BOOKS CONTRADICTS JESUS' PROPHECY OF "AT THE LAST DAY."
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-13
This book fails to address the words of Jesus Christ concerning "the last day" in John 6:39-40; John 12:48 and John 5:28-29 which are the basis for the historical view on this subject.

We are to interpret the unclear verses of the Bible by the clear ones. This author uses the unclear verses to fuel his speculations. He needs to listen to Jesus Christ.

Jesus says: "Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:40).

"At the last day" - not 7 or 1007 years before the last day as this author believes.

Jesus says: "There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words. That very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day." (John 12:48)

This author needs to accept the very words of Jesus Christ when He says "at the last day."

Jesus says: "The hour is coming when all who are in the graves will hear my voice and come out. Those who have done good will rise to live and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned." (John 5:28-29)

This author changes the words of Jesus and tries to insert 1000 or 1007 years between Jesus' call and ignores the word "all". (See also John 11:24)

See 2 Peter 3:10-13 for a description of the last day. The rest of the Bible agrees with Jesus Christ not Greg Laurie.

Tsunamis. Earthquakes. Hurricanes. Terrorism. Is the end of the world near? Are we headed toward Armageddon? How can we live expectantly in a world of uncertainty?

These are questions answered by Greg Laurie in his book, Are These the Last Days? As the Senior Pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California, and the evangelist who leads the Harvest Crusades attended by almost three million people since their inception, Greg Laurie is knowledgeable enough to write on this topic.

This is not a book attempting to scare people into believing in Jesus Christ, but one that points out with compassion and clarity why each of us should consider our need for a Savior. Are These the Last Days speaks to the Christian and non-Christian alike, showing each what to expect in the coming times, and what they need to do to be ready.

Pastor Laurie's writing brought to mind the Lord's admonition to the prophet, Habbakuk, to, "...write the vision and make it plain..." (Hab. 2:2) Greg Laurie's easy, almost-conversational style, contains a vision of what is to come, backed up with scripture and illustrated with stories that anyone can relate to.

Armchair Interviews says: This is a book that you will want to read and share with your friends, Christian and non-Christian.

Expecting a book about John Denver and his interests, I received a dismal collection of unimportant personal recollections, some of which hardly had anything to do with John. The book also contains a dreadful story about its coming into existence: apparently the author sort of received the 'poems' (which are just as bad as the rest of the book) by some kind of miraculous dictation. The author says the purpose of the book is to honour John and to support the causes he was interested in- I think he will hardly be honoured by such a bad piece of work. Readers- if you want to support John, support Windstar, Cousteau etc but do not even think or ordering this book!

John's autobiography will be re-issued--this short tribute does fullfill some insights that J.D. did not reveal in his book...he was unduly concerned to "exorcise demons". The PBS feature --his Alaskan ecological foray--& last recorded song.."Yellowstone' will bring new adherents to Denver's belief in conservation..& healing powers of nature- untamed. Support Windstar..keep the eagles flying...

I read this book about a year after John's death and it brought me to tears. The book was not what I expected but I enjoyed it just the same! It had a couple of poems that expressed my thoughts after his untimely death. The opening was dull but told of its backgound and comming to be,some of witch was interresting and nessary to explain the book. Its a nice book to add to a John Denver collection.

This is one of those books which contains a good deal of interesting information and reviews of earlier discussions; for instance, McLuhan and Mumford and even a dash of Heidegger's anti-technological views. But the basic premise of the book rests on spurrious grounds. Man is said to be techological in his essence. Language and clothes are all extensions of our human 'nature' and thus by definition, tools or technology. Thus, all forms of technology which extend man's own capabilities are also seen to be a continuation of that same 'platonic project' - wrong! This even fits neatly into that scenario of man as machine, and downloading ourselves into computers at some future date. The self is humbled and made irrelevant. And it seems that Rothenberg has a teleological viewpoint; and this is all inevitable; as he says, we're just getting closer to nature all the time.

This is an excellent sociology text for anyone interested in how people thought about sociology in the early 1980s. It is impressively unaffected by any sociological thinking of the past two decades. If you'd be amazed to find that social forces affect the way people think about themselves, this is the book for you!

Four essays do stand out, however: Goffman's (two) and Geertz's essays are classics, and one centemporary author (Diamond) actually takes into account relatively recent ideas from disability studies.

Other readers will undoubtedly flay me for attempting to review a book which I didn't finish. Perhaps if you are a Brit and knew about this clever but badly flawed man, you would be more generous, but if after only a quarter of the book read, you knew that to continue on would leave you with an even deeper sense of depression that you already had achieved, I can only excuse muself by saying that life (my life that is), is too short to finish works that make you feel utterly miserable. This was undeniably a clever, probably brilliant man but his deliberate self destruction only made mw feel wretched so I'll leave it to otheres to prove me wrong.

I read this book for a History of the Cold War class where the prof. attempted to equate this book with the core argument that the decisions made by the Cold War are direct or substantially related causes of the suburbanization and expansionism of today. This book did a poor job arguing that fact and a worse job placing any firm argument on whatever its unclear point was.
The thesis is lacking, as, after reading it three times, I'm not entirely sure if he had much of a point other than to complain about the United States in the past, in the present, or today and what substantive thesis that was to lead to, is also unclear.
The book begins with an explination of history, which was "enlightening" if for some reason formalistic schooling taught you Stalin wasn't an honest, hardworking individual. It defends Stalin's actions as simply protectionist, non-expansionist and dynamic. He claims that Stalin kept his promises and was co-operative in order to fight imperialism (ignoring entirely that Stalin was a dictator). My problems could have come from the fact I'm not a Marxist and therefore require that arguments start with fact and lead to a proposition, not assuming the proposition and ignoring the contrary information.
Once Jezer moves on from his distorted and factually supported view of history, he goes on to analyzing pop culture. Unsuccessfully, he simply states that people were bored and thus participate in sex, were oppressed therefore encouraged to rebel, and makes broad statements without factual basings including the argument that the Civil Rights Movement was a direct derivative of the cold war.
No real factual arguments were used to base these arguments, the sources tended to be equally biased and not only was the book biased, but it do not substantial act to justify this bias. It focused as an eco-centric basis for events, and while many trees died to rail on bussiness, he did little to address any other dynamic aspects of the time period.

As A Book, Terrible; A Hagiography of Mother Berchmans

Mother Berchmans was a trappestine nun who was instrumental in the success of the first Japanese monestary of her order. While I generally like Merton, this is nothing like Merton's typical style. It is in the literary format of a "life of a holy person" or hagiography. It emphasizes the holy and selfless behavior of the nun and the religious effect on the community. I read it as part of academic work on Merton.

It tells you a lot that even Merton did not particularly like this book (but Merton disliked much of his own work).

If you have a specific reason for buying this, it's a good example both of early Merton (just after his admission to the Abbey of Gethsemani) or of religious biography. If not, try one of Merton's other works. If you're new to Merton, I'd recommmend New Seeds of Contemplation (New Directions Paperbook).

Unfortunately, I did not read the fine print of this book. It is a christian based book with a huge bias. It does not address ETHICAL issues only religious arguments. I wish some of the authors would have been more educated on genetics and the field of genetic counseling, since it was evident that the authors were uneducated.
