One of the best choices

Review Date: 2007-06-11
As a professor of environmental health science, I find this text to be one of the most comprehensive, balanced, and science-rich texts avaialble. The third edition is the best yet, with minor typos, etc. corrected from previous editions. I also like the balance struck between environmental science and public health in this text. What I have usually found when reviewing texts for course use, is that they over emphasize one area or the other. The new chapter on disaster preparedness is a plus. The science rich presentation is well thought out and balanced. It provides just the right amount of challenge and knitting together of various scientific disciplines to be appropriate for my junior/senior level and graduate students.

How about a discount?

Rowman & Littlefield titles are not discounted by Amazon. Why? Are they an academic press? So I went to the university library and got a copy there to check it out. It's excellent material; consistently good from essay to essay. On that basis I would buy the book for future reference if it weren't so darn expensive. I know Rowman & Littlefield ain't paying huge royalties to the editors who in any case draw their principal income from the university. So why does the consumer get stuck with paying the premium for an anthology such as this? C'mon trade books are discounted; why not books such as this one? Again, with the usual Amazon discount I would have bought this book straight away and not even have bothered with the library edition. I spend thousands of dollars a year on books, CDs, and other media; it's part of my job. But please give us a break on the price.

curtain call...

Review Date: 2007-11-24
Simply the best book on mine water treatment. Period. I have been a consulting engineer dealing with environmental problems for over 20 years now - and this is my "go to" book on the subject.

Yes, there is a high reliance on empirical equations... But the reality is that most data sets in the mine water remediation field do not allow a more detailed analysis.

Globally, the mining industry is grappling with a huge paradigm shift as remediation costs are increasingly internalized as part of the "cost of doing business" rather than a cost that can be (hypothetically) externalized and avoided. Mine waste projects typically deal on time scales of decades and centuries and this is where natural treatment solutions (like the ones described in this book) really come to the forefront.

If you are in the mining industry, or deal with mine wastes, you need this book on your shelf. If a better book can be written, I welcome the authors; otherwise I would consider this to be the best that can be written on the subject without a quantum leap in data collection.

Simply the best in the field; there are no encores.

Jessica Savage is confined to a wheelchair, but that doesn't keep her from being a successful lawyer and a romantic heroine. Mac McReady is the cop assigned to protect her against the threats of a stalker. Gripping suspense, touching romance, and memorable characters make Moving Violations a great read.

From ventilation systems or the lack thereof to breeding grounds for germs
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-20
Bacteria and mold may lurk in office carpets, the heating system, and other places causing allergy and asthma symptoms, while vapors emitted by furniture and equipment add other symptoms. Other books focus on the home; finally here's a book to focus on the place adults spend most of their daily lives, the office. From ventilation systems or the lack thereof to breeding grounds for germs, MY OFFICE IS KILLING ME! THE SICK BUILDING SURVIVAL GUIDE doesn't just help identify problems; it tells what to do about them.
