Inspiring approach for teaching ecology to kids

I've used parts of this book occasionally in a series of professional development workshops for K12 science teachers and have always been impressed by both the content of the book and how it inspires teachers to consider new approaches when teaching ecology. Instead of presenting a series of unrelated lessons, the book is organized around three modules around the themes: food webs, decomposition, and growth. Each module includes a series of activities that students can become actively involved with by asking questions, making meaningful observations, and evaluating results. It's just the kind of work that we all need to become independent learners, and the modules are supported by assessment ideas and examples that will help teachers figure out what their students have gained in the process. The teachers that I've worked with have selected this book more than any other to use for themselves. There are really very few books like it and should be a part of every upper elementary and middle school science teacher's ecology bookshelf.

I am a teacher with few supplies at my disposal. This book showed me ways to use common items from a grocery store to demonstrate chemistry without spending a fortune or needing hard to find supplies. The book includes a section on safety, which is very important. It also describes why each experiment works the way it does. This book is best for the elementary or middle school science teacher.

The Ecology of Aggression by Arnold Goldstein of Syracuse University is excelent. It has a thorough preface detailing past theories of aggression and he traces the lineage of the interactionist theory of aggression that he writes about in this book. The book shows how specific parts of the environment (divided into microlevel, mesolevel and macrolevel of both physical ecology and social ecology) play a role in specific aggressive behaviors. It also has a section called Intervention with principles that can be used in Environmental Design and Interpersonal Contact to prevent aggression.
The books clearly communicates author's conclusions while remaining easy to read, which is rare in scholarly work in this area. It serves both as an excelent introduction and a practical handbook to keep around.

The world is changing, but are public health practitioners?

The winds of global environmental change are blowing upon my profession. But are environmental health specialists smelling the foul air that is the future? Or, are they too busy reviewing hot dog stands and commercial dishwasher models, selling cookbooks at their association meetings, approving sprawl-inducing septic systems, and failing to make the connection between global ecological changes and the predicted impacts on their local public health jurisdictions? Is public health practice in the U.S. doomed by its under-funded focus on cig smoke and health, the uninsured, and heart-stopping fat consumption?
While this book will probably be read by mostly PH grad students, the old timers doing time in state and local environmental health depts should take a close look, especiallly chapters on info sources and GIS. For those involved in international env health work, this book is an excellent starting point for a reintroduction to the environment in environmental health work. To its credit, Calif has begun the analysis of climate impacts on water resources, vectors, the epidemiology of mortality from elevated temps, etc. But much more is needed and this book serves as the groundwork for those in the profession who have made that important connection between (failing)ecosystems and the public health of a human population. Following the book, I can see the need in CA for a statewide dialogue on demographics, migration, and local public health.
The only missing topic (due to the pub date) in this release is the environmental health impacts of war, though the chapter on cholera, which is returning with a vengence in war-torn Iraq, is highly relevant.
THAT topic may require a separate book by the time the U.S. has fully ravaged that country, but Seidel introduces this topic in Environmental Health: From Global to Local (2005), edited by Frumkin.

Great price for this textbook. I needed this book for one of my EHS classes and found it on here for way cheaper than I could get it for at my local book store or even other textbook places online. Book arrived quickly and in great condition, was even able to sell it back to a third-party site for almost what I paid for it! Would recommend anyone to look to Amazon first when buying textbooks.

I learned a great deal from this book-from beginning to end. Reed is not only a thinker of great scope but also of consistency. It's a little hard to tell that Reed is a philosopher and not just a psychologist, given how little philosophy he cites and how few purely conceptual arguments he engages in. But his theoretical consistency does give the book a strong philosophical cast.
Don't just read the first half of the book, where Reed lays out his conception of ecological psychology and explains how psychology is a much more ancient phenomenon in evolutionary history than we are led to believe by current cognitive science. The second half of the book offers interesting references to archeological and anthropological work for those whose primary interest is in psychology. It also describes early development in human childhood in a way that seems well aware of comparative-cultural issues. Thus the second part of the book could be interesting whether or not one is sympathetic to ecological psychology as a research program.

Few other books in recent years have presented environmental chemical issues with such overwhelming scientific force. Hagen and Worman conclusively debunk the hysteria surrounding Alar, asbestos, and dioxin in this beautifully crafted and extensively documented trilogy--a masterful, thorough account, and a must read if you want the real story of the "classic" cases of environmental alarmism!
