A valuable reference tool and textbook
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-25
Louis Pol and Rick Thomas have rendered a valuable service with this book. For demographers it demonstrates how their methods, concepts and data can be applied to important health and health care issues; for health care professionals, it shows that the "demographic perspective" yields valuable insights into a wide range of health and health care issues. The book is clearly written, well-organized, and has a very useful set of references. The book can serve both as a reference tool for practicing professionals and as a textbook for upper-division and graduate courses dealing with health and population.

Salem witches and Lyme's disease...Who would have thought??
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-05
Salem witches and Lyme's disease...Who would have made this connection???This book is a paradigm shifting work. I can see why it has been controversial. It contains innovative, outside the box thinking. Lyme disease carried back to Europe from North America after 1492 is as good an explanation for the appearance of the Devil's Mark there during the 1500's as any I have read. Meticulously researched, this book adds to the environmental explanations for the persecution of witches, helping to make some of the saddest times in human history more understandable. It shows the events in Salem in 1692 in a new way that compliments pre-existing social theories. It also shows that witch-hunts are not historic relicts pushed into some dusty forgotten corner but still exist as part of the mentality and actions of some members of modern day American society. All in all a scholarly work as well as a good and entertaining read.

I have found Saperstein's book to be very timely and informative. It sounds the alarm and provides the action plan for anyone who is concerned with water quality and their health today. I think this book belongs not only in every organics and health foods store, but in every home as well.

Inspiring approach for teaching ecology to kids
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-04
I've used parts of this book occasionally in a series of professional development workshops for K12 science teachers and have always been impressed by both the content of the book and how it inspires teachers to consider new approaches when teaching ecology. Instead of presenting a series of unrelated lessons, the book is organized around three modules around the themes: food webs, decomposition, and growth. Each module includes a series of activities that students can become actively involved with by asking questions, making meaningful observations, and evaluating results. It's just the kind of work that we all need to become independent learners, and the modules are supported by assessment ideas and examples that will help teachers figure out what their students have gained in the process. The teachers that I've worked with have selected this book more than any other to use for themselves. There are really very few books like it and should be a part of every upper elementary and middle school science teacher's ecology bookshelf.

Chemistry on a budget
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-24
I am a teacher with few supplies at my disposal. This book showed me ways to use common items from a grocery store to demonstrate chemistry without spending a fortune or needing hard to find supplies. The book includes a section on safety, which is very important. It also describes why each experiment works the way it does. This book is best for the elementary or middle school science teacher.
