Excellent Exposure to Chemical Exposure

Review Date: 2003-06-12
Environmentally Induced Illnesses is written by teacher of Medical Ethics and Philosophy Professor Thomas Kerns. His background provides the reader with the means and insight to ask important questions, weigh the humanitarian aspects and uncover truths that may be unfamiliar to us. Not only does the author have this applicable knowledge but he has also personally experienced the devastating effects of chemicals within the environment with the onset of his diagnosed multiple chemical sensitivity which occurred in mid life. This book is a shocker. The author lets us in on how massive chemical exposure really is in our every day lives. In the introduction he provides a window for us to see what has been previously invisible to most all of us. Three chemicals are realized, Formaldehyde which is prevalent in our beds, clothes, furniture and carpets. This alone comprises almost every environment we find ourselves in. He goes on to discuss the dangers of fragrances, found in lotions, fabric softeners and various hygiene products. He then introduces Pesticides, which he discloses are not only in homes, offices and schools but many public places one would never consider. Within the first few pages much is discovered and the reader gets a sense that the statistics in the rest of the book will be staggering, and they are. Kerns says that 35 billions lbs. are released yearly. A plethora of chemicals and how they live around and effect us is explained. The problem with these exposures is examined, improper documentation, the human health factors (illnesses) and human rights, policies, ethical dilemmas, the economic role and legal aspects. Kerns provides sounds suggestions for ways of dealing with these issues. He believes the public should be informed and that should be applied to and required of corporations, by law. He stresses product safety and avenues of proof before they are released to the market. He underscores the importance of research in the area of toxicants and their effects. After you read how dominating and dangerous they are, you will agree with him. This book is an amazing expose of truth and an eye opener of awareness. You will look at the world around you differently. We are provided with a new understanding and empathy of those who endure the effects, concern for own safety and for what can be done.

Long-term, low-dose exposure to toxicants around the world

There are a growing number of illnesses which are chemically induced from long-term, low-dose exposure to toxicants around the world, and Thomas Kerns' Environmentally Induced Illnesses covers the ethical dimension of managing environmental health and such toxicants, from perfumes to solvents. The latest medical literature on chronic health effects from such exposure is presented, along with recommendations for overall public and social policy changes. Environmentally Induced Illnesses is a far-reaching guide which blends both risk assessment and human rights issues under one cover.

No more controversy!

The facts are in and this book clearly points out that Enviromentally Induced Illnesses like Multiple Chemical Sensitivities are REAL! This book also points out how companies go to great lengths to hide these facts from the public. And unlike the other books in this genra, the author offers well thought out, common sense, easily implemented solutions. This is a great book...be prepared to have your emotions stirred.

Excellent look at human rights and chemical exposures.

This is an intelligent, well-crafted book on a subject that merits far greater attention in our society. Beginning with a brief account of the onset of his own illness, Thomas Kerns knowledgeably leads the reader to an awareness of the enormous quantities of synthetic chemicals put into our modern environment. Not only our air and water, but our offices, homes, schools, even our clothing contain toxicants such as formaldehyde, artificial fragrances, and pesticides. Few people are aware of the chronic illnesses and severe life disruption that can result. This book focuses especially on illnesses caused by long-term exposure to low doses of ubiquitous toxicants.

How is it the citizens are not given choices, or even informed of the risks? Kerns argues that "given certain facts about toxicant induced illnesses (Chapter One, Data), and given certain ethical principles (Chapter Two, Principles), some definite changes will need to be made (Chapter Three, Modest Proposals), despite some serious obstacles and challenges (Chapter Four, Brick Walls).

Writing in a clear and engaging style, the author draws on a wide variety of sources to make his case. By examining the issues from the perspective of ethics and society, this book expands the range of available writing about chemical sensitivity disorders.

I recommend it especially to people with toxicant induced illnesses, to activists, public health advocates, policymakers and anyone interested in society's puzzling lack of response to a looming health crisis.

This is one of the most Informative works on the subject of Hemp that I have read in 20 years. I have been researching Hemp & Marijuana for over 40 years. To date this is one of the most educational compilations of information on the subject that I have found. If everyone in America were made aware of the information in this book, the insanity of the Hemp/marijuana war being waged in this country by overzealot/misinformed
Law Makers and Enforcers would end. Then we could begin building a Billion dollar industry that will save the countries farmers and the world would be a better place.

Author Lorraine Smith had been in academia as her life's career --teaching. The September 1994 school session opens, and Ms. Smith (now Dr. Smith) is looking forward to another year with students. The school building is having a new roof installed, while school is in session. Lorraine Smith experiences illness, along with her students, from the odor of chemicals being used to apply the roofing material. It doesn't end there... she becomes so ill from head to toe, literally, Ms. Smith has to stop teaching, becomes purposefully reclusive, cannot go outside, wear certain clothes, even the smell of coffee makes her ill. Ms. Smith seeks help from varied physicians... one blatantly laughs at her throughout the medical appointment.

One physician gives her a diagnosis -- Environmental Illness (EI) or Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). But, he tells her, there is no cure! Over years of suffering, and courageous, non-stop searching, she meets others who have the same illness. She discovers doctors and alternative medicine who know Environmental Illness, providing the increasingly ill Ms. Smith with knowledge, understanding, support, assistance and clinical, healing methods.

Lorraine Smith is now a Doctor of Clinical Hypnotherapy (D.C.H.). After a horrendous struggle, Dr. Smith today helps other sufferers. Read this book for information, if for no other reason. One of the best medical references on the bookshelves. It is enlightening with bibliography, indices of terms and referrals. The reader will discover many other surprises as they delve into the life of Lorraine Smith, D.C.H.

The biblio references vary from Deepak Chopra, M.D., "Quantum Healing"; Professor Steven Rochlitz, "Allergies and Candida: with the Physicist's Rapid Solution"; Devi Nambudripad, S., D.C., L.Ac., R.N., Ph.D., "Say Goodbye to Illness", and Norman Vincent Peale, "How to Handle Tough Times."

I was drawn to the word "HEAL" in the book title. She has come a long way in her journey - but is not healed. I was saddened when I came to the end! I felt the anguish of her story as I am experiencing chemical sensitivities as well. Beautifully written! This woman (and her wonderful husband) have been thru a very hard time - quite the nightmare! I have tried many of the treatments she speaks about - except for the hypnotism. I will pursue this avenue soon! The pages had me sobbing as I related to many different episodes in her life. If she has "HEALED" since the release of this book - I would love to read the follow up book! I'm saddened that this is a life sentence

Heal Environmental Illness and Reclaim Your Life is a moving account
of a schoolteacher's journey through the effects of environmental
illness. Her intense search for help leads to her discovery of
alternative healing methods. These methods take her far from her
earlier understandings and into a world where alternative health
practices bring about her dramatic recovery.

Confused by her
symptoms, the doctors can do nothing. Her mounting allergic reactions
leave Dr. Smith and her family desolate. Alone with accumulating
physical problems (from excruciating body sensations to problems with
seeing, hearing, eating, and breathing), her world becomes very
small. She sits next to her window, listening to her clock, wondering
why she is suffering so much. Through it all, the author does not
give up. Slowly, she builds on each small poignant turning point. She
shares these stories with her readers, as well as the practical
healing ideas and methods she discovers (including exercises that even
someone quite ill can do).

One of the very special features of
this book is that many of Dr. Smith's suggestions cost nothing to
incorporate. The biggest investment needed by readers is that of
cultivating willingness . . . to believe that healing is quite
possible. She describes how each seeming obstacle eventually, through
her willingness, becomes a jumping off point. Dr. Smith gives readers
the means to take control of many aspects of their recovery.

This
book is full of optimism, compassion for those who suffer, practical
advice on what to do, and energetic ways to gently and incrementally
ease back into living. She also includes her spiritual experiences,
for those who wish to call on this often ignored aspect of recovering
health. Dr. Smith's personal story (told in a stirring,
straightforward, and easy to understand manner), combined with helpful
healing ideas (also presented in a clear, useful, easy to grasp and
practice fashion), make this book a rare find. The reader is offered
hope and the means to realize that hope in Heal Environmental Illness
and Reclaim Your Life.

Dr. Smith understands what it is to live
through having EI. Her gentle and honest narrative invite you to feel
as though she is right there to offer wisdom and kindness and
help. She also knows what it is to recover! Her words are uplifting
and inspiring. Her fascinating journey provides a path for others to
discover their journey, one that well may result in seeming miracles!

A Journey Worth Taking

In her book Heal Environmental Illness and Reclaim Your Life the author, Dr. Lorraine Smith, takes the reader into a fascinating journey into the world of the environmentally ill. In what may eventually serve as the handbook for dealing with environmental illness the author adroitly covers all aspects off the illness on not only the afflicted but their families as well.

Dr.Smith provides an extremely personal and vivid first-hand account of the long, downward spiral of declining health she experienced after being exposed to chemical solvents, and her heart-rendering account of her struggles to regain her health are powerfully told. Poignantly detailed are her many long hours of solitude and loneliness forced upon her due to the nature of the illness, something to which fellow sufferers will readily relate.

Dr. Smith's extensive research of environmental illness helps to provide a veritable wealth of information on alternative therapies not recognized by the established medical community. Her solution and the path she takes to restore her own health have provided not only a ray of hope to the many thousands afflicted with the problem but a blueprint to wellness as well.

This book is just amazing. Unless you have read this book, you have absolutely no idea to which extent light and more generally electromagnetic radiation influences our health and our life. If the knowlegde contained inside the pages of this book would be spread more widely, mankind would make vast improvements.

This book belongs in a list of books that are all written by pioneers in their particular field of study, and that would have huge implications if more people would have read them.

Do you want to be in control of your life? Do you want to understand, prevent and cure disease? Do you want to feel great not just physically, but mentally as well? Do you want to stop losing loved ones because of terrible diseases? Then read the following books: 'Nutrition And Physical Degeneration' by Weston A. Price, 'Enzyme Nutrition' by Edward Howell, 'The Truth About Children's Health' by Robert Bernardini, 'The Body Electric' by Robert Becker and 'Health And Light' by John Ott. If you have read these books, you will know much more about health than every doctor or scientist, but you will also have a much better understanding of industry, politics and society in general. Above all, you will have the power to change things for the better.

John Nash Ott in his breakthrough book warns of the dangers of the overuse and under-regulation of modern electromagnetic technology. He also discusses the negative effects of digital watches, certain man made fibers such as polyester and vinyl, ionizing-type smoke detectors, certain types of fluorescent lighting, video display terminals, electronic fetal monitoring equipment in hospitals, and other high technology items. The book has easy-to-do demonstrations showing the relationship of colored lighting and the positive and negative effects that it can create. He links light, color and health.

"Can a book make you smarter? Perhaps not, but "Illusion of Certainty" can certainly help you make smarter decisions--especially when it comes to health choices." (from our review of this book at LifeTwo.com).

This book should be required reading for policy makers, doctors, and especially journalists covering health and environmental matters. Perhaps the biggest beneficiaries however are people trying to make informed decisions involving their personal health. By exposing the bias that exists in the system against communicating risk as well as the reliance on "relative" risks/benefits over "absolute" risks/benefits, it is easy to see why it seems the answer to every problem is a drug prescription.

The book does an outstanding job of establishing a theoretical basis for their premise and then walking the readers through example after example of its application.

Can't say enough good things about this book.

This is a great book that details how environmental hazards along with food allergies affect children. It analyzes schools and homes to inform people of the chemicals, paint, carpeting, spices, etc. cause symptoms of Learning Disabilities or behavior problems. The chapters in this book are broken down specifically to help you target your concerns. I loved the pictoral and writing samples given in this book. As a special educator, I found this book extremely helpful in my school building and with my own family. I recommend this to anyone with concerns about their children or students.

This book is incredible and I have given a copy to my son's principal. We had already incorporated a lot of her suggestions based on appointments with our Environmental Physician. Her book was instrumental in helping me replace cleaners in my son's classroom. Also, her other book, Our Toxic World is worth reading as well. We have seen some wonderful changes for the entire family by changing cleaners, eliminating pesticides, and identifying triggers for us. This should be required reading material for school administrators.

Dr. Rapp hits another home run with this work. If you have school age children who have experienced behavioral problems at school, then you want to read this book.

This book also gives the reader suggestions on things that can be changed at home, with diet and nutrition to improve your child's well being.

Don't be surprised if school officials try to discredit this work. After all, "traditional thinking", while outdated, has prevailed for years. We gave a copy of the book to the school principle, who promised to read it. The other "experts" simply pushed the book away and changed the topic.

We have shared this information with others, and have a "loaner copy" that we are sharing with other parents in our school system.

Ms Steingraber provides poignant views of the environment where she and others are bathed in toxins. Her chapters are simply titled air, water, fire, ... , but they each delve deeply into both science and personal history.

Ms Steingraber knows her science and at the same time has a wonderful gift for conveying it to others less knowledgeable.

On the personal level, the author relates very closely to the place where she grew up and its effects on her immediate environment where she became a cancer victim at the age of 20.

My only disappointment was that the author did not quantitatively describe the various risks. Specifically, what is the relative level of risk of eating meat versus being a vegetarian?

All in all a wonderful and very readable book that I would strongly recommend to all.

All of us our now carrying endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC's or "gender benders") hidden in our fat cells which are altering our sexuality, our ability to reproduce, our short term memory, our health...perhaps the very survival of the species. Steingraber makes this data accesible while she invokes a sense of land and family, as well as the stigma of cancer. Read this book! Marcia's book chronicles not only her life, but her search for health. I was deeply touched by the inclusion of her father's journal entries about her. She was a treasured daughter, but after his death, she took many turns trying to find that unconditional love again.
She developed Environmental Illness with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Her life was almost one of a recluse because of this. She was allergic or reactive to many common smells from smoke to fabric softener. Once a liberal Californian she traveled to a small town in rural Georgia for help. Remarkably she found it. She includes some of the sessions and I found them very healing for myself.
If you are at the end of your rope and have tried many healing modalities, this book will give you hope. Her book will be the light at the end of the tunnel for many.

It's 3:00AM and you're worried sick. Your world is crashing down around you and there seems like no light at the end of the tunnel. HELPPPPP!!!!!Doctors have given you a death sentance. Is there a way out???? Where is God in all this???? Why me???

Thanks to Google, that mad 3:00am search led you to the right place!

"A New Song For Marcia" proves that God still heals today and He will heal you too. Marcia was a hippie, a yippie and a follower of a guru. At one point she became deathly ill with Environmental Illness (E.I.). She traveled the world and dabbled in everything to get well. Then, She had a close encounter with the living God! She is completely healthy today! WOW! What an awesome God!

Her book explains the whole journey -- the healing of her body, spirit and mind. Her testimony is not only moving, but will help pave the way towards your own. Remember, your sins are not so great that God won't touch you.

I strogly advise anyone sick with any illness to buy this book. It
is also great for people coming out of the New Age.

Although this is a "Christian" book, I believe the principles Marcia used to get well will work on everybody.

See also Henry Wright's "A More Excellent Way" and Anita Hill's "Out of Many Waters".

Be blessed!

A New Song for Marcia

A New Song for Marcia is a deeply moving true personal account of a woman who tried everything under the sun to get well from environmental illness and multiple chemical sensitivity. This vibrant woman loves life, and the story talks about her growing up, her becomimg active San Francisco in the 1960's and spiritual as well as travel adventures, but how crippling disease basically turned her into a shut in with few friends and less who understood her. Do you ever feel like no one understands what you're suffering from? Get this book, because it is not only the story about her getting sick, but she shares her journey of how she got well and has stayed well for many years.

Many people are still trying to get well, and this book is a ray of sunshine and hope. It is not just a promise or a `maybe', but the actual story of how she got sick to the point of where she was even reacting to water and her own clothing. She shares the hopelessness many people feel when no one around them understands how they have severe reactions to the simplest substances. With compassion and grace she talks about what it was like and what she needed to do to become well. It's not just one woman's story, but I could certainly relate, and her story has helped me tremendously.

Marcia gives you a look into how it was when she spent her days trying to get well, and sometimes just trying to survive. But the best part comes when she tells you how she went from being stuck at home, not able to go outside without a respirator mask, to how she got well to where she lives free of illness today.

She shares what she did to get well, which is information you can use for your own life. What she did, you can do, too. Anyone can get well from EI and lots of other illnesses. If you think about it, many people are just being 'maintained' in their diseases. The medicines we take just keep us from feeling the symptoms, but what if we could actually have a better day and be rid of what is causing our disease? Marcia and others are living proof that it is not only possible, but it is a reality.

Marcia is one of thousands of people who are well and living a happy life. She can go where she wants, wear what she wants, and eat what she wants and is no longer bound by reactions and fear of perfumes and foods.

On her journey to get well, she tried many alternative therapies and eastern medicine modalities and other ancient spiritual traditions, even astrology and mantras. All the while it presented the false hope of getting well, but she just became more ill and more stressed and less able to enjoy life. Then something she never expected and certainly was not "into" was responsible for healing her friend, Anita, and Marcia wanted that for herself, too.

What is a total miracle is that she literally found answers that really worked, not just empty promises. This book is something everyone who cares about people should read. Whether you are sick and trying to get well, or whether you just are curious as to how real miracles happen today, or perhaps if you have a friend who has been suffering with illness and seems to be losing hope. It is a small investment of time with great rewards to learn the truth.

The media presents those who believe in God as some backward, not "with it" crowd of bigots, and that is so far from the truth. This book is a beautifully honest and forthright account of how someone who was into everything anti-christian found out that a loving relationship with God is the literally the way to health and happiness. Marcia had been involved in many of the "in" spiritual practices to which people flock today, and they always seemed to present a peace, but when you stop to think about it, it was a peace that did not "stick" under stress. They looked good, talked good and felt good, but in the end did not make her well. And yet in simple faith through a small rural ministry that now has become one of the cutting edge centers of authority on allergies, environmental illness and the healing of disease, Marcia is well today and has been for many years. This book is her personal story with detailed help and information on how she walked out of illness into healthy living, and continues to be in health today.

Many people are looking for spiritual answers, and because of bad experiences in church or with people who did not practice what they preached, and how the media presents Christians, they think it is a dead lifeless religion. Even if that is how you see it, you owe it to yourself to do an unbiased read through with an open mind. You are so worth another chance, and this book is not to be missed by anyone who wants real answers to getting well.

I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed Anita Hill's story of her recovery from MCS/EI and other physical and psychological diseases, many of which are considered incurable today. People really do get well, and miracles do still happen. I'm glad Marcia took the time to help us not just by sharing her own story, but in such a way that it can help anyone find out how to get well and start living in freedom again.

I purchased this book after seeing the author on Fox and Friends. It definitely opened my eyes to the types of chemicals and toxins that are in our environment that ultimately end up in our bodies. As a nursing mother of a 5 month old I was pleased to learn steps I can take to keep our home and myself less toxic with the ultimate goal of keeping my baby healthy for years to come.

The book does seem to be repetitive at times and can be a bit daunting only due to the large chemical words constantly used- but how can you get around that. I was hoping there would be more info on how to detoxify our bodies besides eating vegetables and fruits washed down with some green tea. It does have a great reference section. With this book and a website - the green guide- I learned about in the book, I have already started making changes around our house. Just today I was looking at the ingredients in my son's sunscreen and found that it has chemicals that has shown to affect the development of the brain and reproductive organs in laboratory rats! Needless to say I found a much safer sunscreen. I also found that my shampoo and conditioner has one of the "7 Ugly Ingredients to Avoid in Personal Care Products"

Overall it is very educational, eye opening, and if you are looking to improve your health I highly recommend this book.

Dr. Gaynor's newest book takes up where Dr. Gaynor's Cancer Prevention Program left off. I was amazed at the science showing not only how toxins are found in places I'd never have guessed(eg.some lipsticks have lead) but that safe alternatives exist for all of them. The roster of famous MDs who endorsed the book reads like a Whose Who--Dr Mehmet Oz(You- The Owner's Manuel), Dr Michael Osborne(President of Strang Cancer Prevention Center),Dr Mimi Guarnieri(Scripps Institute),Dr William Rhea( environmental medicine specialist). That's good enough for me.
