This is the book for anybody having children who wet their beds. It provides a good introduction to the different causes for bed-wetting and guidance on how to address them.
In our family we followed the program with the alarm system, since our boy's bed-wetting was due to deep sleep. Using the positive reinforcement and guidelines outlined in the book, our son was dry in less than 2 months. I just wish I had seen this book sooner.

This is truly an excellent, in depth report of how and why children remain at the bedwetting stage in their lives. It is a commitment to a regimen that is necessary to get beyond the wetting stage. I have an 8 year-old male that is a very heavy sleeper. I sometimes think I've comitted more into this than he has. While the Kegel exercises work, and we made a rhyme of it...(we call it doing the Three Pee) it has controlled his over-wetting on most nights. So, our nights of getting up to change sheets are slowly becoming history. In my opinion, if the child is truly committed to being dry, this program WILL work! It's an excellent read for the biological minded. Share it with your twinkler. They'll enjoy understanding the science behind the wet bed!

Replaces expensive enuresis resolution programs, best reference available to the layman on the subject. We consulted numerous pediatricians and pediatric urologists who were no help. We found the book after enrolling in an Ann Landers reccomended program- could have saved the money- this book was much more helpful. One note of caution- there is a very bad typo in the paperback edition.DITROPAN SYRUP IS 5mg/5ml NOT 5mg/ml. That could be a dangerous error for those interpolating their dosages for tablets.

We are proud to see that "Getting to Dry" has consistantly been the best selling book on the topic of bedwetting here at Amazon.com and after the first year of publication, "Getting to Dry" is now in its second printing.

In response to a previous review that points out a typographical error in the Ditropan graphic, we would like to assure our readers that this has been corrected in the second printing which also includes additional updated material and information.

The whole idea of infant potty training seemed crazy until i thought about all those countries where no one uses diapers. Sure, it's a little different here, but the basic principles are still working. We decided to do attachment parenting, which has made it easier to infant potty train. My 3 month old goes diaperless everynight. Days when we stay home, he goes diaperless. I won't say there aren't a few accidents, but i will say it's amazing how few of them there are. This whole process depends on the parents putting in a lot of care and being really patient. We started at around 3 weeks old and now our son cues us on when to take him to the potty. He pees in public restrooms, in the bathroom sink, and in our baby bjorn potty (which is great for a 3 month old!).
There is a much larger (and more expensive) book out by the same author on the same subject, but that book really isn't all that necessary: this book covers it all. All you need to know to do it if you are sure you want to do it. If you aren't sure, the other book "Infant Potty Training" will convince you that it can be done. I've heard that most babies who are trained as infants take themselves to the potty as soon as they can walk...well, we'll see about that!

We started when my son was around 1 month old. He's been cueing us to take him when he has to go as of a couple weeks later. What's even better- we do it part-time. If we're at the park or out-and-about, he's come to understand that he has to go in the diaper- but we always go potty at home. He's never had diaper rash and we've got a great system. There's no doubt in my mind that as soon as he can physically get himself to the potty himself, he will. He even tries to hold it if I'm slow to respond!

This is so much easier & nicer than "conventional" toilet training!

This wonderful book should be required reading for any parent with a child who wets the bed. It explains to parents what bedwetting is all about and how to get your child dry. As parents, we all wish there was some wonder drug or magic treatment to help our child get dry. This book explains that medical research continues to show that a bedwetting alarm is the only way to "speed up the clock" and help your child get dry.

Yes, I like most parents, have tried restricting fluids, waking my child to go to the bathroom, setting an alarm clock and DDAVP (a synthetic hormone/drug that reduces urine output for one night). These things were not effective at getting my child permanently dry. A bedwetting alarm is significantly better than any of these approaches and around 80% of children can get permanently dry with an alarm.

This book talks about how to effectively use an alarm - which is very important if you are serious about getting your child dry.

This book should be a pamphlet. Step 1, buy a pee alarm. Step 2. use it
Hardly any other useful advice, just reasons why anything other than a pee alarm is a bad idea.

This is a great book. The charting in the book works well and encourages children. Excellent shipping speed.

If your child has a problem with wetting the bed, BUY THIS BOOK. After speaking with my child's pediatrician and urologist and getting little information from them, I bought this wonderful book. I was so happy to finally read a well written, easy to understand resource from an expert. The information is easy to understand and really helps parents with what to do about their child's wetting. I was happy to finally get the facts about bedwetting - instead of the shady web sites that keep popping up that try and get you to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for their magic "correction".

I was tired of hearing "don't worry, he will grown out of it". I bought an alarm that was recommended for less than $100, followed the advice in the book, and my son now sleeps dry after only 10 weeks. He is such a different child. Thank you so much.

Unless you are working with an alarm right now, or planning to in the very near future, don't bother with this book. It has nothing else to offer. It's title should be "How to use a Bedwetting Alarm."

We are not ready for an alarm yet and I did not get ANY other useful information from this book. Try Waking Up Dry instead.

This little book is short and simple. The main problem is that it is clearly aimed at children who may not even be old enough to read it for themselves. Not that there's anything wrong with a grown-up reading to them, but encopresis affects many children that are over the first-grade reading level. (The little boy in the book appears to be approximately first or second grade.)

Unfortunately, there is very little out there in the way of useful, informative literature that addresses the medical and psychological aspects of these problems. Dr. Galvin is to be commended and congratulated for his efforts and insights on how to comfort, encourage, and challenge children (and parents) who deal with encopresis. Believe it or not, with patience and perseverance, this problem does end, and there is life after it.

I read the story to my 4 1/2 year old son, after months of fruitless efforts to help him. He immediately identified with the boy in the story. I took him into the bathroom, intending to start with the first step suggested, however, my son proceeded through all the steps right then and there, and has not had an accident since! I couldn't believe it! I recommend this book to anyone with a child who has this problem.

We have read through this book and find that it can be useful as an aid to opening discussions with your child about encopresis. Having said that, we feel that it is aimed at a very low age group, who may have difficulties with reading in the first instance. The one problem we have is that our encopretic children are above the elementary reading level and therefore got bored and distracted very easily.

One situation that arises with encopresis is that children tend to feel very alone and afraid, because of the amount of pressure heaped on to them at an important stage in their development. This book goes some way to addressing those feelings, but if you are considering it for a child over 5-6 years of age (which is of course the very age where encopresis is causing its biggest headaches) then maybe have the book on a side stand somewhere, and try to talk to your child on a more personal level.

We were sent this book by our pediatrician and it was very helpful to our 8-year-old. The reading level was easier than she is used to but she was able to identify with Andrew. The book normalized her issues (hiding panties, accidents at school) since she feels like she's the only one, no matter how much we tell her she isn't. There's a book about it!

My son really enjoyed this book. It helped him see that he was not alone. It also seems to have helped with the soiling.

I read this book loooking for tips on how to use a bed alarm. I found very little information about that. The book, written by a urologist, is very focused on the diseases and abnormalities that can cause bedwetting. It includes many distressing stories of patients who were plagued by by urinary problems, infections, and erectile dysfunction as adults because the cause of their childhood bedwetting had not been treated. It goes so far as to say that if your child's bedwetting stops by itself or with the use of a bed alarm, you should still have a doctor investigate the cause of the bedwetting. It is my understanding that the vast majority of bedwetters have no underlying pathology, so the emphasis of this book seems unbalanced.

I found this book to be very informative on the various factors that can cause a childs bedwetting. I also strongly agree with the authors view on how important it is to support your child and obtain help for him or her early on. However, I was looking for more techniques on how to help my "deep sleeper" stay dry and very few were offered. This was a good book for parents to start with, those who are just beginning to research the problem.

Found the book very informative. The medical information was in layman's terms. The book was easy to read. Very good in helping to understand all aspects associated with bedwetting behavior - physical, emotional, and sleep related. Was able to present helpful information to the doctor to get what my son needed.

Although the explanation of encopresis was adequate, and the overall treatment gudelines were consistent with today's literature, all of the research and case studies presented were from the 1970's, with information that is significantly outdated. I think there would be a lot of controversy if these cases were presented to the medical community today. The case studies were actually a little disturbing.
