There are many, many nice people in the Thoroughbred industry. But if it solely comes to judging those in influential positions who can make positive change, the handling of the beautiful equine athletes after the finish line has been nothing short of criminal.
Bill Heller exposes the ties that the horse slaughter industry has to racing in this brutally honest and very important book for fans of the sport at any interest level.
And don't think for a second that the slaughterhouses who "process" the meat for foreign consumption become the final vestiges for the runners who are just not good enough, too old or battered to race anymore, or too old or just don't have the pedigree to stay in the breeding shed.
There are runners that have regal bloodlines and/or major stakes victories who plummet through into the sales ring to be sold for pennies on the dollar or sold privately for shipment to the plants; crammed together in double-decker semis, without adequate food and water and oftentimes even more brutally treated during the final hours before a bolt is fired into their heads, hopefully putting the Thoroughbreds quickly out of a misery that may have built up for years.
After the Finish Line is not an easy read. But there is some hope captured in several chapters, with Heller discussing the horse sanctuary and adoption movements, with a listing of organizations throughout North America.
You may not look at the regal days of the Triple Crown or Breeders' Cup Championships the same way after reading the book. It hopefully will get you involved in some way to assist those who have the resources to make a difference before that last race is run.

I have really been enjoying this book; not only what is written, but the pictures tell a story as well.
I am half Italian born in Brockton, Ma. but live on the west coast now. I guess I can only hope that the North End will still remain quaint and special in spite of our everchanging world.

I have always enjoyed the adult series of Left Behind books. The kids books are just as good. The kids interact with the characters from the adult series, experience the same events, etc. However, since the main characters are teens, these books can appeal to younger readers. So far, the stories haven't had the ups and downs that the adult series has had. The adult series has books that are a lot more boring than others. The kids series seems to be good in every book. These are not for really young kids, but would be appropriate for young teens. I enjoy them and I am an adult.

I'm actually reading book #11, second time around, and just ordered 19, 20, 21, & 22. By the time I get 19 & 20 I'll be finished with 18 again. Incidentally, I also just ordered the adult book #10 having read all the predecessors. I just can't stop reading these books once I start. Whoever said the "kids" books were up to age 12 forgot that they speak truth to all ages. I'm 62 years old with graduate degrees and they sure do hit my hot button. I hope they just keep coming! I love them.

The book Left Behind #18- "Darkening Skies" is a great book. It's about four kids who were originally Left Behind of the rapture of god's people. This is book number eighteen out of thirty-six. The 17th book was a thriller as they were on their trip to Israel. The 17th ends in suspense as nobody can find Tyson Ben-Judah. The 18th book tells about Judd in Israel and where Melissa can be found. In Israel, Judd finds a new friend, Samuel. Judd is betrayed by Samuel and runs into the Global Community. Will he escape the G.C., why did Samuel betray Judd, and two more of the Young Trib Force's friends die. Who? Find out by reading "Darkening Skies," the 18th Left Behind book.

A Heavenly Perspective on Islam and the Muslim People

First of all, I want to say at the outset of this review that as one whose teaching is often focused on the Antichrist spirit of Islamic theology and practice, as well as the coming judgment of Christ against the Muslim nations, Faisal Malick has written a very important book that calls all followers of Christ to see the other side of the equation. Even as the day will come when "a nation will be born in one day" and the Jewish people will corporately embrace Jesus as Messiah, so also will they be severely chastised before this happens. There are two sides to this equation. So also will it be with the Muslim peoples. When Christ returns, he will literally slay the enemies of Israel (His enemies) and decimate their nations. Despite the most commonly accepted teaching, these will be not primarily be the Western European nations but rather the Muslims nations that surround Israel. Yet even among the Muslim people's, a remnant will be saved. God's heart is for the Muslim peoples as much as it was for you and me while we were yet blind and in rebellion. Yet by his grace we were called. Thank You Father. Faisal does an excellent job of calling believers to the higher place of God's heavenly perspective. While not ignoring the fact that God will deal with the Muslim peoples, Faisal chooses instead to focus on the other side of the coin and calls us all into that essential place of intercession, where we look and act the most like our heavenly intercessor and Lord. Faisal also calls upon all believers to yield to the Holy Spirit's activity in our ministries and lives as we lovingly reach out to Muslims. While I would say that some of Faisal's claims (that a billion Muslims are about to come into the Kingdom) may come across as a bit televangelist hypey / pollyannaish, I simply see this as part of Faisal's positive personality and calling and I am happy to forgive his sometimes over-the-top prophetic enthusiasms. And mind you, I would love to be proven wrong, but Scripturally speaking, I do not see a revival of this degree. Instead, like Israel, the Scriptures seems to point us to a remnant being saved. But even a remnant among 1.6 Billion would be substantial and would represent an unheard-of in history revival. So despite my limited cautionary criticisms, overall, I see this book as being a crucial counter-balance to much of the acidic atmosphere that exists today within the Church toward the Muslim community. Five stars.

The Drifters by Michael Silverhawk peels the magnificently complicated layers of an epic story of "what if." In the grandest fashion of love and war, truth and justice, the power of knowledge with the intensity of focus, and the potential to learn the vast capabilities available, man's unshakable ability to amaze himself becomes evident. Told through the eyes of a hero, a warrior of light, we move from a modern day dilemma of right and wrong involving the fate of humanity into a futuristic landscape where each must claim the gifts of divine power as a true inheritance of human beings. To use the Golden Rule, man must recognize that true civilization exists when one has individual control over behavior with conscience as a guide, surpassing the restraints of socialization where the masses or government control conduct of the individual.
Silverhawk's fantastic adventure dazzles us with the splendor of a spiritual text transformed into a dynamic action work. Drifters are beings who move into lives and incarnations during their sleep periods, spanning lifetimes in other realms, with the purpose of guiding presences and societies there toward growth and evolution. As these heroic characters fight for the survival of all those who practice in the light, we learn that the paradox of God is that winning may not always seem so. In this intriguing and engaging piece of fast-paced drama, these questions reach out, spanning the time-space continuum: "what is enlightenment?" and "Who is the 'I am" who observes the mind, ego, feelings, and personality?"
Through the expansive teachings of Michael Silverhawk, we glean the connection to God with yin and yang, angels who never incarnate but aid humans, the masterful alpha and omega entity, and the final awareness that God will help those who do their best. When man masters himself he becomes his own sovereign republic where freedom is wrought with responsibilities. Lifetimes encompass emotional links to the Grand Matrix, and battles which present internally as well as with exterior manifestation. Each of our lives matters as we grow through the kaleidoscope of experiences. Our souls linked to the All that Is should fully engage as we observe and identify choices, knowing that each of us creates the color of destiny. The resolution states our surprise when we discover that the inquiry is not "why me, " but "why not me?" The Drifters presents a marvelous text of new age insight couched within the delightfully enjoyable framework of science fiction.

Thank you for sticking your head above the parapet Michael Silverhawk. There are more people out there that this will touch on a core level than are probably aware. Buy it, read it, live it!

This first in the Drifters trilogy is a bellwether novel, blending sci fi and the spiritual in a way I found to be quite unexpected. It's definitely not a Left Behind Series clone, and both story and writing are fresh and exhilarating.
Jonathan Ladd, USN Retired, is about to embark on the mother of all missions. His life as a black ops specialist has left him jaded and cynical. Everywhere he looks is corruption, hopelessness, and desapir. A few powerful men with deep pockets have developed technology that will wipe out most of mankind instead of creating the needed healing and renaissance. His long time friendship with Max Draco has been ripped to shreds by an unthinkable abomination. Only his love for Johanna Starling eases Jonathan, and even that blessing is tenuous. Then, through a mysterious discovery from ancient times, Jonathan discovers the answers to questions that have haunted mankind since time began.
He is unexpectedly propelled into a future world of time travel and telepathy, to Earth as God intended it to be. Seas are radiant with life. Earth itself is pristine, with oxygen rich air and pure, sweet water. To the battle weary Jonathan, all is primordial perfection. Earth's inhabitants are loving and compassionate. He sees wonders beyond human comprehension, learns awe inspiring secrets from the past. And finally the hardened warrior from Earth's sullied past becomes the savior of his world, destined to encounter evil personified.
Michael Silverhawk has spent a lifetime searching for the face of God. Our human history has wandered far afield of God's plan for His world. Life as we know it has become skewed and manipulated for nefarious reasons. The U.S. especially has veered off the path intended by her founders. Drifters shows us both sides of the coin - what was, is, and could be again with love and compassion as the key. The key that unlocks human potential is hidden within the Drifters trilogy. I recommend you hitch a ride on this adventure. Volume One is just the beginning.

Ms. Brady is to be watched, or better, read. These stories offer a contemporary bop on the lives of American women of Irish descent (and I do mean descent). The characters are beautifully drawn with great subtlety and wit; and the stories give us hope -- which we need in this dark world of ours. I read them all in two sittings.

These stories touched me. As an Irish American woman, I found touchstones for my own experience in the lives of Brady's characters, women who are sometimes submissive, sometimes rebellious, but always strong in spirit. I was so moved by the book I looked on MetaCrawler for more information about the author. I found her website at http://members.xoom/mahri/cbrady.html. There's an interview with the author that offers insight into the stories as well as a reader's guide. The women in the stories are struggling to meet the demands of work and the needs of their families, and this really struck me as an issue any woman today can relate to.

This is a dynamic writing that is sure to be an inspiration for anyone who has a desire to truly know God and hear from Him personally. The author details her personal encounters as she journeys through her spiritual walk with God. The eye-opening experiences in this book forced me to examine my own walk with God in greater detail, which left me with the desire for an even closer walk with God. This is truly an excellent writing that reminds us of the faithfulness, mercifulness, and forgiving nature of God. EXCELLENT WORK!!

As a practicing physician, I have found this book quite useful in dealing with both patients and their families. The book has wide application to many medical specialties, paricularly internal medicine, critical care and geriatrics. Excellent and well chosen cases illustrate the authors' points well. Most practicing physicians will be able to relate to many of the cases presented in the book. An excellent, instructive review of an area of medicine that many physicians are expected to know, but never recieve any training in.

If you're kid or teen who's a fan of the series, I highly recommend this book to you. Once you start it, it's hard to put down. I'm 15, and I've been reading this series since 5th grade. I also enjoy the adult series, so if you're sick of reading kid books, then try those.
Impressed yet again!

Yes! I have been anxiously awaiting the next installment of books 31 and 32 of the LBTK. I finally got them last night, and read Escape to Masada in the parking lot of a Home Depot, and couldn't put it down! This book was great! The plague of sores put on all who have taken the mark has come to its worse, and believers need a place for refudge! While Judd, Lionel, and Sam are helping in the flea to Masada and Petra, trouble is brewing in the West Coast. Manny, Mark, and Vicki go in search of an unbeliever, Claudia, that needs their help. However, a chase by the GC leads them to yet another detour. What's the story behind Manny? Can they really trust Claudia, even though she's GC? I urge any fan to go out and buy this book! I've just started 32, and only put it down to write this and tell you to go by them! I know the books have been a little slow lately, but they really seem to be speeding up! This series has it all, adventure, truth, drama, comedy, and dare I say a little romance??? Well, I won't give it all away! Go read it yourselves!

I read this book in 24 hours. This is a fascinating book about the possible nature and purpose of UFOs and aliens. A good mix of science and biblical accounts and explainations makes this an important addition to your library. It will hold your attention throughout. I highly recommend it.
finally a biblical answer to what these u.f.o.'s are.

Hitchcock provides a very informative look at the phenomenon of ET visits to Earth and gives a clear view of who ET really is. Extensive attention is paid to Biblical references and a logical approach is used to state that ET is a threat and is demonic in nature. Numerous references were used to make a scientific subject very clear to an asthetic Bible student like myself. Very easy to comprehend and a fascinating read. Worth reading and should be a must for everyone!

Along with the stories & information about the horrible practice of horse slaughter there are websites listed for every state where you can find horse shelters if you want to adopt a horse or need to find a permanent home for one you love.
I found a shelter in Michigan that I send a little gift to monthly. My first foster horse there was a blind palamino named Billy. His owner put him there before she passed away of a terminal illness. Billy passed away too so now I foster one of his companions. For a city person it's fun to help lovely creature.
There are two reasons to stop horse slaughter besides being kind. One, horse theft has risen because someone can make a profit selling a stolen horse to a slaughter auction. Children wake up to find their beloved pet horse has been stolen. It's too heartbreaking! Two, personally, I believe that horses are being more frequently injured on racetracks because there are not enough of them running. I think they are fatigued by running too often.
HR 503 passed in Congress. If you love horses please contact your senators about saving them from slaughter.
I am editing this review because the horse slaughters have been shut down. Now we need laws where horses cannot be transported in double decker trucks to go to slaughter in Canada and Mexico. Fifty nine Belgium Draft horses tipped over in Wadsworth IL in '07. It took all the local fire departments five hours to cut the truck open. Some of the horse had been so horribly maimed I cannot say how bad it was in a review. The horses that had to be put down as soon as the truck was opened suffered agony for the entire five hours not to mention riding in a truck where it was too short to hold up their lovely heads for G-d knows how many hours. Where is our humanity?
