Valuable specialized little book!

A highly valuable little book, not only for sufferers and their family members (and caretakers), but also for general medical practicioners, nurses, med students, and students of physiology, biology, anatomy, chemistry and other fields of science related to humans and human diseases. This little book is probably the most thorough to be found on this subject matter.

It should be studied more commonly, WORLDWIDE, than it has been up to now. (Non-English speaking countries, med students, medical establishments, and researchers, in particular, should have discovered this valuable, concise, material by now, yet it remains a fairly rare little book. It might also be sent as a gift to those programs, institutions, and libraries abroad.)

CHAPTERS: Definition, Morphology, Etiologies, Prevalence and Heredity, Clinical Presentation and Symptoms, Clinical Signs, Diagnostic Studies, Differential Diagnosis, Malignant Transformation, Classification, Anatomic Distribution (Peritoneal), Extra Abdominal/Extra Pelvic, Medications for Pain Control, Surgical Treatment, Infertility Hormonal Changes, Peritoneal Fluid Studies, Immunologic Factors, Abortion, The No Treatment Option, Medical Therapy, Surgery for Endometriosis Associated Infertility, Infertility-Superovulation, Assisted Reproduction, Recurrent Endometriosis, Summary, Bibliography.

Highly recommended on this subject.

Make Yourself Better! Defy Your Doctors!
Helpful Votes: 17 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 1997-04-10
If your doctor tells you it is all in your head, buy this book. If you have heard, "Get pregnant and that will make you feel better," don't do it - buy this book first!!

There are alternatives to this disease. There are doctors who know it and understand it. And this book is a collection of current scientific data, medicines, procedures, diets and stories from women who are going through it, beat it, or found their own solutions to it.

This is the manual for women who suspect they may have this disease or for any woman who hurts too much every month with no explanation except... gee, take the pill. Don't! You have options!! Read this book and you'll hear about diet, excercise, laproscopy, acupuncture, and more, each with their own case studies of women who tried these answers.

Mixed in with the hard data and the emotional retellings of endo is the comic strip, "Joe with Endo" - where the man has the endo and hears the messages from a woman doctor. The reversal of roles shows the idiocy of the messages told to sufferers of this disease. It's great!

Remember - information is power, and your doctor may have less information than you if you read this book... good luck

Step Right Up & Take Your Chances is an honest and insightful account of the author's experiences with endometriosis, infertility, and adoption. I laughed and cried as I read and hoped for a happy ending.
I recommend this book for mothers and expectant mothers. It is not only a great practical resource and guide to help address the issues associated with endometriosis, infertility, and adoption but also provides the personal aspect of coping with the downside while working and hoping for the future.
The author was entertaining, factual, and inspirational.
This was great reading.

While there is some good material in this book, it is overshadowed by the amount of cutesy babbling. Answers to questions are rambling and often inconsistent. The photos look like bad photocopies. The fairy tale framework wears thin quickly; I never figured out if the king is a doctor, a husband, a narrative device or God. That said, there is some good content on some of the recovery issues involved in a hysterecomy, particularily in the hysterectomy is pre-menopausal. The website is much better than the book.

There's a Killer Web Site that Goes WITH this book

.... which I REALLY appreciated; when told I needed a hysterectomy, I was freaked out and immediately went to Amazon to research books. I chose Dr. Streicher's The Essential Guide to Hysterectomy then found this one; but then learned that the author was the founder of the AMAZING web site for women, www.hystersisters.com

The web site was EXTREMELY helpful. Between the web site, the book and Dr. Streichers advice, I decided not to have my hysterectomy, at least not now. I owe it ALL to being able to learn from other women, especialy those on hystersisters.com

Not the best, but not bad

After being scheduled for a complete hysterectomy, I started scouring the books available for any and all info I could find. I appreciated that this is woman to woman first hand information. But medically, it isn't very helpful. Skip this book and instead go to the hystersisters web site.

Silly, but good info

The information inside is well worth overlooking any flaws in writing or the silly "fairy tale" style. Any woman going through the turmoil associated with a hysterectomy needs to read this book.

I found this book after my surgery. Prior to taking my short term leave from work, I had spent almost 2 months talking with several friends and co-workers about the upcoming hysterectomy...They all had plenty to say about their issues before the surgery and the outcome(6-8 weeks later)...What they NEGLECTED to mention was the ALL IMPORTANT RECOVERY. While this book is not medical advice...it is a wonderful support group...and there is a website to follow that covers a plethora of info, topics, forums, discussions and opportunity to meet great women who have "been there" or are experiencing the same issues. This book is WONDERFUL mental therapy!!! Well worth the read and price...would make a wonderful gift for a friend after surgery!!!

I found this book to be very technical and a hard read. I was hoping for a quick reference book to access when I wanted to look something up regarding what to eat. There are a few recipes but they seem to oppose what I have read about the diet for endometriosis. Many of the recipes contain eggs and other dairy products which are supposed to be pro-inflammatory.

The general scientific nutritional advice is good, but it does seem to relate to general health problems. A good book if you want to find out about nutrition.

I bought this book shortly after being diagnosed with endometriosis and having a lap to confirm stage III. Prior to my dx, I had been trying to concieve for 2 yrs and tried acupuncture, herbs, supplements and various types of fertility diets. This book explains the condition in almost academic detail, but that's what I like about it. It takes awhile to get through and I started by reading the most relevant chapters first on the condition and how it effects the reproductive system. Then I went straight to implementing the diet recommendations. I followed the diet suggestions that I felt best applied to my symptoms and goal of getting pregnant and of course preventing the return of the endo. I felt great on the diet but it's hard to say if it was the surgery or the diet or a combination of both but I was pregnant 2 months later. That pregnancy ended in miscarriage but I am back on the diet and actually going back to read some of the chapters I skipped over. I still think it's the best resource book you can own on endometriosis and recommend to everyone I know suffering from this mysterious and painful condition.

Best Book I Ever Bought!

This is seriously the best book I ever bought. There is so much great information in here. Not just for women with endo, but for almost any health issue. Everything is hormone related. If you have endo and you suffer from other things too, I bet they will all go away if you follow the advice in the book. I am pretty anal and follow it to a T. Once I did the elimination part, I felt so good that I decided to keep my diet that way. I give myself 1 cheat a week now, but I will never go back to the way that I was. If you would have asked me 6 months ago if I were going to be able to keep it up I would have said no way. I feel so good that I know I will ALWAYS keep it up!

This book is absolutely incredible!!!

If you buy just one book about Endometriosis, please let it be this one! I have read a lot of books about this disease and this is still the one that goes into the most detail and the best explanation of the disease process. Don't be fooled by the title....this isn't just a nice little cookbook. This is a scientific study into the relationship between Endometriosis and the food, chemicals and substances we consume, and why so many of them are inflammatory to this condition. I found this work to be absolutely fascinating and invaluable.

In fact I was so inspired by it that I flew to London to meet with the author myself for an apoointment and really had a wonderful experience. I found Dian to be extremely compassionate and knowledgeable, and she seemed to be able to finish my sentences before I did! What a great insight this lady has. Because of her I discovered that I had many food intolerances I didn't know I had and cutting them out has made a huge difference to my pain and energy levels. Thank you Dian! This book should be renamed The Endometriosis Bible, because if you are serious about taking control of your disease process, you need to buy this book!

I am a 35-year-old African American female and have suffered from fibroids for over 7 years. Almost everyone in my family does to some degree. Various quacks have prescribed painkiller after painkiller. Then finally I had a surgery and conceived, but lost our child at 18 weeks. A year later, a fibroid was back with an ovarian cyst. I did not want more surgery, so during the holiday I order this book and started the plan. During my recent ultrasound, examine less than 3 weeks later the small fibroid was gone and the cyst partial collapsed (part fluid it was solid) and shrunk. I feel great and whole for the first time in a long time. Thank you for having the courage to show us a different way. The book was balanced with options and I will recommend it to all I know.

This book was a true eye-opener for me! I recommend this book to everyone I know who has Endo. I have used it's wisdom enthusiastically, and with fabulous results.

As an effect of this book, I turned to yoga. I changed my diet. I did alot of things differently. And let me tell you ladies, if you experience pain are you're sick of taking those pills, then get this book and read it every night. Make it your tummy bible!
I went from periods that were horrible: endless aching and pain, cold sweats, dizziness, diarrhea, shakes, even vomiting! (and 4+ pain killers, hot water bottles, and teas) to periods that were virtually PAINLESS. Lifestyle changes and diet, it really helped me out. Now I can work like everyone else and I don't need a single pain killer. Not one. Today I had my period and went to play raquetball. WOW!

What is most heartening about this book is just how it makes you fell informed about yourself. We all grow up feeling kind of helpless about the mysterious female pain of menstruation, waving helplessly at our family or partners over the years. it doesn't need to be like that!
It takes time too: my changes didn't occur overnight, but within half a year my periods were bearable enough I made it through without pills. A year later the pain was all gone. So there ya have it!

Here's a tip: NO BEEF! Well, try to get the red meats out of your diet. Especially not within ten days of your period. You'll see.... ;)

I have to admit, I've done a thorough skimming of the book rather than a complete read. But she knows her stuff and has some really helpful lists and suggestions. As a heavy bleeder and someone who was diagnosed with small fibroids (6-week uterus), I'm really anemic (10.2) and have started eating foods from the "good" lists (which, incidentally, coincide with the detoxification/cleansing diet my nutritionist gave me). There are quite a few de-stressing and exercise suggestions, and I just haven't been able to find that kind of advice anywhere else. If you can't do it all, there are lots of things to pick and choose from that are likely to help.

This book is a MUST have for any woman suffering from fibroids. After two surgeries i knew i had to take matters into my own hands. I read this book changed my diet, started used herbs, and exercise and my symptoms have disappeared. i tell anyone i know to tell anyone they know with fibroids to read this book. I agree with chigacojess that western medicine can do but so much. My doctor was insisiting that i have a hysterectomy. I'm 31 . NO WAY! Now he looks at me in amazement. I am no longer anemic, my fibroids have decreased in size and he can't explain it.Thanks Dr. susan Lark. She saved my uterus, and i am forever grateful.

I have had endometriosis for six years now. "The Endometriosis Answer Book" was very helpful for me when I was first diagnosed, but now there are new books that have updated information. This book was written in 1989 and should not be purchased when there are books out there with new findings, new answers and new hope. The "Endometriosis Sourcebook" would be the better choice.

Though others have released "natural approach" publications dealing with alternative remedies for the illness in the past, this is the first book that truly offers an all-encompassing guide to many (if not all) of the multifaceted therapies available to those suffering from the disease. The information is comprehensive, validating, empowering and interactive, as well as accurate. Well-written and easily understood by all audiences, this book is an invaluable resource and a welcome addition to any Endo patient's library.

I love this book! I have almost every endo book written in the past few years and this is one of my favorites. It is full of a lot of great info and ideas of natural treatments to try. The only complaint is that info on one subject can be found in a lot of different places in the book. Overall I highly recommend this book for those suffering with endo. I talked to a woman at an essential oil store who knew the writer and said she is well respected and knowledgable in the field of essential oils. I highly recommend this easy to read and very informative book.
