Ok, It's been a long time since I read this book, close to 10 years, but I read and re-read it then. This moving story of a young girl learning to deal with epilepsy is wonderful for anyone having a hard time, especially young-adults. I think of it fondly as a fairy-tale.

This book is of use to any person who wants to know more about epilepsy; specifically, about terms and medications they might here when talking to a person who has epilepsy. There may be some areas which would be difficult for lay readers to understand. Overall, a very good resource. Any person interested in teaching about epilepsy should have this book.

Good Book for the Non-Neurologist
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-26
I bought this book thinking I was getting a textbook on pediatric neurology. It is a paperback of less than 200 pages. In spite of its brevity, it is loaded with information, much in tabular form.

For someone with a broader understanding of epilepsy it could be an adequate ready reference in the clinic.

The authors point out ongoing controversies regarding treatment and give reasonable recommendations. A good example is on page 100 where they describe the "kindling" phenomenon and cast doubt on the concept if the patient has had less than 10 seizures.

There is much solid science to be found in the tables. A good example is the chapter on drug treatment of epilepsy. The information table on each drug has a section that lists possible mechanisms of action. This allows the physician to chose based on target of action rather than just seizure type. The text is backed up with 225 references, some as recent as 2003.

I recommend this book for the non-neurologist physician that wants a concise reference that does not take up too much shelf space.

I have Epilepsy, and found this an extremely good reference.

It gives the web addresses, phone #'s, etc., where you can obtain more info., plus background info so that you have some idea of what your neurologist is talking about. Also useful are the sections which deal with the (inevitable) prejudice that you can expect to encounter, the legislation to help you do so, etc.

I found this book very informative and helpful. It explained the dynamics of migraine, the different types that had been overlooked and how to help yourself. I was able to follow most of the instructions with no trouble and see results - no charlatan here, Jan de Vries obviously knows what he is talking about. Thoroughly good read and his recommendations are simple and straightforward.

The Armstrongs give an honest view of disease and decisions
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-11
Nicky Armstrong's young son, Jesse, had a hemispherectomy (removal of one half of his brain) after a prolonged and disruptive seizure disorder caused by Rasmussen's Syndrome. For families considering neurosurgery, this family's story should be on the "consider reading" list.

Yes, it is stressful to read about rudeness and contriteness encountered in the medical field. And yes, reading about a child's battered body from both seizures and drugs is not pleasant. But between these pages lie the reality of a disease and the opposing sides of an impossible decision.

While Rasmussen's appears to be a viral, contracted disease, and is in that regard dissimilar from other disorders effecting the brain, the ordeals with medial professionals, medical institutions, medications, research, and the meticulous weighing of conclusions are similar. How one family coped, and at times did not cope, is both reassuring and frightening. Until we live in an ideal world where children are spared the pain and cruelty of diseases like Rasmussen's, we can be appreciative that families such as the Armstrongs have the courage that comes from deeply loving a child to share their story simply and honestly.

I just read this book in 2008 so its from like from the Dark Ages. Obsolete technology and cardboard characters. I guess I was expecting so much more from the delightful experience of reading Jurassic Park, Sphere and Prey.

lame...

I just finished this book...finally & with great disappointment. What a lame ending. I thought about not even finishing it, but kept hoping that it would get better. Well, it didn't. Many other reviewers mentioned the outdated technology, which is true, but outdated technology isn't what ruins a story, a lame story is what ruins a story. And speaking of lame, Andromeda Strain is just as bad as Terminal Man. If you want suspense & action, read Jurassic Park & The Lost World.

Outdated, not Crichton's best

I have been an avid fan of Crichton's for a long time and decided to peruse his older material. Terminal man was written in 1972 and Crichton's writing skill has come a long way since then. Well, perhaps the audience is much different from that of the 1970's. I couldn't finish this one. Characters were not engaging, a majority of the book was spent on describing the technology, so very little plot actually occurs until the end, at which point, I no longer cared. Would not recommend to those who are fans of Crichton's faster paced books like Jurassic Park.

Has a nice story. A thriller through and through. Poor ending from a great climax though. All in all not a bad experience. (^0^)

Brain rage overload death spree.

A patient prone to an extremely serious seizure illness is given a new sort of treatment, direct electrical stimulation of parts of his brain. This works ok for a little bit, but showing that too much of a good thing is perhaps not the best idea, the pleasure centre treating technique is taken over by the patient himself, making him go crazy.

Then it is time for a bit of slasher action with a murdering brain altered crazy man on the loose to be stopped.

Too much work!!!

I'm a big fan of low carb eating, however the recipes in this book rely on having different butters and marinades and cream sauces prepared ahead of time.

For somebody with a full-time job, for whom cooking is a chore rather than a hobby, the recipes are entirely too complex.

Also, having to flip back and forth from a recipe to the directions for preparing a butter or sauce is really annoying.

Unless your kitchen appliances have names like "Viking" or "Sub-Zero" and you have a lot of storage space for ready made sauces and the like, look elsewhere for a ketogenic cookbook.

I will be selling mine.

As a dietitian who works with children on the Ketogenic Diet, I was delighted to finally see a cookbook with some imaginative options for meals. Each menu has at least one other option for the picky eater and includes menus for holidays and special occasions. The book also includes traveling tips/checklist, a list of hotel chain phone numbers (to check ahead on refrigerators), contact information for food companies and a seizure chart. I would recommend this book to anyone on the Ketogenic diet, but especially for older children or those on the diet over 6 months just looking for new options.

A great idea getter

Ok ... so this cookbook may be a bit gourmet styled, it is still a life saver for those of us that have done "the diet" for years and need new ways to keep our children eating. After all not eating on the diet is as bad as cheating on the diet. You get great ideas for holiday meals. I personally did the butter recipes and they were a big hit. You need to work with your dietian to get the amounts right but when you have it down this is a great way to "spice" up their foods.

Not for weight loss

This book was not written as a weight loss cookbook. It is meant for people who have made the commitment to use diet as "an adjunct to anticonvulsant medication for the control of seizures", particularly for children. (as mentioned in the introduction) The challenges posed by the recipes are outweighed by the positive results I have found in the reduction of seizures in my step-children. We have been able to reduce their medication as a result. Working with a dietitian (portioning) and family doctor is critical to the diets' overall success for seizure reduction, but it's well worth all the effort!

As an epilepsy patient I was hoping to find some insight and possibly inspiration from this book. I got neither of these two things. It is a worthless and shameless piece of self-admiration. I won't allow this to take one more minute of my time so I will just say you would become more enlightened to read the back of a cereal box.

I put my parents through sheer hell between the severe depression that the medications were causing as well as the "pity party" I was having for myself for so many years. I have encountered more life altering experiences than anyone should have to endure in their lifetime.

I want to educate society on epilepsy and help those with epilepsy who still have no idea that there are surgery procedures out there that could help a great deal of them and change their lives forever. Nobody should have to endure some of the things I had to.
