What impresses me most about this touching book is that the children tell the story. Through their candid words and telling pictures, we enter a world that no one ever expects to find themselves in; much less a young child. And yet, the message conveyed is simple: hope. Hope to enjoy life... no matter the length of it. Billy Howard's photograpy allows the soul of each child to shine through. Buy this book. You won't be sorry!

Children's perspective of cancer is presented in this uplifting book through their own words, drawings, and photographs. Despite our natural sadness when confronted with this subject, the reader senses courage and hope when turning the pages of this book. Sadness is there as well, but the faith and fighting spirit of these children remind us of the resilience and strength and unceasing hope within all of us.

As always, Billy shows us the value of each individual. His work focuses on groups of people that we often would prefer not to acknowledge, those with AIDS, those with disabilties, the homeless and, in this case, kids with cancer. But Billy always shows us that we can learn much from each individual and that all can bring joy to our lives. Contrary to being "depressing," this book is full of hope.

Amazing .. the strength we can get from children. I knew Katie and she was a wonderful little girl. Her story continues here and she will always be in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. "Katie's Angel" is on the front of this book and on so many things she left to those who cherished and loved her. I can't see an angel that I do not think of Katie. She even wrote a personal cookbook and this angel is on the cover. The book is suitable for adults and children, because it gives us all hope and the power to be strong, sick or not. Nice pictures and very good reading... but you will fight a lump in your throat.

The impressive result of an eight year project

Angels & Monsters: A Child's Eye View Of Cancer by art therapist Lisa Murray and professional photographer Billy Howard is the impressive result of an eight year project in which Murray worked with children and had them express their feelings about their cancers through their artwork -- and then talk about their art. Howard took a photographic portrait of each child. The artwork and the portraits where paired and presented in a stunningly beautiful and thought-provoking exhibit under the auspices of the American Cancer Society, and which is memorably presented in the pages of Angels & Monsters. Sensitive, insightful, unique, and thoroughly "kid friendly", Angels & Monsters is highly recommended reading for any child (and their parents) having to cope with cancer, and would make a welcome and valued addition to any school or community library collection.

Very intriguing and interesting book. Once you start reading it, you can't put it down until you finish it! I found it to be very educational as well. Her mother was very courageous while her brave daughter fought for her life. She taught Janessa how to stay strong throughout their battle with cancer. You can feel the love they have for each other. Alot of emotion with a wonderful, happy ending.

Heartfelt, Inspirational with a Miraculous Ending!

After reading the book twice I found that I was profoundly moved by the caring of one person for another. It was a learning experience to view the situations that arose between the medical world and the patient. Patricia Fentons delicate yet forceful treatment of her Aunt Allie was a lesson we all need to learn for if we are ever faced with the same situation we need to address it in a like manner, with humor and love. Once I started reading I couldn't put the book down, I looked forward to the next adventure with much anticipation and was never disappointed. This is a must book for anyone who is faced with the caring of a terminally ill person, be it a loved one, a friend or a stranger. It is an inspiration for all of us.

This book is a life-changing experience.

Not long after I read this book, my landlady began to fail and then died. The process was exactly as the author described it and I knew exactly what to do to comfort her and her family in order to make my landlady's transition a memorable experience for all. Besides useful information about death and dying, it's a hilarious romp through the author's life wih the most unforgettable characters. This book is an absolute must-read for anyone with a loved one who is ill or dying or simply because you want a good story.

A reflective and ultimately optimistic memoir
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-11
Why I'm Glad I Had Breast Cancer is the autobiography of Leonore H. Dvorkin, a breast cancer survivor who had a left-side mastectomy at age 52. After her operation, Leonore came to realize the benefits of her struggle against the disease; she had learned how to be happier, calmer, more focused, and more appreciative. Chapters tell of her meditations upon such things as self-pity vs. the need to put one's life experience in perspective; breasts, beauty, sex, and femininity; the challenges of going forward into the future; learning to accept and appreciate the advance of age; and much more. A reflective and ultimately optimistic memoir.

It is indeed the challenging title of Leonore H. Dvorkin's latest nonfiction book `Why I'm Glad I Had Breast Cancer' (WildSide Press, September 2005) that drives one to go for it.

Dvorkin gives an account of her own experience of contracting breast cancer and choosing mastectomy for cure in the face of little social support, favoring her choice. Being a confident woman, well over fifty but physically strong, and a loving wife and mother, her account of life before and after mastectomy is remarkably unaffected and straightforward.

An unsurpassed merit of the book is that the author is not bent on dramatizing situations. Emotional moments are narrated with their normal force. Dvorkin's realistic style of narration adds enormously to the emotional impact of her story.

Lesson after lesson comes as a precious gift of Dvorkin's brave encounter with cancer. Two great lessons of the book are most inspiring. First, real freedom lies in becoming one's true self, ever freer of the expectations of others. Secondly, how to be self-conscious to the right degree and in the right way.

Dvorkin's `Why I'm Glad I Had Breast Cancer' is the gift of her wisdom and fortitude not to be missed by any woman in particular, and anyone in general.

As a result of my living in Canada - Amazon.ca, as opposed to the USA - [...], I had to contact Erin Ley, [...], to post this review. I am so grateful to have encountered this book. Though I do not have any personal experience with cancer, I gained more wonderful insights and wise, life-changing ideas through this book than I have through any other. In a meeting of professional editor colleagues, I recommended this as my year's best read, hands down, and I would encourage anybody to read this book. I believe it will help many families and friends through journeys with cancer, and I have already recommended it to several personal friends.
The world is richer for the wonderful person that is Erin Ley, and we are all fortunate that she wrote this book.

Her conversational style is refreshing and easy to read. I recommend this book to anyone who needs a lift or is going through a difficult time with their health. What a great story of how a woman not only survives cancer but in the process finds a positive and healthy outlook on life!

It's what some people dread more than getting cancer themselves - that one of their closest love ones, be it a spouse, mother, child, or sibling come down with the horrible ailment as you must care for them, and watch them wither away, barely resembling what you knew and loved. "Lean On Me: Cancer Through a Carer's Eyes" is Lorraine Kember's ordeal of dealing with just this type of torment and agony of life as she reflects on her time caring for her husband Brian, the pain from his diagnosis to his death. It is not strictly depressing however, as Kember does find hope in it all, and seeks to spread that message. "Lean on Me: Cancer Through a Carer's Eyes" is highly recommended for anyone with a relative who has been struck with this horrible type of ailment and for community library self-help shelves.
