In the late '70s, an earlier version of this book changed my two-year old daughters life forever. I believe that then the title phrase was "hypoactive" instead of "hyperactive". I had an adorable, sweet, little girl that would suddenly go into uncontrollable rages. A neighbor happened to be watching the Phil Donahue show and told me about the cookbook that was discussed on the show that day. I bought it on Tuesday and by Saturday I had a new child. I explained to her that certain things were poison to her and that sugar would make her have what we called a "sugar fit". She, at age 2 1/2, became a helper in the process and would refuse any candy, etc. that was offered to her. She's now age 30, and still is careful about intake, staying aware of how foods affect her. She has never, ever had another "sugar fit". I'm looking for the book again for my son's little boy - age 2 1/2 - who has the same symptoms.

what a book! what a diet!

I am a mum from the Uk. My 17 yr old son has a diagnosis of ADHD and Asperger's syndrome. without Dr Feingold's diet my son would not have a life. He is not a straight A student, though being very intelligent. This diet helps al kids with challenging behaviours, some become straight A students and others get their lives back - either way this diet is incredible. My son would obviously prefer a meal out sometimes to his gluten free, dairy free, salicylate free diet but he knows that his behaviour will change and therefore all the things he does in life will also be affected. I really truly do not know what I would do without Dr Feingold. In the UK, his diet is not popular, it is not recommended by the experts, so parents know very little about it. If only one parent in the UK read this article and tried it, it is well worth writing it. UK mum

My son was diagnosed last year through his elementary school with ADHD and they pushed medication however I was not about to go that route until I had dissolved every other possible alternative. I purchased the Feingold Diet cookbook and surprisingly the recipies are delicious! I was skeptical at first because my son is 6 years old and I was afraid he would put up an argument to eat these foods but to my surprise we all have liked the recipes we have tried. We have only been on the diet for about 4 weeks in which we have seen some changes in behavior (I think the first couple weeks he was rebelling about having to be on a "special diet" plus when he visits his dad everyother weekend, he has gotten food not approved on the diet which sets us back a couple days). Also to our surprise, my husband has experienced positive changes in his energy level and overall general health. You are what you eat!

I have followed this cookbooks recommendations since 1983. My son is ADHD and my husband always said if you can't read it don't eat it. It definitely made a differnce in my sons actions and he is now graduating from college and we all still eat much healthier than we would have. The recipes in this cookbook are delicious and I would like to give atleast two of these for Christmas presents and I need one l for myself since whoever borrowed it never returned it to me. They must of liked it too.

This is a life changing book!

For parents of children who have been labled ODD, ADHD and other hyperactive and behaivor disorders, this book could change your lives. Dr. Fiendgold has come under critism for his ideas concerning the effect of cemicals in food and their effect on an individuals' nervious systems. When I decided to try Dr. Fiengold's diet I was desperite to help my ODD son and wanted to help him without putting him on drugs. Our whole family tried the diet for six weeks and the results were amazing! Our son is now 20 and a straight A student at the Univerisity of Wisconsin on a music scholarship! He still has to follow Dr. Feingold's guidelines for his diet, but he is a very delightful and productive young man today and has never been on drugs to control his behavior! Thank you DR. Fiengold! We love you!

Small enough to take with you to the store, yet full of info which is understandable. I keep it in my spice cabinet. One of the greatest books I've picked up.

Great little book!

I wanted a simple reference guide to take with me when I go shopping. I'm not, by any means, a fanatic about this stuff, but I want to be careful about what I feed my family. This book did the trick. It's tiny and fits in my purse and gives a brief description of the entries and a graphic symbol that make my decision quick and easy. If I have more questions about an item, there are plenty of great books out there with more in-depth answers. I use it all the time.

A great find! Recommend it to all serious dieters

This dictionary should be an essential part of every food allergic individual's home library. Simple, concise, and complete definitions assist in the indentifaction of possible hidden allergic ingredients. A great companion to take the supermarket for verifying source of unknown ingredients.

After reading "The Feel Good Handbook" (that's MSG FREE's - New Title) I realized how TOXIC I was. I started to clean out my system according to the books guidelines and "hidden sources" lists! What an incredible difference eating correctly does for your body! I've lost 48lbs!! My symptoms were as normal as the next person's (migraines, digestive problems, bloating, heartburn, anxiety, depression) after I ate a favorite meal or anything for that matter. It's been a living hell!! With the help of "The Feel Good Handbook" I've realized how sensitive I truly was to the nasty affects MSG has on my system - and everyone elses!!Thanks Annie for getting the TRUTH out about those nasty excitotoxins and "free glutamic acids" in our food supplies! Check your labels everyone - THIS IS FOR REAL!!!!!!

Incredible resource guide, up-to-date, easy to read & robust

This book finally opened my eyes to what was causing a huge amount of problems I was experiencing. Headaches, stomach problems, sleeplessness, anxiety; I thought I was going to have a heart attack once! My doctor was treating me for "stress" related disorders and I was better, however continuing to suffer only milder symptoms.

After reading the book, I carried around the "hidden sources list" with me when I went shopping. It was amazing how many of the items on this list appeared on packaged food labels! Even "fresh" items like cheese and dairy products! It took a few weeks to see improvement because we had to sort out the good from the bad in our cupboards following the books advice. Once we did, not only did my headaches and bellyaches go away, so to did my husbands! I was shocked and amazed - "one ingredient" could cause so much pain. This book is a must buy if you are MSG sensitive!

Some of the stories told in this book (in flamboyant language, no less) are absolutely terrifying, and I wonder what they would think of today's preservative-laden foods and items made from products which don't exist in nature.

I wonder what people will think of modern technology in 70 years.

Additives is an excellent book for children in the middle school level. From a brief history of additives to knowing the different types of additives, this book is filled with useful information. Ms. Nottridge includes photos, recipies, a glossary, and a metric chart to help guide kids in making healthy choices in their food selections.

I had suffered for years with allergic rhinitus (hay fever) and been dependent on sinus medication to get through each day. All the medication left me tired and made it hard to concentrate at work or study. This book has enabled me to regain a sense of wellness and to become free of anti-histamines for the first time in years. I would highly recommend it for anyone who finds that traditional medicines simply don't cure their sinus problems.

This book is an excellent resource for food allergy sufferers. It lists the main food allergy ingredients (corn, eggs, milk, nuts, peanut, soy and wheat) for over 3000 brand name products. It is must when shopping and trying out new products. Some of the ingredients listed in the book may be listed as "natural flavors" on the package, and the book lets you know what they are. I only wish they had an updated version.

Very, very impressed with this book. Written in 1990, he was way ahead of the curve in his assessments and judgements on the food industry. Last 100 pages are recipes which I have mostly made and were all good. If we are what we eat, we're all in trouble. Very enlightening. Read this in conjunction with "My Year of Meats" by Ruth Ozeki and the February, 2006, issue of "Consumer Reports".

Don't get greenwashed! Use this valuable practical book when you go shopping and you'll be shocked to learn how many products claim to be "all natural" and "environmentally friendly", but in fact are a toxic carcinogenic concoction wiping out your health and fertility and destroying the environment. You'll also be able to decipher the codes on the ingredient lists and will know what to stay away from. It's a great shopping companion!
