Little known, but this is an awesome book. The boy's story is heartbreaking though undoubtedly enticing. And suspense is undeniable. I read the book KNOWING what the ending was going to be, but I was wrong. I love books like that. :)

This book helped me with my financial needs!

I am a mother of two children married to a successful business person. This book helped me prepare my case and find assets in the business. Our case is still pending but I have already received more information from this book than I have from my lawyer during the entire case. I recommend it to anyone considering a divorce. I especially appreciate the list of professionals contained in the back of the book and the social security information. This should be required reading for anyone who is going through a divorce.

Imperative Reading for Clinicians Involved in Custody Work
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2000-06-11
This is a comprehensive and much-needed compilation of material for the custody evaluator. The authors provide an unbiased review of the research literature, clarifying the validity of assumptions regarding parent effectiveness, visitation schedules, and children's adustment to divorce. They point out the importance of considering context and individual dyads rather than relying on broad-based conclusions generated from any particular study. They have covered a breadth of topics, beginning with legal and ethical issues, relevant child development and adjustment issues, and psychological testing. Among other topics included are "the remarriage family," adopted children, medically ill children, and children of gay and lesbian parents. This work can be a useful reference for clinicians working with children of divorce, but for those performing custody evaluations it should be required reading.

Amazing find for my 9 year old

My [...] daughter, who's usually too busy talking to sit down and read for any length of time, loves this book. She's been carrying it around with her, reading parts out loud ( ok she can't be quite for too long)and is generally smug about the fact that she's reading something that no one else in the family has. I suppose I shouldn't be surprise since she's always loved A Chair for my Mother and Cherries and Cherry Pits and going even further back -- More, More, More said the Baby. I only wish Vera B. Williams would write more for older children.

Should be obligatory reading for all christians.

Excellent reference, excellent reasoning and excellent biblical exegesis! It's far past time this subject was dealt with using some kind of intelligence. Mr. Braun does so with humility and clearness of expression.

Bravo Michael Braun!

Not your run of the mill book on divorce
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-11-13
Separate Houses stands out as a helpful book not only for it's easy to read advice on divorce and stepfamily situations, but for the 2 "tests" that are included. You won't find these elsewhere (at least that I know of). There is the "Divorce Destructiveness Scale" which will help parents assess how they're handling the divorce in relationship to their children and the "Custody Determination Test" that can be used as a loose guide (along with other factors) in making a parenting plan that works. Just 90 pgs. long, the book packs a lot in.

Good Book for later elementary school kids
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-26
This book shows a child Silas making sense out of hearing his parents are going to divorce. He takes it out sideways on his best friend and dog, getting angry rather than addressing the subject directly. His parents help him address the topic and his feelings. He recalls hearing his mother and father fight and begins to understand this separation means less fighting.
The book uses an image of a spider plant having difficulty thriving in its stuffed pot, but does better when repotted separating it into two plants. Silas sees he is included in both Mother and Dad's worlds with his own space and own things to do with each of them. He sees divorce doesn't mean losing either parent, just having a family in a different way where all can thrive.
