It started with his poetry when I was in high school. Imediately, I was spellbound. Then I found this collection of short stories. I cannot stop reading. I love every aspect of his "craft or sullen art." When I read his works, I feel a kind of longing and comfort. The stories in this collection were taken from books that were already published, and after reading these stories, I want to read everything Dylan Thomas ever wrote. When I see his picture, I sense a bond between him and I. I see the little boy, I see the young man; I know them. Dylan Thomas' type of writing is something all writers want to achieve. His words are completely private and honest. He is an imortal legacy.

Poignant and emotional
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-09
"The End of August" is a very moving historical novel that details Midwestern farm life in the early part of the 20th century. Told from the perspective of the author's grandmother, the book follows the reminiscences and dreams of 96-year-old Anna as she contemplates various events in her life. These rich, descriptive accounts transport the reader back to the horse-and-buggy era, vividly depicting numerous aspects of farm and small-town living: births, deaths, joys, hardships, hard work, celebrations and day-to-day activities. Charles Lindbergh himself even makes an appearance in the book. The author possesses the rare ability to evoke emotional, half-forgotten memories in the reader; don't be surprised if you find yourself thinking of your own grandparents and relatives. "The End of August" is a well-written, nostalgic look back at the hardships, sacrifices and triumphs of previous generations. To be sure, it was a simpler, vastly different era, but were those really the "good old days?" This question is left for the reader to ponder and decide.

Civility Anatomized -- From Below

This is a fine study of the filthy anti-conduct text, GROBIANUS, which Correll calls "that strange verse compendium of bad manners first written thirty years after THE COURTIER by the minor German humanist Friedrich Dedekind." Beautifully written, elegantly thought, this book analyzes early modern identity formation, "refocusing on the margins" to show how this text seeks to "secure normative masculine identity and construct the gendered subject of civility by means of the labor of aversion." Correll sees GROBIANUS as an end point of conduct books and connects it with a dense early modern European context. One comes away with an enlivened appreciation of the minor text and with the pleasure of contact with an insightful and deeply informed intellect.

A Beautiful Guide for Choices to Enhance &Transform Your Life

Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D. writes deep wisdom in this book that can help you to become more aware and get in touch with your highest choices to eliminate any negative Karma in your life.

Each chapter has a beautiful verse, or poem, and it is them followed up with an enlightening explanation that is deep enough to help you on a deeper level, and down-to-earth enough to help people who might be new and/or searching on a spiritual path.

What I love about this book is that it helps you to get in touch with your Highest Self in a pure way. One of my favorite passages comes from chapter 12 "Going Deeper":

I quote here: "Returning back to the theme of listening, this chapter tells us that by genuinely doing so, ignorant people can become wise, mere mortals can become Divine, and all creatures can transform themselves to become pure, as virtues arise in their hearts. Thus, God's love as manifested by His Will (which we hear by listening deeply) transforms ordinary folks with countless failings into saints and Godlike individuals who continually remain in bliss.
It is also restated that listening eliminates errors from our life. And this is the beginning stage of a deep, lasting, and perfect peace."

This book is undoubtedly a beautiful and needed contribution to uplift humanity.

This is an excellent book and is a valuable addition to the libary of both RN's and APRN's working in hospice and palliative care. It provides both a general overview and specific guidelines for end stage disease process and symptom management. It would be a useful resource for anyone studying for the CHPN exam, in addition to a good working reference book to asssist in the managment of patients and their symptoms.

Bizarre, Wonderful, Visionary - A Very Fun Read
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-28
I was introduced to this work by Madison Smartt Bell when he read "15 February 2003" to a creative writing class a few years ago. I was very intrigued and bought the book shortly after. The short stories in this book are both visionary and hilarious. Gray has a beautiful ability to capture a deep sense of truth from minor details and quietly bizarre circumstances. He gets into some very deep psychological territory with stories such as "Aiblins," where the author himself meets a fictionalized version of himself as a young man, and "Job's Skin Game" where a man who is coping with eczema engages in quaint and grotesque skin peeling rituals. His stories are immediately engaging, very fun and easy to read though often presented in esoteric forms.

I read Poor Things a year or so after this book and liked it FAR less. That book, although a good yarn, seemed trite next to this book. It seemed a bit gimmicky; the tricks that Gray uses throughout that book were fun but didn't leave a lasting impression.
In "Ends of our Tethers" Alasdair Gray achieves a beautiful harmony between postmodern mashup of style and deep, true characters. "Sinkings" and "No Bluebeard" are stories that are presented almost as lists. The first being three brief scenarios where the narrator was emotionally damaged and insulted by the people around him, the second is a male narrator recounting the tale of his various ruined marriages, the wives referred to simply as FIRST, SECOND, and THIRD.

My favorite of these stories are those that add a touch of the surreal. "Big Pockets with Buttoned Flaps" and "15 February 2003" seem to take place in a future dystopia. The narrators of these stories are filled with an existential kind of despair.
I can't recommend this book enough. Sometimes visionary sometimes just interesting and enjoyable. Gray's illustrations also add to the experience of this book. The leering skulls seem both friendly and evil.

I loved it! Finally I got to see and hear everything that happened in the McCarthy censure hearings. This book is a gem for a researcher -- and there is no way to impune the author.
