen times (we received this book in the mail just three days ago), I can finally keep from tearing up until the very last page. I highly recommend this lovely book!

Those Aching Feet: Your Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Foot Problems is a simple guide for lay people concerning how to prevent, identify, and take care of ailments ranging from ingrown nails to warts, callouses, bunions, flat feet, and even diabetes-related difficulties. An especial section is devoted to foot problems common to athletes, such as shin splints, ankle sprains, and achilles tendonitis. Those Aching Feet does not go into great depth upon the maladies it covers; it's simply a no-nonsense guideline to the basic facts any active person needs to know, and a superb primer to brush up on good podiatric habits before visiting a health care professional. Especially recommended for athletes and those who spend most of their day on their feet.

I strongly recommend "Those Aching Feet"

Are you tired at the end of your day? Do you have to cram your feet in to "fashionable" shoes for work? Do you have to stand for long hours, or chase your child all day? According to Christine Dobrowolski, DPM, "If you can keep your feet from hurting, you'll find that you have more energy and possibly less knee an back pain. How the foot hits the ground effects: the ankles, knees, hips and back." (page 126 "Those Aching Feet") I know that I could certainly use more energy and less pain, how about you?

"Those Aching Feet," is a frank, easy to read look at common foot problems; their diagnosis, and treatment. Most of the chapters are aimed at: the average person, the elderly, and diabetics; however, Dobrowolksi has also included a special section just for athletes of all types-- even weekend warriors. The writing is clear and concise; complete with no non-sense language instead of packed with medical terms that most people can't pronounce. Diagrams with large writing are included to illustrate more clearly what ailments look like, which will aid in the process of self diagnosis in many cases. Dobrowolski also outlines situations that will require you to go directly to your doctor, and she offers readers questions to ask so that once you arrive at your physicians, you will be able to act as an informed patient.

Like most people, feet are not something I want to think about for extended periods of time. In spite of my prejudices, I found "Those Aching Feet" to be a particularly engaging and pertinent read. I strongly recommend "Those Aching Feet," to the audience at large, even if you only keep it as a reference book. Eventually, the information contained within this book's pages will come in handy!

I have a ganglia cyst on both feet, as well as other feet problems. "Those Aching Feet" described the ganglia cyst problem very clearly. AFter reading about it, I was relieved to discover that an easy solution was available. I visited my doctor and had the fluid drained.

It's a (surprisingly) easy read that seems to cover everything foot related. I give it a very high rank compared to other medical books I have read.

I am fairly athletic and through the years I have had many feet and leg problems, mostly associated with sports and running. My latest issue has been plantar fasciitis, aka heel pain. I checked out a few other books as well as talking to my regular doctor, but I was still having the pain. From the TOC in the "Search inside this book" feature on Amazon.com, I noticed that there was an entire chapter dedicated to Plantar Fasciitis, as well as an extra section in the athletes chapter. (heel pain and plantar fasciitis was reference many times in the glossary too) So I went ahead and ordered the book.

I really didn't expect much, since I already had other advice. I read the thorough descriptions of the heel pain issues and solution, and began taking care of my feet as suggested. They are already feeling much better while walking around and doing light jogging. So far, so good. It seems that I am on the road to recovery.

In addition to the heel pain section, I browsed through the rest of the book. There is a lot of information about many common feet issues in this book. I am glad I purchased it, as it will be a very useful reference for any of my future foot problems.

I can, without reservation, recommend this book to anyone with feet.

This is an excellent manual on the education and care surrounding the feet. I am a diabetic and have problems that were covered knowledgeably in this text. The scope of this book is comprehensive and the information is applicable in a wide range of foot concerns. The thing I liked most is that the average person can read and appreciate the material without having to have an extensive background in podiatry. It is very user friendly while still presenting a depth of information. Highly recommended!

A single mom with six children (five of whom are adopted), Arta has also taken in kids born with drug addiction, fleeing abusive homes, and experienced having her youngest daughter diagnosed with HIV when just two and a half months old. Drawn from Arta's personal experiences and journal recordings, Wrong Feet First is candid, emotionally moving, and a testament to the resilience and endurance of the human spirit -- as well as a celebration of the joys that balance sorrows, the power of hope, and the beauty life has to offer in even the most humble of circumstances.

I received the book on a Friday afternoon and sat down to "skim" through it. I couldn't put the book down. I sat in my reading chair in my den and read and read and read..... My husband came home and I had huge tears in my eyes, but I was smiling. He was curious and asked me what was going on. I shared just a portion of the LoveGifts contained inside this awesome book with him. When I finished reading, he immediately nabbed it for his own ejoyment. I feel like a new person. This book made me see things in a different light. I'm sure anyone who reads it will share my feelings! Go ahead! Put your "Wrong Feet First"!
