I trained in the Self-Management program and have led groups for years, and have seen people make wonderful changes. This experience and knowledge inspired me to write my book, The Art of Getting Well.
Drs Lorig, Holman, Sobel and the other authors lay out all you need to know to develop your programs of exercise, relaxation, emotional support, and healthy eating. They also teach how to deal successfully with medical systems and treatments.
The book stresses living the best possible life, not just following medical orders or watching everything you eat. It's an excellent complement to my book, which will provide some inspiration to attempt the behavior changes that "Living a Healthy Life" explains so well.09235215345992003-12-11Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions...This book does an excellent job of presenting how chronic illness patients are overwhelmed and how they can aggressively
confront the debilitating cycle and successfully manage the lifestyles they must lead. Everyone with a chronic illness is forced to live differently than all others, no matter their age.
The book analyzes and describes the depleting cycle that anyone with a chronic, dibilitating illness encounters, and offers proven solutions on how to break the debilitating cycle and progress outward inspite of the illness.0923521534313132000-06-30Good resource for seniorsThis book, written in a very simple, "self-help" style, seems to be geared to the senior citizen suffering from chronic illness and emphasizes developing and implementing management plans for exercise, diet, and medical care. While much of it is common sense, it does offer bulleted, structured outlines for communicating with medical professionals, managing medicines, planning for the future (and possibly greater physical degeneration), and most of all acknowledges the feelings and depression that often accompany chronic illness.Drawing on input from people with long-term ailments, this book points the way to achieving the best possible life under the circumstances.0761922903Patient Education: A Practical Approach0761900675Outcome Measures for Health Education and Other Health Care Interventions0738210706The Arthritis Helpbook (mass mkt ed)1572245492The Relaxation & Stress Reduction Workbook (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook)0803613989Rehab Notes (Davis Notes)B0007Y6BS4Tanita BC533 Glass Innerscan Body Composition MonitorB0002MQ9G0Braun IRT 4020 ThermoScan Ear Thermometer4634Diabetes4632Special Conditions4613Diets & Weight Loss10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books297481General4656Disorders & Diseases10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books298657General10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books465686Healthy Living282800Personal Health10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books11367Family Health20Parenting & Families1000Subjects283155Books172722General20Parenting & Families1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books19G1DPS0MWRPLPowerful Self-Care Guides0879932260http://www.amazon.com/Cor-Pulmonale-Chronic-Bronchitis-Emphysema/dp/0879932260%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D08799322605593030M. These are the people suffering from insomnia.

Think of the book as a sandwich. Two wafer-thin slices of sociology in the introduction and conclusion, holding between them a big fat slice of baloney.

The separation of evocative prose and sociology is the book's main flaw. In addition, the long narrative of illness is absolutely dull and tedious to read. It reads like.... fieldnotes. Like the fieldnotes of a goody two-shoes master's student who has discovered Autoethnography and is struggling to write one. Ellis is the author of good methodological treatises, but she can preach better than she can practice. "The Ethnographic I" is an excellent textbook, but "Final Negotations" is as scintillating as mucus.

I think more sex would have made the book halfway passable.15663927055112005-08-14Final NegotiationsEllis' autoethnographic novel graphically depicted details about the relationship she had with Gene who was her professor, partner and who later became her husband. As a scholar Ellis' Final Negotiations offered poignant thoughts, which are often ignored in academia. Ellis' experiences regarding her open relationship with Gene, his deteriorating health and her own professional growth, as a woman and scholar in her field were raw, authentic and made you appreciate healthy relationships, supportive colleagues and the ability to express yourself despite what critics have to say. Ellis' willingness to allow her readers to study how she analyzed her own subjectivity made me consider some of my inner thoughts. I recommend this book to anyone interested in finding hope and balance in all life bring us.15663927055332001-05-14Excellent with real honesty and depth! This book is so insightful and a wonderful description of what it is like to be primary caretaker for one you love. The text is wonderfully written and moves you deeply into the lives of the characters. Ellis does not shy away from honesty, and in doing so helps us all better face the realities of caring for the terminally ill. On the other hand, Ellis still manages to leave us with hope. When Carolyn Ellis, a graduate student, and Gene Weinstein, her Professor, fell in love, he was experiencing the first stages of emphysema. As he became increasingly disabled and immobile, these two intensely connected partners fought to maintain their love and to live a meaningful life. They learned to negotiate ther daily lives in a way that enabled each of them to feel sufficiently autonomous—him not always like a patient and her not always like a caretaker. Writing as a sociologist, Ellis protrays their life together as a way to understand the complexities of romance, of living with a progressive illness, and, in the final negotiation and reversal of positions, of coping with the loss of a loved one.
This rare memoir full of often raw details and emotions becomes an intimate conversation about the intricacies of feeling and relating in a relationship. What Ellis calls experimental ethnography is a finely crafted, forthright, and daring story framed by the author's reflections on writing about and analyzing one's own life. Casting off the safe distance of most social science inquiry, she surrenders the private shroud of a complex relationship to bring sociology closer to literature.0759100519The Ethnographic I: A Methodological Novel about Autoethnography (Ethnographic Alternatives Book Series)0761991646Composing Ethnography: Alternative Forms of Qualitative Writing: Alternative Forms of Qualitative Writing (Ethnographic Alternatives Book Series, V. 1)0465032044The Illness Narratives: Suffering, Healing, And The Human Condition0761927573The SAGE Handbook of Qualitative Research0520056760Symbolic Interactionism: Perspective and Method2375General2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2423Medical2419Professionals & Academics2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books10580Social Services & Welfare10576Poverty10546Current Events53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books11268General11232Social Sciences53Nonfiction1000Subjects283155Books10847Disability173491Specialties10777Law1000Subjects283155Books11367Family Health20Parenting & Families1000Subjects283155Books225828Internal Medicine14323Cardiology14325Critical Care14327Endocrinology & Metabolism14329Gastroenterology14331General14334Hematology16244581Hepatology14336Infectious Disease14346Nephrology14348Neurology14361Oncology14369Pulmonary14371Rheumatology14431Urology13996Medicine1000Subjects283155Books282816Lung Disease4656Disorders & Diseases10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0609604244http://www.amazon.com/Breathing-Free-Revolutionary-Bronchitis-Respiratory/dp/0609604244%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0609604244913055http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71AZ3G6FNFL._SL75_.gif7555http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71AZ3G6FNFL._SL160_.gif160118http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71AZ3G6FNFL.gif475349Teresa HaleHardcover616.2004697806096042431040609604244EnglishEnglishEnglish8552300USD$23.00Harmony1304Book1999-07-06Harmony1999-07-06HarmonyBreathing Free: The Revolutionary 5-Day Program to Heal Asthma, Emphysema, Bronchitis, and Other Respiratory Ailments04586360424899578974USD$9.7479USD$0.792300USD$23.0032210003.030606096042443222007-03-23GOOD INFO, BUT A BIT VAGUEWell, how do I begin? First, I must say that I approached this book a bit cautiously optimistic based on the mixed reviews I read here. I had really wanted to get Close Your Mouth, by Patrick McKeown but I didn't want to wait. Luckily I found a local bookstore that had Breathing Free so I bought it right away. I must point out, I do not have asthma, but I know I'm a chronic hyperventilator that's been extrememly problematic this past year.

After I read it, I found the poor reviews were really based on somewhat poor comprehension of the material, although my biggest gripe is that the book IS a bit vague as some of the reviewers pointed out (Good thing I went ahead and ordered Close Your Mouth).

Does this method (Buteyko)work? I'm not sure yet, as it's only been 3 or 4 days. But I feel more controlled over my overbreathing, and I'm more conscious of it. I've already seen an improvement over how many breaths a minute I take, but not really in my controlled pause. I'm not sure if it's going to prove to be a panacea for me, but the stress levels I've been experiencing are becoming more manageable.

Conclusion: At this point, this book has been helpful, but based on other reviews I think there may be better books on the topic. Read this as an introduction, but be prepared to invest in other books.06096042445222007-01-16Brilliant! - all asthma sufferers must try this out.The idea presented in this book is so simple and radical, I read with severe skepticism. But I made an agreement with myself to give the 5-day program a try anyway. Well, it works! You truly get results in 5 days - but you have to commit to it. It's worth it. It hasn't cured my condition, but it has had a significant impact. I'm confident that if I continue to practice the breathing technique, and follow the other recommendations in the book about dietary adjustments, drinking habits, etc, the effects will continue.06096042441492006-10-24dangerous booki bought this book for a man with emphysema . the only good advice is to breathe through the nose. a technique taught in other medical info for pulmonary patients after they have calmed down from losing thier breath. Pulmonary rehab teaches deep breathing and other lung excersises , in every study and there are numerous, patients have improved breathing dramaticlly . so deep breathing is not a bad thing as this book would have one think , and anyone who has any education knows that plants and trees do not use oxygen they create it . the book is very redundant in speaking of the hale clinic . it critisizes medicines that are effective though have harsh side effects in helping with breath for those whom are severely ill but leaves nothing to replace them , other then breathe through the nose. however if the medicines are removed the person in all likely hood would not be able to breathe at all . it truly is not a helpful book , and when trying to go to the website , one came up with nothing but ads that the hale clinic probably gets paid to have on the so called site . or what i call a non existant site.with no contact info , it is wrong to give people a false sense of hope while giving them misinformation that benefits the seller of the information .it gives a false quick solution that does not work to those who are seeking desperately to find something , anything . and is dangerous to that person if they quit medicines tht help them breathe based on the misinformation in this book . 0609604244114152006-03-02In total agreement with asthmatics reviewThe Buteyko method is a superb therapy for asthma. Teresa Hales book touches on it but does not contain it. There are many books available which are worthy of reading especially if you have asthma, fatigue and other complaints. For example- do a search for Asthma Free naturally, Every Breath you take, The Buteyko Manual or a very simple read with all exercises called Close Your Mouth.

Good luck and healthy breathing0609604244210102006-02-22Fair Introduction, but reads like a sales pamphletThis book is a skimpy introduction to the Buteyko method, which seems to work. While the Buteyko method is very good, this book is deliberately vague about the details of the actual exercises. Hale spends chapter after chapter describing all the illnesses that the Breath Connection method will cure, but leaves many key questions about the method unanswered. Why do you take your pulse? How exactly do you breath shallowly? Do you use your diaphragm? Do you count? If not, how are you sure that you are doing it right?

Hale is plainly drumming up business for her clinic, so if there are more complete books on Buteyko elsewhere, I would strongly recommend going there.Teresa Hale will show you a new way to breathe. If you suffer from asthma or other severe respiratory diseases, this book could save your life.

An astonishing number of Americans suffer from respiratory diseases and have been told that there is little they can do about them except mask the symptoms with drugs. However, these drugs often cause a very unhealthy dependency in their users and fail to really treat the condition.

Breathing Free reveals a five-day program that has revolutionized the treatment of asthma and respiratory illness internationally. Called the Breath Connection and taught at London's renowned Hale Clinic, it is based on the discovery of Professor Konstantin Buteyko and on more than forty-five years of practical and empirical research. Thus far, the Breath Connection has helped hundreds of thousands of sufferers alleviate the worst symptoms of asthma and other respiratory illnesses. At the heart of this program is the concept that some 200 diseases -- including asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis--are a result of dysfunctional breathing, or overbreathing. With black-and-white descriptive line drawings throughout the text, Breathing Free teaches a simple, natural technique that demonstrates to sufferers how they can retain their breathing patterns so as to prevent and overcome attacks, restore healthy sleep, and reduce medication by up to 60 percent. The cornerstone of the program is The Pause Control, a technique of holding the breath that restores the body's natural levels of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and pH. For those seeking improvement in their overall health, it also offers major benefits regarding stress, weight loss, and the heart.

This genuinely groundbreaking book is set to revolutionize treatment for the millions of people who suffer from asthma and other respiratory illnesses and thought there was little or no hope in sight.Asthma kills 6,000 people a year. Respiratory illnesses affect millions more. According to Teresa Hale, asthmatics and others with respiratory illnesses are breathing wrong. "We have been led to believe that deep breathing is good for us because it increases our oxygen intake. In fact, the reverse is true. The more we breathe, the less oxygen actually reaches the cells of our bodies," says Hale in Breathing Free: The Revolutionary 5-Day Program to Heal Asthma, Emphysema, Bronchitis, and Other Respiratory Ailments. Her breathing program, Breath Connection, teaches you to change your breathing patterns so that you won't need to wheeze, breathe heavily, or take gulps of air after exertion. Hale promises that five days on this program will reduce your need for medications, and regular practice often increases metabolism and leads to weight loss.
Breathing Free gives a self-test to assess your breathing and teaches several techniques to improve it. Hale explains how to adapt the program for mild, moderate, or severe asthma; emphysema; bronchitis; panic attacks; general health; and children with asthma. She also suggests dietary guidelines.
Hale's program is based on the work of Konstantin Buteyko of the former Soviet Union. It is easy to understand, but will take time and effort to master. But Hale says you have a choice: "Stay where you are, with your daydreams and your deteriorating health, or take control and make some effort to effect permanent change." Hale founded Britain's renowned Hale Clinic, whose clients have included Princess Diana, the Duchess of York, Tina Turner, Richard Gere, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. --Joan Price1594771634Natural Therapies for Emphysema and COPD: Relief and Healing for Chronic Pulmonary Disorders0767912896Life and Breath: The Breakthrough Guide to the Latest Strategies for Fighting Asthma and Other Respiratory Problems -- At Any AgeB000LP674CReversing Asthma: Breathe Easier with This Revolutionary New Program0954599616Close Your Mouth: Buteyko Clinic Handbook for Perfect Health047123995XThe Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema HandbookB0009MFUZEHealth o Meter HDC100-01 "Grow with Me" Teddy Bear Scale for Babies and Toddlers11367Family Health20Parenting & Families1000Subjects283155Books172722General20Parenting & Families1000Subjects283155Books298657General10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books465684Respiratory4656Disorders & Diseases10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books1930138067http://www.amazon.com/Asthma-Emphysema-Chronic-Bronchitis-Pathophysiology/dp/1930138067%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D19301380675435993Blanchard-LoebCD-ROM61097819301380631301930138067EnglishEnglishEnglish75021000USD$210.00Delmar Learning1Book2000-01-01Delmar LearningDelmar LearningAsthma, Emphysema, and Chronic Bronchitis: Pathophysiology for Nurses (Pathophysiology for Nurses Video Series)5040916999USD$169.9912988USD$129.88310011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewtD%2BEayc9fAxxng%2BNW9lg879EFtvTsJsHIFB31OECPxYjkC%2B2YAUBfN25U92d3d5EEdwo%2BJE4Sk7Or%2FsTYLRJww%3D%3D21000USD$210.00Usually ships in 10 to 13 days1.01119301380671012007-08-10Not a real CD-RomThis "CD-Rom" is not a real program. Since navigating the Internet to find additional non-governmental medical information can be confusing, we've also provided our exclusive "Guide to Leading Medical Websites" with updated links to 73 of the best sites for medical information! By using weblinks on the CD-ROM, you can quickly check for the latest clinical updates directly from the government.
This CD-ROM has over 31,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software is included. Advanced search and indexing features are built into our reproduction, providing a complete full-text index. This enables the user to search all the files on the disk at one time for words or phrases using just one search command! The Acrobat cataloging technology adds enormous value and uncommon functionality to this impressive collection of government documents and material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!
Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc makes a superb reference work and educational tool for patients and their families, physicians, and other medical professionals. (Information on this CD-ROM is NOT a substitute for professional medical advice; of course, readers are urged to consult with a professional health care provider for any suspected illness.)047123995XThe Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema Handbook282816Lung Disease4656Disorders & Diseases10Health, Mind & Body1000Subjects283155Books0897667239http://www.amazon.com/624-Supplement-Pulmonary-Therapeutic-Intervention/dp/0897667239%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0897667239HardcoverAllen B.
