This book incapsulates a genius and his gift of insight and ability to create such mind blowing beauty. The book tell of his childhood and goes through a multitude of experience that shaped his life and nurtured his personal creativity. It also shows a number of his clients and people he has worked with and they offer comments and goodbyes to Aucoin, who has died recently. It is well rounded and very hard to put down. I have all of the books related to him and recommend them all to anyone who is in advertising, fashion, beauty, and commercial art industry. His story is one of struggles and accomplishments. It is tragic that we lost this brilliant, intelligent, inspiring individual, it is evident that he was just getting started.

For those who really love Kevyn, this is a must read. I am a huge fan, and have all of his other books. It was so sad to see such talent pass so soon, but this book really celebrates his life and talent. Great pictures and commentary from celebrities and those closest to Kevyn.

Anyone seriously interested in the art of makeup must be familiar with the name Kevyn Aucoin. In the era of the supermodel, he was the super makeup artist. Aucoin was not only an exceptional artist, but an exceptional person. I could rave on and on about my late teens and early twenties, when I went through a period of self hatred because of the way I percieved myself. Kevyn's books encouraged readers to be adventurous in their exploration of self-image, teaching good techniques and smart tricks. It may sound trite, but I honestly believe those books did a lot for my self-esteem as well as my makeup skills. Even if you don't own his other books, this one is worth having for sure.

I thought this book would be more of a "how to" book more than a biography, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and am more inspired than ever to take my makeup artistry to the next level. It is easy to read and very interesting. No matter who you are or what your goals are, this book is proof that EVERYONE has obstacles to overcome. There is a small portion of the book dedicated to "how-to" in the back and I read the book cover to cover. I think I will still get some other beauty how-to books, but I was not disappointed in this at all even though it did not turn out to be what I originally thought.

I did not want this book to end. Kevyn Aucoin was an amazingly talented artist, but more importantly he was an amazing person. This book tells his story from his beginning in Louisiana, to the glamour of the super model era, to Kevyn becoming the most famous artist in his field. It is touching, detailed, and even helpful with the included makeup tips. a beautiful tribute to a beautiful person.

I bought this book for my mother for Christmas. She is a working woman after all... She finally had a bit of time to read the book in the morning before she gets ready for work, and she loves it. She said that it's very inspiring and motivates her. It fits the working woman status. The book is great. I have other Chicken Soup books and so far, I've loved them all.

Every woman alive is a working woman, no matter whether she has a husband and/or children, or not. There are daily struggles with family, weekly struggles with work and ultimately, very emotional struggles with just living! Chicken Soup for the Working Woman's Soul is a moment of relaxation. It's a chance for a woman to sit down with a soothing drink, put her feet up and dive into the issues that we all face - as seen through the eyes of our peers. As a mom, it's a chance for me to see that my kids aren't as wild as I sometimes feel they are ... as a woman, it was the opportunity to see that work and balancing issues happen to everyone ... and as a wife, it gave me a firm appreciation for the amount of work that my husband and I accomplish as we take care of our family. The one point of this book that isn't mentioned enough is that our souls need to be in shape before we can contend with the world around us. Chicken Soup for the Working Woman's Soul gives a woman a chance to parlay her soul into the being that she wants it to be, while allowing us to view inside a slice of another's soul. It's thought provoking, entertaining and reassuring to see that other women are in the same places in their lives that we have been with various issues. It's a chit-chat, without the other person sitting in front of you. I believe this is one of those books that you read, set on your bookshelf, and read again when the world around you is pulling you in every direction. It's a safe haven in turmoil, and it's a chance for a woman to recharge after a rough one! It's, well, it's chicken soup for the working woman's soul!

Amelia Bedelia is "helping out" again, in that special way that only Amelia can! Just imagine our favorite literal-minded thinker in the wonderful world of medicine -- and there you have it! They say laughter is the best medicine, and Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia is guaranteed to cure whatever ails 'ya!

Teens in the house were howling with laughter as they read it out loud to the younger kids. The whole family will enjoy this book.

Calling Doctor Amelia Bedelia by Herman Parish, like all of his Amelia Bedelia books, is hysterically funny. Parish's use of expressions confuse Mr. Rogers' maid, Amelia Bedelia, throughout the entire story. Poor, silly, Amelia Bedelia never realizes how confused she really is. She takes everything anyone says literally, so when her boss Mr. Rogers says "jump in the car", she thinks that he actually means to sit in the car and jump.
In this story, Amelia Bedelia goes to the doctor. However, when she gets there the nurse asks for Amelia Bedelia's help with the patients. A woman who calls the doctor's office to complain that she has "caught a bug" is told to "let it go" by Amelia Bedelia. She proceeds to tell a woman who has hives to bring some honey to the doctor's office. She looks at a bank's clock to take a patient's temperature and she tells a boy to draw his own blood onto a piece of blank paper. A boy says that he is at the office for a test and Amelia Bedelia tells him that he must go to school.
No matter what Amelia Bedelia did for most of the book, she is a hit when she "treats" the patients to ice cream! This is not exactly what the nurse had in mind when she said to treat the patients, however, Amelia Bedelia comes out looking like a hero!
Amelia Bedelia is entertaining to the adults who read this story to children because we have an even better sense of Amelia Bedelia's silliness. I love reading this story to my second graders and they love hearing it!

This is the best book about commitment in the workplace so far as I am concerned. Readers may find the style of writing, contents and structure so clear and straightforward.

If you STILL recognise employees' commitment to their organisation is composed of only one dimension based upon "affection" or "identification", probably you're wrong. And if you find your coworkers and supervisors may seem committed to the organisation, their behaviours lead to various results, not simply determined as a good citizen's.

This book will give you a key to solve what we think about "complexed" commitment. Essential for MBA students, researchers and HR managers. Good work, in a word.

A Complete book about organizational commitment.

Review Date: 2006-08-12
The new fourth edition of "Health Care Job Explosion!: High Growth Health Care Careers and Job Locator" is a brand new comprehensive career guide and a job locator for health care jobs. Health career data can be accessed at multiple internet sites, with one created especially for this book (http://healthcarejobs.org). The book is very user-friendly and is conveniently organized into 10 chapters. The first, "the Health Care Explosion," is an overview, while the second, "the Nexus - Making a Connection," is helpful to increase chances of obtaining the desired job. Chapter three, "Job Sources for Everyone," is an invaluable key to many resources, including job advertising services, job fairs, job hotlines, internet sites, associations and directories. It even includes pages on the Internet, Surfing lessons, LIST SERVERS, search engines, and education and career resources. A handy system of symbols connects the reader to the desired resource. Chapters four through ten cover general health care job areas, from health technologists and technicians to dietetics, pharmacy, therapy, nursing, health and social services, health diagnosing occupations and assistants, and home health care jobs. Each of these chapters begins with an interview with a practicing health care worker in the listed field. Job descriptions include significant points, a description of the nature of the work, working conditions, training, qualifications and advancement, job outlook, earnings, and related occupations. This is followed by an exhaustive listing of additional special resources pertaining to that occupation/area, again using the helpful icons established in chapter 3. Finally, Appendices A and B present information about health care corporations and sources for tuition and scholarships for specialized health care job training. "Health Care Job Explosion!" is an updated resource that will serve all who seek to build a career in one of the many areas related to health care in the United States. It would be a valued addition to the shelves of libraries and education institutions.

I knew I needed a change in life and a new career. But I new it needed to be something that paid decent and would give me job security. So I bought this book, read about the different fields and then handed it over to my teenage daughter to get her thinking about her future....This book guided me in the right direction and now I am in school and will graduate in early 2008. I will have job security and a decent salary until I retire. If you are interested in the medical field then this book is a great guide in helping you decide what you would like to do and how much education you need, where to go to school and what exams you must pass. Great book for those looking for a career change or just thinking of trying something else in life.

William R. Vitanyi, Jr., author of the office satire Kyuboria, brings us his latest office lampoon, The Official Guide to Office Wellness. This quirky and funny manual demonstrates 101 common office maladies and pairs them with animal-inspired techniques and exercises to relieve the condition. Each one is charmingly demonstrated by real office workers in the accompanying photos.

There's a little something for every office dweller inside this book's pages, and more often than not, workers will chuckle at the conditions, smirk at the remedies, and laugh even harder at the full decriptions. From Bluescreenism to Coworker Adhesion Syndrome, Vitanyi proves that he's no office slouch. This is an environment he's in synch with, and his spot-on, wry observations are seldom discussed in general public in such a humorous manner, let alone compiled and chronicled so thoroughly as in this book. But that's part of the brilliance of the work. Because while it's "fresh" material, it's also instantly recognizable to other office drones. Even if the reader doesn't suffer from some of the maladies, such as Compliance Disorder -- which every longtime office dweller should suffer at some juncture -- or Ambitionism, they'll surely recognize one of their office mates who does suffer from the afflictions.

How he convinced so many people to pose in such a silly manner, I'll never know, though I suspect it has something to do with Task Exuberance. No matter how he pulled it off, this manual is the perfect escape to look forward to as a lunchtime break for those suffering from Noonism. And it'll make an even better coffee table book for office folks with a good sense of humor.

Great laugh for the office.

Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (1/07)

The author, Deborah Ribis, has had extensive experience in a variety of areas working with people who have become disabled. She describes herself as "a nurse of 22 years who has worked in the system, survived through the system, and assisted others in the system." She has experienced two serious disabling conditions. She writes this book in a comprehensive outline form to help you go through the process step-by-step. By learning how to advocate for yourself, you can greatly increase your opportunity for success in dealing with the system. This is not a "How to Scam the System" kind of book. She legitimately addresses issues that persons who become disabled have to deal with. People who are either injured on or off the job will benefit from the information provided here.

Included in the wealth of information presented is: definitions of terms; descriptions of the roles of people involved; interesting cases; and each chapter is concluded with "Things to Remember" summaries and "Questions You Need to Ask." In the back of the book are worksheets and a communications log to help organize information. Ribis also includes a list of references and resources.

The author's own personal experiences in dealing with the system took her from being a passive patient to becoming an advocate for oneself. I experienced the same situation myself with an on-the-job injury when I was in my early twenties. I was injured while working at a hospital. Having been a loyal employee for four years, I expected different treatment then what I got. Reading "Get Back on Your Feet" taught me that many of my negative experiences in dealing with my injury are very common.

"The System" knows how to deal with injured employees. They know how to emotionally make a person try to back down from claims of injury. They know how to try to work around doctors orders for "Light Duty," etc. The employee that has been injured doesn't have the resources to know how to work through the mire that will be thrown at them. Or at least they didn't until this book was published. I wish I had this information back then. I would have been able to better advocate for myself. I ended up hiring an attorney to advocate for me, which was expensive.

I highly recommend this book to people who are recovering from injuries that will affect their employment. They need to get their hands on this resource as quickly as possible. I also recommend this book to people working with those that have become disabled because the information in here is invaluable. I am going to use "Get Back on Your Feet" as a resource for helping teach my disabled students how to self-advocate. I look forward to using the knowledge that I have gained from this great book.

Based explicitly on the Food and Drug Administration's Food Code, HACCP & Sanitation covers everything from food measuring devices to strict measures to prevent food-borne bacteria and illness, to flow charts that pinpoint the most hazardous points of food preparation, facility plans, pest management and more. Useful as a resource for restaurateurs, food science students, HACCP & Sanitation lays down basic "need-to-know" information in no-nonsense terms and comes very highly recommended.

HACCP is the acronym for Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points. This text, by Arduser and Brown is the be all and end all on the topic - in my view. It even comes with a companion CD-ROM that contains all forms from the book in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) and MS Word format. This is a major time saver when it comes to preparing and administering the required tests to staff members and the newly hired.

The comprehensive 530+ page text covers everything I can think of that relates to food safety in restaurants and other eateries. It is designed to teach food service managers and their employees the specifics of food safety in accordance with the FDA Food Code. This excellent training manual is in large print format that makes it easy to read. The writing is easy to understand and the authors were careful to explain key concepts and terms so that even a novice can study it alone.

The seven comprehensive chapters in the manual cover the following topics: Hazards to Food Safety; Factors Affecting Food-Born Illness; Food Safety Regulations; Following The Flow of Food; HACCP; and the Facility Plan. These are followed by an extremely helpful Glossary of terms. The Appendix includes all forms needed to meet the FDA requirements and to run an efficient and safe establishment. Included are checklists, signage, compliance checklists, and equipment cleaning charts, allergen-control program worksheet along with job descriptions for personnel. There is even a Certificate of Completion to certify that staff members have taken and passed the required tests (included).

With the rise in reports of food-borne illnesses and deaths it is essential that every food service operation adhere to the regulations and safety procedures at all times. In my view, this book is essential to ensure you are in total compliance.

As one who has conducted training I find this book deserves 5 stars for its complete coverage of the subject matter in an easy to digest all-in-one format. I highly recommend this book.

Corporations often don't like to expose how workers are treated. That can make it extremely difficult, if you are seeking a job at a particular company, or looking for a job in a new career.

Labier, unexpectedly, uncovered damning evidence of what the modern work world can be like.

As a psychiatrist treating people in white-collar professionals who were bothered by their jobs, he used standard psychological tests as a quantitative tool. He hit upon the idea of going to the companies where these people to find out, using the same psychological tests, what the people who liked their jobs were like.

The results floored him. There was a significant difference but not in the direction he had expected: on a dominance-submissive scale, people who liked their white-collar corporate jobs tended to either be significantly more dominant or significantly more submissive.

Labier apparently made an effort to call this state of affairs to the governments attention. If you are an individual bothered by your white-collar job, it's possible you are facing the kinds of dominant or submissive co-workers Labier uncovered. When you throw in the downsizing, belittlement and growing gap between worker and executive compensation seen in the 1990's and 2000's, it isn't that hard to believe what Labier found, is it? So which comes first, do the corporate practices attracts the dominants and submissives or is it the other way around? Best to be as much out of the way as possible, perhaps.

At the least, it can be helpful to understand how psychologically unhealthly a corporate atmosphere can be - as confirmed using standard psychological tests by a psychiatrist testing inside corporations.

Implications of Adapting to Maladaptive Work Environments
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-21
This book was a recommended text in my Organizational Behavior class. I'll need a new copy because I have underlined and highlighted so much of the text! Dr. LaBier has deftly identified theoretical and practical "gaps" in the fields of clinical psychology, organizational psychology, organizational development and management consulting. The Big Question ... What type of organizational context/environment are individuals being encouraged to adapt to? The personal costs of so-called healthy adjustment to one's work environment often include suffering from symptoms of value conflicts, negative coping and overadapting? These symptoms are exacerbated if you are a healthy well-adjusted individual. They are significantly diminished if you are an individual whose daily interactions are already rife with maladaptive behaviors! Have you discovered that many managers and leaders seem to make others sick? Then you've been exposed to the individual that Dr. LaBier describes in great detail. The workplace winner could be a very disturbed individual whose mental aberrations are valued as strengths in our workplaces. Unchecked, these individuals spread malaise, low morale, mistrust and other damaging workplace dynamics.

One of the key paradoxes illuminated in this book... what are the implications for individuals and society when the maladaptive individual can adjust and flourish in a corporate (disturbed) environment and the healthy, adjusted person is depleted mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually by the same (disturbed) environment? What are the responsibilities of organizational experts whose primary task is to develop or "fix" individuals or teams so they may successfully "adjust" to their disturbed work environments? There are positive and negative repercussions to the pursuit of career success, Dr. LaBier encourages his readers to question the assumption that adaptiveness equates to healthy functioning.
