Why you must educate yourself about GMO's
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-05
This book was is sold at a low price to fund the tireless work of Dr. Mae Wan Ho and the International Science Panel as they research and document the incredibly scary state our governments and large corporations are leading us into. The book presents the science around genetically modified food production and it's consequences in a straight-forward, comprehensive manner. The second half of the book presents a model of how food could be produced in a safer, more balanced way, while still providing enough for the world. I was much more convinced about the looming problem of GMO's and have decided to eat only organic food since reading this book. It's one of my socio-political-health decisions.

An Excellent Primer for Anyone Interested in Noise
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-03
This book is both engaging and informative. Written for non-engineers, this book is an excellent resource for a wide range of interested parties, regardless of their educational background. Consultants, citizen activists, municipal planners, and concerned enforcement personnel can all profit from this non-technical, non-mathematical treatise on all aspects of community noise. Mr. Cowan has taken an exceptionally complex discipline, and given an overview that can round out almost anyone's understanding of the field, and it's filled with plenty of genuinely interesting facts. Herewith is a list of the chapter titles: Acoustic Terminology; Noise Descriptors; Noise Measurement; Noise Control Terminology and Design; Noise Regulations, Guidelines, and Ordinances; Common Noise Sources; and Construction Issues. Included is a well-written and well-reasoned Model Municipal Noise Ordinance. Even the chapter titles don't do justice to all that's covered in the Handbook. In the Acoustic Terminology chapter, there's a concise section on the Hearing Mechanism, and the mechanics of hearing loss. He weaves in fascinating facts such as: the middle ear ossicles not only carry the acoustic signal to the inner ear, but actually amplify the signal more than 20 times between the eardrum and the oval window. You may consider yourself an expert in some area relating to noise, but it's almost a certainty that you'll learn a number of new things from this book. This book could be a tremendous tool for the motivated complainant who is faced with a noise source that is exempted from the local noise ordinance. If they want to approach the problem politically, in meetings, this will provide a crash education that can mold them into a knowledgeable advocate in a very short time. Put some power in your hands, as, after all, knowledge is power

This is an authoritative, up-to-the-minute reference which provides vital safety information on over 1000 commercial chemicals. The volume exhaustively explores the current data on fire and chemical compatibility, response methods for incidents involving chemical spills and fires, and personnel and worksite safety monitoring and sampling. Shows professionals working with hazardous chemicals, how to prevent accidents, and how best to respond to accidents when they occur. The handbook draws on research from both industry and government. Also including: describes risks associated with fire and explosion, chemical reactivity, and long-term chemical exposure, coordinates chemical hazards data with relevant emergency response information, defines key internationally used terms, in addition to those used by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), outlines emergency medical protocols for dealing with chemical exposure, as well as procedures for containing an incident, highlights material safety data sheets (MSDS) that reflect actual practice of specific companies, evaluates personal protection methods and field monitoring instrumentation. This handbook has served as a major source of safe handling information that our company has used for numerous industrial consulting assignments. We have found this to be an invaluable reference for our technical library.

This text is a one stop shop for those responders who want to know what HAZMAT is really about. Anyone interested in furthering their abilities and understanding of Hazardous Chemicals needs this book. It is not too technical for those few who think you can become too technical when responding to emergencies, but opens the door for those of us, who take our work seriously.

HazCom Training Program
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-31
The OSHA HazComm standard has been around for many years now (relatively speaking) and has become one of those things that isnýt glamorous any more (ergonomics is). Your peers do not speak in HazComm terms anymore; everyone has moved on. You think you have a handle on HazComm, you purchased a HazComm video training tape, management of the training has been relegated to Human Resources, and you have a summer intern photocopying MSDSýs and putting them in binders. Well, read Mr. McManusýs book and see how wrong you can be.

Mr. McManusýs (and his co-author Gilda Greenýs) book is the most comprehensive treatment of the HazComm requirements I have ever read. If you have read the entire US Federal OSHA HazComm standard, you know how daunting it is; Mr. McManus provides a very readable explanation of that standard as if ýreading between the linesý for you. In this book is extensive coverage of all aspects of the HazComm regulation and HazComm training; additionally, there are sections on learning and effective methods of training (as this book is about training).

One particularly valuable section of this book is the great deal of helpful guidance on the problems with missing information on material safety data sheets (MSDSýs), how to deal with the declaration of trade secrets, and what can be about it. I am sure that if you have worked with MSDSýs, you have run into the situation of missing information, declarations of trade secrets, or confusing information on many of these documents.

If you are small business and cannot afford those fancy video tapes or you donýt have the resources of a consultant or a full time professional, this is an ideal book. It is written clearly in fundamental language (there are some areas of the MSDS that just donýt lend themselves to simple terms, such as the toxicity information), and the McManus/Green team do their best to bring the more complex topics to terms that are easier to understand; this is particularly valuable if you have to turn around and explain it to a bunch of employees who have to work with the chemicals.

As for those difficult questions that have been around for a long time and never get answered, seasoned safety and health professionals will find the answers to those questions in this book. Mr. McManus has addressed all those questions directly. At the end of each chapter is a ýQuestion and Answerý section, and this is the part of the book I found to be the most valuable. Things I have wondered about for years, Mr. McManus has address in this section.

This is almost a complete package for a small business owner, and is primarily written from that perspective. However, from the perspective of a seasoned safety engineer and industrial hygienist, it has proven to be a most valuable resource for me. This thin, tall book is a gem. Read what you have been missing about the HazComm.

Packed with references, scientific studies, and sound logic!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-15
I hate to see "healing" in a book title. I expect to find a new-age, self-help book of the "win friends, influence people" variety. But ignore the title, this is a serious work! It's packed with references, scientific studies, sound logic, economic enlightenment, and quotes. This is the ultimate doom and gloom book (I think I have read them all). I highly recommend it!

This book is an excellent desk reference and text in the area of health and environmental risk analysis. The appendices are excellent and provide over 25 tables related to the field. Included are tables listing various RCRA and CERCLA hazardous substances. Also in the appendices are tables related to hazardous air pollutants health effects such as subchronic and chronic toxicity, and carcinogenicity. The text covers the latest methods used in hazard identification, consequence analysis, and exposure assessment. Methods to estimate toxicity of chemicals based on structural activity relationships are also covered. I highly recommend the book to anyone working in the field.
