There is a lot of confusion out in there working world about ventilation, particularly portable systems. As a Confined Space Trainer I found this book to be a real open window on the field. I wanted to back up some of my theories and develop my understanding on portable systems, so I would have complete answers for my students when asked. This book not only provided that, but has also proved to be a handy reference when dealing with the unusual circumstances often found in Confined Space Hazard Control. Almost daily I am asked to review, design, or check on how portable systems are being employed in the field, and this hand-book is a valuable tool to have in one's arsenal. Anyone, who needs a better understanding of portable ventilation, should read this first.

The book gave me a scoope in the matter. People that is concerned with this kind of subject need to know, at first, where is the north. The media generaly put us crazy.
To electrical engineers, dealing with line construction and with people against the development, based in pseudo technical knowledge need to have references so,I think that is an important book to help development in a bases of science.
I recomend it to the media, before write, study or ask to those that deals with the matter.

This book has been extremely valuable to me ever since I began working as a hazardous waste epidemiologist. When people ask me questions about environmental health that fall outside my area of personal expertise, it is the first book that I check as a reference. It is getting a little old, however, and I had logged on to see if by chance there was a more up to date edition. Nonetheless, despite its age, it covers all of the basics really well. It pulls together clinical, epidemiological, and toxicological evidence as well as information on environmental regulation and sources of contamination. There is a comprehensive list of chemicals affecting every organ system, and the book also includes chapters that are organized by type of exposure such as air and water pollutants. It also talks about broader trends in pollution. If you need a good reference book, I highly recommend it!

This is an excellent reference. Its best feature is that all ( or most ) chemical synonyms. including tradenames, for a specific substance are listed alphabetically. This usually lets you find a substance in one attempt.

Regulating Toxic Substances: A Philosophy of Science and the Law

Regulating Toxic Substances: A Philosophy of Science and the Law provides a sophisticated and educational analysis of the complexities associated with regulating, assessing and conceptualizing toxic substances. Cranor does an impressive job at dissecting and disentangling the perplexing relationship between scientific risk assessment analysis as it pertains to Tort law, regulatory agencies and their epistemic and philosophical considerations. Theories of distribution and variants of Rawls's concept of Utilitarianism provide an atypical way of conceptualizing ethical justifications for the regulation of carcinogens and other toxic substances. The universal consideration taken by Cranor is the relationship between scientific assessment of toxic substances and public-healthcare policy efficiency. Of particular value, the last four appendices discuss the theoretic and scientific cancer potency estimates in the California Department of Health Sciences (CDHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Models of risk act as a function of Alpha and Beta values, statutes authorizing the regulation of carcinogens, and derivation of TD50 (tumorigenic dose) potency values. Regulating Toxic Substances: A Philosophy of Science and the Law will be best suited for those who are interested in the toxic Tort litigation and familiar with moderate to advanced statistic models of risk assessment and public-healthcare policy. Clanor puts together a cohesive evaluation of the synergetic relationship between toxic substances, policy and scientific method.

Staying Healthy in a Toxic World is a basic manual for well being. The author does not present any new 'ground-breaking' material. Rather, he presents basic, time tested methods that work. In a nutshell these are:

- Maintaining a positive mindset
- Eating healthy foods
- Avoiding toxic substances
- Exercise!
- Seek Chiropractic and other professional help when needed

In my experience, and in my opinion, any one who follows the authors advice will benefit with increasing health and vitality.

Again, there is no magic here. The ability of the body to heal itself goes back to the very begining of life on this planet; the advice in this book helps us to do it NOW.

Survey of environmental epidemiology subjects
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-22
This book was assigned in my graduate level course in environmental epidemiology. Steenland and Savitz provide adequate introductory and background information for environmental epi and the rest of the chapters are written by experts in their respective fields.

The only problem I had with the book is the very different writing styles between authors of chapters. If you attempt to read more than one chapter in one sitting, you might want to take a breather in between chapters and clear your mind a bit. Otherwise, the 358 pages are a great summary of the thousands of scientific articles one would need to read to begin to understand this complex field. The editors and authors have done a nice job choosing subjects that are at the core of environmental epi and that are interesting as well. It was informative and educational.

Inspiration for up and coming environmental groups
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-23
Barbara Allen tells a great story of diverse community groups in Louisiana coming together to fight local chemical manufacturing polluters that are destroying resident's quality of living and lives along Louisiana's Chemical Corridor. The descriptions of her of characters in the fight for environmental justice are incredible e.g. Willie Fontenot and Wilma Subra. Her research for the book was outstanding, as she put aside her political and social convictions to interview activists, chemical industry representatives, and government officials (the latter two, often being the same people during different years). My favorite part of the book was the last chapter where Allen explores the role of expert-activists in the struggle for a cleaner environment.
