O'Neill's book does a wonderful job of providing examples on work teams and their issues of space and environmental control. Data and results from his research (case studies, field studies, and experiments) are very helpful. Sometimes the book is difficult to follow because of the way the chapters are organized.

I edited this book, so I'm not the most objective, but FYI, this is a very large book (984 oversize pages) with over 1,000 photos. It is written as a practitioner's manual, so there are many tables and bullets to find content quickly. Best, Rani

Consider the following questions about web design:
*Which font is the best to use for online information?
*What kind of navigation structure best supports user performance?
*What does airplane cockpit research have to do with effective web design?
*How can you design and measure search interfaces to ensure that users view the search results as relevant?
*What must a web designer do in order to ensure that web-based content is accessible to users with physical and cognitive disabilities?
*What task analysis, knowledge elicitation, and user modeling methods are best suited for developing web interfaces and systems?
This handbook gives readers the answers to these questions and more. The book provides a comprehensive treatment of human factors research methods, design guidelines, and processes for use in developing effective websites and web-based technologies. Its 38 chapters are written for a wide audience, and many of the chapter authors lead the field in human factors research and web interface development.
Topics range from the history of human factors and the origins of networked computing, to research methods for understanding user needs and task requirements, to effective interface design guidelines and emerging technologies in the field. Each chapter contains a rich collection of historical and contemporary references, and many chapters provide the reader with links to additional information available online. While some of the information published in this book can be found elsewhere, this text is truly a "one stop shop."
If you can only get one book on web design guidelines and methods (as well as the human factors research behind them), this is the one to have!

This book is a must read for the serious HCI professional. It provides the reader with an understanding of real-world best practices as well as detailed coverage of the key theories. Even though I poured over the first edition while in graduate school I found the new edition worth reading. There are a lot of books by self proclaimed UI experts on the market today. What separates this book from all others is its breadth of coverage and the fact that the authors of each chapter truly are subject matter experts.

A very good presentation of the knowledge of engineering mechanics applied to human motion. The first chapter provides a necessary and sufficient outline of the human system and the related studies. After that, basic engineering mechanics theories are discussed with elaborations and examples zeroing on human body motions. A candidate for a textbook for undergraduate course in biomechanics, and a book to be owned by engineering mechanics instructors.

Human Factor Guidelines

"Human Factors for Pilots" is an insightful book in human factors for aviators that is well written in simple English making it easy to follow and understand. Human factors encompasses a wide range of knowledge, skills and attitudes including communications, situational awareness, problem solving, decision making, and teamwork.
Human factors is concerned with the cognitive and interpersonal skills required to manage the flight within an organised aviation system. In this case, cognitive skills are the mental processes required for gaining and maintaining situational awareness, for solving problems and for taking decisions. Interpersonal skills include effective communications and good teamwork. Good interpersonal skills encourage the creation of synergy and the development of successful teamwork. Both cognitive and interpersonal skills are enhanced by a good emotional climate amongst the crew, but they are also easily degraded by stress, so management of the emotional climate and stress becomes and integral and important element of good human factors.
The book explains that safe and efficient flight operations depend for their success not only on the attainment of sound technical knowledge and skills but also on the mastery by aircrew of the cognitive and interpersonal skills which form the basis of good human factors.
The book shows that human factors is not merely an abstract management concept but rather is a discipline that embraces principles and skills which, when coupled with good technical knowledge and expertise, will allow the crew to make the best use of all available resources to realize optimum effectiveness in the conduct of operations whilst simultaneously maximising the safety of the flight.
This excellent book is recommended for all pilots and cabin attendants, regulators, safety managers and aeronautical engineering students

Professor,
I am enjoying your new book.
It articulates much of what we teach in developing process-based management systems.
What you say connects particularly well with our process model.
We shall add your book to those we recommend our students' study.
Meanwhile, my business partners and I are enjoying and learning from your book.
Many thanks for your wise and enlightening insights and information.
We shall turn some of them into knowledge through our work,
John
