It does well at giving an over view of how community health promotion works in real life. However, it can be a little pie in the sky.

I have reviewed and tried to read numerous books on the osha guidelines but this is without a doubt the best! The information was understandable and informative and the narative was interjected enough to keep me awake. I especially found the section, chapter, on what is osha recordable / what is not most helpful. This chapter alone makes the book worth purchasing. It also provided a generous amount of details on others regulations and inspections tips.

Dr. Edelstein is careful and methodical in his telling of the enormous psychological impact of water contamination. He is especially informative about the factor of "place" as it affects individuals and families whose wells are poisoned.

The Core Curriculum for Occupational and Environmental Nursing is a quality resource for all Occupational Health Nurses. It has extensive information for many facets and applications of Occupational Health. The chapters are well organized and the writing is succinct and to the point. There does not appear to contain overspeak which often can limit the effectiveness of a professional text. Ms. Salazar's extensive experience and knowledge are clearly presented in a very useful text which should be a part of every Occupational Nurse's library.

I rather enjoy it. My only criticism is that the book concludes with a request for more public attention. I certainly hope that the author will go on a book tour in order to help with this attention. This book would be appropriate material for a civil engineering history class.

Facinating and Tragic

This book covers the ecological damage caused by 70 some odd years of communist mismanagement in the Soviet Union. There are plenty of facts and figures but despite that, the book is a relatively easy read. So easy, in fact, that if you're not careful, you might just get an ecological education.
It should also give pause to any that still believe that handing the ecology to government will fix anything. The Soviets had government like billy hell, and all they managed to do was make uninhabitable cities, turned farm land into salt marshes, and irradiated large portions of Europe. There are also intriguing and thoughtful passages that trace how a small thing creates a big problem, each of them fascinating.
If you are interested in ecology, the ex Soviet Union, or ecology by government fiat, this is the book for you. A better and easier read then the others on the subject I've had to wade through.

Excellent work on ecological economics

It is more than three decades since Schumacher and Daly wrote the seminal works of ecological economics. While there have been numerous contributions to the field since then, the ideas have remained outside the mainstream. The rising spectre of climate change might be enough to change that though. The threat that climate change poses is the basis for Simms' argument for a new way of thinking about economics. Simms argues his case clearly without using jargon.
This book is a very accessible read for anyone interested in the problems of climate change and some possible solutions.

Good discussions, if a bit outdated

This book provides a nice collection of essays on ecosystem health from philosophical, scientific, ethical, and practical viewpoints. A nice, focused discussion of Aldo Leopold's land ethic is given by his most famous advocate, J. Baird Callicot. Eugene Hargrove also offers a succinct but cogent analysis of using economics to "solve" environmental problems and offers up the idea of using existentialism as a pragmatic way to give meaning and value to seemingly intractable environmental issues. The second half of the book gets more technical in attempting to measure ecosystem health, but for the professional or academic ecologist, this should be insightful. Being over 10 years old, of course, some of the ideas and approaches, especially in the second half of the book, may seem slightly out-of-date, but that does not detract from the value of the book as a good collection of essays centered around a very important and persistent issue facing us at multiple spatial and temporal scales.

Cahill's Environmental Auditing Textbook Review

Overall, it is a very useful textbook offering a generic approach to environmental audits which can easily be expanded to health, safety and security issues. The author(s) does a very thorough job in discussing the activities and protocols involved with the 3 phases of the auditing process: 1. Pre-audit Phase; 2. On-site Audit Phase; and 3. Post-Audit Phase. The textbook utilizes the input from several different authors which results in some duplication of information, but repetition is good in this much changing field.
Needs to be updated and expanded with respect to a few more current issues: Impact of the Sarbanes-Oxley law, current ISO 14001 issues, plus some others. A more detailed chapter on Root-Cause Analysis would be beneficial with more examples. This type of analysis seems to be the most prevalent in deciding upon Corrective Actions and Recommendations needed to mitigate future deficiencies of a similar nature.
An instructor's manual containing some general or specific discussion questions for each chapter would also be helpful. The references contained within each chapter are useful. Placing current "Insights" - articles or case law relevant to the chapter material would also enable the authors to keep current with fewer new chapters in subsequent editions. More sample examples of Audit Instruments (checklists) and detailed suggestions for Corrective Action follow-up would be useful.
This textbook is currently being used at the Master's level assuming little or no pre-requisite knowledge of the auditing process. It is being taught in on-campus and on-line classes.
