I finished reading this book over the weekend and it is now marked up, underlined and dog eared. Roz cuts to the heart of the matter without a lot of fluff and fru fru to wade through. It has made me look deep into some things I have avoided and with her insight and way of saying things it is all so much more clear. I have a list of friends I am going to buy copies for. I have never been one to keep a good thing to myself.. and this is one book that needs to be read by anyone and everyone. I told my boss and good friend about the book and while he can not bring himself to write out panties in a message he does write PYBGONADWI...but today he sent a reply to a "gripe message" I had sent with this DGYBGPIAW. I will let you figure it out. Read this book and put it into action. You will be oh so glad you did!

Put Your Big Girl Panties on and Deal with it---provides women with a no excuse framework that frees them up to live life authenicly and outrageously. Roz's stories are powerful and potent. They highlight the key messages in her book about how to get what you want in your life! It's about designing your life so you end up where you want to be. A great book for women of all ages!

Good But Not Great

Although this short, little book is MUCH better than many books bigger and more expensive it still had several disappointing aspects to it. I bought both this book and the tile that matches the title and they would make a great gift for a gal facing forty or any other life milestone once she was out of her twenties and early thirties. My reasoning behind that comment is all the stories of people making BAD decisions--including the author being honest herself--and then needing to dig themselves out of the pit they originally threw themselves into. We all make mistakes. But rather than a look back, why not a more insightful anticipation of making good decisions! Experience may be the best teacher, but I prefer my experiences teach me how to love, wear big diamonds and be happy. Instead of repairing my battered self and self-esteem after too many relationship mis-steps, bad job decisions, etc. Good book but a little sad at how foolish so many people can be at building their lives.

Don't miss this book

If you have been waiting to find that one book that will help you pull your life together, your lucky day has arrived. Put On Your Big Girl Panties and Deal With It is that book--one that you will hold close to your heart--my copy is dog-eared and yellow highlighted page after page. Roz Van Meter offers solid advice on how to face life as a grown-up based upon her years of experience as a life coach--and she does it with grace, charm, and a wicked sense of humor. Warning: you will laugh out loud more times than you can count. Simply put, Roz is warm, wise, and the girlfriend you have always wanted. Buy this book for yourself, give copies to your daughter and to your sisters (both bio and chosen) because this is advice you will want to share and talk over with people you really care about.

psychologically qualified yet girlfriend-friendly advice

Review Date: 2007-10-01
Have you ever had a girlfriend who just got you and could make you see that you were overreacting but would also make you feel completely at ease with your idiosyncrasies? Aren't they the best? Roz Van Meter offers her psychologically qualified yet girlfriend-friendly advice in her book, "Put Your Big Girl Panties On and Deal With It..." and it's just like having that special girlfriend by your side or a life coach with a fantastic sense of humor on speed dial.

It's a no-nonsense guide to getting what you want, but it's also a little book of inspiration to getting what you need. Roz shares her own stories to relay some messages and also those of people she knows. It's the latest thoughts on self help psychology, marriage, relationship and sex therapy, and life coaching, but it is done in such a light hearted and easy going tone that you don't realize you're getting a bigger message until it has already sunk in. The book is made light and fun by the analogy of knickers in every form and relating them to what you want in life. For instance, figuratively (or literally) putting on those practical, comfortable, business like panties to get a goal attained, or sliding into that risqué g-string when the lights go down in the city for some fun. Humor aside, the book offers advice on everything from how to say no and mean it to how to say yes and feel free enough to enjoy it. It explores ways in which you can reconnect with your inner child and nourish her and also take control and know when to get that kid out from behind the driver's wheel. This book is about organizing your life, one drawer at a time, learning to laugh at yourself, being a friend, and charging head on into passion for life.

Roz Van Meter is a psychotherapist, but she writes like that best friend who spells it all out for you in a fun and endearing way. Buy a copy of "Put Your Big Girl Panties On and Deal With It..." for yourself, one for your husband (who just might learn a thing about the female persuasion), and one for every close girlfriend you have. You'll be looking at yourself and your underwear drawer in a whole new light.

This book includes Swami Vivekananda translation of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.

This is a fine readable translation, but it's at a high-level.

If you are looking for the authentic and authoritative translation, I'd recommend:
~ Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by BKS Iyengar [faithful to the original text; practical/conclusive]

This book provided the information I was looking for on Raja Yoga. Vivekananda's words are a pleasure to read. It has a nice commentary on Patanjali's yoga sutra. The book has a pronunciation guide page and the glossary was quite useful for me as well. As a result of reading this book I purchased Vivekananda's complete works.

Wow! What a treat! Swami Vivekananda has created a classic on Raja-Yoga that is head and shoulders above any that I have read in my 20 years of studying and practicing Advaita Vedanta. This is a great manual for those just beginning their investigation into the wisdom of Vedanta as well as very useful for those who have been practicing for years. Indeed, I would recommend this book as the starting place for any would-be practitioner. Swami speaks straight and clear and his advice is immediately understood and usable. This manual will be at my side for the rest of my life!

You can't go wrong with any book by Vivekananda. Not only was he a great scholar, he was a saint and mystic who had personally experienced the things he taught. This book gives an extremely clear description of Raja Yoga from both a practical and philosophical standpoint. The first half explains the philosophical concepts of Hinduism regarding the relationships between mind, matter, and spirit. The second half of the book walks you through the ancient Yoga Sutras.

A must for understanding human nature!

I have spent years lamenting the notion that my son may need corrective surgery for his scoliosis. I have searched the internet and found my opinions varying with each post read. It became apparent last fall that surgery is his only option. Deciding to get it done as soon as he graduates has put the pressure on us to come to terms with our fears. David's book is the first thing I have read that alleviates my anxiety. This surgery is intense. But reading his chronicle has put us all at ease. We now know that our son's risks from the surgery are FAR less than his risks without it. David's timeline of pre-op thru recovery is honest and detailed. Before reading his book, I felt fairly knowledgeable about this procedure. Ater reading his book, I realize there are alot more questions to ask. Never hard to understand, this book is written in unbiased layman's terms and is short enough to be able to re-read (again and again).

I had originally borrowed this book from my local library to educate myself about the prospect of having surgery to correct my scoliosis. This book was very informative and easy to read. It contains a tremendous amount of information about scoliosis, the surgical process and even what to expect post surgery. This book was also useful in helping me prepare for my second opinion.
I highly recommend "Scoliosis Surgery."

This book by David K. Wolpert is a must read for anyone contemplating
Scoliosis surgery. It has all the Medical Jargon explained in clear terms easily understood by an average person. It is informative and facinating from page 1 to the end. I am scheduled for surgery and could not put it down. It covers all the things you couldn't think of to ask the surgeon. I can't wait for my husband to read it so that we can discuss it. I think this book would benefit anyone with scoliosis even if they are not thinking of immediate surgery. It would help them to realize there are options should their scoliosis progress. Chapter three completely covers alternatives to surgery. I highly recommend this book.

This book covers something of almost everything I would want to know. I bought one for a friend, and have thought about buying a couple more for her mother and other friends, to help them understand what she and her daughter will be going through.

The book fits a specific need - how is someone supposed to get their mind around all of what scoliosis surgery will entail - what to ask, what to do in advance, what to expect. I can't imagine anything more terrifying than handing your daughter over to a back surgeon. This book gives you a place to start - comprehensive but so easy to read, and straight to the point.

It's written from a patient's point of view which is just what most people need.

I found this book extremely interesting. While I have had several energy therapies done, I had never read up on it a lot. That has now changed, and I expect to keep using this book as a manual to feeling better and getting more control over my thinking and emotions. This is definitely not one of those books that you read once and never pick up again. This book is full of exercises and information to help you live a more fulfilling, healthy and positive life. Don't let the idea of it being for the second half of your life keep you from reading this, these techniques can be applied at any stage of life. The included pictures are a definite plus in understanding the material.

Quite honestly, it's almost impossible to contain in a short review all of the positive aspects of this book. For anyone who has ever contemplated alternative therapies, this is an excellent place to start learning what it's all about. I think this is a great resource for anyone who'd like to learn alternative techniques to handling the daily stressors of life. This book gets a 5 star rating from me!

Dr. Dorothea Hover-Kramer's book is a helpful guide for readers who want to be engaged in the second half of life. Her application of energy psychology to aging is a welcome addendum to other methods of staying emotionally and physically fit in the later years. The practical tools and exercises - complete with photographs - are well demonstrated, clearly explained and easy to follow.

This is a welcome invitation not only to participate actively but also to connect to inner wisdom. By freeing our minds of negative scripts, we are increasing the positive flow of energy. Hover-Kramer encourages the reader to nurture our yearning for a meaningful life. Her own positive attitude and enthusiasm almost jump off the page.

In order to live our dreams, she often reminds us that self-discovery is at the heart of change. Letting go of more dysfunctional belief patterns will lead to greater self acceptance. Hover-Kramer then gives specific examples of what to do - access a beautiful memory, express gratitude, give affirmation, acknowledge positive intention, focus breathing. Staying curious increases hope for facing life's challenges. According to Hover-Kramer, miracles await us wherever we're willing to see them.

I've been "lowcarbing" since January 2006 and was given The New Diet Revolution by Atkins. I had success, however, I JUST found out that some medication I was placed on two months after starting LC was a culprit in not only stalling my weight, but gaining 6 pounds. My situation had no bearing on the Atkins plan as I still follow it.

I stumbled upon this book about 4 months ago in a drug store--way before reading any reviews. The writer is credible, the writing style is not over the top on medical terminology. Once you start reading it, it is hard to put down.

Ms. Richard states the facts concerning each plan.

Anyone who is even considering a low carb lifestyle (this is not a "diet") should really read this book BEFORE they start any plan. Although I started lowcarbing before knowing about this book, I believe it would help even a current lowcarber in the event that they may need to make adjustments with whatever method they are using.

The book is very inexpensive and worth much more than it's price. It is a very good, down-to-earth, factual, non-overwhelming read.

I highly recommend this book as your first choice, OR your first read if you own other books.

I bought this book after I read the raving reviews. Now, after I read it I don't see what is so special about this one. Just a summary of the low carb stuff she found on internet blogs. You are way better off with something more constructive and original. In my opinion any of the Fran McCullough books beat this one 10 to one. Hope this information will help my fellow low carb dieters.

I have been low carbing for about 2 months and I was having mixed results before I read this book. The first chapter that compares all the different plans helped me select a plan that was much better for me than the one I was on originally. This book also helped me discover 2 important things that I was doing that slowed my weight loss. The combination of choosing another plan and tossing out my stallers, my weight loss sped up a great deal. Absolutely worth the $7.00 I paid for it.

So many people have written such nice things about this book that I feel compelled to write a negative review. But I can't. This book was very useful. If you are thinking of starting a low carb diet but are not sure which one, start by reading this book. It compares the various diets in an unbiased, down-to-Earth way. For me, the most important part of this book was the chapter which discussed the various factors which can cause the low carb diet to suddenly stop working for no clear reason. Many of the causes of slowing weight loss are not obvious. This book will likely help you find the cause of your slowed weight loss and help you get back on track. And on top of that, the book is so cheap. You are hurting yourself if you don't add this book to your low carb arsenal.

If you are a lo-carb convert and are looking for a way to make this way of eating a lifestyle, I highly recommend you read this book. It is particularly helpful in diagnosing stalls in weight loss, many of which are subtle but can pose a barrier to success. Before reading this book I had the big picture. Now I have the find points and can see that Lo-carb is not just about losing weight but gaining health.

This book is an excellent guide towards discovering the innermost effects that sexual abuse can have on an individul over time. The information is so familiar that, at times, it can be overwhelming to read. Chapter 8 contains helpful suggestions to direct abused indivduals toward healing and healthy sexual behavior. I finally felt like all of my feelings and fears were being described in a way that I had never been able to communicate. This book has helped me to understand my actions and has changed the ways in which I view myself.

This book was not easy to read.
However. Over and over again it phrased things in the perfect way. I can only read it a few pages at a time. I'm only halfway through, and I'm still inching along. When I'm ready to see, ready to learn, ready to be moved, I read this book.

It's wonderful accompanyment to "Courage to Heal" it takes a much more straightforward approach, and is more heartbreaking to read.

What I like about it is that there is a LOT of work that a single person can do in there. It's not dependent on being in a romantic relationship.

I bought this for my wife who has postpartum cardiomyopathy so we could really understand what the cardiologist was saying and doing. Prior to reading it we had been concerned that our cardiologist wasn't engaging us in many "standard" heart failure treatments that we had researched which might improve her daily quality of life. This book really helped my wife and I understand all the CHF jargon and, most importantly, what the heart meds do and how they are supposed to work in the body. Because of this book and other research we have engaged another cardiologist for a second opinion and learned that there are indeed other treatments and therapies available to us. Net Net - this book helps you engage in knowledgeable conversations with your doctor which is key to your survival and successful treatment.
4 stars only because I wish the author had expounded more on some of the topics.

I have been researching several pieces of literature and books regarding CHF.
This book was my first choice. I was not disappointed. The book was in pristine
condition and it was exactly what I was looking for. I was extremely pleased.

This book is an excellent resource for those suffering from heart failure or families trying to understand this disease. I highly recommend it for a resource if not reading it in its entirity. Chapter 11 on foods and salt intake is especially helpful if one has the determination to follow good advice! Success With Heart Failure: Help and Hope for Those Coping With Congestive Heart FailureThe book is so inexpensive that seems foolish not to buy it as a resource!

I'm biased, since Veeck -- As In Wreck was a childhood favorite, but I still say it's the best book ever written on professional baseball. It's a great take on the sport -- baseball's supposed to be FUN for the fans, and this book is a great primer on how to make it so.

A great gift

I gave this book to my brother who is a baseball nut and he loved it. He couldn't wait to get off work so he could sit in the subway and read it all the way home.

He is a historian and found it accurate and a page turner.

Bill Veeck was a true maverick before that term got tossed around by crazed hockey moms/ vp wannabee's. Anyway... the story of this man who was known for sending a midget to bat in the majors and, later in life, the disco demolition fiasco in Chicago, was more than those events. He was the kind of guy who "got it" about pro sports. He knew that the fan should come first and that this should be fun. Aftert reading this, you'll want to give the rest of the owners, agents and prima donna athletes a copy in hope that they too will "see the light". The book is his autobiography of sorts that tells more about his philosophy about the game and business than it does about the facts of his life. A fun read, essential for baseball fans, about the coolest owner ever. A hall of fame read, from a hall of famer.

A Larger Than Life Baseball Story

When John McCain ran for President in 2008 as a maverick, he would have been well advised to read this very autobiography to find how a real maverick operates. Veeck did it with a cheerful outlook, without rancor or bitterness, and with an impish sense of humor. He was truly a man of the people.

I remember Veeck as a White Sox in the late 1970's, when he bought the team, and against all odds, fielded the South Side Hitmen and made a run for the pennant with no defense or pitching. Veeck brought innovation and fun to Comiskey Park, and was no newcomer to baseball by then. Had he been a racecar driver, he would have been on the 480th lap of the Indy 500. Veeck, who lost a leg due to a combat wound, who was a four pack a day smoker, who rarely slept more than three hours a night had a curious, intelligent and unstoppable mind.

In reading his thoughts, I was struck by the prescient content of his thoughts on baseball. In 1962, he proposed revenue sharing for visiting teams on television revenues, predicting that small market teams would not be able to compete in the future. He was the first owner who believed expansion would bestow increased popularity on baseball. And, in immortal words, said that it was not the price of superstardom that would haunt payrolls, but the price of mediocrity.

His energy was astounding. He turned a profit in Milwaukee (pre-Braves and Brewers) by sheer hustle, promotion, and horse trademanship. He brought a world Series to Cleveland by know how, and made himself a beloved figure in that great town.

But through it all, there is his prevailing love for baseball, and the loyalty, admiration and love for his second wife. This is an inspiring story about an original man.

This is one of the single funniest books that I have ever read. Moreover, it is a book that you can reread again and again and still find amusing years after your initial reading. It is that good.

Bill Veeck was the son of a sportswriter (William Veeck, Sr.) who later became a top executive with the Chicago Cubs and helped rebuild the organization. As a young man, Veeck, himself, worked for the Cubs and played an important role in remodeling the bleachers and adding many of the signature features to Wrigley Field. Later, he owned and operated a successful minor league team (the Milwaukee Brewers), a World Series Championship team (the Cleveland Indians), and he presided over the demise of the poorest team in baseball (the St. Louis Browns) before putting in two stints as the head owner of the Chicago White Sox (including the 1959 pennant winning club).

From this unique perspective, Veeck takes the reader on a wild booze fueled ride that explores the joys, the sorrows and hypocrisies of professional baseball. During the Fifties, Veeck was essentially blackballed by his fellow American League owners and compelled to sell his stock in the struggling St. Louis club. As soon as Veeck was out of the picture, the new owner was permitted to move the team to a greener ballfield in Baltimore. The other owners resented Veeck's flair for showmanship. Today, virtually all baseball clubs imitate the promotions that Veeck pioneered.

Someday, I can only hope that Bill Murray succeeds in his ambition to adapt this marvelously humorous book into a motion picture.

Whether you have a food allergy or not, you MUST get this cookbook. I'm a busy working mom who is challenged to quickly put together healthy and tasty homecooked meals for my food-allergic family. Linda's cookbooks have given me the solution. The recipes are easy with clear directions, and they come out great every time. I like that most recipes use everyday ingredients that we usually have on hand, and they are delicious! I also love that these recipes don't taste like "special allergy-safe dishes" that compromise on taste. Not at all! They are just good recipes for yummy dishes, and they happen to be safe for those with these allergies. I have a ton of cookbooks and love to cook... but seriously, I almost always use Linda's recipes, whether I'm cooking for my family, or a potluck, or a dinner party. And people always ask for the recipes. Try the Apricot Glazed Salmon, the Spinach and Apple Salad, the Iced Honey Cookies, the Fudge Filled Banana Muffins...the list goes on and on. Take the stress out of figuring out what to cook...buy this book (and Linda's first one). You will wonder how you ever lived without it.

A must-have for families with these food allergies

This book, as well as her earlier cookbook, is fantastic!! My son has the dairy-egg-peanut allergy & my husband has a dairy allergy. I've never owned a cookbook that I could make every recipe in it & feed it to my family, and I was running out of new meal ideas when I found these books. There are wonderful cake & frosting recipes and recipes for all courses and occaisions. So many new and simple ideas of ways to prepare chicken, potatoes, rice, desserts and more!! If you have these food allergies in your house the only question is why don't you have this cookbook??!! I ordered this one along with her earlier one "What's to Eat" and I tell you, not one recipe is repeated. Order them both - you won't be disappointed!!

My son has allergies to rice, dairy/milk, soy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, seeds, and shellfish. It is very challenging to cook for him and our family. I have tried many cookbooks that claim to be food allergy friendly and have been very disappointed. Many of them will claim to be a dairy-free, egg-free cookbook. But the recipes still call for milk and eggs and there is a note at the bottom that says to omit these if there is an allergy. What kind of solution is that? Linda's two cookbooks are WONDERFUL. The recipes are simple and straightforward to follow. And they are truly egg-free, dairy-free and nut-free. And the end product is delicious. It is truly a cookbook I can use to cook for our whole family. I have primarily used the recipes for baked good such as muffins, breads, cookies, bars, cakes, and frosting and have been pleased with everything so far. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone with food allergies or who is cooking for someone with food allergies. It has been a lifesaver for me. My son's favorite breakfast food is the pumpkin bread that was included in the first cookbook. I always have a supply of it in the freezer! Thanks Linda!

Thank You, Thank You!

I never thought I'd write a review for Amazon, but this cookbook is so great I just had to share and get the word out. I've been using Ms Coss' original cookbook since it was first published as my grandson has the allergies her book deals with. I was hoping she had more delicious recipes up her sleeve that would help me out and she has come through with this new cookbook. Everything in it is so quick and easy to make and it tastes so good! I forget that I'm using a "special" cookbook and use these same recipes for company dinners and I always get rave reviews. Her "Mom's Meatloaf" is a hit, and her briskit and chicken dishes are delicious.
This is a great cookbook to have on hand, whether or not you need it for the allergic people in your life.
