Good Book for the Non-NeurologistReview Date: 2005-10-26
For someone with a broader understanding of epilepsy it could be an adequate ready reference in the clinic.
The authors point out ongoing controversies regarding treatment and give reasonable recommendations. A good example is on page 100 where they describe the "kindling" phenomenon and cast doubt on the concept if the patient has had less than 10 seizures.
There is much solid science to be found in the tables. A good example is the chapter on drug treatment of epilepsy. The information table on each drug has a section that lists possible mechanisms of action. This allows the physician to chose based on target of action rather than just seizure type. The text is backed up with 225 references, some as recent as 2003.
I recommend this book for the non-neurologist physician that wants a concise reference that does not take up too much shelf space.

Extremely Good Source of InfoReview Date: 2007-01-09
It gives the web addresses, phone #'s, etc., where you can obtain more info., plus background info so that you have some idea of what your neurologist is talking about. Also useful are the sections which deal with the (inevitable) prejudice that you can expect to encounter, the legislation to help you do so, etc.

The Armstrongs give an honest view of disease and decisionsReview Date: 1999-10-11
Yes, it is stressful to read about rudeness and contriteness encountered in the medical field. And yes, reading about a child's battered body from both seizures and drugs is not pleasant. But between these pages lie the reality of a disease and the opposing sides of an impossible decision.
While Rasmussen's appears to be a viral, contracted disease, and is in that regard dissimilar from other disorders effecting the brain, the ordeals with medial professionals, medical institutions, medications, research, and the meticulous weighing of conclusions are similar. How one family coped, and at times did not cope, is both reassuring and frightening. Until we live in an ideal world where children are spared the pain and cruelty of diseases like Rasmussen's, we can be appreciative that families such as the Armstrongs have the courage that comes from deeply loving a child to share their story simply and honestly.

Not Free SF ReaderReview Date: 2007-11-01
A patient prone to an extremely serious seizure illness is given a new sort of treatment, direct electrical stimulation of parts of his brain. This works ok for a little bit, but showing that too much of a good thing is perhaps not the best idea, the pleasure centre treating technique is taken over by the patient himself, making him go crazy.
Then it is time for a bit of slasher action with a murdering brain altered crazy man on the loose to be stopped.

Too much work!!!Review Date: 2002-03-18
For somebody with a full-time job, for whom cooking is a chore rather than a hobby, the recipes are entirely too complex.
Also, having to flip back and forth from a recipe to the directions for preparing a butter or sauce is really annoying.
Unless your kitchen appliances have names like "Viking" or "Sub-Zero" and you have a lot of storage space for ready made sauces and the like, look elsewhere for a ketogenic cookbook.
I will be selling mine.

I want to educate society on epilepsy and help those with epilepsy who still have no idea that there are surgery procedures out there that could help a great deal of them and change their lives forever. Nobody should have to endure some of the things I had to.
